Coupled-channels description of the 40Ca+58,64Ni transfer and fusion reactions

Preliminary experimental data for nucleon transfer reactions of the 40Ca+58Ni and 40Ca+64Ni systems are analyzed with the coupled- channels approach. It is shown that a simple treatment for the transfer in the coupled-channels method cannot reproduce simultaneously the transfer probabilities and the sub-barrier enhancement of fusion cross sections.

New concept for pairing anti-halo effect as a localized wave packet of quasi-particle

The pairing anti-halo effect is a phenomenon that a pairing correlation suppresses a divergence of nuclear radius, which happens for single-particle states with orbital angular momenta of $l$ = 0 and 1 in the limit of vanishing binding energy. While this effect has mainly been discussed in terms of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory, we here use a three-body model and provide its new intuitive concept as a localized wave packet for a quasi-particle, that is, a coherent superposition of a weakly bound and continuum wave functions due to a pairing interaction. We show that the one-particle density in the three-body model can be directly expressed with such quasi-particle wave functions, which have a close analog to wave functions in the HFB approximation.

Anharmonicity of multi-octupole-phonon excitations in $^{208}$Pb: analysis with multi-reference covariant density functional theory and subbarrier fusion of $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb

We discuss anharmonicity of the multi-octupole-phonon states in $^{208}$Pb based on a covariant density functional theory, by fully taking into account the interplay between the quadrupole and the octupole degrees of freedom. Our results indicate the existence of a large anharmonicity in the transition strengths, even though the excitation energies are similar to those in the harmonic limit. We also show that the quadrupole-shape fluctuation significantly enhances the fragmentation of the two-octupole-phonon states in $^{208}$Pb. Using those transition strengths as inputs to coupled channels calculations, we then discuss the fusion reaction of $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier. We show that the anharmonicity of the octupole vibrational excitation considerably improves previous coupled-channels calculations in the harmonic oscillator limit, significantly reducing the height of the main peak in the fusion barrier distribution.

Investigating multi-channel quantum tunneling in heavy-ion fusion reactions with Bayesian spectral deconvolution

Excitations of colliding nuclei during a nuclear reaction considerably affect fusion cross sections at energies around the Coulomb barrier. It has been demonstrated that such channel coupling effects can be represented in terms of a distribution of multiple fusion barriers. We here apply a Bayesian approach to analyze the so called fusion barrier distributions. This method determines simultaneously the barrier parameters and the number of barriers. We particularly investigate the $^{16}$O+$^{144}$Sm and $^{16}$O+$^{154}$Sm systems in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. The present analysis indicates that the fusion barrier distribution for the former system is most consistent with three fusion barriers, even though the experimental data show only two distinct peaks.

Algebraic model for single-particle energies of $Λ$ hypernuclei

A model is proposed for the spectrum of $Λ$ hypernuclei based on the $u(3)\times u(2)$ Lie algebra, in which the internal degrees of freedom of the spin-1/2 $Λ$ particle are treated in the Fermionic $u(2)$ scheme, while the motion of the hyperon inside a nucleus is described in the Bosonic $u(3)$ harmonic oscillator scheme. Within this model, a simple formula for single-particle energies of the $Λ$ particle is obtained from the natural dynamical symmetry. The formula is applied to the experimental data on the reaction spectroscopy for the $^{89}_Λ$Y and $^{51}_Λ$V hypernuclei, providing a clear theoretical interpretation of the observed structures.

Decay dynamics of the unbound $^{25}$O and $^{26}$O nuclei

We study the ground and excited resonance states of $^{26}$O with a three-body model of $^{24}$O+n+n taking into account the coupling to the continuum. To this end, we use the new experimental data for the invariant mass spectroscopy of the unbound $^{25}$O and $^{26}$O nuclei, and present an update of three-body model calculations for the two-neutron decay of the $^{26}$O nucleus. With the new model inputs determined with the ground state decay of $^{26}$O, we discuss the di-neurtron correlations and a halo nature of this nucleus, as well as the structure of the excited states. For the energy of the 2$^+$ state, we achieve an excellent agreement with the experimental data with this calculation. We show that the 2$^+$ state consists predominantly of the $(d_{3/2})^2$ configuration, for which the pairing interaction between the valence neutrons slightly decreases its energy from the unperturbed one. We also discuss the structure of excited 0$^+$ states of the $^{26}$O nucleus. In particular, we show the existence of an excited 0$^+$ state at 3.38 MeV, which is mainly composed of the $(f_{7/2})^2$ configuration.

