Doping dependence of the Neel temperature in Mott-Hubbard antiferromagnets: Effect of vortices

The rapid destruction of long-range antiferromagnetic order upon doping of Mott-Hubbard antiferromagnetic insulators is studied within a generalized Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless renormalization group theory in accordance with recent calculations suggesting that holes dress with vortices. We calculate the doping-dependent Neel temperature in good agreement with experiments for high-Tc cuprates. Interestingly, the critical doping where long-range order vanishes at zero temperature is predicted to be xc ~ 0.02, independently of any energy scales of the system.

Theory for two-photon photoemission: transport and temperature effects

Using a theory which treats on equal footing transport of excited electrons and electron-phonon scattering, we are able to explain the temperature dependence of the relaxation time in Cu as recently observed by Petek, Nagano, and Ogawa. We show that the unexpected increase of the relaxation time with temperature results from the drastic change of the electron motion due to the efficiency of electron-phonon scattering: the transport is ballistic at low temperature and gets diffusive at room temperature. Finally, our theory also reproduces the experimental measurements of the two-photon photoemission (2PPE) intensity as a function of the pump-probe delay.

Dynamics of Excited Electrons in Copper and Ferromagnetic Transition Metals: Theory and Experiment

Both theoretical and experimental results for the dynamics of photoexcited electrons at surfaces of Cu and the ferromagnetic transition metals Fe, Co, and Ni are presented. A model for the dynamics of excited electrons is developed, which is based on the Boltzmann equation and includes effects of photoexcitation, electron-electron scattering, secondary electrons (cascade and Auger electrons), and transport of excited carriers out of the detection region. From this we determine the time-resolved two-photon photoemission (TR-2PPE). Thus a direct comparison of calculated relaxation times with experimental results by means of TR-2PPE becomes possible. The comparison indicates that the magnitudes of the spin-averaged relaxation time τand of the ratio τ_\uparrow/τ_\downarrow of majority and minority relaxation times for the different ferromagnetic transition metals result not only from density-of-states effects, but also from different Coulomb matrix elements M. Taking M_Fe > M_Cu > M_Ni = M_Co we get reasonable agreement with experiments.

Dynamics of Excited Electrons in Copper: Role of Auger Electrons

Within a theoretical model based on the Boltzmann equation, we analyze in detail the structure of the unusual peak recently observed in the relaxation time in Cu. In particular, we discuss the role of Auger electrons in the electron dynamics and its dependence on the d-hole lifetime, the optical transition matrix elements and the laser pulse duration. We find that the Auger contribution to the distribution is very sensitive to both the d-hole lifetime tau_h and the laser pulse duration tau_l and can be expressed as a monotonic function of tau_l/tau_h. We have found that for a given tau_h, the Auger contribution is significantly smaller for a short pulse duration than for a longer one. We show that the relaxation time at the peak depends linearly on the d-hole lifetime, but interestingly not on the amount of Auger electrons generated. We provide a simple expression for the relaxation time of excited electrons which shows that its shape can be understood by a phase space argument and its amplitude is governed by the d-hole lifetime. We also find that the height of the peak depends on both the ratio of the optical transition matrix elements R=|M_{d \to sp}|^2/|M_{sp \to sp}|^2 and the laser pulse duration. Assuming a reasonable value for the ratio, namely R = 2, and a d-hole lifetime of tau_h=35 fs, we obtain for the calculated height of the peak Delta tau_{th}=14 fs, in fair agreement with Delta tau_{exp} \approx 17 fs measured for polycrystalline Cu.

Theoretical analysis of Cooper-pair phase fluctuations in underdoped cuprates: a spin-fluctuation exchange study

We study Cooper-pair phase fluctuations in cuprate superconductors for a spin fluctuation pairing interaction. Using an electronic theory we calculate in particular for the underdoped cuprate superconductors the superfluid density $n_s(T)$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c(x) \propto n_s$ below which phase coherent Cooper-pairs occur, and $T_c^{*}(x)$ where the phase incoherent Cooper-pairs disappear. Also we present results for the penetration depth $λ(x,T)$ and for the weak pseudogap temperature $T^{*}(x)$ at which a gap structure occurs in the spectral density. A Meißner effect is obtained only for $T < T_c$. We find that phase fluctuations become increasingly important in the underdoped regime and lead to a reduction of $T_c$ in good agreement with the experimental situation.

