Coupling Between An Optical Phonon and the Kondo Effect

We explore the ultra-fast optical response of Yb_{14}MnSb_{11}, providing further evidence that this Zintl compound is the first ferromagnetic, under-screened Kondo lattice. These experiments also provide the first demonstration of coupling between an optical phonon mode and the Kondo effect.

Disparities in the Josephson vortex state electrodynamics of high-Tc cuprates

We report on far infrared measurements of interplane conductivity for underdoped single-crystal YBa2Cu3Oy in magnetic field and situate these new data within earlier work on two other high-Tc cuprate superconductors, La(2-x)SrxCuO4 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d). The three systems have displayed apparently disparate electrodynamic responses in the Josephson vortex state formed when magnetic field H is applied parallel to the CuO2 planes. Specifically, there is discrepancy in the number and field dependence of longitudinal modes observed. We compare and contrast these findings with several models of the electrodynamics in the vortex state and suggest that most differences can be reconciled through considerations of the Josephson vortex lattice ground state as well as the c-axis and in-plane quasiparticle dissipations.

Correlated metallic state of vanadium dioxide

The metal-insulator transition and unconventional metallic transport in vanadium dioxide (VO$_2$) are investigated with a combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and reflectance measurements. The data indicates that electronic correlations, not electron-phonon interactions, govern charge dynamics in the metallic state of VO$_2$. This study focuses on the frequency and temperature dependence of the conductivity in the regime of extremely short mean free path violating the Ioffe-Regel-Mott limit of metallic transport. The standard quasiparticle picture of charge conduction is found to be untenable in metallic VO$_2$.

Infrared probe of the anomalous magnetotransport of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in the extreme quantum limit

We present a systematic investigation of the magnetoreflectance of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in magnetic field B up to 18 T . From these measurements, we report the determination of lifetimes tau associated with the lowest Landau levels in the quantum limit. We find a linear field dependence for inverse lifetime 1/tau(B) of the lowest Landau levels, which is consistent with the hypothesis of a three-dimensional (3D) to 1D crossover in an anisotropic 3D metal in the quantum limit. This enigmatic result uncovers the origin of the anomalous linear in-plane magnetoresistance observed both in bulk graphite and recently in mesoscopic graphite samples.

Impurity Band Conduction in a High Temperature Ferromagnetic Semiconductor

The band structure of a prototypical dilute ferromagnetic semiconductor, Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As, is studied across the phase diagram via optical spectroscopy. We prove that the Fermi energy ($E_{F}$) resides in a Mn induced impurity band (IB). This conclusion is based upon careful analysis of the frequency and temperature dependence of the optical conductivity ($σ_{1}(ω,T)$). From our analysis of $σ_{1}(ω,T)$ we infer a large effective mass ($m^*$) of the carriers, supporting the view that conduction occurs in an IB. Our results also provide useful insights into the transport properties of Mn-doped GaAs.

Optical study of interactions in a d-electron Kondo lattice with ferromagnetism

We report on a comprehensive optical, transport and thermodynamic study of the Zintl compound Yb$_{14}$MnSb$_{11}$, demonstrating that it is the first ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound in the underscreened limit. We propose a scenerio whereby the combination of Kondo and Jahn-Teller effects provides a consistent explanation of both transport and optical data.

Ellipsometric study of the Electronic Structure of GaMnAs and LT-GaAs

We have measured the optical constants of GaMnAs from 0.62 eV to 6 eV, using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The second derivatives of the dielectric function are examined through a critical point analysis. The E1 critical point shifts to higher energies with increased doping of Mn, while all other critical points appear unaffected. The evolution of the critical points results from the interplay between band gap renormalization from ionized impurities and sp-d hybridization of the Mn induced impurity band and GaAs valence and conductions bands.
