Pair weakening in mixed rare-earth nickel borocarbides (R,R')Ni2B2C

In this study pseudoquaternary rare-earth nickel borocarbide superconductors RxR'1-xNi2B2C have been investigated predominantly in the diluted limit x << 1 or (1 x) << 1. In all of these materials structural disorder results in a reduction of the superconducting transition temperature Tc . Depending on the selection of the rare earth elements R and R' this disorder induced deterioration of superconductivity is combined with magnetic pair breaking of Abrikosov-Gorkov type or pair breaking of non-magnetic impurities in antiferromagnetic superconductors (Morozov-type of pair breaking).

Magnetic-field induced band-structure change in CeBiPt

We report on a field-induced change of the electronic band structure of CeBiPt as evidenced by electrical-transport measurements in pulsed magnetic fields. Above ~25 T, the charge-carrier concentration increases nearly 30% with a concomitant disappearance of the Shubnikov-de Haas signal. These features are intimately related to the Ce 4f electrons since for the non-4f compound LaBiPt the Fermi surface remains unaffected. Electronic band-structure calculations point to a 4f-polarization-induced change of the Fermi-surface topology.

Structure, Tranport and Magnetism of La(0.67)Ca(0.33)Mn(1-x)Ta(x)O(3)

For the first time,we report the effect of pentavalent subtitution at the Mn site of La(0.67)Ca(0.33)MnO(3). The ferromagnetic -metallic ground state modifies to a cluster-glass insulator beyond x=0.03. The observed suppression in the transition temperatures (39K/at.%) is the largest reported for the Mn site subtituted manganites. We argue that charge state(valence) of the substituent has a dominant role in affecting the ferromagnetic - metallic ground state of CMR manganites.

Intermediate valence behavior in CeCo9Si4

The novel ternary compound CeCo$_9$Si$_4$ has been studied by means of specific heat, magnetisation, and transport measurements. Single crystal X-ray Rietveld refinements reveal a fully ordered distribution of Ce, Co and Si atoms with the tetragonal space group I4/mcm isostructural with other RCo9Si4. The smaller lattice constants of CeCo9Si4 in comparison with the trend established by other RCo9Si4 is indicative for intermediate valence of cerium. While RCo9Si4 with R= Pr, .. Tb, and Y show ferromagnetism and LaCo9Si4 is nearly ferromagnetic, CeCo9Si4 remains paramagnetic even in external fields as large as 40 T, though its electronic specific heat coefficient (g~190 mJ/molK^2) is of similar magnitude as that of metamagnetic LaCo9Si4 and weakly ferromagnetic YCo9Si4.

Evidence for strong electron-phonon coupling in MgCNi_3

The title compound is investigated by specific heat measurements in the normal and superconducting state supplemented by upper critical field transport, susceptibility and magnetization measurements. From a detailed analysis including also full potential electronic structure calculations for the Fermi surface sheets, Fermi velocities and partial densities of states the presence of both strong electron-phonon interactions and considerable pair-breaking has been revealed. The specific heat and the upper critical field data can be described to first approximation by an effective single band model close to the clean limit derived from a strongly coupled predominant hole subsystem with small Fermi velocities. However, in order to account also for Hall-conductivity and thermopower data in the literature, an effective general two-band model is proposed. This two-band model provides a flexible enough frame to describe consistently all available data within a scenario of phonon mediated s-wave superconductivity somewhat suppressed by sizeable electron-paramagnon or electron-electron Coulomb interaction. For quantitative details the relevance of soft phonons and of a van Hove type singularity in the electronic density of states near the Fermi energy is suggested.

Critical properties of the double exchange ferromagnet Nd0.4Pb0.4MnO3

Results of a study of dc-magnetization M(T, H), performed on a Nd0.6Pb0.4MnO3 single crystal in the temperature range around T_C (Curie temperature) which embraces the critical region | epsilon | = |T -T_C |/T_C <= 0.05 are reported. The magnetic data analyzed in the critical region using the Kouvel-Fisher method give the values for the T_C =156.47 +/- 0.06 K and the critical exponents, beta = 0.374 +/- 0.006 (from the temperature dependence of magnetization), and gamma = 1.329 +/- 0.003 (from the temperature dependence of initial susceptibility). The critical isotherm M(T_C, H) gives delta = 4.547 +/- 0.1. Thus the scaling law gamma+beta=delta beta is fulfilled. The critical exponents obey the single scaling-equation of state M(H, epsilon) = epsilon^b f_+/- (H/epsilon^(beta + gamma)) where, f_+ for T > T_C and f_- for T< T_C. The exponent values are very close to those expected for the universality class of 3D Heisenberg ferromagnets with short-range interactions.

