Modeling the morphogenesis of brine channels in sea ice

Brine channels are formed in sea ice under certain constraints and represent a habitat of different microorganisms. The complex system depends on a number of various quantities as salinity, density, pH-value or temperature. Each quantity governs the process of brine channel formation. There exists a strong link between bulk salinity and the presence of brine drainage channels in growing ice with respect to both the horizontal and vertical planes. We develop a suitable phenomenological model for the formation of brine channels both referring to the Ginzburg-Landau-theory of phase transitions as well as to the chemical basis of morphogenesis according to Turing. It is possible to conclude from the critical wavenumber on the size of the structure and the critical parameters. The theoretically deduced transition rates have the same magnitude as the experimental values. The model creates channels of similar size as observed experimentally. An extension of the model towards channels with different sizes is possible. The microstructure of ice determines the albedo feedback and plays therefore an important role for large-scale global circulation models (GCMs).

Impossibility to describe repulsion with contact interaction

Contact interactions always lead to attractive behaviour. Arguments are presented to show why a repulsive interacting system, e.g. Bose gases, cannot be described by contact interactions and corresponding treatments are possibly obscured by the appearance of bound states. The usually used cut-offs are identified as finite range parameters.

Electronic transport properties through thiophenes on switchable domains

The electronic transport of electrons and holes through stacks of $α$,$\ome ga$-dicyano-$β$,$β$'-dibutyl- quaterthiophene (DCNDBQT) as part of a nov el organic ferroic field-effect transistor (OFFET) is investigated. The novel ap plication of a ferroelectric instead of a dielectric substrate provides the poss ibility to switch bit-wise the ferroelectric domains and to employ the polarizat ion of these domains as a gate field in an organic semiconductor. A device conta ining very thin DCNDBQT films of around 20 nm thickness is intended to be suitab le for logical as well as optical applications. We investigate the device proper ties with the help of a phenomenological model called multilayer organic light-e mitting diodes (MOLED), which was extended to transverse fields. The results sho wed, that space charge and image charge effects play a crucial role in these org anic devices.

Multiple condensed phases in attractively interacting Bose systems

We investigate a Bose gas with finite-range interaction using a scheme to eliminate unphysical processes in the T-matrix approximation. In this way the corrected T-matrix becomes suitable to calculate properties below the critical temperature. For attractive interaction, an Evans-Rashid transition occurs between a quasi-ideal Bose gas and a BCS-like phase with a gaped dispersion. The gap decreases with increasing density and vanishes at a critical density where the single-particle dispersion becomes linear for small momenta indicating Bose-Einstein condensation. The investigation of the pressure shows however, that the mentioned quantum phase transitions might be inaccessible due to a preceding first order transition.

Phase diagram and binding energy of interacting Bose gases

From the many-body T-matrix the condition for a medium-dependent bound state and its binding energy is derived for a homogeneous interacting Bose gas. This condition provides the critical line in the phase diagram in terms of the medium-dependent scattering length. Separating the Bose pole from the distribution function the influence of a Bose condensate is discussed and a thermal minimum of the critical scattering length is found.

Surface energy and magneto-capacitance of superconductors under electric field bias

A superconducting layer exposed to a perpendicular electric field and a parallel magnetic field is considered within the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approach. The GL equation is solved near the surface and the surface energy is calculated. The nucleation critical field of superconducting state at the surface depends on the magnetic and electric fields. Special consideration is paid to the induced magnetic-field effect cause d by diamagnetic surface currents. The latter effect is strongly dependent on the thickness of the sample. The effective inverse capacitance determines the effective penetration depth. It is found that the capacitance exhibits a jump at the surface critical field. An experiment is suggested for determining the change in the effective capacitance of the layer.

Current without bias and diode effect in shuttling transport of nanoshafts

A row of parallely ordered and coupled molecular nanoshafts is shown to develop a shuttling transport of charges at finite temperature. The appearance of a cu rrent without applying an external bias voltage is reported as well as a natura l diode effect allowing unidirectional charge transport along one field directi on while blocking the opposite direction. The zero-bias voltage current appears above a threshold of initial thermal and/or dislocation energy.

Discontinuity of capacitance at the onset of surface superconductivity

The effect of the magnetic field on a capacitor with a superconducting electrode is studied within the Ginzburg-Landau approach. It is shown that the capacitance has a discontinuity at the onset of the surface superconductivity $B_{\rm c3}$ which is expressed as a discontinuity in the penetration depth of the electric field into metals. Estimates show that this discontinuity is observable with recent bridges for both conventional and high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors of the type-II.

