$d$-dimensional spherical ferromagnets in random fields: Metastates, continuous symmetry breaking, and spin-glass features

We study the large-volume behavior of the spherical model for $d$-dimensional local spins, in the presence of $d$-dimensional random fields, for $d\geq 2$. We compare two models, one with volume-scaled random fields, and another one with non-scaled random fields, on the level of Aizenman-Wehr metastates, Newman-Stein metastates, as well as overlap distributions. We show that in $d\geq 2$ the metastates are fully supported on a continuity of random product states, with weights which we describe, for both models. For the non-scaled random fields, the set of a.s. cluster points of Gibbs measures contains these product states, but behaves differently in the 'recurrent' spin dimension $d=2$ where it also contains non-trivial mixtures of tilted measures. For the scaled model, moreover the overlap distribution displays spin-glass characteristics, as it is non-self averaging, and shows replica symmetry breaking, although it is ultrametric if and only if $d=1$. For $d\geq 2$ it oscillates chaotically on a set of continuous distributions for large volumes, while the limiting set contains only discrete distributions in $d=1$. Our results are based on concentration estimates, analysis of Gibbs measures in finite but large volumes, and the asymptotics of $d$-dimensional random walks and their spherical projections.

Joint Visible Light and RF Backscatter Communications for Ambient IoT Network: Fundamentals, Applications, and Opportunities

The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks raises significant sustainability and scalability challenges due to energy consumption, deployment complexity, and environmental impact. Ambient IoT (A-IoT), leveraging ambient energy harvesting (EH) for batteryless device operation, has emerged as a promising solution to address these challenges. Among various EH and communication techniques, visible light communication (VLC) integrated with ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) offers remarkable advantages, including energy neutrality, high reliability, and enhanced security. In this article, we propose a joint VLC-AmBC architecture, emphasizing fundamental concepts, system designs, and practical implementations. We explore potential applications in environmental monitoring, healthcare, smart logistics, and secure communications. We present proof-of-concept demonstrations for three distinct types of ambient backscatter devices (AmBDs): EH-Only, VLC-Relay, and VLC-Control. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of implementing joint VLC-AmBC systems, highlighting their practical viability across various deployment scenarios. Finally, we outline future research directions, including integrated sensing and communication, as well as optimized energy-efficient deployment. Open issues, such as large-scale deployment challenges, are also discussed, thereby providing a clear roadmap for future developments in joint VLC-AmBC-enabled A-IoT ecosystems.

Effective Dynamics for Weakly Interacting Bosons in an Iterated High-Density Thermodynamic Limit

We study the time evolution of weakly interacting Bose gases on a three-dimensional torus of arbitrary volume. The coupling constant is supposed to be inversely proportional to the density, which is considered to be large and independent of the particle number. We take into account a class of initial states exhibiting quasi-complete Bose-Einstein condensation. For each fixed time in a finite interval, we prove the convergence of the one-particle reduced density matrix towards the projection onto the normalised order parameter describing the condensate - evolving according to the Hartree equation - in the iterated limit where the volume (and therefore the particle number), and subsequently the density go to infinity. The rate of convergence depends only on the density and on the decay of both the expected number of particles and the energy of the initial quasi-vacuum state.

Infinite volume Gibbs states of the generalized mean-field orthoplicial model

The generalized mean-field orthoplicial model is a mean-field model on a space of continuous spins on $\mathbb{R}^n$ that are constrained to a scaled $(n-1)$-dimensional $\ell_1$-sphere, equivalently a scaled $(n-1)$-dimensional orthoplex, and interact through a general interaction function. The finite volume Gibbs states of this model correspond to singular probability measures. In this paper, we use probabilistic methods to rigorously classify the infinite volume Gibbs states of this model, and we show that they are convex combinations of product states. The predominant methods utilize the theory of large deviations, relative entropy, and equivalence of ensembles, and the key technical tools utilize exact integral representations of certain partition functions and locally uniform estimates of expectations of certain local observables.

Infinite volume Gibbs states and metastates of the random field mean-field spherical model

For the discrete random field Curie-Weiss models, the infinite volume Gibbs states and metastates have been investigated and determined for specific instances of random external fields. In general, there are not many examples in the literature of non-trivial limiting metastates for discrete or continuous spin systems. We analyze the infinite volume Gibbs states of the mean-field spherical model, a model of continuous spins, in a general random external field with independent identically distributed components with finite moments of some order larger than four and non-vanishing variances of the second moments. Depending on the parameters of the model, we show that there exist three distinct phases: ordered ferromagnetic, ordered paramagnetic, and spin glass. In the ordered ferromagnetic and ordered paramagnetic phases, we show that there exists a unique infinite volume Gibbs state almost surely. In the spin glass phase, we show the existence of chaotic size dependence, provide a construction of the Aizenman-Wehr metastate, and consider both the convergence in distribution and almost sure convergence of the Newman-Stein metastates. The limiting metastates are non-trivial and their structure is universal due to the presence of Gaussian fluctuations and the spherical constraint.

Estimation of local microcanonical averages in two lattice mean-field models using coupling techniques

We consider an application of probabilistic coupling techniques which provides explicit estimates for comparison of local expectation values between label permutation invariant states, for instance, between certain microcanonical, canonical, and grand canonical ensemble expectations. A particular goal is to obtain good bounds for how such errors will decay with increasing system size. As explicit examples, we focus on two well-studied mean-field models: the discrete model of a paramagnet and the mean-field spherical model of a continuum field, both of which are related to the Curie-Weiss model. The proof is based on a construction of suitable probabilistic couplings between the relevant states, using Wasserstein fluctuation distance to control the difference between the expectations in the thermodynamic limit.

Atomic layer deposited second order nonlinear optical metamaterial for back-end integration with CMOS-compatible nanophotonic circuitry

We report the fabrication of artificial unidimensional crystals exhibiting an effective bulk second-order nonlinearity. The crystals are created by cycling atomic layer deposition of three dielectric materials such that the resulting metamaterial is non-centrosymmetric in the direction of the deposition. Characterization of the structures by second-harmonic generation Maker-fringe measurements shows that the main component of their nonlinear susceptibility tensor is about 5 pm/V which is comparable to well-established materials and more than an order of magnitude greater than reported for a similar crystal [1-Alloatti et al, arXiv:1504.00101[cond-mat.mtrl- sci]]. Our demonstration opens new possibilities for second-order nonlinear effects on CMOS-compatible nanophotonic platforms.
