String clouds and radiation flows as sources of gravity in static or rotating cylinders

Static and stationary cylindrically symmetric space-times in general relativity are considered, supported by distributions of cosmic strings stretched in the azimuthal ($φ$), longitudinal ($z$) or radial ($x$) directions or and by pairs of mutually opposite radiation flows in any of these directions. For such systems, exact solutions are obtained and briefly discussed, except for radial strings (a stationary solution for them is not found); it is shown that static solutions with $z$- and $φ$-directed radiation flows do not exist, while for $z$-directed strings a solution is only possible with negative energy density. Almost all solutions under discussion contain singularities, and all stationary solutions have regions with closed timelike curves, hence only their well-behaved regions admit application to real physical situations.

A possible semiclassical bounce instead of a Schwarzschild singularity

We have previously shown that the singularity in a Schwarzschild black hole of stellar or larger mass may be avoided in a semiclassical manner by using as a source of gravity the stress-energy tensor (SET) corresponding to vacuum polarization of quantum fields, with a minimum spherical radius a few orders of magnitude larger than the Planck length. In this note we estimate the nonlocal contribution to the total SET due to particle creation from vacuum. We show that this contribution is negligibly small as compared to vacuum polarization and does not affect the previously suggested scenario.

Spinor fields in spherical symmetry. Einstein-Dirac and other space-times

We discuss the static spherically symmetric Einstein-spinor field system in the possible presence of various spinor field nonlinearities. We take into account that the spinor field energy-momentum tensor (EMT) has in general some off-diagonal components, whose vanishing due to the Einstein equations substantially affects the form of the spinor field itself and the space-time geometry. In particular, the EMT structure with any spinor field nonlinearities turns out to be the same as that of the EMT of a minimally coupled scalar field with a self-interaction potential. Therefore many results previously obtained for systems with such scalar fields are directly extended to the Einstein-spinor field system. Some special solutions are obtained and discussed, in particular, a solution for the Einstein-Dirac system (which lack asymptotic flatness) and some examples with spinor field nonlinearities.

Spherically symmetric black holes and wormholes in hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

The so-called hybrid metric-Palatini theory of gravity (HMPG), proposed in 2012 by T. Harko et al., is known to successfully describe both local (solar-system) and cosmological observations. This paper gives a complete description of static, spherically vacuum solutions of HMPG in the simplest case where its scalar-tensor representation has a zero scalar field potential $V(ϕ)$, and both Riemannian ($R$) and Palatini ($\cal R$) Ricci scalars are zero. Such a scalar-tensor theory coincides with general relativity with a phantom conformally coupled scalar field as a source of gravity. Generic asymptotically flat solutions either contain naked central singularities or describe traversable wormholes, and there is a special two-parameter family of globally regular black hole solutions with extremal horizons. In addition, there is a one-parameter family of solutions with an infinite number of extremal horizons between static regions and a spherical radius monotonically changing from region to region. It is argued that the obtained black hole and wormhole solutions are unstable under monopole perturbations. As a by-product, it is shown that a scalar-tensor theory with $V(ϕ)=0$, in which there is at least one nontrivial ($ϕ\ne \rm const$) vacuum solution with $R\equiv 0$, necessarily reduces to a theory with a conformal scalar field (the latter may be usual or phantom).

On the instability of some k-essence space-times

We study the stability properties of static, spherically symmetric configurations in k-essence theories with the Lagrangians of the form $F(X)$, $X \equiv ϕ_{,α} ϕ^{,α}$. The instability under spherically symmetric perturbations is proved for two recently obtained exact solutions for $F(X) =F_0 X^{1/3}$ and for $F(X) = F_0 X^{1/2} - 2 Λ$, where $F_0$ and $Λ$ are constants. The first solution describes a black hole in an asymptotically singular space-time, the second one contains two horizons of infinite area connected by a wormhole. It is argued that spherically symmetric k-essence configurations with $n < 1/2$ are generically unstable because the perturbation equation is not of hyperbolic type.

Potentially observable cylindrical wormholes without exotic matter in general relativity

All known solutions to the Einstein equations describing rotating cylindrical wormholes lack asymptotic flatness and therefore cannot describe wormhole entrances as local objects in our Universe. To overcome this difficulty, wormhole solutions are joined to flat asymptotic regions at some surfaces $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$. The whole configuration thus consists of three regions, the internal one containing a wormhole throat, and two flat external ones, considered in rotating reference frames. Using a special kind of anisotropic fluid respecting the Weak Energy Condition (WEC) as a source of gravity in the internal region, we show that the parameters of this configuration can be chosen in such a way that matter on both junction surfaces $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$ also respects the WEC. Closed timelike curves are shown to be absent by construction in the whole configuration. It seems to be the first example of regular twice asymptotically flat wormholes without exotic matter and without closed timelike curves, obtained in general relativity.

