Decay properties of new D-mesons

We consider radiative and pionic decays of the new D_s-mesons in the framework of a phenomenologically motivated approach. Present data on ratios of the two kinds of decays can be described without explicit using a 4-quark component. Most probably, the isospin violation in decays of different D_s-mesons is not universal, and the binding potential should be different from Coulombic. New precise measurements may provide further clarification for the nature of the D_s excited states.

Collins effect and single spin azimuthal asymmetries in the HERMES and COMPASS experiments

Predictions are made for single spin azimuthal asymmetries due to the Collins effect in pion production from semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering off transversely and longitudinally polarized targets for the HERMES and COMPASS experiments. The x-dependence of the asymmetries is evaluated using the parton distribution functions from the chiral quark-soliton model. The overall normalization of the predicted asymmetries is determined by the information on the Collins fragmentation function extracted from previous HERMES data on azimuthal asymmetries from a longitudinally polarized target. The single spin asymmetries from the transversely polarized proton target are found to be about 20% for positive and neutral pions both at HERMES and COMPASS. For a longitudinally polarized target we obtain for COMPASS a sin(phi) asymmetry of 1% and a sin(2phi) asymmetry of about 3%.

Sivers vs. Collins effect in azimuthal single spin asymmetries in pion production in SIDIS

Recently it has been argued that the transverse momentum dependent twist-2 Sivers distribution function does not vanish in QCD. Therefore both, the Collins and Sivers effects, should be considered in order to explain the azimuthal single spin asymmetries A(UL) in pion production in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic lepton scattering of a longitudinally polarized target. On the basis of presently available phenomenological information on the Sivers function we estimate that for those asymmetries A(UL) in the kinematic region of the HERMES experiments the Sivers effect can be neglected with respect to the Collins effect. It is argued that the same feature holds also for the COMPASS and CLAS experiments. This justifies theoretical approaches to understand the HERMES data on the basis of the Collins effect only.

Lorentz invariance relations among parton distributions revisited

We revisit the derivation of the so-called Lorentz invariance relations between parton distributions. In the most important cases these relations involve twist-3 and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. It is shown that these relations are violated if the path-ordered exponential is taken into account in the quark correlator.

Azimuthal asymmetries at CLAS: Extraction of e^a(x) and prediction of A_{UL}

First information on the chirally odd twist-3 proton distribution function e(x) is extracted from the azimuthal asymmetry, A_{LU}, in the electro-production of pions from deeply inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons off unpolarized protons, which has been recently measured by CLAS collaboration. Furthermore parameter-free predictions are made for azimuthal asymmetries, A_{UL}, from scattering of an unpolarized beam on a polarized proton target for CLAS kinematics.

Azimuthal asymmetries and Collins analyzing power

Spin azimuthal asymmetries in pion electro-production in deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized protons, measured by HERMES, are well reproduced theoretically with no adjustable parameters. Predictions for azimuthal asymmetries for a longitudinally polarized deuteron target are given. The z-dependence of the Collins fragmentation function is extracted. The first information on e(x) is extracted from CLAS A_LU asymmetry.

Predictions for azimuthal asymmetries in pion and kaon production in SIDIS off a longitudinally polarized deuterium target at HERMES

Predictions are made for azimuthal asymmetries in pion and kaon production from SIDIS off a longitudinally polarized deuterium target for HERMES kinematics, based on information on the 'Collins fragmentation function' from DELPHI data and on predictions for the transversity distribution function from non-perturbative calculations in the chiral quark-soliton model. There are no free parameters in the approach, which has been already successfully applied to explain the azimuthal asymmetries from SIDIS off polarized proton targets observed by HERMES and SMC.

SU(3) Symmetry Breaking and Polarized Parton Densities

We analyze the semileptonic weak decays of the octet baryons in a "model independent" approach, based on the algebraic structure of the Chiral Quark-Soliton Model. We argue that this analysis is in fact more general than the model itself. While the symmetry breaking for the semileptonic decays themselves is not strong, other quantities like $Δs$ and $ΔΣ$ are much more affected. We calculate $ΔΣ$ and $Δq$ for all octet baryons. Unfortunately, large experimental errors of $Ξ^-$ decays propagate in our analysis, in particular, in the case of $ΔΣ$ and $Δs$. Only if the errors for these decays are reduced, the accurate theoretical predictions for $ΔΣ$ and $Δs$ will be possible.