'Theory for the enhanced induced magnetization in coupled magnetic trilayers in the presence of spin fluctuations'

Motivated by recent experiments, the effect of the interlayer exchange interaction $J_{inter}$ on the magnetic properties of coupled Co/Cu/Ni trilayers is studied theoretically. Here the Ni film has a lower Curie temperature $T_{C,\rm Ni}$ than the Co film in case of decoupled layers. We show that by taking into account magnetic fluctuations the interlayer coupling induces a strong magnetization for $T\gtsim T_{C,\rm Ni}$ in the Ni film. For an increasing $J_{inter}$ the resonance-like peak of the longitudinal Ni susceptibility is shifted to larger temperatures, whereas its maximum value decreases strongly. A decreasing Ni film thickness enhances the induced Ni magnetization for $T\gtsim T_{C,\rm Ni}$. The measurements cannot be explained properly by a mean field estimate, which yields a ten times smaller effect. Thus, the observed magnetic properties indicate the strong effect of 2D magnetic fluctuations in these layered magnetic systems. The calculations are performed with the help of a Heisenberg Hamiltonian and a Green's function approach.

Theory for underdoped high-T_c superconductors: effects of phase fluctuations

In underdoped cuprates, T_c is thought to be determined by Cooper pair phase fluctuations because of the small superfluid density n_s. Experimentally, T_c is found to scale with n_s. The fluctuation-exchange approximation (FLEX) in its standard form fails to predict this behavior of T_c since it does not include phase fluctuations. We therefore extend the FLEX to include them selfconsistently. We present results for T_c[n_s,x], where x is the doping.

Influence of Electron-Phonon Interaction on Spin Fluctuation Induced Superconductivity

We investigate the interplay of the electron-phonon and the spin fluctuation interaction for the superconducting state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$. The spin fluctuations are described within the nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid theory, whereas the phonons are treated using a shell model calculation of all phonon branches. The electron-phonon coupling is calculated using rigidly displaced ionic potentials screened by a background dielectric constant $ε_\infty$ and by holes within the CuO$_2$ planes. Taking into account both interactions we get a superconducting state with $d_{x^2-y^2}$-symmetry, whose origin are antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The investigation of all phonon modes of the system shows that the phononic contribution to the d-wave pairing interaction is attractive. This is a necessary prerequisite for a positive isotope effect. The size of the isotope exponent depends strongly on the relative strength of the electron-phonon and spin fluctuation coupling. Due to the strong electronic correlations no phononic induced superconducting state, which is always of s-wave character, is possible.

Nonradiative Electronic Deexcitation Time Scales in Metal Clusters

The life-times due to Auger-electron emission for a hole on a deep electronic shell of neutral and charged sodium clusters are studied for different sizes. We consider spherical clusters and calculate the Auger-transition probabilities using the energy levels and wave functions calculated in the Local-Density-Approximation (LDA). We obtain that Auger emission processes are energetically not allowed for neutral and positively charged sodium clusters. In general, the Auger probabilities in small Na$_N^-$ clusters are remarkably different from the atomic ones and exhibit a rich size dependence. The Auger decay times of most of the cluster sizes studied are orders of magnitude larger than in atoms and might be comparable with typical fragmentation times.

The origin of the 90 degree magneto-optical Kerr rotation in CeSb

We calculate the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation for CeSb in the near-infrared spectral range. Using an exact formula for large Kerr rotation angles and a simplified electronic structure of CeSb we find at \hbar ω= 0.46 eV a Kerr rotation of 90 degree which then for decreasing ωjumps to -90 degree as recently observed. We identify the general origin of possible 180 degree polarization rotations as resulting from mainly nonmagnetic optical properties, in particular from the ratio of the dominant interband resonance frequency to the plasma frequency. The dependence of the Kerr rotation on moments and magnetization is discussed.

Theory for the giant magneto-optical Kerr rotation in CeSb

We calculate the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle for CeSb in the near-infrared spectral range. Using an exact formula for large Kerr rotation angles and a simplified electronic structure of CeSb we find at $\hbar ω= 0.46 eV$ a Kerr rotation of 90 degrees which then for decreasing $ω$ jumps to -90 degrees in very good agreement with recent experimental observations. We identify the general origin of possible 90 degree polarization rotations from mainly optical properties and discuss its relation to the magnetic moments and magnetic dichroism of the material.

