Featureless quantum insulator on the honeycomb lattice

We show how to construct fully symmetric, gapped states without topological order on a honey- comb lattice for S = 1/2 spins using the language of projected entangled pair states(PEPS). An explicit example is given for the virtual bond dimension D = 4. Four distinct classes differing by lattice quantum numbers are found by applying the systematic classification scheme introduced by two of the authors [S. Jiang and Y. Ran, Phys. Rev. B 92, 104414 (2015)]. Lack of topological degeneracy or other conventional forms of symmetry breaking, and the existence of energy gap in the proposed wave functions, are checked by numerical calculations of the entanglement entropy and various correlation functions. Our work provides the first explicit realization of a featureless quantum insulator for spin-1/2 particles on a honeycomb lattice.

When chiral photons meet chiral fermions - Photoinduced anomalous Hall effects in Weyl semimetals

The Weyl semimetal is characterized by three-dimensional linear band touching points called Weyl nodes. These nodes come in pairs with opposite chiralities. We show that the coupling of circularly polarized photons with these chiral electrons generates a Hall conductivity without any applied magnetic field in the plane orthogonal to the light propagation. This phenomenon comes about because with all three Pauli matrices exhausted to form the three-dimensional linear dispersion, the Weyl nodes cannot be gapped. Rather, the net influence of chiral photons is to shift the positions of the Weyl nodes. Interestingly, the momentum shift is tightly correlated with the chirality of the node to produce a net anomalous Hall signal. Application of our proposal to the recently discovered TaAs family of Weyl semimetals leads to an order-of-magnitude estimate of the photoinduced Hall conductivity which is within the experimentally accessible range.

Formation of a Topological Monopole Lattice and its Dynamics in Three-dimensional Chiral Magnets

Topologically protected swirl of the magnetic texture known as the Skyrmion has become ubiqui- tous in both metallic and insulating chiral magnets. Meanwhile the existence of its three-dimensional analogue, known as the magnetic monopole, has been suggested by various indirect experimental sig- natures in MnGe compound. Theoretically, Ginzburg-Landau arguments in favor of the formation of a three-dimensional crystal of monopoles and anti-monopoles have been put forward, however no microscopic model Hamiltonian was shown to support such a phase. Here we present strong numerical evidence from Monte Carlo simulations for the formation of a rock-salt crystal structure of monopoles and anti-monopoles in short-period chiral magnets. Real-time simulation of the spin dynamics suggests there is only one collective mode in the monopole crystal state in the frequency range of several GHz for the material parameters of MnGe.

Thermal Hall Effect of Spins in a Paramagnet

Theory of Hall transport of spins in a correlated paramagnetic phase is developed. By identifying the thermal Hall current operator in the spin language, which turns out to equal the spin chirality in the pure Heisenberg model, various response functions can be derived straightforwardly. Subsequent reduction to the Schwinger boson representation of spins allows a convenient calculation of thermal and spin Hall coefficients in the paramagnetic regime using self-consistent mean-field theory. Com- parison is made to results from the Holstein-Primakoff reduction of spin operators appropriate for ordered phases.

Dynamics of magnon fluid in Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya magnet and its manifestation in magnon-Skyrmion scattering

We construct Holstein-Primakoff Hamiltonian for magnons in arbitrary slowly varying spin background, for a microscopic spin Hamiltonian consisting of ferromagnetic spin exchange,Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange, and the Zeeman term. The Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation for magnon dynamics contains several background gauge fields pertaining to local spin chirality, inhomogeneous potential, and anomalous scattering that violates the boson number conservation. Non-trivial corrections to previous formulas derived in the literature are given. Subsequent mapping to hydrodynamic fields yields the continuity equation and the Euler equation of the magnon fluid dynamics. Magnon wave scattering off a localized Skyrmion is examined numerically based on our Gross-Pitaevskii formulation. Dependence of the effective flux experienced by the impinging magnon on the Skyrmion radius is pointed out, and compared with analysis of the same problem using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

Arbitrary Chern number generation in the three-band model from momentum space

A simple, general rule for generating a three-band model with arbitrary Chern numbers is given. The rule is based on the idea of monopole charge-changing unitary operations and can be realized by two types of simple unitary operations on the original Hamiltonian. A pair of monopole charges are required to produce desired topological numbers in the three-band model. The set of rules presented here offers a way to produce lattice models of any desired Chern numbers for three-sublattice situations.

