On the Wong cross section and fusion oscillations

We re-examine the well-known Wong formula for heavy-ion fusion cross sections. Although this celebrated formula yields almost exact results for single-channel calculations for relatively heavy systems such as $^{16}$O+$^{144}$Sm, it tends to overestimate the cross section for light systems such as $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C. We generalise the formula to take account of the energy dependence of the barrier parameters and show that the energy-dependent version gives results practically indistinguishable from a full quantal calculation. We then examine the deviations arising from the discrete nature of the intervening angular momenta, whose effect can lead to an oscillatory contribution to the excitation function. We recall some compact, analytic expressions for these oscillations, and highlight the important physical parameters that give rise to them. Oscillations in symmetric systems are discussed, as are systems where the target and projectile identities can be exchanged via a strong transfer channel.

On the Merging Cluster Abell 578 and Its Central Radio Galaxy 4C +67.13

Here we analyze radio, optical, and X-ray data for a peculiar cluster Abell 578. This cluster is not fully relaxed and consists of two merging sub-systems. The brightest cluster galaxy, CGPG 0719.8+6704, is a pair of interacting ellipticals with projected separation $\sim$10 kpc, the brighter of which hosts the radio source 4C +67.13. The Fanaroff-Riley type-II radio morphology of 4C +67.13 is unusual for central radio galaxies in local Abell clusters. Our new optical spectroscopy revealed that both nuclei of the CGPG 0719.8+6704 pair are active, albeit at low accretion rates corresponding to the Eddington ratio $\sim10^{-4}$ (for the estimated black hole masses of $\sim 3 \times 10^8\,M_\odot$ and $\sim 10^9 \, M_\odot$). The gathered X-ray ({\it Chandra}) data allowed us to confirm and to quantify robustly the previously noted elongation of the gaseous atmosphere in the dominant sub-cluster, as well as a large spatial offset ($\sim 60$\,kpc projected) between the position of the brightest cluster galaxy and the cluster center inferred from the modeling of the X-ray surface brightness distribution. Detailed analysis of the brightness profiles and temperature revealed also that the cluster gas in the vicinity of 4C\,+67.13 is compressed (by a factor of about $\sim 1.4$) and heated (from $\simeq 2.0$\,keV up to 2.7\,keV), consistent with the presence of a weak shock (Mach number $\sim 1.3$) driven by the expanding jet cocoon. This would then require the jet kinetic power of the order of $\sim 10^{45}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$, implying either a very high efficiency of the jet production for the current accretion rate, or a highly modulated jet/accretion activity in the system.

Triaxially deformed relativistic point-coupling model for $Λ$ hypernuclei: a quantitative analysis of hyperon impurity effect on nuclear collective properties

The impurity effect of hyperon on atomic nuclei has received a renewed interest in nuclear physics since the first experimental observation of appreciable reduction of $E2$ transition strength in low-lying states of hypernucleus $^{7}_Λ$Li. Many more data on low-lying states of $Λ$ hypernuclei will be measured soon for $sd$-shell nuclei, providing good opportunities to study the $Λ$ impurity effect on nuclear low-energy excitations. We carry out a quantitative analysis of $Λ$ hyperon impurity effect on the low-lying states of $sd$-shell nuclei at the beyond-mean-field level based on a relativistic point-coupling energy density functional (EDF), considering that the $Λ$ hyperon is injected into the lowest positive-parity ($Λ_s$) and negative-parity ($Λ_p$) states. We adopt a triaxially deformed relativistic mean-field (RMF) approach for hypernuclei and calculate the $Λ$ binding energies of hypernuclei as well as the potential energy surfaces (PESs) in $(β, γ)$ deformation plane. We also calculate the PESs for the $Λ$ hypernuclei with good quantum numbers using a microscopic particle rotor model (PRM) with the same relativistic EDF. The triaxially deformed RMF approach is further applied in order to determine the parameters of a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) for the collective excitations of triaxially deformed core nuclei. Taking $^{25,27}_Λ$Mg and $^{31}_Λ$Si as examples, we analyse the impurity effects of $Λ_s$ and $Λ_p$ on the low-lying states of the core nuclei...