Rotating cylinders with anisotropic fluids in general relativity

We consider anisotropic fluids with directional pressures $p_i = w_i ρ$ ($ρ$ is the density, $w_i = $const, $i = 1,2,3$) as sources of gravity in stationary cylindrically symmetric space-times. We describe a general way of obtaining exact solutions with such sources, where the main features are splitting of the Ricci tensor into static and rotational parts and using the harmonic radial coordinate. Depending on the values of $w_i$, it appears possible to obtain general or special solutions to the Einstein equations, thus recovering some known solutions and finding new ones. Three particular examples of exact solutions are briefly described: with a stiff isotropic perfect fluid ($p = ρ$), with a distribution of cosmic strings of azimuthal direction (i.e., forming circles around the $z$ axis), and with a stationary combination of two opposite radiation flows along the $z$ axis.

Cylindrical wormholes: a search for viable phantom-free models in GR

The well-known problem of wormholes in general relativity (GR) is the necessity of exotic matter, violating the Weak Energy Condition (WEC), for their support. This problem looks easier if, instead of island-like configurations, one considers string-like ones, among them, cylindrically symmetric space-times with rotation. However, for cylindrical wormhole solutions a problem is the lacking asymptotic flatness, making it impossible to observe their entrances as local objects in our Universe. It was suggested to solve this problem by joining a wormhole solution to flat asymptotic regions at some surfaces $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$ on different sides of the throat. The configuration then consists of three regions, the internal one containing a throat and two flat external ones. We discuss different kinds of source matter suitable for describing the internal regions of such models (scalar fields, isotropic and anisotropic fluids) and present two examples where the internal matter itself and the surface matter on both junction surfaces $Σ_\pm$ respect the WEC. In one of these models the internal source is a stiff perfect fluid whose pressure is equal to its energy density, in the other it is a special kind of anisotropic fluid. Both models are free from closed timelike curves. We thus obtain examples of regular twice asymptotically flat wormhole models in GR without exotic matter and without causality violations.

On gravitational lensing by symmetric and asymmetric wormholes

We discuss the peculiarities of gravitational lensing by spherically symmetric wormholes if they are not symmetric with respect to their throats. It is noticed, in particular, that wormholes always contain the so-called photon spheres, near which the photon deflection angles can be arbitrarily large, but, in general, the throat is such a sphere only for symmetric wormholes. In some cases, photons from outside can cross the throat and return back from a neighborhood of a photon sphere if the latter is located beyond the throat. Two families of generally asymmetric wormhole configurations are considered as examples: (1) anti-Fisher wormholes with a massless phantom scalar field as a source of gravity, and (2) wormholes with a zero Ricci scalar that may be interpreted as vacuum configurations in a brane world. For these metrics, the photon effective potentials and deflection angles are found and discussed.

The Schwarzschild singularity: a semiclassical bounce?

We discuss the opportunity that the singularity inside a Schwarzschild black hole could be replaced by a regular bounce, described as a regular minimum of the spherical radius (instead of zero) and a regular maximum of the longitudinal scale (instead of infinity) in the corresponding Kantowski-Sachs metric. Such a metric in a vicinity of the bounce is shown to be a solution to the Einstein equations with the stress-energy tensor representing vacuum polarization of quantum matter fields, described by a combination of curvature-quadratic terms in the effective action. The indefinite parameters of the model can be chosen in such a way that it remains a few orders of magnitude apart from the Planck scale (say, on the GUT scale), that is, in a semiclassical regime.

On cosmology in nonlinear multidimensional gravity with multiple factor spaces

Within the scope of multidimensional Kaluza--Klein gravity with nonlinear curvature terms and two spherical extra spaces of dimensions $m$ and $n$, we study the properties of an effective action for the scale factors of the extra dimensions. Dimensional reduction leads to an effective 4D multiscalar-tensor theory. Based on qualitative estimates of the Casimir energy contribution on a physically reasonable length scale, we demonstrate the existence of such sets of initial parameters of the theory in the case $m=n$ that provide a minimum of the effective potential that yield a fine-tuned value of the effective 4D cosmological constant. The corresponding size of extra dimensions depends of which conformal frame is interpreted as the observational one: it is about three orders of magnitude larger than the standard Planck length if we adhere to the Einstein frame, but it is $n$-dependent in the Jordan frame, and its invisibility requirement restricts the total dimension to values $D = 4+2n \leq 20$.

Wormholes with fluid sources: A no-go theorem and new examples

For static, spherically symmetric space-times in general relativity (GR), a no-go theorem is proved: it excludes the existence of wormholes with flat and/or AdS asymptotic regions on both sides of the throat if the source matter is isotropic, i.e., the radial and tangential pressures coincide. It explains why in all previous attempts to build such solutions it was necessary to introduce boundaries with thin shells that manifestly violate the isotropy of matter. Under a simple assumption on the behavior of the spherical radius $r(x)$, we obtain a number of examples of wormholes with isotropic matter and one or both de Sitter asymptotic regions, allowed by the no-go theorem. We also obtain twice asymptotically flat wormholes with anisotropic matter, both symmetric and asymmetric with respect to the throat, under the assumption that the scalar curvature is zero. These solutions may be on equal grounds interpreted as those of GR with a traceless stress-energy tensor and as vacuum solutions in a brane world. For such wormholes, the traversability conditions and gravitational lensing properties are briefly discussed. As a by-product, we obtain twice asymptotically flat regular black hole solutions with up to four Killing horizons. As another by-product, we point out intersection points in families of integral curves for the function $A(x) = g_{tt}$, parametrized by its values on the throat.

