Bernoulli potential in type-I and weak type-II superconductors: I. Surface charge

The electrostatic potential close to the surface of superconductors in the Meissner state is discussed. We show that beside the Bernoulli potential, the quasiparticle screening, and the thermodynamic contribution due to Rickayzen, there is a non-local contribution which is large for both type-I and weak type-II superconductors.

Bernoulli potential in type-I and weak type-II supercoductors: II. Surface dipole

The Budd-Vannimenus theorem is modified to apply to superconductors in the Meissner state. The obtained identity links the surface value of the electrostatic potential to the density of free energy at the surface which allows one to evaluate the electrostatic potential observed via the capacitive pickup without the explicit solution of the charge profile.

Kinetic equation for strongly interacting dense Fermi systems

We review the non-relativistic Green's-function approach to the kinetic equations for Fermi liquids far from equilibrium. The emphasis is on the consistent treatment of the off-shell motion between collisions and on the non-instant and non-local picture of binary collisions. The resulting kinetic equation is of the Boltzmann type, and it represents an interpolation between the theory of transport in metals and the theory of moderately dense gases. The free motion of particles is renormalised by various mean field and mass corrections in the spirit of Landau's quasiparticles in metals. The collisions are non-local in the spirit of Enskog's theory of non-ideal gases. The collisions are moreover non-instant, a feature which is absent in the theory of gases, but which is shown to be important for dense Fermi systems. In spite of its formal complexity, the presented theory has a simple implementation within the Monte-Carlo simulation schemes. Applications in nuclear physics are given for heavy-ion reactions and the results are compared with the former theory and recent experimental data. The effect of the off-shell motion and the non-local and non-instant collisions on the dynamics of the system can be characterised in terms of thermodynamic functions such as the energy density or the pressure tensor. Non-equilibrium counterparts of these functions and the corresponding balance equations are derived and discussed from two points of view. Firstly, they are used to prove the conservation laws. Secondly, the role of individual microscopic mechanisms in fluxes of particles and momenta and in transformations of the energy is clarified.

Correlations in Many-Body Systems with Two-time Green's Functions

The Kadanoff-Baym (KB) equations are solved numerically for infinite nuclear matter. In particular we calculate correlation energies and correlation times. Approximating the Green's functions in the KB collision kernel by the free Green's functions the Levinson equation is obtained. This approximation is valid for weak interactions and/or low densities. It relates to the extended quasi-classical approximation for the spectral function. Comparing the Levinson, Born and KB calculations allows for an estimate of higher order spectral corrections to the correlations. A decrease in binding energy is reported due to spectral correlations and off-shell parts in the reduced density matrix.

Anomalous radial expansion in central heavy-ion reactions

The expansion velocity profile in central heavy-ion reactions in the Fermi energy domain is examined. The radial expansion is non-hubblean and in the surface region it scales proportional to a higher exponent ($α> 1$) of the radius. The anomalous expansion velocity profile is accompanied by a power law nucleon density profile in the surface region. Both these features of central heavy-ion reactions disappear at higher energies, and the system follows a uniform Hubble expansion ($α\simeq 1$).

Relativistic transport equations with generalized mass shell constraints

We reexamine the derivation of relativistic transport equations for fermions when conserving the most general spinor structure of the interaction and Green function. Such an extension of the formalism is needed when dealing with {\it e.g.} spin-polarized nuclear matter or non-parity conserving interactions. It is shown that some earlier derivations can lead to an incomplete description of the evolution of the system even in the case of parity-conserving, spin-saturated systems. The concepts of kinetic equation and mass shell condition have to be extended, in particular both of them acquire a non trivial spinor structure which describe a rich polarization dynamics.

Short time dynamics with initial correlations

The short-time dynamics of correlated systems is strongly influenced by initial correlations giving rise to an additional collision integral in the non-Markovian kinetic equation. Exact cancellation of the two integrals is found if the initial state is thermal equilibrium which is an important consistency criterion. Analytical results are given for the time evolution of the correlation energy which are confirmed by comparisons with molecular dynamics simulations (MD).

Simulation of Heavy Ion Reactions with Nonlocal Kinetic Equations

The incorporation of realistic trajectories of two-particle scattering into existing BUU or QMD codes meets considerable difficulties. We propose a method of replacing the scattering event by a tractable non-local scenario reproducing the correct asymptotics. The first principle derivation justifies the use of corresponding nonlocal kinetic equations. The nonlocal shifts are necessary if the system should approach an equation of state with second quantum virial coefficient. The modifications of QMD and BUU codes are discussed and comparison are presented with resent data. We find a pre-equilibrium production of particles leading to higher energetic distributions of protons.

Formation of correlations and energy-conservation at short time scales

The formation of correlations due to collisions in an interacting nucleonic system is investigated. Results from one-time kinetic equations are compared with the Kadanoff and Baym two-time equation with collisions included in Born approximation. A reasonable agreement is found for a proposed approximation of the memory effects by a finite duration of collisions. This form of collision integral is in agreement with intuitive estimates from Fermi's golden rule. The formation of correlations and the build up time is calculated analytically for the high temperature and the low temperature limit. Different approximate expressions are compared with the numerical results. We present analytically the time dependent interaction energy and the formation time for Gauß- and Yukawa type of potentials.

