An Augmented Nonlinear LMS for Digital Self-Interference Cancellation in Full-Duplex Direct-Conversion Transceivers

In future full-duplex communications, the cancellation of self-interference (SI) arising from hardware non-idealities will play an important role in the design of mobile-scale devices. To this end, we introduce an optimal digital SI cancellation solution for shared-antenna-based direct-conversion transceivers. To establish that the underlying widely linear signal model is not adequate for strong transmit signals, the impact of various circuit imperfections, including power amplifier (PA) distortion, frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance, quantization noise and thermal noise, on the performance of the conventional augmented least mean square (LMS) based SI canceller, is analyzed. In order to achieve a sufficient signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) when the nonlinear SI components are not negligible, we propose an augmented nonlinear LMS based SI canceller for a joint cancellation of both the linear and nonlinear SI components by virtue of a widely nonlinear model fit. A rigorous mean and mean square performance evaluation is conducted to justify the performance advantages of the proposed scheme over the conventional augmented LMS solution. Simulations on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless local area network (WLAN) standard compliant waveforms support the analysis.

Fe3O4@astragalus polysaccharide core-shell nanoparticles for iron deficiency anemia therapy and magnetic resonance imaging in vivo

Fe3O4@astragalus polysaccharide core-shell nanoparticles (Fe3O4@APS NPs) were demonstrated to be an efficient therapeutic drug for treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in vivo. The Fe3O4@APS NPs have been synthesized using a two steps approach involving hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent esterification. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies show that APS are attached on the surfaces of the highly monodisperse Fe3O4 NPs. Dynamic light scatting (DLS) and magnetic characterizations reveal that the Fe3O4@APS NPs have outstanding water solubility and stability. Cytotoxicity assessment using Hela cells and pathological tests in mice demonstrate their good biocompatibility and low toxicity. The IDA treatment in rats shows that they have efficient therapeutic effect, which is contributed to both the iron element supplement from Fe3O4 and the APS-stimulated hematopoietic cell generation. Moreover, the Fe3O4@APS NPs are superparamagnetic and thus able to be used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study has demonstrated the potential of nanocomposites involving purified natural products from Chinese herb medicine for biomedical applications.

An Improved Algorithm for Counting Graphical Degree Sequences

We present an improved version of a previous efficient algorithm that computes the number $D(n)$ of zero-free graphical degree sequences of length $n$. A main ingredient of the improvement lies in a more efficient way to compute the function $P(N,k,l,s)$ of Barnes and Savage. We further show that the algorithm can be easily adapted to compute the $D(i)$ values for all $i\le n$ in a single run. Theoretical analysis shows that the new algorithm to compute all $D(i)$ values for $i\le n$ is a constant times faster than the previous algorithm to compute a single $D(n)$. Experimental evaluations show that the constant of improvement is about 10. We also perform simulations to estimate the asymptotic order of $D(n)$ by generating uniform random samples from the set of $E(n)$ integer partitions of fixed length $n$ with even sum and largest part less than $n$ and computing the proportion of them that are graphical degree sequences. The known numerical results of $D(n)$ for $n\le 290$ together with the known bounds of $D(n)$ and simulation results allow us to make an informed guess about its unknown asymptotic order. The techniques for the improved algorithm can be applied to compute other similar functions that count the number of graphical degree sequences of various classes of graphs of order $n$ and that all involve the function $P(N,k,l,s)$.

Local fluctuations of vibrational polaritons monitored by two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy

We study the collective behavior of molecules placed in an infrared (IR) microcavity, incorporating the local fluctuations, i.e., dynamical disorder. The cooperative feature in vibrational polaritons is shown to be dynamically eroded, due to intermolecule coherence. To further resolve such process, we develop a two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) for molecules interacting with cavity modes. The cooperative feature in correspondence to the spectroscopic signal is specified. The results reveal the dark states by the cross peaks apart from the ones for polaritons, as a result of the breakdown of cooperativity between molecules. We further show that the breakdown of cooperativity profoundly connects to the localization of the vibrational excitations whereas the polariton modes are extended wave over several molecules. Besides, our work offers new physical insight for understanding the recent 2D-IR experiments where the interaction between dark modes and bright polaritons was evident.

