Time-dependent Hartree-Fock plus Langevin approach for hot fusion reactions to synthesize the $Z=120$ superheavy element

We develop a novel approach to fusion reactions for syntheses of superheavy elements, which combines the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) method with a dynamical diffusion model based on the Langevin equation. In this approach, the distance of the closest approach for the capture process is estimated within the TDHF approach, which is then plugged into the dynamical diffusion model as an initial condition. We apply this approach to hot fusion reactions leading to formation of the element $Z=120$, that is, the $^{48}$Ca+$^{254,257}$Fm, $^{51}$V+$^{249}$Bk, and $^{54}$Cr+$^{248}$Cm reactions. Our calculations indicate that the distances of the closest approach for these systems are similar to each other and thus the difference in the probabilities of evaporation residue formation among those reaction systems originates mainly from the evaporation process, which is sensitive to the fission barrier height and the excitation energy of a compound nucleus.

Potential model for nuclear astrophysical fusion reactions with a square-well potential

The potential model for nuclear astrophysical reactions requires a considerably shallow nuclear potential when a square-well potential is employed to fit experimental data. We discuss the origin of this apparently different behavior from that obtained with a smooth Woods-Saxon potential, for which a deep potential is often employed. We argue that due to the sharp change of the potential at the boundary the radius parameter tends to be large in the square-well model, which results in a large absorption radius. The wave function then needs to be suppressed in the absorption region, which can eventually be achieved by using a shallow potential. We thus clarify the reason why the square-well potential has been able to reproduce a large amount of fusion data.

Fusion barrier distribution and superheavy elements

The barrier distribution, originated from channel coupling effects in heavy-ion fusion reactions, has been extracted experimentally for many systems using either a fusion excitation function or an excitation function of large-angle quasi-elastic scattering. In this article, we discuss an application of the latter method to the $^{48}$Ca+$^{248}$Cm system, which is relevant to hot fusion reactions to synthesize superheavy elements. To this end, we carry out coupled-channels calculations for this system, taking into account the deformation of the target nucleus, and discuss the role of deformation in a formation of evaporation residues.

Superheavy Elements: Beyond the 7th Period in the Periodic Table

What is the heaviest element? In order to address this question, the elements up to $Z=118$ have been synthesized by now by using heavy-ion fusion reactions. This has completed the 7th period in the periodic table of elements, and new attempts have been commenced in aiming at syntheses of the elements in the 8th period. In this article, we review the current status and future challenges in the research field of superheavy elements, putting some emphasis on perspectives from the nuclear reaction theory.

Relativistic Mean-Field and Beyond Approaches for Deformed Hypernuclei

We report the recent progress in relativistic mean-field (RMF) and beyond approaches for the low-energy structure of deformed hypernuclei. We show that the $Λ$ hyperon with orbital angular momentum $\ell=0$ (or $\ell>1$) generally reduces (enhances) nuclear quadrupole collectivity. The beyond mean-field studies of hypernuclear low-lying states demonstrate that there is generally a large configuration mixing between the two components $[^{A-1}Z (I^+) \otimes Λp_{1/2}]^J$ and $[^{A-1}Z (I\pm2 ^+) \otimes Λp_{3/2}]^J$ in the hypernuclear $1/2^-_1, 3/2^-_1$ states. The mixing weight increases as the collective correlation of nuclear core becomes stronger. Finally, we show how the energies of hypernuclear low-lying states are sensitive to parameters in the effective $N Λ$ interaction, the uncertainty of which has a large impact on the predicted maximal mass of neutron stars.

Branching ratios for deexcitation processes of daughter nuclei following invisible dinucleon decays in $^{16}$O

Various theories beyond the standard model of particle physics predict the existence of baryon number violating processes resulting in nucleon decay. When occurring within an atomic nucleus, such a decay will be followed by secondary decays of the daughter nucleus unless its ground state is directly populated. In this paper, we estimate branching ratios for processes associated with dinucleon decays of the $^{16}$O nucleus. To this end, we use a simple shell model for the ground state of $^{16}$O. For decays from the 1$s_{1/2}$ configuration, which result in highly excited states in the daughter nucleus, we employ a statistical model with the Hauser-Feshbach theory. Our analysis indicates that the branching ratio for gamma-ray emission in the energy range between 5 and 9 MeV, which is relevant to low-threshold water Cherenkov experiments such as SNO+, is 4.53%, 35.7%, and 20.2% for the $nn$, $pp$, and $pn$ decays in $^{16}$O, respectively. In particular, emission of 6.09 MeV and 7.01 MeV gamma-rays from $^{14}$C, and 6.45 MeV and 7.03 MeV gamma-rays from $^{14}$N, have branching ratios as large as 10.9%, 20.1%, 7.73% and 8.90%, respectively.

