Theory for Spin-Polarized Oscillations in Nonlinear Magneto-Optics due to Quantum Well States

Using an electronic tight-binding theory we calculate the nonlinear magneto-optical response from an x-Cu/1Fe/Cu(001) film as a function of frequency and Cu overlayer thickness (x=3 ... 25). We find very strong spin-polarized quantum well oscillations in the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect (NOLIMOKE). These are enhanced by the large density of Fe $d$ states close to the Fermi level acting as intermediate states for frequency doubling. In good agreement with experiment we find two oscillation periods of 6-7 and 11 monolayers the latter being more pronounced.

Theory for the Dependence of Optical Second Harmonic Generation Intensity on Non-equilibrium Electron Temperatures at Metal Surfaces

We present a theory for the electron-temperature dependence $T_{el}$ of optical second harmonic generation (SHG). Such an analysis is required to study the dynamics of metallic systems with many hot electrons not at equilibrium with the lattice. Using a tight-binding theory for the nonlinear susceptibility \cwtel and the Fresnel coefficients we present results for the SHG intensity \iwtel for a Cu monolayer. In the case of linear optical response we find that the intensity will decrease monotonously for increasing $T_{el}$. In agreement with experiment we find a frequency range where \iwtel may be enhanced or reduced depending on electron temperature. Note, \cwtel rather than the Fresnel coefficients determines essentially the temperature dependence. Our theory yields also that SHG probes effects due to hot electrons more sensitively than linear optics. We also discuss the $T_{el}$-dependence of SHG for Au and Ag.

Theory for the Doping Dependence of Spin Fluctuation Induced Shadow States in High-T$_{c}$ Superconductors

We analyze the doping dependence of the intensity and energetical position of shadow states in high -T$_{c}$ superconductors within the 2D Hubbard model and using our recently developed numerical method for the self consistent summation of bubble and ladder diagrams. It is shown that shadow states resulting from short range antiferromagnetic correlations occur for small but finite excitation energies which decrease for decreasing doping, reflecting a dynamically broken symmetry with increasing lifetime. Simultanously, the intensity of these new states increases, the quasiparticle dispersion is strongly flattened, and a pseudogap in the density of states occurs. Finally, we discuss the importance of flat bands at the Fermi level and nesting of the Fermi surface as general prerequisites for the observability of shadow states.

Theory for the nonlinear optical response of a nonspherical metal cluster

Using classical electrodynamics we determine the higher harmonic radiation by a nonspherical metal cluster in form of a matrix formalism. Extending the theory for the source of the higher harmonic radiation for spherical metal clusters as introduced by Östling et al. [Z. Phys. D {\bf 28}, 169 (1993)] we calculate the sources for nonspherical particles. Employing these sources we develop the nonlinear Mie theory and determine the radiated higher harmonic fields generated by the cluster. Our theory is valid for arbitrary shape and arbitrary complex refractive index for cluster sizes much smaller and comparable to the wavelength of the incident light.

Theory for Superconducting Properties of the Cuprates: Doping Dependence of the Electronic Excitations and Shadow States

The superconducting phase of the 2D one-band Hubbard model is studied within the FLEX approximation and by using an Eliashberg theory. We investigate the doping dependence of $T_c$, of the gap function $Δ({\bf k},ω)$ and of the effective pairing interaction. Thus we find that $T_c$ becomes maximal for $13 \; \%$ doping. In {\it overdoped} systems $T_c$ decreases due to the weakening of the antiferromagnetic correlations, while in the {\it underdoped} systems due to the decreasing quasi particle lifetimes. Furthermore, we find {\it shadow states} below $T_c$ which affect the electronic excitation spectrum and lead to fine structure in photoemission experiments.

Electronic Theory for the Transition from Fermi-Liquid to Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in High-T$_{c}$ Superconductors

We analyze the breakdown of Fermi-liquid behavior within the 2D Hubbard model as function of doping using our recently developed numerical method for the self consistent summation of bubble and ladder diagrams. For larger doping concentrations the system behaves like a conventional Fermi-liquid and for intermediate doping similar to a marginal Fermi-liquid. However, for smaller doping pronounced deviations from both pictures occur which are due to the increasing importance of the short range antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. This is closely related to the experimental observed shadow states in the normal state of high-$T_c$ superconductors. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of our results for transport experiments.

Theory of Nonlinear Magneto-Optics

Nonlinear magneto-optics is a very sensitive fingerprint of the electronic, magnetic, and atomic structure of surfaces, interfaces, and thin ferromagnetic films. Analyzing theoretically the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect for thin films of Fe(001) and at Fe surfaces we demonstrate exemplarily how various electronic material properties of ferromagnets , such as the $d$-band width, the magnetization, the substrate lattice constant, and the film-thickness dependence can be extracted from the calculated nonlinear Kerr spectra. Furthermore, we show how the substrate $d$ electrons (Cu(001)) affect the nonlinear Kerr spectra even without being themselves spin-polarized and without film-substrate hybridization. We show that the Kerr rotation angle in second harmonic generation is enhanced by one to two orders of magnitude compared to the linear Kerr angle and how symmetry can be used to obtain the direction of magnetization in thin films and at buried interfaces from nonlinear magneto-optics.

Simple theory for spin-lattice relaxation in metallic rare earth ferromagnets

The spin-lattice relaxation time $τ_{SL}$ is a key quantity both for the dynamical response of ferromagnets excited by laser pulses and as the speed limit of magneto-optical recording. Extending the theory for the electron paramagnetic resonance of magnetic impurities to spin-lattice relaxation in ferromagnetic rare earths we calculate $τ_{SL}$ for Gd and find a value of 48 ps in very good agreement with time-resolved spin-polarized photoemission experiments. We argue that the time scale for $τ_{SL}$ in metals is essentially given by the spin-orbit induced magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy.

Nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr spectra of thin ferromagnetic iron films calculated with ab initio theory

Using a spin-polarized full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method we present calculations of the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect for thin bcc Fe films within a slab geometry. Film layer dependent contributions to the Kerr spectrum are determined. Thus, we calculate the magneto-optical Kerr spectra for the linear and nonlinear case. Our results show clearly that the Kerr spectra of thin films are characteristicly different from those at surfaces of bulk materials. In the case of linear Kerr spectra of Au/Fe(bcc)/Au(001) films our theoretical results are in good agreement with observed frequency- and thickness-dependent spectra.

Theory for the Interdependence of High-T$_c$ Superconductivity and Dynamical Spin Fluctuations

The doping dependence of the superconducting state for the 2D one-band Hubbard Hamiltonian is determined. By using an Eliashberg-type theory, we find that the gap function $Δ_{\bf k}$ has a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry in momentum space and T$_c$ becomes maximal for $13 \; \%$ doping. Since we determine the dynamical excitations directly from real frequency axis calculations, we obtain new structures in the angular resolved density of states related to the occurrence of {\it shadow states} below T$_c$. Explaining the anomalous behavior of photoemission and tunneling experiments in the cuprates, we find a strong interplay between $d$-wave superconductivity and dynamical spin fluctuations.

Electronic Theory for the Nonlinear Magneto-Optical Response of Transition-Metals at Surfaces and Interfaces: Dependence of the Kerr-Rotation on Polarization and on the Magnetic Easy Axis

We extend our previous study of the polarization dependence of the nonlinear optical response to the case of magnetic surfaces and buried magnetic interfaces. We calculate for the longitudinal and polar configuration the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle. In particular, we show which tensor elements of the susceptibilities are involved in the enhancement of the Kerr rotation in nonlinear optics for different configurations and we demonstrate by a detailed analysis how the direction of the magnetization and thus the easy axis at surfaces and buried interfaces can be determined from the polarization dependence of the nonlinear magneto-optical response, since the nonlinear Kerr rotation is sensitive to the electromagnetic field components instead of merely the intensities. We also prove from the microscopic treatment of spin-orbit coupling that there is an intrinsic phase difference of 90$^{\circ }$ between tensor elements which are even or odd under magnetization reversal in contrast to linear magneto-optics. Finally, we compare our results with several experiments on Co/Cu films and on Co/Au and Fe/Cr multilayers. We conclude that the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr-effect determines uniquely the magnetic structure and in particular the magnetic easy axis in films and at multilayer interfaces.

Theory for the excitation spectrum of High-T$_c superconductors : quasiparticle dispersion and shadows of the Fermi surface

Using a new method for the solution of the FLEX-equations, which allows the determination of the self energy $Σ_{\bf k}(ω)$ of the $2D$ Hubbard model on the real frequency axis, we calculate the doping dependence of the quasi-particle excitations of High-T$_c$ superconductors. We obtain new results for the shadows of the Fermi surface, their dependence on the deformation of the quasi particle dispersion, an anomalous $ω$-dependence of ${\rm Im}Σ_{\bf k}(ω)$ and a related violation of the Luttinger theorem. This sheds new light on the influence of short range magnetic order on the low energy excitations and its significance for photoemission experiments.

Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy Energy of a Transition Metal Monolayer: A Non-perturbative Theory

The magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy $E_{anis}$ for a monolayer of Fe and Ni is determined using a fully convergent tight-binding calculation including $s$-$d$ hybridization. The spin-orbit interaction $λ_{so}$ is treated non-perturbatively. Remarkably, we find $E_{anis}\proptoλ_{so}^2$ and important contributions to $E_{anis}$ due to the lifting of degeneracies near the Fermi-level. This is supported by the calculated decrease of the anisotropy energy with increasing temperature on a scale of several hundred K. Our results clarify the present debate on the origin of $E_{anis}$.

Theory for Nonlinear Mie-Scattering from Spherical Metal Clusters

Using classical electrodynamics we determine the angular dependence of the light intensities radiated in second and third harmonic generation by spherical metal clusters. Forward and backward scattering is analyzed in detail. Also resonance effects in the integrated intensities are studied. Our work treats the case of intermediate cluster sizes. Thus it completes the scattering theory fo spherical clusters between Rayleigh-type analysis for small spheres and geometrical optics for spheres much larger than the wavelength for nonlinear optics. Since the particle size sensitivity of Mie-scattering is increased by nonlinearity, the results can be used to extract sizes of small particles from nonlinear optics. (submitted to Phys. Rev. B)

Theory for the Nonlinear Optical Response of Transition-Metals: Polarization Dependence as a Fingerprint of the Electronic Structure at Surfaces and Interfaces

We show that the nonlinear optical response reflects sensitively the electronic structure of transition-metal surfaces and interfaces. $d$ and $s$ electrons may contribute rather differently to the second harmonic generation (SHG) signal. This results from the different sensitivity of $d$ and $s$ electrons to surface and symmetry changes. Consequently, SHG for noble metals shows a by far larger dependence on the polarization of the incoming light than for transition metals like Fe, Co, Ni, in particular at lower frequencies. The theoretical results are compared with recent measurements. We conclude that the SHG yield is in addition to the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr-effect a sensitive fingerprint of the electronic structure at surfaces and interfaces.