Asymptotic properties of a stochastic Gilpin-Ayala model under regime switching

In this paper, a stochastic Gilpin-Ayala population model with regime switching and white noise is considered. All parameters are influenced by stochastic perturbations. The existence of global positive solution, asymptotic stability in probability, $p$th moment exponential stability, extinction, weak persistence, stochastic permanence and stationary distribution of the model are investigated, which generalize some results in the literatures. Moreover, the conditions presented for the stochastic permanence and the existence of stationary distribution improve the previous results.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement between Separated Atomic Ensembles

The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement is of special importance not only for fundamental research in quantum mechanics, but also for quantum information processing. Establishing EPR entanglement between two memory systems, such as atomic ensembles, nitrogen-vacancy centers, and rare-earth-ion-doped solids is promising for realizing spatial-multimode based quantum communication, quantum computation, and quantum imaging. To date, there have been few reports on realizing EPR entanglement between physical systems in true position and momentum. Here we describe successfully establishing such entanglement between two separated atomic ensembles by using quantum storage. We clearly prove the existence of EPR entanglement in position and momentum between two memories by demonstrating the satisfying of the inseparability criterion with the aid of quantum ghost-imaging and ghost-interference experiments.

An efficient algorithm to test forcibly-biconnectedness of graphical degree sequences

We present an algorithm to test whether a given graphical degree sequence is forcibly biconnected or not and prove its correctness. The worst case run time complexity of the algorithm is shown to be exponential but still much better than the previous basic algorithm presented in \cite{Wang2018}. We show through experimental evaluations that the algorithm is efficient on average. We also adapt Ruskey et al's classic algorithm to enumerate zero-free graphical degree sequences of length $n$ and Barnes and Savage's classic algorithm to enumerate graphical partitions of an even integer $n$ by incorporating our testing algorithm into theirs and then obtain some enumerative results about forcibly biconnected graphical degree sequences of given length $n$ and forcibly biconnected graphical partitions of given even integer $n$. Based on these enumerative results we make some conjectures such as: when $n$ is large, (1) the proportion of forcibly biconnected graphical degree sequences of length $n$ among all zero-free graphical degree sequences of length $n$ is asymptotically a constant between 0 and 1; (2) the proportion of forcibly biconnected graphical partitions of even $n$ among all forcibly connected graphical partitions of $n$ is asymptotically 0.

Probing anomalous $WWγ$ Triple Gauge Bosons Coupling at LHeC

The precision measurement of the $WWγ$ vertex at the future Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) at CERN is discussed in this paper. We propose to measure this vertex in the $e^{-} p\to e^{-}W^{\pm}j$ channel as a complement to the conventional charged current $ν_{e}γj$ channel. In addition to the cross section measurement, $χ^{2}$ method studies of angular variables provide powerful tools to probe the anomalous structure of triple gauge boson couplings. We study the distribution of the well-known azimuthal angle between the final state forward electron and jet in this vector-boson fusion (VBF) process. On the other hand, full reconstruction of leptonic $W$ decay opens a new opportunity to measure $W$ polarization that is also sensitive to the anomalous triple gauge boson couplings. Taking into consideration the superior determination of parton distribution functions~(PDFs) based on future LHeC data, the constraints of $λ_γ$ and $Δκ_γ$ might reach up to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$ level in the most ideal case with the 2--3~ab$^{-1}$ data set, which shows a potential advantage compared to those from LHC and LEP data.

M-estimation in high-dimensional linear model

We mainly study the M-estimation method for the high-dimensional linear regression model, and discuss the properties of M-estimator when the penalty term is the local linear approximation. In fact, M-estimation method is a framework, which covers the methods of the least absolute deviation, the quantile regression, least squares regression and Huber regression. We show that the proposed estimator possesses the good properties by applying certain assumptions. In the part of numerical simulation, we select the appropriate algorithm to show the good robustness of this method

Hadronic origin of prompt high-energy emission of gamma-ray bursts revisited: in the case of a limited maximum proton energy

The high-energy (> 100MeV) emission observed by Fermi-LAT during the prompt phase of some luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) could arise from the cascade induced by interactions between accelerated protons and the radiation field of GRBs. The photomeson process, which is usually suggested to operate in such a hadronic explanation, requires a rather high proton energy (> 10^17eV) for an efficient interaction. However, whether GRBs can accelerate protons to such a high energy is far from guaranteed, although they have been suggested as the candidate source for ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. In this work, we revisit the hadronic model for the prompt high-energy emission of GRBs with a smaller maximum proton energy than the usually adopted value estimated from the Bohm condition. In this case, the Bethe-Heitler pair production process becomes comparably important or even dominates over the photomeson process. We show that with a relatively low maximum proton energy with a Lorentz factor of 10^5 in the comoving frame, the cascade emission can still reproduce various types of high-energy spectrum of GRBs. For most GRBs without high-energy emission detected, the maximum proton energy could be even lower and relax the constraints on the parameters of GRB jet resulting from the fact of non-detection of GRB neutrinos by IceCube.

