Detecting Colorized Images via Convolutional Neural Networks: Toward High Accuracy and Good Generalization

Image colorization achieves more and more realistic results with the increasing computation power of recent deep learning techniques. It becomes more difficult to identify the fake colorized images by human eyes. In this work, we propose a novel forensic method to distinguish between natural images (NIs) and colorized images (CIs) based on convolutional neural network (CNN). Our method is able to achieve high classification accuracy and cope with the challenging scenario of blind detection, i.e., no training sample is available from "unknown" colorization algorithm that we may encounter during the testing phase. This blind detection performance can be regarded as a generalization performance. First, we design and implement a base network, which can attain better performance in terms of classification accuracy and generalization (in most cases) compared with state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, we design a new branch, which analyzes smaller regions of extracted features, and insert it into the above base network. Consequently, our network can not only improve the classification accuracy, but also enhance the generalization in the vast majority of cases. To further improve the performance of blind detection, we propose to automatically construct negative samples through linear interpolation of paired natural and colorized images. Then, we progressively insert these negative samples into the original training dataset and continue to train the network. Experimental results demonstrate that our method can achieve stable and high generalization performance when tested against different state-of-the-art colorization algorithms.

$4\times4$ unextendible product basis and genuinely entangled space

We show that there are six inequivalent $4\times4$ unextendible product bases (UPBs) of size eight, when we consider only 4-qubit product vectors. We apply our results to construct Positive-Partial-Transpose entangled states of rank nine. They are at the same 4-qubit, $2\times2\times4$ and $4\times4$ states, and their ranges have product vectors. One of the six UPBs turns out to be orthogonal to an almost genuinely entangled space, in the sense that the latter does not contain $4\times4$ product vector in any bipartition of 4-qubit systems. We also show that the multipartite UPB orthogonal to a genuinely entangled space exists if and only if the $n\times n\times n$ UPB orthogonal to a genuinely entangled space exists for some $n$. These results help understand an open problem in [Phys. Rev. A 98, 012313, 2018].

Transient High-energy Gamma-rays and Neutrinos from Nearby Type II Supernovae

The dense wind environment (or circumstellar medium) may be ubiquitous for the regular Type II supernovae (SNe) before the explosion, the interaction of which with the SN ejecta could result in a wind breakout event. The shock generated by the interaction of the SN ejecta and the wind can accelerate the protons and subsequently the high-energy gamma-rays and neutrinos could arise from the inelastic pp collisions. In this work, we present the detailed calculations of gamma-ray and neutrino production for the regular Type II SNe. The calculation is executed by applying time-dependent evolutions of dynamic and proton distribution so that the emission could be shown at different times. Our results show, for the SN 2013fs-like wind environment, the multi-GeV and ~ few-100 TeV gamma-rays are detectable with a time window of several days at <~ 2-3 Mpc by Fermi/LAT and CTA during the ejecta-wind interaction, respectively, and can be detected at a further distance if the wind environment is denser. Besides, we found the contribution of the wind breakouts of regular Type II SNe to diffuse neutrino flux is subdominant by assuming all Type II SNe are SN 2013fs-like, whereas for a denser wind environment the contribution could be conspicuous above 300TeV.

The Magnetic Properties of 1111-type Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor (La$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)AsO in the Low Doping Regime

We investigated the magnetic properties of (La$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)AsO with $x$ varying from 0.005 to 0.05 at an external magnetic field of 1000 Oe. For doping levels of $x$ $\leq$ 0.01, the system remains paramagnetic down to the lowest measurable temperature of 2 K. Only when the doping level increases to $x$ = 0.02 does the ferromagnetic ordering appear. Our analysis indicates that antiferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate for $x$ $\leq$ 0.01, as shown by the negative Weiss temperature fitted from the magnetization data. The Weiss temperature becomes positive, i.e., ferromagnetic coupling starts to dominate, for $x$ $\geq$ 0.02. The Mn-Mn spin interaction parameter $\mid$$2J/k_B$$\mid$ is estimated to be in the order of 10 K for both $x$ $\leq$ 0.01 (antiferromagnetic ordered state) and $x$ $\geq$ 0.02 (ferromagnetic ordered state). Our results unequivocally demonstrate the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in carrier-mediated ferromagnetic systems.

