We review the present understanding of the nucleon transversity distribution and Collins fragmentation function, based on Ref.\cite{Efremov:2006qm}, and discuss how Drell-Yan experiments will improve it.
In inclusive deep-inelastic lepton-hadron scattering multi-photon exchange between the leptonic and the hadronic part of the process causes single spin asymmetries. The asymmetries exist for a polarized target as well as a polarized incoming or outgoing lepton, if the polarization vector has a component transverse with respect to the reaction plane. The spin dependent parts of the single polarized cross sections are suppressed like $α_{em} m_{pol}/Q$ - where $m_{pol}$ denotes the mass of the polarized particle - compared to the leading terms of the cross section for unpolarized or double-polarized deep-inelastic scattering. Both the target and the beam spin asymmetry are evaluated in the parton model. In the calculation only quark-quark correlators are included. While this approximation turns out to be justified for the lepton spin asymmetries, it is not sufficient for the target asymmetry.
On the basis of a fit to the Sivers effect in deep-inelastic scattering, we make predictions for single-spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process at RHIC.
The Collins fragmentation function is extracted from HERMES data on azimuthal single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, and BELLE data on azimuthal asymmetries in electron positron annihilations. A Gaussian model is assumed for the distribution of transverse parton momenta and predictions are used from the chiral quark-soliton model for the transversity distribution function. We find that the HERMES and BELLE data yield a consistent picture of the Collins fragmentation function which is compatible with COMPASS data and the information previously obtained from an analysis of DELPHI data. Estimates for future experiments are made.
The dependence of the nucleon mass on the mass of the pion is studied in the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. A remarkable agreement is observed with lattice data from recent full dynamical simulations. The possibility and limitations to use the model results as a guideline for the chiral extrapolation of lattice data are discussed.
The Sivers mechanism gives rise to a non-zero average transverse momentum of partons inside a transversely polarized target. According to a sum rule of Burkardt this transverse momentum vanishes when summing over all partons. We explicitly check the Burkardt sum rule by means of one-loop calculations for a quark target in perturbative QCD and for a diquark spectator model of the nucleon. In both cases the sum rule is fulfilled.
The Sivers function is extracted from HERMES data on single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. Our analysis use a simple Gaussian model for the distribution of transverse parton momenta, together with the flavor dependence given by the leading 1/Nc approximation and a neglect of the Sivers antiquark distribution. We find that within the errors of the data these approximations are sufficient.
The Sivers function is extracted from HERMES data on single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. The result is used for making predictions for the Sivers effect in the Drell-Yan process.
A comparison is given of the various recently published extractions of the Sivers functions from the HERMES and COMPASS data on single-transverse spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering.
The possible existence of higher multi-quark flavor multiplets of baryons is investigated. We argue that the S-matrix should have poles with any quantum numbers, including those which are exotic. This argument provides a novel justification for the existence of hadrons with arbitrary exotic structure. Though it does not constitute a proof, there are still no theoretical arguments against exotics. We then consider KN and piN scattering. Conventional and modified partial-wave analyses provide several sets of candidates for correlated pairs (Theta1, Delta), each of which could label a related 27-plet. Properties of the pairs (masses, mass orderings, spin-parity quantum numbers) do not quite correspond to the current theoretical expectations. Decay widths of the candidates are either wider or narrower than expected. Possible reasons for such disagreements are briefly discussed.
Several positivity bounds are derived for generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with helicity flip.
We briefly review the formulation of chiral quark soliton model and explain the difference and similarities with the Skyrme model. Next, we apply the model to calculate non-exotic and exotic mass spectra. We concentrate on large $N_{c}$ counting both for mass splittings and decay widths. It is shown that pure large $N_{c}$ arguments do not explain the small width of exotic pentaquark states.
The general parameterization of the quark-quark correlation function for a spin-1/2 hadron is considered. The presence of the Wilson line ensuring color gauge invariance of the correlator induces structures that were not given explicitly in the existing literature. In particular, the general form of the transverse momentum dependent correlator entering various hard scattering processes is derived. In this case two new time-reversal odd parton distributions appear at the twist-3 level.
The Sivers parton distribution has been predicted to obey a particular ``universality relation'', namely to have opposite sign in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and the Drell-Yan process. We discuss how, on the basis of present HERMES data, this remarkable prediction of the QCD factorization approach to the description of single spin asymmetries related to the Sivers effect could be checked experimentally in future experiments at PAX and COMPASS.
The unpolarized spin-flip isoscalar generalized parton distribution function (E^u+E^d)(x,xi,t) is studied in the large-Nc limit at a low normalization point in the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. This is the first study of generalized parton distribution functions in this model, which appear only at the subleading order in the large-Nc limit. Particular emphasis is put therefore on the demonstration of the theoretical consistency of the approach. The forward limit of (E^u+E^d)(x,xi,t) of which only the first moment -- the anomalous isoscalar magnetic moment of the nucleon -- is known phenomenologically, is computed numerically. Observables sensitive to (E^u+E^d)(x,xi,t) are discussed.
Estimates are given for the double spin asymmetry in lepton-pair production from collisions of transversely polarized protons and antiprotons for the kinematics of the recently proposed PAX experiment at GSI on the basis of predictions for the transversity distribution from the chiral quark soliton model.
A review is given on single spin asymmetries in deep inelastic semi-inclusive scattering (SIDIS) and their possible theoretical understanding in the framework of QCD-induced factorization approach, wherefore predictions for transversity from the chiral quark soliton model are used. Arising difficulties to interpret most recent SIDIS data, and the possibility to access the transversity distribution in the Drell-Yan process are discussed.