Disappearance of nuclear deformation in hypernuclei: a perspective from a beyond-mean-field study

The previous mean-field calculation [Myaing Thi Win and K. Hagino, Phys. Rev. C{\bf 78}, 054311 (2008)] has shown that the oblate deformation in $^{28,30,32}$Si disappears when a $Λ$ particle is added to these nuclei. We here investigate this phenomenon by taking into account the effects beyond the mean-field approximation. To this end, we employ the microscopic particle-rotor model based on the covariant density functional theory. We show that the deformation of $^{30}$Si does not completely disappear, even though it is somewhat reduced, after a $Λ$ particle is added if the beyond-mean-field effect is taken into account. We also discuss the impurity effect of $Λ$ particle on the electric quadrupole transition, and show that an addition of a $Λ$ particle leads to a reduction in the $B(E2)$ value, as a consequence of the reduction in the deformation parameter.

Role of hexadecapole deformation of projectile $^{28}$Si in heavy-ion fusion reactions near the Coulomb barrier

The vast knowledge of strong influence of quadrupole deformation $β_2$ of colliding nuclei on heavy-ion subbarrier fusion reactions inspires a desire to quest the sensitivity of fusion dynamics to higher order deformations, such as $β_4$ and $β_6$ deformations. However, such studies have rarely been carried out, especially for deformation of projectile nuclei. In this article, we investigated the role of $β_4$ of the projectile nucleus in fusion of the $^{28}$Si + $^{92}$Zr system. We demonstrated that the fusion barrier distribution is sensitive to the sign and the value of the $β_4$ parameter of the projectile, $^{28}$Si, and confirmed that the $^{28}$Si nucleus has a large positive $β_4$. This study opens an indirect way to estimate deformation parameters of radioactive nuclei using fusion reactions, which is otherwise difficult due to experimental constraints.

Coupled-channels analyses for $^{9,11}$Li + $^{208}$Pb fusion reactions with multi-neutron transfer couplings

We discuss the role of two-neutron transfer processes in the fusion reaction of the $^{9,11}$Li + $^{208}$Pb systems. We first analyze the $^{9}$Li + $^{208}$Pb reaction by taking into account the coupling to the $^{7}$Li + $^{210}$Pb channel. To this end, we assume that two neutrons are directly transferred to a single effective channel in $^{210}$Pb and solve the coupled-channels equations with the two channels. By adjusting the coupling strength and the effective $Q$-value, we successfully reproduce the experimental fusion cross sections for this system. We then analyze the $^{11}$Li + $^{208}$Pb reaction in a similar manner, that is, by taking into account three effective channels with $^{11}$Li + $^{208}$Pb, $^{9}$Li + $^{210}$Pb, and $^{7}$Li + $^{212}$Pb partitions. In order to take into account the halo structure of the $^{11}$Li nucleus, we construct the potential between $^{11}$Li and $^{208}$Pb with a double folding procedure, while we employ a Wood-Saxon type potential with the global Akyüz-Winther parameters for the other channels. Our calculation indicates that the multiple two-neutron transfer process plays a crucial role in the $^{11}$Li + $^{208}$Pb fusion reaction at energies around the Coulomb barrier.

Hot fusion reactions with deformed nuclei for synthesis of superheavy nuclei: an extension of the fusion-by-diffusion model

The fusion-by-diffusion model proposed by Swiatecki {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. C71, 014602 (2005)] has provided a simple and convenient tool to estimate evaporation residue cross sections for superheavy nuclei. I extend this model by taking into account deformation of the target nucleus, and discuss the role of orientation of deformed target in hot fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. To this end, I introduce an injection point for the diffusion process over an inner barrier which depends on the orientation angle. I apply this model to the $^{48}$Ca+$^{248}$Cm reaction and show that the maximum of evaporation residue cross section appears at an energy slightly above the height of the capture barrier for the side collision, for which the effective inner barrier is considerably lower than that for the tip collision, thus enhancing the diffusion probability. I also discuss the energy dependence of the injection point, and show that a large part of the energy dependence found in the previous analyses can be attributed to the deformation effect of a target nucleus.

Origin of a maximum of astrophysical $S$ factor in heavy-ion fusion reactions at deep subbarrier energies

The hindrance phenomenon of heavy-ion fusion cross sections at deep subbarrier energies often accompanies a maximum of an astrophysical $S$ factor at a threshold energy for fusion hindrance. We argue that this phenomenon can naturally be explained when the fusion excitation function is fitted with two potentials, with a larger (smaller) logarithmic slope at energies lower (higher) than the threshold energy. This analysis clearly suggests that the astrophysical $S$ factor provides a convenient tool to analyze the deep subbarrier hindrance phenomenon, even though the $S$ factor may have a strong energy dependence for heavy-ion systems unlike that for astrophysical reactions.