Evolution of fusion hindrance for asymmetric systems at deep sub barrier energies

Measurements of fusion cross-sections of 7Li and 12C with 198Pt at deep sub-barrier energies are reported to unravel the role of the entrance channel in the occurrence of fusion hindrance. The onset of fusion hindrance has been clearly observed in 12C + 198Pt system but not in 7Li + 198Pt system, within the measured energy range. Emergence of the hindrance, moving from lighter (6,7Li) to heavier (12C,16O) projectiles is explained employing a model that considers a gradual transition from a sudden to adiabatic regime at low energies. The model calculation reveals a weak effect of the damping of coupling to collective motion for the present systems as compared to that obtained for systems with heavier projectiles.

Low-energy hypernuclear spectra with microscopic particle-rotor model with relativistic point coupling hyperon-nucleon interaction

We extend the microscopic particle-rotor model for hypernuclear low-lying states by including the derivative and tensor coupling terms in the point-coupling nucleon-$Λ$ particle ($NΛ$) interaction. Taking $^{13}_{~Λ}$C as an example, we show that a good overall description for excitation spectra is achieved with four sets of effective $NΛ$ interaction. We find that the $Λ$ hyperon binding energy decreases monotonically with increasing the strengths of the high-order interaction terms. In particular, the tensor coupling term decreases the energy splitting between the first $1/2^-$ and $3/2^-$ states and increases the energy splitting between the first $3/2^+$ and $5/2^+$ states in $^{13}_{~Λ}$C.

Serendipitous discovery of an extended X-ray jet without a radio counterpart in a high-redshift quasar

A recent Chandra observation of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 585 has led to the discovery of an extended X-ray jet associated with the high-redshift background quasar B3 0727+409, a luminous radio source at redshift z=2.5. This is one of only few examples of high-redshift X-ray jets known to date. It has a clear extension of about 12", corresponding to a projected length of ~100 kpc, with a possible hot spot located 35" from the quasar. The archival high resolution VLA maps surprisingly reveal no extended jet emission, except for one knot about 1.4" from the quasar. The high X-ray to radio luminosity ratio for this source appears consistent with the $\propto (1+z)^{4}$ amplification expected from the inverse Compton radiative model. This serendipitous discovery may signal the existence of an entire population of similar systems with bright X-ray and faint radio jets at high redshift, a selection bias which must be accounted for when drawing any conclusions about the redshift evolution of jet properties and indeed about the cosmological evolution of supermassive black holes and active galactic nuclei in general.

Recent developments in heavy-ion fusion reactions around the Coulomb barrier

The nuclear fusion is a reaction to form a compound nucleus. It plays an important role in several circumstances in nuclear physics as well as in nuclear astrophysics, such as synthesis of superheavy elements and nucleosynthesis in stars. Here we discuss two recent theoretical developments in heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The first topic is a generalization of the Wong formula for fusion cross sections in a single-channel problem. By introducing an energy dependence to the barrier parameters, we show that the generalized formula leads to results practically indistinguishable from a full quantal calculation, even for light symmetric systems such as $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C, for which fusion cross sections show an oscillatory behavior. We then discuss a semi-microscopic modeling of heavy-ion fusion reactions, which combine the coupled-channels approach to the state-of-the-art nuclear structure calculations for low-lying collective motions. We apply this method to subbarrier fusion reactions of $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni and $^{40}$Ca+$^{58}$Ni systems, and discuss the role of anharmonicity of the low-lying vibrational motions.

Beyond-mean-field approach to low-lying spectra of $Λ$ hypernuclei

Taking the hypernucleus $^{13}_{~Λ}$C as an example, we illustrate the miscroscopic particle-rotor model for low-lying spectra of hypernuclei. This approach is based on the beyond-mean-field method, with the particle number and angular momentum projections. The quantum fluctuation of the mean-field is also taken into account for the core nucleus using the generator coordinate method. We show that the impurity effect of $Λ$ hyperon, such as a change in $B(E2)$, is well described with this model. Our calculation indicates that the most important impurity effect in $sd$-shell hypernuclei is a change in a deformation parameter rather than in a nuclear size.

Generator coordinate method for hypernuclear spectroscopy with a covariant density functional

We apply the generator coordinate method (GCM) to single-$Λ$ hypernuclei in order to discuss the spectra of hypernuclear low-lying states. To this end, we use the same relativistic point-coupling energy functional both for the mean-field and the beyond-mean-field calculations. This relativistic GCM approach provides a unified description of low-lying states in ordinary nuclei and in hypernuclei, and is thus suitable for studying the $Λ$ impurity effect. We carry out an illustrative calculation for the low-lying spectrum of $^{21}_Λ$Ne, in which the interplay between the hypernuclear collective excitations and the single-particle excitations of the unpaired $Λ$ hyperon is taken into account in a full microscopic manner.