An efficient algorithm to test forcibly-connectedness of graphical degree sequences

We present an algorithm to test whether a given graphical degree sequence is forcibly connected or not and prove its correctness. We also outline the extensions of the algorithm to test whether a given graphical degree sequence is forcibly $k$-connected or not for every fixed $k\ge 2$. We show through experimental evaluations that the algorithm is efficient on average, though its worst case run time is probably exponential. We also adapt Ruskey et al's classic algorithm to enumerate zero-free graphical degree sequences of length $n$ and Barnes and Savage's classic algorithm to enumerate graphical partitions of even integer $n$ by incorporating our testing algorithm into theirs and then obtain some enumerative results about forcibly connected graphical degree sequences of given length $n$ and forcibly connected graphical partitions of given even integer $n$. Based on these enumerative results we make some conjectures such as: when $n$ is large, (1) almost all zero-free graphical degree sequences of length $n$ are forcibly connected; (2) almost none of the graphical partitions of even $n$ are forcibly connected.

Mapping mesoscopic phase evolution during e-beam induced transformations via deep learning of atomically resolved images

Understanding transformations under electron beam irradiation requires mapping the structural phases and their evolution in real time. To date, this has mostly been a manual endeavor comprising of difficult frame-by-frame analysis that is simultaneously tedious and prone to error. Here, we turn towards the use of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) to automatically determine the Bravais lattice symmetry present in atomically-resolved images. A DCNN is trained to identify the Bravais lattice class given a 2D fast Fourier transform of the input image. Monte-Carlo dropout is used for determining the prediction probability, and results are shown for both simulated and real atomically-resolved images from scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. A reduced representation of the final layer output allows to visualize the separation of classes in the DCNN and agrees with physical intuition. We then apply the trained network to electron beam-induced transformations in WS2, which allows tracking and determination of growth rate of voids. These results are novel in two ways: (1) It shows that DCNNs can be trained to recognize diffraction patterns, which is markedly different from the typical "real image" cases, and (2) it provides a method with in-built uncertainty quantification, allowing the real-time analysis of phases present in atomically resolved images.

Supermassive Black Holes with High Accretion Rates in Active Galactic Nuclei. IX 10 New Observations of Reverberation Mapping and Shortened H$β$ Lags

As one of the series of papers reporting on a large reverberation mapping campaign of super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we present the results of 10 SEAMBHs monitored spectroscopically during 2015-2017. Six of them are observed for the first time, and have generally higher 5100 Å luminosities than the SEAMBHs monitored in our campaign from 2012 to 2015; the remaining four are repeat observations to check if their previous lags change. Similar to the previous SEAMBHs, the H$β$ time lags of the newly observed objects are shorter than the values predicted by the canonical $R_{\mathrm{Hβ}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation of sub-Eddington AGNs, by factors of $\sim2-6$, depending on the accretion rate. The four previously observed objects have lags consistent with previous measurements. We provide linear regressions for the $R_{\mathrm{Hβ}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation, solely for the SEAMBH sample and for low-accretion AGNs. We find that the relative strength of Fe II and the profile of the H$β$ emission line can be used as proxies of accretion rate, showing that the shortening of H$β$ lags depends on accretion rates. The recent SDSS-RM discovery of shortened H$β$ lags in AGNs with low accretion rates provides compelling evidence for retrograde accretion onto the black hole. These evidences show that the canonical $R_{\mathrm{Hβ}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation holds only in AGNs with moderate accretion rates. At low accretion rates, it should be revised to include the effects of black hole spin, whereas the accretion rate itself becomes a key factor in the regime of high accretion rates.

Benchmarking Atomic Data for Astrophysics: Be-like Ions between B II and Ne VII

Large-scale self-consistent multiconfiguration Dirac--Hartree--Fock and relativistic configuration interaction calculations are reported for the $n \leq 6$ levels in Be-like ions from B II to Ne VII. Effects from electron correlation are taken into account by means of large expansions in terms of a basis of configuration state functions, and a complete and accurate data set of excitation energies, lifetimes, wavelengths, and electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole line strengths, transition rates, and oscillator strengths for these levels is provided for each ion. Comparisons are made with available experimental and theoretical results. The uncertainty of excitation energies is assessed to be 0.01\% on average, which makes it possible to find and rule out misidentifications and aid new line identifications involving high-lying levels in astrophysical spectra. The complete data set is also useful for modeling and diagnosing astrophysical plasmas.