Angular Dependences of Third Harmonic Generation from Microdroplets

We present experimental and theoretical results for the angular dependence of third harmonic generation (THG) of water droplets in the micrometer range (size parameter $62<ka<248$). The THG signal in $p$- and $s$-polarization obtained with ultrashort laser pulses is compared with a recently developed nonlinear extension of classical Mie theory including multipoles of order $l\leq250$. Both theory and experiment yield over a wide range of size parameters remarkably stable intensity maxima close to the forward and backward direction at ``magic angles''. In contrast to linear Mie scattering, both are of comparable intensity.

High-T_c Superconductivity and Shadow State Formation in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+δ} and Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}

The normal and superconducting state of YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+δ} and Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} are investigated by using the mono- and bilayer Hubbard model within the fluctuation exchange approximation and a proper description of the Fermi surface topology. The inter- and intra-layer interactions, the renormalization of the bilayer splitting and the formation of shadow bands are investigated in detail. Although the shadow states are not visible in the monolayer, we find that the additional correlations in bilayers boost the shadow state intensity and will lead to their observability. In the superconducting state we find a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry of the order parameter and demonstrate the importance of inter-plane Copper pairing.

Symmetry Analysis of the Nonlinear Optical Response: New Magneto-Optical Effect in Second Harmonic Generation

Using symmetry arguments we show how optical second harmonic generation (SHG) can be used to detect antiferromagnetism at surfaces and in thin films. Based on the group theoretical analysis of the nonlinear electric susceptibility we propose a new nonlinear magneto-optical effect, which allows even in the presence of unit-cell doubling for the unambiguous discri- mination of antiferromagnetic spin configurations from ferro- or paramagnetic ones. As an example for this effect we discuss the polarization dependence of SHG from the fcc (001) surface of NiO in some detail.

Multiple-Scattering Theory of X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism: Implementation and Results for Iron K-edge

An implementation of the multiple-scattering approach to x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy is presented. The convergence problems due to the cluster size and the relativistic corrections are solved using an expansion of the Dirac Green function for complex energies up to the second order in 1/$c$. The Fermi energy is dealt with via a complex plane integration. Numerical methods used to obtain the semi-relativistic Green function in the whole complex plane are explained. We present a calculation of the magnetic circular dichroism at the K-edge of bcc-iron including the core hole effect. A good agreement is found at high energy. The physical origins of the XMCD spectrum near the edge and far from the edge are analyzed. The influence of the core hole, the possibility of a multiple-scattering expansion and the relation of XMCD with the spin-polarized density of states are discussed. A simple interpretation of XMCD at the K-edge is presented in terms of a rigid-band model.

Theory for Dynamical Short Range Order and Fermi Surface Volume in Strongly Correlated Systems

Using the fluctuation exchange approximation of the one band Hubbard model, we discuss the origin of the changing Fermi surface volume in underdoped cuprate systems due to the transfer of occupied states from the Fermi surface to its shadow, resulting from the strong dynamical antiferromagnetic short range correlations. The momentum and temperature dependence of the quasi particle scattering rate shows unusual deviations from the conventional Fermi liquid like behavior. Their consequences for the changing Fermi surface volume are discussed. Here, we investigate in detail which scattering processes might be responsible for a violation of the Luttinger theorem. Finally, we discuss the formation of hole pockets near half filling.

Theory for the Nonlinear Ultrafast Dynamics of Small Clusters after Ionization

The ultrafast relaxation of small clusters immediately after ionization is studied. For small Hg$_n$ clusters we determine the fragmentation-time distributions induced by ionization. A dramatic change of the fragmentation behaviour occurs when the temperature before ionization reaches the melting point of the neutral clusters. The ultrafast dynamics depends nonlinearly on initial conditions regarding atomic positions and velocities. The resultant largest Lyapunov exponent increases strongly upon ionization.

Electronic Theory for Bilayer-Effects in High-T_c Superconductors

The normal and the superconducting state of two coupled CuO_2 layers in the High-T_c superconductors are investigated by using the bilayer Hubbard model, the FLEX approximation on the real frequency axis and the Eliashberg theory. We find that the planes are antiferromagnetically correlated which leads to a strongly enhanced shadow band formation. Furthermore, the inter-layer hopping is renormalized which causes a blocking of the quasi particle inter-plane transfer for low doping concentrations. Finally, the superconducting order parameter is found to have a d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry with significant additional inter-layer contributions.