Comment on "Construction of regular black holes in general relativity"

It is claimed that the paper by Zhong-Ying Fan and Xiaobao Wang [Phys. Rev. D 94, 124027 (2016), arXiv: 1610.02636] on nonlinear electrodynamics coupled to general relativity, being correct in general, in some respects repeats previously obtained results without giving proper references. There is also an important point missing in this paper, but necessary for understanding the physics of the system: in solutions with an electric charge, a regular center requires a non-Maxwell behavior of the Lagrangian function $L(f),\ (f= F_{μν} F^{μν})$ at small $f$. Therefore, in all electric regular black hole solutions with a Reissner-Nordström asymptotic, the Lagrangian $L(f)$ is different in different parts of space, and the electromagnetic field behaves in a singular way at surfaces where $L(f)$ suffers branching.

Nonlinear electrodynamics, regular black holes and wormholes

We consider spherically symmetric configurations in general relativity, supported by nonlinear electromagnetic fields with gauge-invariant Lagrangians depending on the single invariant $f = F_{μν} F^{μν}$. Static black hole and solitonic solutions are briefly described, both with only an electric or magnetic charge and with both nonzero charges (the dyonic ones). It is stressed that only pure magnetic solutions can be completely nonsingular. For dyonic systems, apart from a general scheme of obtaining solutions in quadratures for an arbitrary Lagrangian function $L(f)$, an analytic solution is found for the truncated Born-Infeld theory (depending on the invariant $f$ only). Furthermore, considering spherically symmetric metrics with two independent functions of time, we find a natural generalization of the class of wormholes found previously by Arellano and Lobo with a time-dependent conformal factor. Such wormholes are shown to be only possible for some particular choices of the function $L(f)$, having no Maxwell weak-field limit.

Inhomogeneous compact extra dimensions

We show that an inhomogeneous compact extra space possesses two necessary features --- their existence does not contradict the observable value of the cosmological constant $Λ_4$ in pure $f(R)$ theory, and the extra dimensions are stable relative to the "radion mode" of perturbations, the only mode considered. For a two-dimensional extra space, both analytical and numerical solutions for the metric are found, able to provide a zero or arbitrarily small $Λ_4$. A no-go theorem has also been proved, that maximally symmetric compact extra spaces are inconsistent with 4D Minkowski space in the framework of pure $f(R)$ gravity.

Dyonic configurations in nonlinear electrodynamics coupled to general relativity

We consider static, spherically symmetric configurations in general relativity, supported by nonlinear electromagnetic fields with gauge-invariant Lagrangians depending on the single invariant $f = F_{μν} F^{μν}$. After a brief review on black hole (BH) and solitonic solutions, obtained so far with pure electric or magnetic fields, an attempt is made to obtain dyonic solutions, those with both electric and magnetic charges. A general scheme is suggested, leading to solutions in quadratures for an arbitrary Lagrangian function $L(f)$ (up to some monotonicity restrictions); such solutions are expressed in terms of $f$ as a new radial coordinate instead of the usual coordinate $r$. For the truncated Born-Infeld theory (depending on the invariant $f$ only), a general dyonic solution is obtained in terms of $r$. A feature of interest in this solution is the existence of a special case with a self-dual electromagnetic field, $f \equiv 0$ and the Reissner-Nordström metric.

On wormholes with long throats and the stability problem

We construct explicit examples of globally regular static, spherically symmetric solutions of general relativity with a phantom scalar field as the source of gravity, describing traversable wormholes with flat asymptotic regions on both sides of the throat as well as regular black holes, in particular, those called black universes. To explain why such phantom fields are not observed under usual conditions, we invoke the concept of "invisible ghosts," which means that the phantom field decays quickly enough at infinity and is there too weak to be observed. This approach leads to wormhole models in which the spherical radius is almost constant in some range of the radial coordinate near the throat, forming a "long throat". We discuss the peculiar features and difficulties of the stability problem for such configurations. It is shown that the limiting case of a "maximally long throat" has the form of an unstable model with the Nariai metric. This allows us to conjecture that a long throat does not stabilize wormholes with a scalar source.

Static, spherically symmetric solutions with a scalar field in Rastall gravity

Rastall's theory belongs to the class of non-conservative theories of gravity. In vacuum, the only non-trivial static, spherically symmetric solution is the Schwarzschild one, except in a very special case. When a canonical scalar field is coupled to the gravity sector in this theory, new exact solutions appear for some values of the Rastall parameter $a$. Some of these solutions describe the same space-time geometry as the recently found solutions in the $k$-essence theory with a power function for the kinetic term of the scalar field. There is a large class of solutions (in particular, those describing wormholes and regular black holes) whose geometry coincides with that of solutions of GR coupled to scalar fields with nontrivial self-interaction potentials; the form of these potentials, however, depends on the Rastall parameter $a$. We also note that all solutions of GR with a zero trace of the energy-momentum tensor, including black-hole and wormhole ones, may be re-interpreted as solutions of Rastall's theory.