Observation of minority spin character of the new electron doped manganite La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3 from tunneling magnetoresistance

We report the magnetotransport characteristics of a trilayer ferromagnetic tunnel junction build of an electron doped manganite (La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3) and a hole doped manganite (La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3). At low temperatures the junction exhibits a large positive tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), irrespective of the bias voltage. At intermediate temperatures below T_C the sign of the TMR is dependent on the bias voltage across the junction. The magnetoresistive characteristics of the junction strongly suggest that La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3 is a minority spin carrier ferromagnet with a high degree of spin polarization, i.e. a transport half metal.

MgCNi3 : Complex behavior in a strongly coupled superconductor

Polycrystalline samples of the recently discovered MgCNi3 superconductor were investigated by transport, ac susceptibility, dc magnetization and specific heat measurements in magnetic fields up to 16 T. Consistent results were obtained for the temperature dependence of the upper critical field H_c2(T) from resistance, ac susceptibility and specific heat measurements. A WHH like temperature dependence of H_c2(T) and the quadratic relationship H_c2(0) ~ T_c^2 point to an effective predominant single band behavior near the quasi clean limit. Evidence for strong electron-phonon and electron-paramagnon coupling was found analyzing the specific heat data. The corresponding s- and p-wave scenarios are briefly discussed using calculated densities of states of different Fermi surface sheets.

Current-induced conductance switching in epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 multilayers

We report on the non-linear in-plane electrical transport in coherently grown [La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3] multilayers with ultrathin (< 3 nm) single layers. Current-induced switching of the conductance, with low conductance at larger currents, is demonstrated. The conductance switching is modified under a magnetic field, resulting in an extremely large magnetoresistance of negative, or in a special case even positive, sign. Our results suggest a percolative nature of transport where a large local current density gives rise to a spin-polarizing and a thermal effect of current.

Specific heat of (Y,Lu)Ni2B2C in the mixed state

The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the electronic specific heat in the superconducting mixed state as well as the upper critical field have been measured on a (Y,Lu)Ni2B2C series to study the influence of disorder. The electronic specific heat in the vortex state shows deviations from the usual gamma(H) proportional to H-law for conventional superconductors for all samples resulting in a disorder dependent negative curvature of gamma proportional to H sup(1-beta). For samples with disorder at the R site beta and the positive curvature exponent alpha of H sub(c2) are reduced but alpha, beta remain always positive, as distinct from much stronger disorder due to Pt substions at the Ni site where alpha, beta rapidly tend to 0. Alpha shows a minimum at equal Y and Lu concentration. H sub(c2)(00, T sub(c), the curvatures of H sub(c2) and gamma(h), as well as the normal state Sommerfeld constant gamma sub(N) are reduced similarly.

Weak antiferromagnetism due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$

The antiferromagnetic insulating cuprate Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$ contains folded CuO$_2$ chains with four magnetic copper ions ($S=1/2$) per unit cell. An underlying multiorbital Hubbard model is formulated and the superexchange theory is developed to derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for this cuprate. The resulting spin Hamiltonian involves a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term and a more weak symmetric anisotropic exchange term besides the isotropic exchange interaction. The corresponding Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors of each magnetic Cu-Cu bond in the chain reveal a well defined spatial order. Both, the superexchange theory and the complementary group theoretical consideration, lead to the same conclusion on the character of this order. The analysis of the ground-state magnetic properties of the derived model leads to the prediction of an additional noncollinear modulation of the antiferromagnetic structure. This weak antiferromagnetism is restricted to one of the Cu sublattices.

Upper critical field pecularities of superconducting YNi2B2C and LuNi2B2C

We present new upper critical field Hc2(T) data in a broad temperature region from 0.3K to Tc for LuNi2B2C and YNi2B2C single crystals with well characterized low impurity scattering rates. The absolute values for all T, in particular Hc2(0), and the sizeable positive curvature (PC) of Hc2(T) at high and intermediate T are explained quantitatively within an effective two-band model. The failure of the isotropic single band approach is discussed in detail. Supported by de Haas van Alphen data, the superconductivity reveals direct insight into details of the electronic structure. The observed maximal PC near Tc gives strong evidence for clean limit type II superconductors.

Evidence for Kondo Effect in Au80Co20 Ribbons

A minimum in resistivity as a function of temperature for an as-quenched Au80Co20 ribbon prepared by melt-spinning using a wheel surface speed of 20 m s^{-1} is found at 25 K. No resistivity minimum is found for an as-quenched ribbon using a wheel surface speed of 60 m s^{-1}, however, upon heat treatment of this ribbon a resistivity minimum is recovered. The temperature of the minimum decreases with increasing total time of heat treatment. These observations are interpretted as evidence for the microstructural control of the Kondo effect typically found in dilute magnetic alloys in a giant magnetoresistance granular material.