Fast and Flexible Indoor Scene Synthesis via Deep Convolutional Generative Models

We present a new, fast and flexible pipeline for indoor scene synthesis that is based on deep convolutional generative models. Our method operates on a top-down image-based representation, and inserts objects iteratively into the scene by predicting their category, location, orientation and size with separate neural network modules. Our pipeline naturally supports automatic completion of partial scenes, as well as synthesis of complete scenes. Our method is significantly faster than the previous image-based method and generates result that outperforms it and other state-of-the-art deep generative scene models in terms of faithfulness to training data and perceived visual quality.

Searching for the light Higgsinos in MSSM at the future e-p colliders

The search of the light Higgsino {in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM)} is a crucial test for the criteria of the naturalness in supersymmetry. On the other hand, the direct production of light Higgsino is also known as one of the most challenging SUSY searches at the current CERN Large Hadron collider (LHC). The lack of visible leptons due to the compressed spectrum and their small production rates limits their discovery potential in both mono-jet plus MET as well as the weak boson fusion (WBF) production. The signal $S/B$ ratio prediction is usually within the background systematic uncertainties at the LHC. Without color exchange between the beams, the $e-p$ colliders are well-known to have the WBF feature. Therefore, we study the search of the light Higgsinos at two future $e-p$ colliders at CERN, LHeC and FCC-eh.~The light Higgsinos will be produced in pair through weak boson fusion with controlled background at these colliders. We find the Higgsino of 95/145~GeV can be reached at 2$σ$ level at the future LHeC/FCC-eh with a luminosity $3 ~\text{ab}^{-1}$ respectively.

Interval Superposition Arithmetic for Guaranteed Parameter Estimation

The problem of guaranteed parameter estimation (GPE) consists in enclosing the set of all possible parameter values, such that the model predictions match the corresponding measurements within prescribed error bounds. One of the bottlenecks in GPE algorithms is the construction of enclosures for the image-set of factorable functions. In this paper, we introduce a novel set-based computing method called interval superposition arithmetics (ISA) for the construction of enclosures of such image sets and its use in GPE algorithms. The main benefits of using ISA in the context of GPE lie in the improvement of enclosure accuracy and in the implied reduction of number set-membership tests of the set-inversion algorithm.

Monitoring AGNs with Hβ Asymmetry. I. First Results: Velocity-resolved Reverberation Mapping

We have started a long-term reverberation mapping project using the Wyoming Infrared Observatory 2.3 meter telescope titled "Monitoring AGNs with Hβ Asymmetry" (MAHA). The motivations of the project are to explore the geometry and kinematics of the gas responsible for complex Hβ emission-line profiles, ideally leading to an understanding of the structures and origins of the broad-line region (BLR). Furthermore, such a project provides the opportunity to search for evidence of close binary supermassive black holes. We describe MAHA and report initial results from our first campaign, from December 2016 to May 2017, highlighting velocity-resolved time lags for four AGNs with asymmetric Hβ lines. We find that 3C 120, Ark 120, and Mrk 6 display complex features different from the simple signatures expected for pure outflow, inflow, or a Keplerian disk. While three of the objects have been previously reverberation mapped, including velocity-resolved time lags in the cases of 3C 120 and Mrk 6, we report a time lag and corresponding black hole mass measurement for SBS 1518+593 for the first time. Furthermore, SBS 1518+593, the least asymmetric of the four, does show velocity-resolved time lags characteristic of a Keplerian disk or virialized motion more generally. Also, the velocity-resolved time lags of 3C 120 have significantly changed since previously observed, indicating an evolution of its BLR structure. Future analyses of the data for these objects and others in MAHA will explore the full diversity of Hβ lines and the physics of AGN BLRs.

