Temperature in One-Dimensional Bosonic Mott insulators

The Mott insulating phase of a one-dimensional bosonic gas trapped in optical lattices is described by a Bose-Hubbard model. A continuous unitary transformation is used to map this model onto an effective model conserving the number of elementary excitations. We obtain quantitative results for the kinetics and for the spectral weights of the low-energy excitations for a broad range of parameters in the insulating phase. By these results, recent Bragg spectroscopy experiments are explained. Evidence for a significant temperature of the order of the microscopic energy scales is found.

Raman Response of Magnetic Excitations in Cuprate Ladders and Planes

An unified picture for the Raman response of magnetic excitations in cuprate spin-ladder compounds is obtained by comparing calculated two-triplon Raman line-shapes with those of the prototypical compounds SrCu2O3 (Sr123), Sr14Cu24O41 (Sr14), and La6Ca8Cu24O41 (La6Ca8). The theoretical model for the two-leg ladder contains Heisenberg exchange couplings J_parallel and J_perp plus an additional four-spin interaction J_cyc. Within this model Sr123 and Sr14 can be described by x:=J_parallel/J_perp=1.5, x_cyc:=J_cyc/J_perp=0.2, J_perp^Sr123=1130 cm^-1 and J_perp^Sr14=1080 cm^-1. The couplings found for La6Ca8 are x=1.2, x_cyc=0.2, and J_perp^La6Ca8=1130 cm^-1. The unexpected sharp two-triplon peak in the ladder materials compared to the undoped two-dimensional cuprates can be traced back to the anisotropy of the magnetic exchange in rung and leg direction. With the results obtained for the isotropic ladder we calculate the Raman line-shape of a two-dimensional square lattice using a toy model consisting of a vertical and a horizontal ladder. A direct comparison of these results with Raman experiments for the two-dimensional cuprates R2CuO4 (R=La,Nd), Sr2CuO2Cl2, and YBa2Cu3O(6+delta) yields a good agreement for the dominating two-triplon peak. We conclude that short range quantum fluctuations are dominating the magnetic Raman response in both, ladders and planes. We discuss possible scenarios responsible for the high-energy spectral weight of the Raman line-shape, i.e. phonons, the triple-resonance and multi-particle contributions.

Magnetic Excitations in Bilayer High-Temperature Superconductors with Stripe Correlations

The universal behaviour of the magnetic excitations in high-temperature superconductors is described in a model with static stripes retaining only the localized spin degrees of freedom. The stripes are represented by a model of coupled two-leg spin ladders. We start from the results obtained previously by continuous unitary transformations for an isolated spin ladder. A quantitative description of neutron scattering data is reached, using a model for a single cuprate layer with well established values of the exchange coupling constants. The neutron resonance peak is explained in terms of a saddle point in the dispersion of the magnetic excitations. Here we make predictions for bilayer systems with in-phase or out-of-phase stripe correlations. The results may serve as a guide for future experimental analyses.

Magnetic excitations in the stripe phase of high-T_c superconductors

The magnetic excitations in the stripe phase of high-T_c superconductors are investigated in a model of spin ladders which are effectively coupled via charged stripes. Starting from the effective single-triplon model for the isolated spin ladder, the quasi-one-dimensional spin system can be described straightforwardly. Very good agreement is obtained with recent neutron scattering data on La_(15/8)Ba_(1/8)CuO_4 (no spin gap) and YBa_2Cu_3O_(6.6) (gapped). The signature of quasi-one-dimensional spin physics in a single-domain stripe phase is predicted.

Unifying Magnons and Triplons in Stripe-Ordered Cuprate Superconductors

Based on a two-dimensional model of coupled two-leg spin ladders, we derive a unified picture of recent neutron scattering data of stripe-ordered La_(15/8)Ba_(1/8)CuO_4, namely of the low-energy magnons around the superstructure satellites and of the triplon excitations at higher energies. The resonance peak at the antiferromagnetic wave vector Q_AF in the stripe-ordered phase corresponds to a saddle point in the dispersion of the magnetic excitations. Quantitative agreement with the neutron data is obtained for J= 130-160 meV and J_cyc/J = 0.2-0.25.

Charge order induced sharp Raman peak in Sr_14Cu_24O_41

In the two-leg S=1/2 ladders of Sr_14Cu_24O_41 a modulation of the exchange coupling arises from the charge order within the other structural element, the CuO_2 chains. In general, breaking translational invariance by modulation causes gaps within the dispersion of elementary excitations. We show that the gap induced by the charge order can drastically change the magnetic Raman spectrum leading to the sharp peak observed in Sr_14Cu_24O_41. This sharp Raman line gives insight in the charge-order periodicity and hence in the distribution of carriers. The much broader spectrum of La_6Ca_8Cu_24O$_41 reflects the response of an undoped ladder in the absence of charge order.

Rung-singlet phase of the S=1/2 two-leg spin-ladder with four-spin cyclic exchange

Using continuous unitary transformations (CUT) we calculate the one-triplet gap for the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder with additional four-spin exchange interactions in a high order series expansion about the limit of isolated rungs. By applying a novel extrapolation technique we calculate the transition line between the rung-singlet phase and a spontaneously dimerized phase with dimers on the legs. Using this efficient extrapolation technique we are able to analyze the crossover from strong rung coupling to weakly coupled chains.

Novel Extrapolation for Strong Coupling Expansions

We present a novel extrapolation scheme for high order series expansions. The idea is to express the series, obtained in orders of an external variable, in terms of an internal parameter of the system. Here we apply this method to the 1-triplet dispersion in an antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg ladder. By the use of the internal parameter the accuracy of the truncated series is enhanced tremendously.

Fractional and Integer Excitations in Quantum Antiferromagnetic Spin 1/2 Ladders

Spectral densities are computed in unprecedented detail for quantum antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 two-leg ladders. These results were obtained due to a major methodical advance achieved by optimally chosen unitary transformations. The approach is based on dressed integer excitations. Considerable weight is found at high energies in the two-particle sector. Precursors of fractional spinon physics occur implying that there is no necessity to resort to fractional excitations in order to describe features at higher energies.

Magnetic excitations in two-leg spin 1/2 ladders: experiment and theory

Magnetic excitations in two-leg S=1/2 ladders are studied both experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally, we report on the reflectivity, the transmission and the optical conductivity sigma(omega) of undoped La_x Ca_14-x Cu_24 O_41 for x=4, 5, and 5.2. Using two different theoretical approaches (Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation theory), we calculate the dispersion of the elementary triplets, the optical conductivity and the momentum-resolved spectral density of two-triplet excitations for 0.2 <= J_parallel/J_perpendicular <= 1.2. We discuss phonon-assisted two-triplet absorption, the existence of two-triplet bound states, the two-triplet continuum, and the size of the exchange parameters.

Optical spectroscopy of (La,Ca)14Cu24O41 spin ladders: comparison of experiment and theory

Transmission and reflectivity of La_x Ca_14-x Cu_24 O_41 two-leg spin-1/2 ladders were measured in the mid-infrared regime between 500 and 12000 1/cm. This allows us to determine the optical conductivity sigma_1 directly and with high sensitivity. Here we show data for x=4 and 5 with the electrical field polarized parallel to the rungs (E||a) and to the legs (E||c). Three characteristic peaks are identified as magnetic excitations by comparison with two different theoretical calculations.