Superconducting cosmic strings as sources of cosmological fast radio bursts

In this paper we calculate the radio burst signals from three kinds of structures of superconducting cosmic strings. By taking into account the observational factors including scattering and relativistic effects, we derive the event rate of radio bursts as a function of redshift with the theoretical parameters $Gμ$ and $\mathcal{I}$ of superconducting strings. Our analyses show that cusps and kinks may have noticeable contributions to the event rate and in most cases cusps would dominate the contribution, while the kink-kink collisions tend to have secondary effects. By fitting theoretical predictions with the normalized data of fast radio bursts, we for the first time constrain the parameter space of superconducting strings and report that the parameter space of $Gμ\sim [10^{-14}, 10^{-12}]$ and $\mathcal{I} \sim [10^{-1}, 10^{2}] ~ \rm{GeV}$ fit the observation well although the statistic significance is low due to the lack of observational data. Moreover, we derive two types of best fittings, with one being dominated by cusps with a redshift $z = 1.3$, and the other dominated by kinks at the range of the maximal event rate.

Tungsten disulfide-gold nanohole hybrid metasurfaces for nonlinear metalens in the visible region

Recently, nonlinear hybrid metasurface comes into an attractive new concept in the research of nanophotonics and nanotechnology. It is composed of semiconductors with an intrinsically large nonlinear susceptibility and traditional plasmonic metasurfaces, offering opportunities for efficiently generating and manipulating nonlinear optical responses. A high second-harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency has been demonstrated in the mid-infrared region by using multi-quantum-well (MQW) based plasmonic metasurfaces. However, it has yet to be demonstrated in the visible region. Here we present a new type of nonlinear hybrid metasurfaces for the visible region, which consists of a single layer of tungsten disulfide (WS2) and a phased gold nanohole array. The results indicate that a large SHG susceptibility of ~0.1 nm/V at 810 nm is achieved, which is 2~3 orders of magnitude larger than that of typical plasmonic metasurfaces. Nonlinear metalenses with the focal lengths of 30 μm, 50 μm and 100 μm are demonstrated experimentally, providing a direct evidence for both generating and manipulating SH signals based on the nonlinear hybrid metasurfaces. It shows great potential applications in designing of integrated, ultra-thin, compacted and efficient nonlinear optical devices, such as frequency converters, nonlinear holography and generation of nonlinear optical vortex beam.

Smart Guiding Glasses for Visually Impaired People in Indoor Environment

To overcome the travelling difficulty for the visually impaired group, this paper presents a novel ETA (Electronic Travel Aids)-smart guiding device in the shape of a pair of eyeglasses for giving these people guidance efficiently and safely. Different from existing works, a novel multi sensor fusion based obstacle avoiding algorithm is proposed, which utilizes both the depth sensor and ultrasonic sensor to solve the problems of detecting small obstacles, and transparent obstacles, e.g. the French door. For totally blind people, three kinds of auditory cues were developed to inform the direction where they can go ahead. Whereas for weak sighted people, visual enhancement which leverages the AR (Augment Reality) technique and integrates the traversable direction is adopted. The prototype consisting of a pair of display glasses and several low cost sensors is developed, and its efficiency and accuracy were tested by a number of users. The experimental results show that the smart guiding glasses can effectively improve the user's travelling experience in complicated indoor environment. Thus it serves as a consumer device for helping the visually impaired people to travel safely.

High conduction hopping behavior induced in transition metal dichalcogenides by percolating defect networks: toward atomically thin circuits

Atomically thin circuits have recently been explored for applications in next-generation electronics and optoelectronics and have been demonstrated with two-dimensional lateral heterojunctions. In order to form true 2D circuitry from a single material, electronic properties must be spatially tunable. Here, we report tunable transport behavior which was introduced into single layer tungsten diselenide and tungsten disulfide by focused He$^+$ irradiation. Pseudo-metallic behavior was induced by irradiating the materials with a dose of ~1x10$^{16} He^+/cm^2$ to introduce defect states, and subsequent temperature-dependent transport measurements suggest a nearest neighbor hopping mechanism is operative. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy reveal that Se is sputtered preferentially, and extended percolating networks of edge states form within WSe$_2$ at a critical dose of 1x10$^{16} He^+/cm^2$. First-principles calculations confirm the semiconductor-to-metallic transition of WSe$_2$ after pore and edge defects were introduced by He$^+$ irradiation. The hopping conduction was utilized to direct-write resistor loaded logic circuits in WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$ with a voltage gain of greater than 5. Edge contacted thin film transistors were also fabricated with a high on/off ratio (> 10$^6$), demonstrating potential for the formation of atomically thin circuits.