Enhancement factor for two-neutron transfer reactions with a schematic coupled-channels model

Probabilities for two-neutron transfer reactions, $P_{\rm 2n}$, are often discussed in comparison with the square of the corresponding probabilities for one-neutron transfer process, $(P_{\rm 1n})^2$, implicitly assuming that $(P_{\rm 1n})^2$ provides the probability of two-neutron transfer reactions in the absence of the pairing correlation. We use a schematic coupled-channels model, in which the transfers are treated as effective inelastic channels, and demonstrate that this model leads to $P_{\rm 2n}=(P_{\rm 1n})^2/4$, rather than $P_{\rm 2n}=(P_{\rm 1n})^2$, in the pure sequential limit. We argue that a simple model with spin-up and spin-down neutrons in a single-particle orbital also leads to the same conclusion.

Influence of vibrational excitation on surface diffuseness of inter-nuclear potential: study through heavy-ion quasi-elastic scattering at deep subbarrier energies

We discuss the role of channel coupling in the surface properties of an inter-nuclear potential for heavy-ion reactions. To this end, we analyze the experimental quasi-elastic cross sections for the $^{12}$C + $^{105,106}$Pd and $^{13}$C + $^{105,106}$Pd systems using the coupled-channels approach by including the vibrational excitations in the target nuclei. While earlier studies have reported a negligible influence of vibrational excitation on the surface diffuseness parameter for spherical systems, we find a significant effect for the C+Pd systems. Our systematic study also reveals influence of transfer couplings on the surface diffuseness parameter.

Are there good probes for the di-neutron correlation in light neutron-rich nuclei?

The di-neutron correlation is a spatial correlation with which two valence neutrons are located at a similar position inside a nucleus. We discuss possible experimental probes for the di-neutron correlation. This includes the Coulomb breakup and the pair transfer reactions of neutron-rich nuclei, and the direct two-neutron decays of nuclei beyond the neutron drip-line.

Present status of coupled-channels calculations for heavy-ion subbarrier fusion reactions

The coupled-channels method has been a standard tool in analyzing heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. We investigate three simplifications usually adopted in the coupled-channels calculations. These are i) the exclusion of non-collective excitations, ii) the assumption of coordinate independent coupling strengths, and iii) the harmonic oscillator approximation for multi-phonon excitations. In connection to the last point, we propose a novel microscopic method based on the beyond-mean-field approach in order to take into account the anharmonic effects of collective vibrations.

Microscopic study of low-lying spectra of $Λ$ hypernuclei based on a beyond-mean-field approach with covariant energy density functional

We present a detailed formalism of the microscopic particle-rotor model for hypernuclear low-lying states based on a covariant density functional theory. In this method, the hypernuclear states are constructed by coupling a hyperon to low-lying states of the core nucleus, which are described by the generator coordinate method (GCM) with the particle number and angular momentum projections. We apply this method to study in detail the low-lying spectrum of $^{13}_{~Λ}$C and $^{21}_{~Λ}$Ne hypernuclei. We also briefly discuss the structure of $^{155}_{~~Λ}$Sm as an example of heavy deformed hypernuclei. It is shown that the low-lying excitation spectrum with positive parity states of the hypernuclei, which are dominated by $Λ$ hyperon in $s$-orbital coupled to the core states, are similar to that for the corresponding core states, while the electric quadrupole transition strength, $B(E2)$, from the 2$^+_1$ state to the ground state is reduced according to the mass number of the hypernuclei. Our study indicates that the energy splitting between the first 1/2$^-$ and 3/2$^-$ hypernuclear states is generally small for all the hypernuclei which we study. However, their configurations depend much on the properties of a core nucleus, in particular on the sign of deformation parameter. That is, the first $1/2^-$ and $3/2^-$ states in $^{13}_{~Λ}$C are dominated by a single configuration with $Λ$ particle in the $p$-wave orbits and thus providing good candidates for a study of the $Λ$ spin-orbit splitting. On the other hand, those states in the other hypernuclei exhibit a large configuration mixing and thus their energy difference cannot be interpreted as the spin-orbit splitting for the $p$-orbits.

Semi-microscopic modeling of heavy-ion fusion reactions with multi-reference covariant density functional theory

We describe low-lying collective excitations of atomic nuclei with the multi-reference covariant density functional theory, and combine them with coupled-channels calculations for heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. To this end, we use the calculated transition strengths among several collective states as inputs to the coupled-channels calculations. This approach provides a natural way to describe anharmonic multi-phonon excitations as well as a deviation of rotational excitations from a simple rigid rotor. We apply this method to subbarrier fusion reactions of $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni, $^{58}$Ni+$^{60}$Ni and $^{40}$Ca+$^{58}$Ni systems. We find that the effect of anharmonicity tends to smear the fusion barrier distributions, better reproducing the experimental data compared to the calculations in the harmonic oscillator limit.
