Evidence for the Jacobi shape transition in hot 46Ti

The gamma-rays from the decay of the GDR in 46Ti compound nucleus formed in the 18O+28Si reaction at bombarding energy 105 MeV have been measured in an experiment using a setup consisting of the combined EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays. A comparison of the extracted GDR lineshape data with the predictions of the thermal shape fluctuation model shows evidence for the Jacobi shape transition in hot 46Ti. In addition to the previously found broad structure in the GDR lineshape region at 18-27 MeV caused by large deformations, the presence of a low energy component (around 10 MeV), due to the Coriolis splitting in prolate well deformed shape, has been identified for the first time.

Mean-Field Description of Fusion Barriers with Skyrme's Interaction

Fusion barriers are determined in the framework of the Skyrme energy-density functional together with the semi-classical approach known as the Extended Thomas-Fermi method. The barriers obtained in this way with the Skyrme interaction SkM* turn out to be close to those generated by phenomenological models like those using the proximity potentials. It is also shown that the location and the structure of the fusion barrier in the vicinity of its maximum and beyond can be quite accurately described by a simple analytical form depending only on the masses and the relative isospin of target and projectile nucleus.

Search for the Jacobi shape transition in light nuclei

The gamma-rays following the reaction 105 MeV 18O + 28Si have been measured using the EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays in order to investigate the predicted Jacobi shape transition. The high-energy gamma-ray spectrum from the GDR decay indicates a presence of large deformations in hot 46Ti nucleus, in agreement with new theoretical calculations based on the Rotating Liquid Drop model.

Fission-Fragment Mass Distribution and Particle Evaporation at low Energies

Fusion-fission dynamics is investigated with a special emphasis on fusion reactions at low energy for which shell effects and pairing correlations can play a crucial role leading in particular to multi-modal fission. To follow the dynamical evolution of an excited and rotating nucleus we solve a 2-dimensional Langevin equation taking explicitly light-particle evaporation into account. The confrontation theory-experiment is demonstrated to give interesting information on the model presented, its qualities as well as its shortcomings.

Shell Structure of Cesium Layer Covering the C60 Fullerene Core

Strutinsky shell corrections for the Cesium-coated fullerenes were investigated. The single particle levels of electrons are obtained using the spherical mean-field potential of a shifted Wood-Saxon type. The parameters of the potential are adjusted to reproduce the experimental ionization energies of the Cs(N) clusters and the magic numbers observed in their photo-ionization spectra of the C60Cs(N) aggregates.

Nuclear Liquid Drop Model with the Surface-Curvature Terms: New Perspectives for the Hyperdeformation Studies

Nuclear liquid drop model is revisited and an explicit introduction of the surface-curvature terms is presented. The corresponding parameters of the extended classical energy formula are adjusted to the contemporarily known nuclear binding energies and fission barrier heights. Using 2766 binding energies of nuclei with $Z\geq 8$ and $N\geq 8$ it is shown that the performance of the new approach is improved by a factor of about 6, compared to the previously published liquid drop model results, in terms of both the masses (new r.m.s. deviation $<δM> = 0.698$ MeV) and the fission barriers (new r.m.s. deviation of the fission barriers of isotopes with $Z> 70$ is $<δV_B> = 0.88$ MeV). The role of the curvature terms and their effects on the description of the experimental quantities are discussed in detail; for comparison the parameters of the more 'traditional' approaches are re-fitted taking into account the nuclear masses known today and the performances of several variants of the model are compared. The isospin dependence in the new description of the barriers is in a good agreement with the extended Thomas-Fermi approach; it also demonstrates a good qualitative agreement with the fission life-time systematics tested on the long chain of Fermium isotopes known experimentally. The new approach offers also a very high stability in terms of the extrapolation from the narrower range of nuclides to a more extended one - a property of particular interest for the contemporary exotic beam projects: the corresponding properties are illustrated and discussed.

Selfconsistent calculations of fission barriers in the Fm region

The fission barriers of the nuclei 254Fm, 256Fm, 258Fm, 258No and 260Rf are investigated in a fully microscopic way up to the scission point. The analysis is based on the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory and Gogny's D1S force. The quadrupole, octupole and hexadecapole moments as well as the number of nucleons in the neck region are used as constraints. Two fission paths, corresponding to the bimodal fission, are found. The decrease with isotope mass of the half-life times of heavy Fm isotopes is also explained.

Liquid Drop Model with Different Neutron versus Proton Deformations

The nuclear binding energies for 28 nuclei including several isotopic chains with masses ranging from A=64 to A=226 were evaluated using the Skyrme effective nucleon-nucleon interaction and the Extended Thomas-Fermi approximation. The neutron and proton density distributions are assumed in the form of Fermi functions the parameters of which are determined so as to minimize the total binding energy of any given nucleus. The present study is restricted to quadrupole shapes, but the neutron and proton density distributions are free to have different deformations. A simple expression for the variation of the nuclear energy with the neutron--proton deformation difference is derived.