Systematic study of nuclear matrix elements in neutrinoless double-beta decay with a beyond mean-field covariant density functional theory

We report a systematic study of nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) in neutrinoless double-beta decays with a state-of-the-art beyond mean-field covariant density functional theory. The dynamic effects of particle-number and angular-momentum conservations as well as quadrupole shape fluctuations are taken into account with projections and generator coordinate method for both initial and final nuclei. The full relativistic transition operator is adopted to calculate the NMEs. The present systematic studies show that in most of the cases there is a much better agreement with the previous non-relativistic calculation based on the Gogny force than in the case of the nucleus $^{150}$Nd found in Song et al. [Phys. Rev. C 90, 054309 (2014)]. In particular, we find that the total NMEs can be well approximated by the pure axial-vector coupling term with a considerable reduction of the computational effort.

ASTRO-H White Paper - AGN Winds

In this white paper we describe the prospects for ASTRO-H for the study of outflows from active galactic nuclei. The most important breakthroughs in this field are expected to arise from the high spectral resolution and sensitivity in the Fe-K band, combined with broad-band sensitivity over the full X-ray band and spectral capabilities also at lower energies. The sensitivity in the Fe-K region allows to extend the absorption measure distribution of the outflow out to the highest ionisation states accessible, where observations with current X-ray missions indicate that most of the outflowing gas is to be found. Due to the high-resolution and sensitivity it will also be able to give the definitive proof for the existence of ultra-fast outflows, and if so, characterise their physical properties in great detail. These ultra-fast outflows carry very large amounts of energy and momentum, and are of fundamental importance for feedback studies. We show how the ASTRO-H observations in general can help to constrain numerical models for outflows. The link to reflection and emission processes is also discussed, as well as the possible relation between outflows and relativistic emission lines. Finally, we discuss the prospects for other related categories of objects like BAL quasars, partially covered sources and Compton thick outflows.

ASTRO-H White Paper - Broad-band Spectroscopy and Polarimetry

The broad energy range spanned by ASTRO-H instruments, from ~0.3 to 600 keV, with its high spectral resolution calorimeter and sensitive hard X-ray imaging, offers unique opportunities to study black holes and their environments. The ability to measure polarization is particularly novel, with potential sources including blazars, Galactic pulsars and X-ray binaries. In this White Paper, we present an overview of the synergistic instrumental capabilities and the improvements over prior missions. We also show how ASTRO-H fits into the multi-wavelength landscape. We present in more detail examples and simulations of key science ASTRO-H can achieve in a typical 100 ksec observation when data from all four instruments are combined. Specifically, we consider observations of black-hole source (Cyg X-1 and GRS 1915+105), blazars (Mrk 421 and Mrk 501), a quasar (3C 273), radio galaxies (Centaurus A and 3C 120), and active galaxies with a strong starburst (Circinus and NGC 4945). We will also address possible new discoveries expected from ASTRO-H.

Three-dimensional mesh calculations for covariant density functional theory

In contrast to the non-relativistic approaches, three-dimensional (3D) mesh calculations for the {\it relativistic} density functional theory have not been realized because of the challenges of variational collapse and fermion doubling. We overcome these difficulties by developing a novel method based on the ideas of Wilson fermion as well as the variational principle for the inverse Hamiltonian. We demonstrate the applicability of this method by applying it to $^{16}$O, $^{24}$Mg, and $^{28}$Si nuclei, providing detailed explanation on the formalism and verification of numerical implementation.

