Plasmon excitations and 1D - 2D dimensional crossover in quantum crossbars

Spectrum of boson fields and two-point correlators are analyzed in quantum crossbars (QCBs, a superlattice formed by m crossed interacting arrays of quantum wires), with short range inter-wire capacitive interaction. Spectral and correlation properties of double (m=2) and triple (m-3) QCBs are studied. It is shown that the standard bosonization procedure is valid, and the system behaves as a sliding Luttinger liquid in the infrared limit, but the high frequency spectral and correlation characteristics have either 1D or 2D nature depending on the direction of the wave vector in the 2D elementary cell of reciprocal lattice. As a result, the crossover from 1D to 2D regime may be experimentally observed. It manifests itself as appearance of additional peaks of optical absorption, non-zero transverse space correlators and periodic energy transfer between arrays ("Rabi oscillations").

On the nature of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors: GaAs:Mn, GaP:Mn

A microscopic Hamiltonian for interacting manganese impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is derived. It is shown that in p -type III-V DMS the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile holes and localized states near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied oxygen orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. The Curie temperature estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with recent experiments on GaAs:Mn. The model is also applicable to the GaP:Mn system.

Electric Field Induced Kondo Tunneling Through Double Quantum Dot

It is shown that the resonance Kondo tunneling through a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation and singlet ground state may arise at a strong bias, which compensates the energy of singlet/triplet excitation. Using the renormalization group technique we derive scaling equations and calculate the differential conductance as a function of an auxiliary dc-bias for parallel DQD.

Dimensional Crossover in 2D Crossbars

Spectrum of boson fields and two-point correlators are analyzed in quantum crossbars (QCB, a superlattice formed by two crossed interacting arrays of quantum wires), with short range inter-wire interaction. It is shown that the standard bosonization procedure is valid, and the system behaves as a sliding Luttinger liquid in the infrared limit, but the high frequency spectral and correlation characteristics have either 1D or 2D nature depending on the direction of the wave vector in the 2D Brillouin zone. As a result, the crossover from 1D to 2D regime may be experimentally observed. Plasmon propagation in arbitrary direction is possible. Periodic energy transfer between arrays ("Rabi oscillations") is predicted.

Electronic properties of quantum bars

Spectrum of boson fields and two-point correlators are analyzed in a quantum bar system (a superlattice formed by two crossed interacting arrays of quantum wires), with short range interwire interaction. The standard bosonization procedure is shown to be valid, within the two wave approximation. The system behaves as a sliding Luttinger liquid in the vicinity of the Gamma point, but its spectral and correlation characteristics have either 1D or 2D nature depending on the direction of the wave vector in the rest of the Brillouin zone. Due to interwire interaction, unperturbed states, propagating along the two arrays of wires, are always mixed, and the transverse components of the correlation functions do not vanish. This mixing is especially strong around the diagonal of the Brillouin zome, when tranverse correlators have the same order of magnitude as the longitudinal ones.

Localized states in 2D semiconductors doped with magnetic impurities in quantizing magnetic field

A theory of magnetic impurities in a 2D electron gas quantized by a strong magnetic field is formulated in terms of Friedel-Anderson theory of resonance impurity scattering. It is shown that this scattering results in an appearance of bound Landau states with zero angular moment between the Landau subbands. The resonance scattering is spin selective, and it results in a strong spin polarization of Landau states, as well as in a noticeable magnetic field dependence of the $g$ factor and the crystal field splitting of the impurity $d$ levels.

Ginzburg-Landau functional for nearly antiferromagnetic perfect and disordered Kondo lattices

Interplay between Kondo effect and trends to antiferromagnetic and spin glass ordering in perfect and disordered bipartite Kondo lattices is considered. Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived from the microscopic effective action written in three mode representation (Kondo screening, antiferromagnetic correlations and spin liquid correlations). The problem of local constraint is resolved by means of Popov-Fedotov representation for localized spin operators. It is shown that the Kondo screening enhances the trend to a spin liquid crossover and suppresses antiferromagnetic ordering in perfect Kondo lattices and spin glass ordering in doped Kondo lattices. The modified Doniach's diagram is constructed, and possibilities of going beyond the mean field approximation are discussed.

Bound spin-excitons in two-dimensional electron gas

A theory of the spin exciton capture by a magnetic impurity in a 2D electron gas is developed. We consider the resonance model for electron scattering by a transition metal impurity and calculate the binding potential for spin excitons. This potential is spin selective and is capable of binding a spin exciton with zero angular momentum. In order to trap an exciton with a nonzero angular momentum m, the potential must exceed a certain threshold value, depending on m.

Kondo effect in optics of quantum dots

Anderson impurity model for semiconductor quantum dot is extended to take into account both particle and hole branches of charge excitations. It is shown that in dots with even number of electrons where the Kondo effect is absent in the ground state, novel midgap excitonic states emerge in the energy spectrum due to Kondo-type shake-up processes. The relevance of the model to rare earth ions adsorbed on metallic surfaces is discussed.

Quantum dots with even number of electrons: Kondo effect in a finite magnetic field

We study a small spin-degenerate quantum dot with even number of electrons, weakly connected by point contacts to the metallic electrodes, and subject to an external magnetic field. If the Zeeman energy B is equal to the single-particle level spacing $Δ$ in the dot, the ground state of the dot becomes doubly degenerate, and the system exhibits Kondo effect, despite the fact that B exceeds by far the Kondo temperature $T_{K}$. A possible realization of this in tunneling experiments is discussed.

Cotunneling through quantum dot with even number of electrons

We study an influence of a finite magnetic field on a small spin-degenerate quantum dot with even number of electrons, attached to metallic leads. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the low energy physics of the system can be described by the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Kondo model.