Damping of giant resonances in asymmetric nuclear matter

The giant collective modes in asymmetric nuclear matter are investigated within a dynamic relaxation time approximation. We derive a coupled dispersion relation and show that two sources of coupling appear: (i) a coupling of isoscalar and isovector modes due to different mean-fields acting and (ii) an explicit new coupling in asymmetric matter due to collisional interaction. We show that the latter one is responsible for a new mode arising besides isovector and isoscalar modes.

Formation of correlations at short time scales and consequences on interferometry methods

The formation of correlations due to collisions in an interacting nucleonic system is investigated shortly after a disturbance. Results from one-time kinetic equations are compared with the Kadanoff and Baym two-time equation with collisions included in second order Born approximation. A reasonable agreement is found for a proposed approximation of the memory effects by a finite duration of collisions. The formation of correlations and the build up time is calculated analytically for the high temperature and the low temperature limit. This translates into a time dependent increase of the effective temperature on time scales which interfere with standard fire ball scenarios of heavy ion collisions. The consequences of the formation of correlations on the two- particle interferometry are investigated and it is found that standard extracted lifetimes should be corrected downwards.

Dielectric properties of interacting storage ring plasmas

A dielectric function including collisional correlations is derived by linearizing the self consistent Vlasov equation with a Fokker-Planck collision integral. The calculation yields the same type of dielectric function as in the standard-theory of Schottky-noise in storage rings. This dielectric function is compared with the Mermin-dielectric function derived from a kinetic equation with relaxation time approximation. We observe that these functions are identical, however the Mermin-DF is computationally advantageous. The limits of both dielectric functions are given and the sum rules are proven. We apply these dielectric functions for typical storage ring plasmas and calculate the stopping power and the plasmon excitation spectrum.

Damping rates of hot Giant Dipole Resonances

The damping rate of hot giant dipole resonances (GDR) is investigated. Besides Landau damping we consider collisions and density fluctuations as contributions to the damping of GDR. Within the nonequilibrium Green's function method we derive a non-Markovian kinetic equation. The linearization of the latter one leads to complex dispersion relations. The complex solution provides the centroid energy and the damping width of giant resonances. The experimental damping widths are the full width half maximum (FWHM) and can be reproduced by the full width of the structure function. Within simple finite size scaling we give a relation between the minimal interaction strength which is required for a collective oscillation and the clustersize. We investigate the damping of giant dipole resonances within a Skyrme type of interaction. Different collision integrals are compared with each other in order to incorporate correlations. The inclusion of a conserving relaxation time approximation allows to find the $T^2$-dependence of the damping rate with a temperature known from the Fermi-liquid theory. However, memory effects turn out to be essential for a proper treatment of the damping of collective modes. We derive a Landau like formula for the one--particle relaxation time similar to the damping of zero sound.

Transport theory with nonlocal corrections

A kinetic equation which combines the quasiparticle drift of Landau's equation with a dissipation governed by a nonlocal and noninstant scattering integral in the spirit of Snider's equation for gases is derived. Consequent balance equations for the density, momentum and energy include quasiparticle contributions and the second order quantum virial corrections and are proven to be consistent with conservation laws.

Nonlinear Debye-Onsager-Relaxation-Effect

The quantum kinetic equation for charged particles in strong electric fields is used to derive the nonlinear particle flux. The relaxation field is calculated quantum mechanically up to any order in the applied field provided a given Maxwellian plasma. The classical limit is given in analytical form. In the range of weak fields the deformation of the screening cloud is responsible for the Debye-Onsager relaxation effect.

Formation of correlations in strongly coupled plasmas

The formation of binary correlations in plasma is studied from the quantum kinetic equation. It is shown that this formation is much faster than dissipation due to collisions. In a hot (dense) plasma the correlations are formed on the scale of inverse plasma frequency (Fermi energy). We derive analytical formulae for the time dependency of the potential energy which measures the extent of correlations. We discuss the dynamical formation of screening and compare with the statical screened result. Comparisons are made with molecular dynamic simulations.

Medium modification of two-particle scattering in nonideal Bose systems

Medium modification of scattering properties in interacting Bose systems are considered by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation. An equation of state for the normal phase (generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck formula) is given using the in-medium phase shifts to include two-particle correlations. Conclusions are drawn for systems of bosonic atoms with repulsive interaction such as sodium $^{23}$Na and rubidium $^{87}$Rb. It is shown that the in-medium scattering length and the absolute value of the in-medium scattering phase shift for low scattering energies increase with density.

New collective mode due to collisional coupling

Starting from a nonmarkovian conserving relaxation time approximation for collisions we derive coupled dispersion relations for asymmetric nuclear matter. The isovector and isoscalar modes are coupled due to asymmetric nuclear meanfield acting on neutrons and protons differently. A further coupling is observed by collisional correlations. The latter one leads to the appearance of a new soft mode besides isoscalar and isovector modes in the system. We suggest that this mode might be observable in asymmetric systems. This soft mode approaches the isovector mode for high temperatures. At the same time the isovector mode remains finite and approaches a constant value at higher temperatures showing a transition from zero sound like damping to first sound. The damping of the new soft mode is first sound like at all temperatures.