Zero-energy Bound States in Nodal Topological Lattice

Nodal topological lattice is a form of magnetic crystal with topologically non-trivial spin texture, which further exhibits a periodic array of nodes with vanishing magnetization. Electronic structure for conduction electrons strongly Hund-coupled to such nodal topological lattice is examined. Our analysis shows that each node attracts two localized states which form narrow bands through internode hybridization within the mid-gap region. Nodal bands carry a Chern number under suitable perturbations, suggesting their potential role in the topological Hall effect. Enhancement of the density of states near zero energy observable in a tunneling experiment will provide a signature of the formation of nodal topological lattice.

Nature of Orbital and Spin Rashba Coupling in the Surface Bands of SrTiO3 and KTaO3

Tight-binding models for the recently observed surface electronic bands of SrTiO3 and KTaO3 are analyzed with a view to bringing out the relevance of momentum-space chiral angular momentum structures of both orbital and spin origins. Depending on the strength of electric field associated with inversion symmetry breaking at the surface, the orbital and the accompanying spin angular momentum structures reveal complex linear and cubic dependencies in the momentum k (linear and cubic Rashba effects, respectively) in a band-specific manner. Analytical expressions for the cubic orbital and spin Rashba effects are derived by way of unitary transformation technique we developed, and compared to numerical calculations. Due to the C4v symmetry of the perovskite structure the cubic Rashba effect appears as in-plane modulations.

Theory of magneto-electric susceptibility in multiferroic chiral magnets

We present a theoretical examination of the magneto-electric response in the recently discovered multiferroic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Combining Monte Carlo simulation and Ginzburg-Landau analysis we predict the response in each of the magnetic phases, including helical, conical, ferromagnetic and Skyrmion crystal phases, both for thin film and bulk systems. A common feature for all non-collinear phases is that the magneto-electric susceptibility increases linearly with the applied magnetic field. Being both calculable and measurable, the magneto-electric susceptibility can serve as a new powerful probe to detect and investigate magnetic phases and phase transitions in multiferroic chiral magnets in general.

Fate of Topology in Spin-1 Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

One of the excitements generated by the cold atom systems is the possibility to realize, and explore, varied topological phases stemming from multi-component nature of the condensate. Popular examples are the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and the ferromagnetic (FM) phases in the three-component atomic condensate with effective spin-1, to which different topological manifolds can be assigned. It follows, from consideration of homotopy, that different sorts of topological defects will be stable in each manifold. For instance, Skyrmionic texture is believed to be a stable topological object in two-dimensional AFM spin-1 condensate. Countering such common perceptions, here we show on the basis of a new wave function decomposition scheme that there is no physical parameter regime wherein the temporal dynamics of spin-1 condensate can be described solely within AFM or FM manifold. Initial state of definite topological number prepared entirely within one particular phase must immediately evolve into a mixed state. Accordingly, the very notion of topology and topological stability within the sub-manifold of AFM or FM become invalid. Numerical simulation reveals the linear Zeeman effect to be an efficient catalyst to extract the alternate component from an initial topological object prepared entirely within one particular sub-manifold, serving as a potential new tool for "topology engineering" in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates.

Soliton Defects in One-dimensional Topological Three-band Hamiltonian

Defect formation in the one-dimensional topological three-band model is examined within both lattice and continuum models. Classic results of Jackiw-Rebbi and Rice-Mele for the soliton charge is generalized to the three-band model. The presence of the central flat band in the three-band model makes the soliton charge as a function of energy behave in a qualitatively different way from the two-band Dirac model case. Quantum field-theoretical calculation of Goldstone and Wilczek is also generalized to the three-band model to obtain the soliton charge. Diamond-chain lattice is shown to be an ideal structure to host a topological three-band structure.