The Neutron Halo in Heavy Nuclei Calculated with the Gogny Force

The proton and neutron density distributions, one- and two-neutron separation energies and radii of nuclei for which neutron halos are experimentally observed, are calculated using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with the effective interaction of Gogny. Halo factors are evaluated assuming hydrogen-like antiproton wave functions. The factors agree well with experimental data. They are close to those obtained with Skyrme forces and with the relativistic mean field approach.

Light-particle emission from the fissioning nuclei 126Ba, 188Pt and (266,272,278)/110: theoretical predictions and experimental results

We present a comparison of our model treating fission dynamics in conjunction with light-particle (n, p, alpha) evaporation with the available experimental data for the nuclei 126Ba, 188Pt and three isotopes of the element Z=110. The dynamics of the symmetric fission process is described through the solution of a classical Langevin equation for a single collective variable characterizing the nuclear deformation along the fission path. A microscopic approach is used to evaluate the emission rates for pre-fission light particles. Entrance-channel effects are taken into account by generating an initial spin distribution of the compound nucleus formed by the fusion of two deformed nuclei with different relative orientations.

Effect of differences in proton and neutron density distributions on fission barriers

The neutron and proton density distributions obtained in constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations with the Gogny force along the fission paths of 232Th, 236U, 238U and 240Pu are analyzed. Significant differences in the multipole deformations of neutron and proton densities are found. The effect on potential energy surfaces and on barrier heights of an additional constraint imposing similar spatial distributions to neutrons and protons, as assumed in macroscopic-microscopic models, is studied.

Collective Quadrupole Excitations in Transitional Nuclei

The generalized Bohr Hamiltonian was used to describe the low-lying collective excitations in even-even isotopes of Ru, Pd, Te, Ba and Nd. The Strutinsky collective potential and cranking inertial functions were obtained using the Nilsson potential. The effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations is taken into account approximately when determining the inertial functions. The calculation does not contain any free parameter.

Quadrupole excitations of even-even Ru and Pd isotopes are described within microscopic approach based on the general collective Bohr model which includes the effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations. The excitation energies and E2 transition probabilities observed in 104-114Ru and 106-110Pd are reproduced in the frame of the calculation containing no free parameters.

Collective quadrupole excitations in the 50<Z,N<82 nuclei with the generalized Bohr Hamiltonian

The generalized Bohr Hamiltonian is applied to a description of low-lying collective excitations in even-even isotopes of Te, Xe, Ba, Ce, Nd and Sm. The collective potential and inertial functions are determined by means of the Strutinsky method and the cranking model, respectively. A shell-dependent parametrization of the Nilsson potential is used. An approximate particle-number projection is performed in treatment of pairing correlations. The effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations is taken into account approximately when determining the inertial functions. The calculation does not contain any free parameter.

Isospin Dependence of Proton and Neutron Radii within Relativistic Mean Field Theory

The average isospin dependence of the radii of protons and neutrons evaluated within the relativistic mean field theory is studied. A simple, phenomenological formula for neutron radii is proposed.

Decay of hot, rotating, compound nuclei

The fusion process and the competition between fission and n, p and alpha-particle emission is studied. The calculations are performed for nuclei at excitation energies from 80 MeV up to about 300 MeV. The nuclear fission is described by a Langevin equation coupled to the Master equation for particle evaporation. A significant influence of the initial spin distribution on the prescission particles multiplicities is found.

Ground state properties of the $β$ stable nuclei in various mean field theories

The separation energies of neutrons and protons, binding energies, mean square charge radii, electric quadrupole moments and deformation parameters of the proton and neutron distributions are evaluated for $β$ stable even-even nuclei with $16 \leq A \leq 256$. We compare the theoretical estimates obtained within the Hartree-Fock plus BCS model with a few sets of Skyrme forces, relativistic mean-field theory and frequently used Saxon-Woods and Nilsson potentials with experimental data.

Stability of the Heaviest Nuclei on Spontaneous-Fission and Alpha-Decay

Spontaneous-fission half-lives of the heaviest even-even nuclei are evaluated and compared with their alpha-decay mode. Calculations of spontaneous-fission half-lives are performed in the dynamical way with potential energy obtained by the macroscopic-microscopic method and the inertia tensor obtained by the cranking approximation. The alpha-decay half-lives are calculated for the same region of nuclei by use of the Viola and Seaborg formula. The ground-state properties such as mean square radii and electric quadrupole moments are also studied. From the analysis of spontaneous-fission half-life values it is found that a peninsula of deformed metastable superheavy nuclei near Z=106 and N=162 is separated from an island of the spherical superheavy, around the doubly magic nucleus with Z=114 and N=184, by a trench in the vicinity of neutron number N=170.