Structure of hypernuclei in relativistic approaches

We review the relativistic mean-field approach to various aspects of hypernuclei. It was Brockmann and Weise who first applied this approach to hypernuclei. At that time, it had been already observed experimentally that the spin-orbit splittings in hypernuclei are significantly smaller than that in ordinary nuclei. The relativistic approach was suitable for a discussion of spin-orbit splittings in hypernuclei, as the spin-orbit interaction is naturally emerged with the relativistic framework. Since this seminal work, many developments have been done and the relativistic approach has been applied both to the ground state and to excited states of hypernuclei. We summarize those developments in the Chapter. We shall concentrate on $Λ$-hypernuclei and do not discuss $Σ$ hypernuclei, since the theoretical treatment is rather similar to each other.

Two-nucleon Correlations in the Decay of Unbound Nuclei beyond the Drip Lines

We discuss the two-neutron emission decay of $^{26}$O nucleus from a viewpoint of dineutron correlations between the valence neutrons. We first discuss how the dineutron correlation is realized both in the coordinate space and in the momentum space by employing a three-body model. We then discuss the decay energy spectrum as well as the angular distribution of emitted neutrons. We show that an emission of two neutrons in back-to-back directions is enhanced, which we interpret as a clear manifestation of the dineutron correlation between the valence neutrons.

Subbarrier fusion of carbon isotopes: from resonance structure to fusion oscillations

At energies below the Coulomb barrier, the fusion excitation function for the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C system shows prominent fine structures, whereas that for the $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C system behaves more smoothly as a function of energy. We demonstrate that these different behaviors can be simultaneously reproduced using an optical potential in which the strength of the imaginary part is proportional to the level density of each compound nucleus. We also discuss the oscillatory behavior of fusion excitation function for these systems observed at energies above the Coulomb barrier from a view point of quantum mechanical systems with identical particles.

On the Interaction of the PKS B1358-113 Radio Galaxy with the Abell 1836 Cluster

[abridged] Here we present the analysis of multifrequency data gathered for the FRII radio galaxy PKS B1358-113, hosted in the brightest cluster galaxy of Abell 1836. The galaxy harbors one of the most massive black holes known to date and our analysis of the optical data reveals that this black hole is only weakly active. Based on new Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations and archival radio data we derive the preferred range for the jet kinetic luminosity $\sim (0.5-3) \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This is above the values implied by various scaling relations proposed for radio sources in galaxy clusters, being instead very close to the maximum jet power allowed for the given accretion rate. We constrain the radio source lifetime as $\sim 40-70$ Myrs, and the total amount of deposited jet energy $\sim (2-8) \times 10^{60}$\,ergs. The detailed analysis of the X-ray data provides indication for the presence of a bow-shock driven by the expanding radio lobes into the Abell 1836 cluster environment, with the corresponding Mach number $\sim 2-4$. This, together with the recently growing evidence that powerful FRII radio galaxies may not be uncommon in the centers of clusters at higher redshifts, supports the idea that jet-induced shock heating may indeed play an important role in shaping the properties of clusters, galaxy groups, and galaxies in formation. We speculate on a possible bias against detecting jet-driven shocks in poorer environments, resulting from an inefficient electron heating at the shock front, combined with a relatively long electron-ion equilibration timescale.

Three-body model calculation of the 2$^+$ state in $^{26}$O

We discuss the energy of the excited 2$^+$ state in the unbound nucleus $^{26}$O using the three-body model of $^{24}$O+$n$+$n$. This model fully takes into account the continuum effects as well as the dineutron correlation of the valence neutrons. The present calculation yields the energy of 1.354 MeV, which is slightly smaller than the unperturbed energy, 1.54 MeV. The energy shifts for the ground and the 2$^+$ states with respect to the unperturbed energy suggest that 0$^+$ and the 2$^+$ states in $^{26}$O show a typical spectrum well described by a short-range pairing interaction acting on two valence nucleons in the same orbit.

Microscopic particle-rotor model for low-lying spectrum of Lambda hypernuclei

We propose a novel method for low-lying states of hypernuclei based on the particle-rotor model, in which hypernuclear states are constructed by coupling the hyperon to low-lying states of the core nucleus. In contrast to the conventional particle-rotor model, we employ a microscopic approach for the core states, that is, the generator coordinate method (GCM) with the particle number and angular momentum projections. We apply this microscopic particle-rotor model to $^9_Λ$Be employing a point-coupling version of the relativistic mean-field Lagrangian. A reasonable agreement with the experimental data for the low-spin spectrum is achieved using the $ΛN$ coupling strengths determined to reproduce the binding energy of the $Λ$ particle.