Azimuthal asymmetry in electro-production of neutral pions in SIDIS

Recently HERMES has observed an azimuthal asymmetry in electro-production of neutral pions in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of unpolarized positrons off longitudinally polarized protons. This asymmetry (like those observed in the production of charged pions) is well reproduced theoretically by using the non-perturbative calculation of the proton transversity distribution in the effective chiral quark-soliton model combined with experimental DELPHI-data on the new T-odd Collins fragmentation function. There are no free, adjustable parameters in the analysis. Using the $z$-dependence of the HERMES azimuthal asymmetry and the calculated transversity distributions the z-dependence of the Collins fragmentation function is obtained. The value obtained from HERMES data is consistent with the DELPHI result, even though these results refer to different scales.

Hard Exclusive Reactions and the Structure of Hadrons

We outline in detail the properties of generalized parton distributions (GPDs), which contain new information on the structure of the nucleon and which enter the description of hard exclusive reactions. We highlight the physics content of the GPDs and discuss the quark GPDs in the large $N_c$ limit and within the context of the chiral quark-soliton model. Guided by this physics, we then present a general parametrization for these GPDs. Subsequently we discuss how these GPDs enter in a wide variety of hard electroproduction processes and how they can be accessed from them. We consider in detail deeply virtual Compton scattering and the hard electroproduction of mesons. We identify a list of key observables which are sensitive to the various nucleon structure aspects contained in the GPDs and which can be addressed by present and future experiments.

Spin-dependent twist-4 matrix elements from the instanton vacuum: Flavor-singlet and nonsinglet

We estimate the twist-4 spin-1 nucleon matrix element f_2 in an instanton-based description of the QCD vacuum. In addition to the flavor-nonsinglet we compute also the flavor-singlet matrix element, which appears in next-to-leading order of the (1/N_c)-expansion. The corresponding twist-3 spin-2 matrix elements d_2 are suppressed in the packing fraction of the instanton medium, (\bar ρ)/(\bar R) << 1. We use our results to estimate the leading (1/Q^2) power corrections to the first moment of the proton and neutron spin structure functions G_1, as well as the intrinsic charm contribution to the nucleon spin.

Angular distributions in hard exclusive production of pion pairs

Using the leading order amplitudes of hard exclusive electroproduction of pion pairs we have analyzed the angular distribution of the two produced particles. At leading twist a pion pair can be produced only in an isovector or an isoscalar state. We show that certain components of the angular distribution only get contributions from the interference of the I=1 and the (much smaller) I=0 amplitude. Therefore our predictions prove to be a good probe of isospin zero pion pair production. We predict effects of a measurable size that could be observed at experiments like HERMES. We also discuss how hard exclusive pion pair production can provide us with new information on the effective chiral Lagrangian.

Transversity distributions in the nucleon in the large-N_c limit

We compute the quark and antiquark transversity distributions in the nucleon at a low normalization point of 600 MeV in the large-$N_c$ limit, where the nucleon can be described as a soliton of an effective chiral theory (chiral quark-soliton model). The flavor-nonsinglet distributions, $δu(x) - δd(x)$ and $δ\bar u(x) - δ\bar d(x)$, appear in leading order of the $1/N_c$-expansion, while the flavor-singlet distributions, $δu(x) + δd(x)$ and $δ\bar u(x) + δ\bar d(x)$, are non-zero only in next-to-leading order. The transversity quark and antiquark distributions are found to be significantly different from the longitudinally polarized distributions $Δu (x) \pm Δd (x)$ and $Δ\bar u (x) \pm Δ\bar d (x)$, respectively, in contrast to the prediction of the naive non-relativistic quark model. We show that this affects the predictions for the spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan pair production in transversely polarized pp and ppbar collisions.

Electron Scattering with Polarized Targets at TESLA

Measurements of polarized electron-nucleon scattering can be realized at the TESLA linear collider facility with projected luminosities that are about two orders of magnitude higher than those expected of other experiments at comparable energies. Longitudinally polarized electrons, accelerated as a small fraction of the total current in the e+ arm of TESLA, can be directed onto a solid state target that may be either longitudinally or transversely polarized. A large variety of polarized parton distribution and fragmentation functions can be determined with unprecedented accuracy, many of them for the first time. A main goal of the experiment is the precise measurement of the x- and Q^2-dependence of the experimentally totally unknown quark transversity distributions that will complete the information on the nucleon's quark spin structure as relevant for high energy processes. Comparing their Q^2-evolution to that of the corresponding helicity distributions constitutes an important precision test of the predictive power of QCD in the spin sector. Measuring transversity distributions and tensor charges allows access to the hitherto unmeasured chirally odd operators in QCD which are of great importance to understand the role of chiral symmetry. The possibilities of using unpolarized targets and of experiments with a real photon beam turn TESLA-N into a versatile next-generation facility at the intersection of particle and nuclear physics.
