Approximate symmetries of geodesic equations on 2-spheres

Approximate symmetries of geodesic equations on 2-spheres are studied. These are the symmetries of the perturbed geodesic equations which represent approximate path of a particle rather than exact path. After giving the exact symmetries of the geodesic equations, two different approaches to study the approximate symmetries of the approximate geodesic equations show that no non-trivial approximate symmetry for these spaces exists.

Conformal Ricci collineations of static spherically symmetric spacetimes

Conformal Ricci collineations of static spherically symmetric spacetimes are studied. The general form of the vector fields generating conformal Ricci collineations is found when the Ricci tensor is non-degenerate, in which case the number of independent conformal Ricci collineations is \emph{fifteen}; the maximum number for 4-dimensional manifolds. In the degenerate case it is found that the static spherically symmetric spacetimes always have an infinite number of conformal Ricci collineations. Some examples are provided which admit non-trivial conformal Ricci collineations, and perfect fluid source of the matter.

On the definition of matter collineations

It is shown that when the stress-energy tensor of a spacetime is diagonal and is written in the mixed form, its collineations admit infinite dimensional Lie algebras except possibly in the case when the tensor depends on all the spacetime coordinates. The result can be extended for more general second rank tensors.

Quantum corrections to the entropy of Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion black holes

We study the corrections to the entropy of Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion black holes beyond semiclassical approximations. We consider the entropy of the black hole as a state variable and derive these corrections using the exactness criteria of the first law of thermodynamics. We note that from this general frame-work the entropy corrections for "simpler" black holes like Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström and anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild black holes follow easily. This procedure gives us the modified area law as well.

Quantum corrections to the entropy of charged rotating black holes

Hawking radiation from a black hole can be viewed as quantum tunneling of particles through the event horizon. Using this approach we provide a general framework for studying corrections to the entropy of black holes beyond semiclassical approximations. Applying the properties of exact differentials for three variables to the first law thermodynamics, we study charged rotating black holes and explicitly work out the corrections to entropy and horizon area for the Kerr-Newman and charged rotating BTZ black holes. It is shown that the results for other geometries like the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström and anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetimes follow easily.

Conformal motions in plane symmetric static spacetimes

In this paper, conformal motions are studied in plane symmetric static spacetimes. The general solution of conformal Killing equations and the general form of the conformal Killing vector for these spacetimes are presented. All possibilities for the existence of conformal motions in these spacetimes are exhausted.

Lie symmetries of the energy-momentum tensor for plane symmetric static spacetimes

Matter collineations (MCs) are the vector fields along which the energy-momentum tensor remains invariant under the Lie transport. Invariance of the metric, the Ricci and the Riemann tensors have been studied extensively and the vectors along which these tensors remain invariant are called Killing vectors (KVs), Ricci collineations (RCs) and curvature collineations (CCs), respectively. In this paper plane symmetric static spacetimes have been studied for their MCs. Explicit form of MCs together with the Lie algebra admitted by them has been presented. Examples of spacetimes have been constructed for which MCs have been compared with their RCs and KVs. The comparison shows that neither of the sets of RCs and MCs contains the other, in general.

Geometric symmetries on Lorentzian manifolds

Lie derivatives of various geometrical and physical quantities define symmetries and conformal symmetries in general relativity. Thus we obtain motions, collineations, conformal motions and conformal collineations. These symmetries are used not only to find new solutions of Einstein's field equations but to classify the spaces also. Different classification schemes are presented here. Relationships between these symmetries are discussed and illustrating examples are presented.

Weyl collineations that are not curvature collineations

Though the Weyl tensor is a linear combination of the curvature tensor, Ricci tensor and Ricci scalar, it does not have all and only the Lie symmetries of these tensors since it is possible, in principle, that "asymmetries cancel". Here we investigate if, when and how the symmetries can be different. It is found that we can obtain a metric with a finite dimensional Lie algebra of Weyl symmetries that properly contains the Lie algebra of curvature symmetries. There is no example found for the converse requirement. It is speculated that there may be a fundamental reason for this lack of "duality".

Symmetries of the Weyl tensor in Bianchi V spacetimes

Symmetries of geometrical and physical quantities in general relativity provide important information about the curvature structure of the spacetimes. Symmetries of the curvature and the Weyl tensors, known as curvature and Weyl collineations respectively, are two of such important symmetries. Some results on these symmetries for Bianchi type V spacetimes are discussed.

Classification of spacetimes according to conformal Killing vectors

Conformal Killing vectors (CKVs) preserve the spacetime metric up to a factor. Homothetic vectors and Killing vectors are special cases of CKVs. Classification of some classes of spacetimes on the basis of CKVs give interesting results showing how homothetic and Killing vectors which form subsets of the set of CKVs can be recovered as a result of the above classification.