Constructing $2\times2\times4$ and $4\times4$ unextendible product bases and positive-partial-transpose entangled states

The 4-qubit unextendible product basis (UPB) has been recently studied by [Johnston, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 47 (2014) 424034]. From this result we show that there is only one UPB of size $6$ and six UPBs of size $9$ in $\cH=\bbC^2\ox\bbC^2\ox\bbC^4$, three UPBs of size $9$ in $\cK=\bbC^4\ox\bbC^4$, and no UPB of size $7$ in $\cH$ and $\cK$. Furthermore we construct a 4-qubit positive-partial-transpose (PPT) entangled state $\r$ of rank seven, and show that it is also a PPT entangled state in $\cH$ and $\cK$, respectively. We analytically derive the geometric measure of entanglement of a special $\r$.

Hochschild (co)homologies of dg $K$-rings and their Koszul duals

We formulate the (co)bar construction theory of dg $K$-(co)rings and the calculus theory of the Hochschild homology and cohomology of dg $K$-rings. As applications, we compare the Hochschild (co)homologies of a complete typical dg $K$-ring and its Koszul dual. Moreover, we show that the Koszul dual of a finite dimensional complete typical $d$-symmetric dg $K$-ring is a $d$-Calabi-Yau dg algebra whose Hochschild cohomology is a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Furthermore, we prove that the Hochschild cohomologies of a finite dimensional complete typical $d$-symmetric dg $K$-ring and its Koszul dual are isomorphic as Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. In conclusion, we found a connection between the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structures on the Hochschild cohomologies of $d$-Calabi-Yau dg algebras and $d$-symmetric dg $K$-rings.

A High-Quality velocity-delay map of the broad-line region in NGC 5548

NGC 5548 has been well spectroscopically monitored for reverberation mapping of the central kinematics by 19 campaigns. Using the maximum entropy method in this Letter, we build up a high-quality velocity-delay map of the H$β$ emission line in the light curves of the continuum and the line variations observed between 2015-2016. The map shows the response strength and lags of the velocity fields of the H$β$ emitting regions. The velocity-delay structure of the map is generally symmetric, with strong red and blue wings at time lag $τ\leq 15$ days, a narrower velocity distribution at $τ\geq 15$ days, and a deficit of response in the core. This is suggestive of a disk geometry of the broad-line region (BLR). The relatively weaker H$β$ response at the longer lags in the red side indicates anisotropic emission from the outer part of the BLR. We also recover the velocity-delay maps of NGC 5548 from the historical data of 13 years to investigate the long-term variability of its BLR. In general, the BLR of NGC 5548 was switching between the inflow and virialized phases in the past years. The resultant maps of seven years reveal inflow signatures and show decreasing lags, indicating that the changes in the BLR size are related to the infalling BLR gas. The other four maps show potential disk signatures which are similar to our map.

Deep Learning Analysis of Defect and Phase Evolution During Electron Beam Induced Transformations in WS2

Understanding elementary mechanisms behind solid-state phase transformations and reactions is the key to optimizing desired functional properties of many technologically relevant materials. Recent advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) allow the real-time visualization of solid-state transformations in materials, including those induced by an electron beam and temperature, with atomic resolution. However, despite the ever-expanding capabilities for high-resolution data acquisition, the inferred information about kinetics and thermodynamics of the process and single defect dynamics and interactions is minima, due to the inherent limitations of manual ex-situ analysis of the collected volumes of data. To circumvent this problem, we developed a deep learning framework for dynamic STEM imaging that is trained to find the structures (defects) that break a crystal lattice periodicity and apply it for mapping solid state reactions and transformations in layered WS2 doped with Mo. This framework allows extracting thousands of lattice defects from raw STEM data (single images and movies) in a matter of seconds, which are then classified into different categories using unsupervised clustering methods. We further expanded our framework to extract parameters of diffusion for the sulfur vacancies and analyzed transition probabilities associated with switching between different configurations of defect complexes consisting of Mo dopant and sulfur vacancy, providing insight into point defect dynamics and reactions. This approach is universal and its application to beam induced reactions allows mapping chemical transformation pathways in solids at the atomic level.