A microscopic benchmark-study of triaxiality in low-lying states of 76Kr

We report on a seven-dimensional generator coordinate calculation in the two deformation parameters $β$ and $γ$ together with projection on three-dimensional angular momentum and two particle numbers for the low-lying states in $^{76}$Kr. These calculations are based on covariant density functional theory. Excellent agreement is found with the data for the spectrum and the electric multipole transition strengths. This answers the important question of dynamic correlations and triaxiality in a fully microscopic way. We find that triaxial configurations dominate both the ground state and the quasi $γ$-band. This yields a different picture from the simple interpretation in terms of "coexistence of a prolate ground state with an oblate low-lying excited state", which is based on the measured sign of spectroscopic quadrupole moments. This study also provides for the first time a benchmark for the collective Hamiltonian in five dimensions. Moreover, we point out that the staggering phase of the $γ$-band is not a safe signature for rigid triaxiality of the low-energy structure.

Mapping from quasi-elastic scattering to fusion reactions

The fusion barrier distribution has provided a nice representation for the channel coupling effects on heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Here we discuss how one can extract the same representation using the so called sum-of-differences (SOD) method with quasi-elastic scattering cross sections. In contrast to the conventional quasi-elastic barrier distribution, the SOD barrier distribution has an advantage in that it can be applied both to non-symmetric and symmetric systems. It is also the case that the correspondence to the fusion barrier distribution is much better than the quasi-elastic barrier distribution. We demonstrate its usefulness by studying $^{16}$O+$^{144}$Sm, $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni, and $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C systems.

Quasi-elastic scattering in the 20Ne + 90,92Zr reactions: role of non-collective excitations

Conventional coupled-channels analyses, that take account of only the collective excitations of the colliding nuclei, have failed to reproduce the different behavior of the experimental quasi-elastic barrier distributions for the $^{20}$Ne + $^{90,92}$Zr systems. To clarify the origins of this difference, we investigate the effect of non-collective excitations of the Zr isotopes. Describing these excitations in a random-matrix model, we explicitly take them into account in our coupled-channels calculations. The non-collective excitations are capable of reproducing the observed smearing of the peak structure in the barrier distribution for $^{20}$Ne + $^{92}$Zr, while not significantly altering the structure observed in the $^{20}$Ne + $^{90}$Zr system. The difference is essentially related to the closed neutron shell in $^{90}$Zr.

Three-body model calculations for N=Z odd-odd nuclei with T=0 and T=1 pairing correlations

We study the interplay between the isoscalar (T=0) and isovector (T=1) pairing correlations in N=Z odd-odd nuclei from 14N to 58Cu by using three-body model calculations. The strong spin-triplet T=0 pairing correlation dominates in the ground state of 14N, 18F, 30P, and 58Cu with the spin-parity J^π=1+, which can be well reproduced by the present calculations. The magnetic dipole and Gamow-Teller transitions are found to be strong in 18F and 42Sc as a manifestation of SU(4) symmetry in the spin-isospin space. We also discuss the spin-quadrupole transitions in these nuclei.

Reaction cross sections of hypernuclei and the shrinkage effect

We calculate the reaction cross sections for $^6{\rm Li}$ and $^7_Λ{\rm Li}$ on a $^{12}{\rm C}$ target at $100\,{\rm MeV/nucleon}$ using the Glauber theory. To this end, we assume a two-body cluster structure for $^6$Li and $^7_Λ{\rm Li}$, and employ the few-body treatment of the Glauber theory, that is beyond the well known optical limit approximation. We show that the reaction cross section for $^7_Λ{\rm Li}$ is smaller than that for $^6$Li by about 4\%, reflecting the shrinkage effect of the $Λ$ particle.