The chemical potential for the inhomogeneous electron liquid in terms of its kinetic and potential parts with special consideration of the surface pote ntial step and BCS-BEC crossover

The chemical potential $μ$ of a many-body system is valuable since it carries fingerprints of phase changes. Here, we summarize results for $μ$ for a thre e-dimensional electron liquid in terms of average kinetic and potential energie s per particle. The difference between $μ$ and the energy per particle is fou nd to be exactly the electrostatic potential step at the surface. We also prese nt calculations for an integrable one-dimensional many-body system with delta f unction interactions, exhibiting a BCS-BEC crossover. It is shown that in the B CS regime the chemical potential can be expressed solely in terms of the ground -state energy per particle. A brief discussion is also included of the strong c oupling BEC limit.

Phase diagram for interacting Bose gases

We propose a new form of the inversion method in terms of a selfenergy expansion to access the phase diagram of the Bose-Einstein transition. The dependence of the critical temperature on the interaction parameter is calculated. This is discussed with the help of a new condition for Bose-Einstein condensation in interacting systems which follows from the pole of the T-matrix in the same way as from the divergence of the medium-dependent scattering length. A many-body approximation consisting of screened ladder diagrams is proposed which describes the Monte Carlo data more appropriately. The specific results are that a non-selfconsistent T-matrix leads to a linear coefficient in leading order of 4.7, the screened ladder approximation to 2.3, and the selfconsistent T-matrix due to the effective mass to a coefficient of 1.3 close to the Monte Carlo data.

Reduction of surface coverage of finite systems due to geometrical steps

The coverage of vicinal, stepped surfaces with molecules is simulated with the help of a two-dimensional Ising model including local distortions and an Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier term at the steps. An effective two-spin model is capable to describe the main properties of this distorted Ising model. It is employed to analyze the behavior of the system close to the critical points. Within a well-defined regime of bonding strengths and Ehrlich-Schwoebel barriers we find a reduction of coverage (magnetization) at low temperatures due to the presence of the surface step. This results in a second, low-temperature transition besides the standard Ising order-disorder transition. The additional transition is characterized by a divergence of the susceptibility as a finite-size effect. Due to the surface step the mean-field specific heat diverges with a power law.

Fluctuations due to the nonlocal character of collisions

It is shown that the collision integral describing the nonlocal character of collisions leads to the same mean-field fluctuations as proposed by Boltzmann-Langevin pictures. It is argued that this appropriate collision integral contains the fluctuation-dissipation theorems in equilibrium itself and therefore there is no need to assume additionally stochasticity. This leads to tremendous simplifications in numerical simulation schemes.

Femtosecond formation of collective modes due to meanfield fluctuations

Starting from a quantum kinetic equation including the mean field and a conserving relaxation-time approximation we derive an analytic formula which describes the time dependence of the dielectric function in a plasma created by a short intense laser pulse. This formula reproduces universal features of the formation of collective modes seen in recent experimental data of femtosecond spectroscopy. The presented formula offers a tremendous simplification for the description of the formation of quasiparticle features in interacting systems. Numerical demanding treatments can now be focused on effects beyond these gross features found here to be describable analytically.

Enhancement of pairing due to the presence of resonant cavities

A correlated fermion system is considered surrounding a finite cavity with virtual levels. The pairing properties are calculated and the influence of the cavity is demonstrated. To this end the Gell-Mann and Goldberger formula is generalized to many-body systems. We find a possible enhancement of pairing temperature if the Fermi momentum times the cavity radius fulfills a certain resonance condition which suggests an experimental realization.

Correlated two-particle scattering on finite cavities

The correlated two-particle problem is solved analytically in the presence of a finite cavity. The method is demonstrated here in terms of exactly solvable models for both the cavity as well as the two-particle correlation where the two-particle potential is chosen in separable form. The two-particle phase shift is calculated and compared to the single-particle one. The two-particle bound state behavior is discussed and the influence of the cavity on the binding properties is calculated.

Formation of three-particle clusters in hetero-junctions and MOSFET structures

A novel interaction mechanism in MOSFET structures and $GaAs/AlGaAs$ hetero-junctions between the zone electrons of the two-dimensional (2D) gas and the charged traps on the insulator side is considered. By applying a canonical transformation, off-diagonal terms in the Hamiltonian due to the trapped level subsystem are excluded. This yields an effective three-particle attractive interaction as well as a pairing interaction inside the 2D electronic band. A type of Bethe- Goldstone equation for three particles is studied to clarify the character of the binding and the energy of the three-particle bound states. The results are used to offer a possible explanation of the Metal-Insulator transition recently observed in MOSFET and hetero-junctions.

Exactly solvable model of three interacting particles in an external magnetic field

The quantum mechanical problem of three identical particles, moving in a plane and interacting pairwise via a spring potential, is solved exactly in the presence of a magnetic field. Calculations of the pair--correlation function, mean distance and the cluster area show a quantization of these parameters. Especially the pair-correlation function exhibits a certain number of maxima given by a quantum number. We obtain Jastrow pre-factors which lead to an exchange correlation hole of liquid type, even in the presence of the attractive interaction between the identical electrons.