In-line detection and reconstruction of multi-photon quantum states

Integrated single-photon detectors open new possibilities for monitoring inside quantum photonic circuits. We present a concept for the in-line measurement of spatially-encoded multi-photon quantum states, while keeping the transmitted ones undisturbed. We theoretically establish that by recording photon correlations from optimally positioned detectors on top of coupled waveguides with detuned propagation constants, one can perform robust reconstruction of the density matrix describing the amplitude, phase, coherence and quantum entanglement. We report proof-of-principle experiments using classical light, which emulates single-photon regime. Our method opens a pathway towards practical and fast in-line quantum measurements for diverse applications in quantum photonics.

Quantitative and functional post-translational modification proteomics reveals that TREPH1 plays a role in plant thigmomorphogenesis

Plants can sense both intracellular and extracellular mechanical forces and can respond through morphological changes. The signaling components responsible for mechanotransduction of the touch response are largely unknown. Here, we performed a high-throughput SILIA (stable isotope labeling in Arabidopsis)-based quantitative phosphoproteomics analysis to profile changes in protein phosphorylation resulting from 40 seconds of force stimulation in Arabidopsis thaliana. Of the 24 touch-responsive phosphopeptides identified, many were derived from kinases, phosphatases, cytoskeleton proteins, membrane proteins and ion transporters. TOUCH-REGULATED PHOSPHOPROTEIN1 (TREPH1) and MAP KINASE KINASE 2 (MKK2) and/or MKK1 became rapidly phosphorylated in touch-stimulated plants. Both TREPH1 and MKK2 are required for touch-induced delayed flowering, a major component of thigmomorphogenesis. The treph1-1 and mkk2 mutants also exhibited defects in touch-inducible gene expression. A non-phosphorylatable site-specific isoform of TREPH1 (S625A) failed to restore touch-induced flowering delay of treph1-1, indicating the necessity of S625 for TREPH1 function and providing evidence consistent with the possible functional relevance of the touch-regulated TREPH1 phosphorylation. Bioinformatic analysis and biochemical subcellular fractionation of TREPH1 protein indicate that it is a soluble protein. Altogether, these findings identify new protein players in Arabidopsis thigmomorphogenesis regulation, suggesting that protein phosphorylation may play a critical role in plant force responses.

Knowledge Graph Embedding with Entity Neighbors and Deep Memory Network

Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE) aims to represent entities and relations of knowledge graph in a low-dimensional continuous vector space. Recent works focus on incorporating structural knowledge with additional information, such as entity descriptions, relation paths and so on. However, common used additional information usually contains plenty of noise, which makes it hard to learn valuable representation. In this paper, we propose a new kind of additional information, called entity neighbors, which contain both semantic and topological features about given entity. We then develop a deep memory network model to encode information from neighbors. Employing a gating mechanism, representations of structure and neighbors are integrated into a joint representation. The experimental results show that our model outperforms existing KGE methods utilizing entity descriptions and achieves state-of-the-art metrics on 4 datasets.

Quantum metasurface for multi-photon interference and state reconstruction

Metasurfaces based on resonant nanophotonic structures have enabled novel types of flat-optics devices often outperforming the capabilities of bulk components, yet these advances remain largely unexplored for quantum applications. We show that non-classical multi-photon interferences can be achieved at the subwavelength scale in all-dielectric metasurfaces. We simultaneously image multiple projections of quantum states with a single metasurface, enabling a robust reconstruction of amplitude, phase, coherence, and entanglement of multi-photon polarization-encoded states. One- and two-photon states are reconstructed through nonlocal photon correlation measurements with polarization-insensitive click-detectors positioned after the metasurface, and the scalability to higher photon numbers is established theoretically. Our work illustrates the feasibility of ultra-thin quantum metadevices for the manipulation and measurement of multi-photon quantum states with applications in free-space quantum imaging and communications.