Microscopic mechanism for asymmetric charge distribution in Rashba-type surface states and the origin of the the energy splitting scale

Microscopic mechanism for the Rashba-type band splitting is examined in detail. We show how asymmetric charge distribution is formed when local orbital angular momentum (OAM) and crystal momentum get interlocked due to surface effects. An electrostatic energy term in the Hamiltonian appears when such OAM and crystal momentum dependent asymmetric charge distribution is placed in an electric field produced from an inversion symmetry breaking (ISB). Analysis by using an effective Hamiltonian shows that, as the atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength increases from weak to strong, originally OAM-quenched states evolve into well-defined chiral OAM states and then to total angular momentum J-states. In addition, the energy scale of the band splitting changes from atomic SOC energy to electrostatic energy. To confirm the validity of the model, we study OAM and spin structures of Au(111) system by using an effective Hamiltonian for the d-orbitals case. As for strong SOC regime, we choose Bi2Te2Se as a prototype system. We performed circular dichroism angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments as well as first-principles calculations. We find that the effective model can explain various aspects of spin and OAM structures of the system.

Orbital Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Exchange Interaction

Superexchange calculation is performed for multi-orbital band models with broken inversion symmetry. Orbital-changing hopping terms allowed by the symmetry breaking electric field lead to a new kind of orbital exchange term closely resembling the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin exchange. The final superexchange Hamiltonian in two dimensions is expressed in terms of Gell-Mann matrices that break down as three spin operators and five nematic (quadrupole) order operators. Mean-field phase diagram exhibits a rich structure including anti-ferro-orbital, ferro-orbital, and both single and multiple spiral-orbital phases. Superexchange calculation for spinful, two-orbital model also strongly suggests a robust chiral-orbital order in the ground state.

Emergent p-wave Kondo Coupling in Multi-Orbital Bands with Mirror Symmetry Breaking

We examine Kondo effect in the periodic Anderson model for which the conduction band is of multi-orbital character and subject to mirror symmetry breaking field imposed externally. Taking p-orbital-based toy model for analysis, we find the Kondo pairing symmetry of p-wave character emerges self-consistently over some regions of parameter space and filling factor even though only the on-site Kondo hybridization is assumed in the microscopic Hamiltonian. The band structure in the Kondo-hybridized phase becomes nematic, with only two-fold symmetry, due to the p-wave Kondo coupling. The reduced symmetry should be readily observable in spectroscopic or transport measurements for heavy fermion system in a multilayer environment such as successfully grown recently.

Skyrmion dynamics and disintegration in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

Dynamics of skyrmionic spin texture in the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate is examined by analytical and numerical means. We show the skyrmion (coreless vortex) to be inherently unstable in the sense that the state initially prepared purely within the antiferromagnetic (ferromagnetic) order parameter manifold inevitably evolves into a mixture of both. The vorticity-dependent drift in the presence of the trapping potential also contributes to the disintegration of the initial spin texture manifold. We argue that the notion of a skyrmion as a topologically protected entity becomes ill defined during the dynamical evolution process.

Three-Band Model for Quantum Hall and Spin Hall Effects

Topological properties of a certain class of spinless three-band Hamiltonians are shown to be summed up by the Skyrmion number in momentum space, analogous to the case of two-band Hamiltonian. Topological tight-binding Hamiltonian on a Kagome lattice is analyzed with this view. When such a Hamiltonian is "folded", the two bands with opposite Chern numbers merge into a degenerate band exhibiting non-Abelian gauge connection. Conserved pseudo-spin current operator can be constructed in this case and used to compute the pseudo-spin Hall conductance. Our model Hamiltonians belong to the symmetry class D and AI according to the ten-fold classification scheme.

Skyrmion Dynamics in Multiferroic Insulator

Recent discovery of Skyrmion crystal phase in insulating multiferroic compound Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ calls for new ways and ideas to manipulate the Skyrmions in the absence of spin transfer torque from the conduction electrons. It is shown here that the position-dependent electric field, pointed along the direction of the average induced dipole moment of the Skyrmion, can induce the Hall motion of Skyrmion with its velocity orthogonal to the field gradient. Finite Gilbert damping produces longitudinal motion. We find a rich variety of resonance modes excited by a.c. electric field.

Microscopic Theory of Rashba Interaction in Magnetic Metal

Theory of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in magnetic metals is worked out from microscopic Hamiltonian describing d-orbitals. When structural inversion symmetry is broken, electron hopping between $d$-orbitals generates chiral ordering of orbital angular momentum, which combines with atomic spin-orbit coupling to result in the Rashba interaction. Rashba parameter characterizing the interaction is band-specific, even reversing its sign from band to band. Large enhancement of the Rashba parameter found in recent experiments is attributed to the orbital mixing of 3d magnetic atoms with non-magnetic heavy elements as we demonstrate by first-principles and tight-binding calculations.