Beyond the neutron-drip line: two-neutron decay of unbound nuclei

We discuss a decay of unbound nuclei beyond the neutron drip-line using a three-body model with a core nucleus and two valence neutrons. We particularly discuss the role of dineutron correlation between the valence neutrons in the two-neutron emission from the ground state of $^{26}$O and $^{10}$He nuclei. Our calculations clearly indicate that the emission of the two neutrons in the back-to-back direction is enhanced due to the dineutron correlation.

Role of deformation in odd-even staggering in reaction cross sections for $^{30,31,32}$Ne and $^{36,37,38}$Mg isotopes

We discuss the role of pairing anti-halo effect in the observed odd-even staggering in reaction cross sections for $^{30,31,32}$Ne and $^{36,37,38}$Mg isotopes by taking into account the ground state deformation of these nuclei. To this end, we construct the ground state density for the $^{30,31}$Ne and $^{36,37}$Mg nuclei based on a deformed Woods-Saxon potential, while for the $^{32}$Ne and $^{38}$Mg nuclei we also take into account the pairing correlation using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method. We demonstrate that, when the one-neutron separation energy is small for the odd-mass nuclei, a significant odd-even staggering still appears even with finite deformation, although the degree of staggering is somewhat reduced compared to the spherical case. This implies that the pairing anti-halo effect in general plays an important role in generating the odd-even staggering in reaction cross sections for weakly bound nuclei.

New and efficient method for solving the eigenvalue problem for the two-center shell model with finite-depth potentials

We propose a new method to solve the eigen-value problem with a two-center single-particle potential. This method combines the usual matrix diagonalization with the method of separable representation of a two-center potential, that is, an expansion of the two-center potential with a finite basis set. To this end, we expand the potential on a harmonic oscillator basis, while single-particle wave functions on a combined basis with a harmonic oscillator and eigen-functions of a one-dimensional two-center potential. In order to demonstrate its efficiency, we apply this method to a system with two $^{16}$O nuclei, in which the potential is given as a sum of two Woods-Saxon potentials.

Evolving theoretical descriptions of heavy-ion fusion :from phenomenological to microscopic approaches

We overview the current status of theoretical approaches for heavy-ion fusion reactions at subbarrier energies. We particularly discuss theoretical challenges in the coupled-channels approach, that include i) a description of deep subbarrier hindrance of fusion cross sections, ii) the role of nuclear dissipation, iii) fusion of unstable nuclei, and iv) an interplay between fusion and multi-nucleon transfer processes. We also present results of a semi-microscopic approach to heavy-ion fusion reactions, that combines the coupled-channels approach with state-of-the-art microscopic nuclear structure calculations.

Transition from vibrational to rotational characters in low-lying states of hypernuclei

In order to clarify the nature of hypernuclear low-lying states, we carry out a comprehensive study for the structure of $^{144-154}_{~~~~~~~~Λ}$Sm-hypernuclei, which exhibit a transition from vibrational to rotational characters as the neutron number increases. To this end, we employ a microscopic particle-core coupling scheme based on a covariant density functional theory. We find that the positive-parity ground-state band in the hypernuclei shares a similar structure to that of the corresponding core nucleus. That is, regardless of whether the core nucleus is spherical or deformed, each hypernuclear state is dominated by the single configuration of the $Λ$ particle in the $s_{1/2}$ state ($Λs_{1/2}$) coupled to one core state of the ground band. In contrast, the low-lying negative-parity states mainly consist of $Λp_{1/2}$ and $Λp_{3/2}$ configurations coupled to plural nuclear core states. We show that, while the mixing amplitude between these configurations is negligibly small in spherical and weakly-deformed nuclei, it strongly increases as the core nucleus undergoes a transition to a well-deformed shape, being consistent with the Nilsson wave functions. We demonstrate that the structure of these negative-parity states with spin $I$ can be well understood based on the $LS$ coupling scheme, with the total orbital angular momentum of $L=[I\otimes 1]$ and the spin angular momentum of $S=1/2$.

Applicability of the Wong formula for fusion cross sections from light to heavy systems

We discuss the applicability of the Wong formula for fusion cross sections in a single-channel problem. To this end, we carry out a systematic study and compare the approximate fusion cross sections with the exact results in a wide mass region of reaction systems. We show that the deviation of the approximate results from the exact cross sections is large for light systems, even though the Wong formula provides a reasonable approximation for heavy systems. We also discuss the energy dependence of the deviation, and show that for a given projectile nucleus the critical energy, at which the deviation exceeds 5\% of the exact cross sections, increases as a function of the mass number of the target nucleus.

Quantum tunneling with friction

Using the phenomenological quantum friction models introduced by Caldirola-Kanai, Kostin, and Albrecht, we study quantum tunneling of a one-dimensional potential in the presence of energy dissipation. To this end, we calculate the tunneling probability using a time-dependent wave packet method. The friction reduces the tunneling probability. We show that the three models provide similar penetrabilities to each other, among which the Caldirola-Kanai model requires the least numerical effort. We also discuss the effect of energy dissipation on quantum tunneling in terms of barrier distributions.
