Epitaxial strain effects on magnetic ordering and spin-phonon couplings in the (SrMnO$_3$)$_1$/(LaMnO$_3$)$_1$ superlattice from first principles

We have studied the influence of epitaxial strain on magnetic orderings and the couplings between the spin and polar phonons in the 1:1 SrMnO$_3$/LaMnO$_3$ superlattice from first principles. Magnetic phase transitions of the superlattice induced by epitaxial strain are observed, consistent with previous reports. We find that oxygen octahedral rotations lower the ground state energy but do not destroy the magnetic phase transitions induced by strain. We compute zone center phonon frequencies and eigenvectors as functions of epitaxial strain and magnetic ordering. A substantial increase of the coupling strength between the spin and the lowest-frequency polar mode is observed for tensile strains. This increase can be attributed to a change of character of the lowest mode resulting from different relative couplings of the various polar modes to epitaxial strain. Finally, spin-phonon coupling strengths are computed in a Heisenberg formalism. This analysis directly reveals the changes in exchange couplings due to specific atomic displacements or phonon modes, as well as the nonequivalence of the out-of-plane exchange couplings across LaO layers and across SrO layers, the latter being the result of the artificial structuring in the superlattice.

Orthorhombic $ABC$ semiconductors as antiferroelectrics

We use a first-principles rational-design approach to identify a previously-unrecognized class of antiferroelectric materials in the $Pnma$ MgSrSi structure type. The MgSrSi structure type can be described in terms of antipolar distortions of the nonpolar $P6_{3}/mmc$ ZrBeSi structure type, and we find many members of this structure type are close in energy to the related polar $P6_{3}mc$ LiGaGe structure type, which includes many members we predict to be ferroelectric. We highlight known $ABC$ combinations in which this energy difference is comparable to the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric switching barrier of PbZrO$_{3}$. We calculate structural parameters and relative energies for all three structure types, both for reported and as-yet hypothetical representatives of this class. Our results provide guidance for the experimental realization and further investigation of high-performance materials suitable for practical applications.

Integration of first-principles methods and crystallographic database searches for new ferroelectrics: Strategies and explorations

In this concept paper, the development of strategies for the integration of first-principles methods with crystallographic database mining for the discovery and design of novel ferroelectric materials is discussed, drawing on the results and experience derived from exploratory investigations on three different systems: (1) the double perovskite Sr(Sb$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$)O$_3$ as a candidate semiconducting ferroelectric; (2) polar derivatives of schafarzikite $M$Sb$_2$O$_4$; and (3) ferroelectric semiconductors with formula $M_2$P$_2$(S,Se)$_6$. A variety of avenues for further research and investigation are suggested, including automated structure type classification, low-symmetry improper ferroelectrics, and high-throughput first-principles searches for additional representatives of structural families with desirable functional properties.

Half-Heusler semiconductors as piezoelectrics

One of the central challenges in materials science is the design of functional and multifunctional materials, in which large responses are produced by applied fields and stresses. A rapidly developing paradigm for the rational design of such materials is based on the first-principles study of a large materials family, the perovskite oxides being the prototypical case. Specifically, first-principles calculations of structure and properties are used to explore the microscopic origins of the functional properties of interest and to search a large space of equilibrium and metastable phases to identify promising candidate systems. In this paper, we use a first-principles rational-design approach to demonstrate semiconducting half-Heusler compounds as a previously-unrecognized class of piezoelectric materials, and to provide guidance for the experimental realization and further investigation of high-performance materials suitable for practical applications.

Interplay of epitaxial strain and rotations in PbTiO$_3$/PbZrO$_3$ superlattices from first principles

We present first-principles calculations of the structural phase behavior of the [1:1] \pzta\ superlattice and the \ptoa\ and \pzoa\ parent compounds as a function of in-plane epitaxial strain. A symmetry analysis is used to identify the phases and clarify how they arise from an interplay between different kinds of structural distortions, including out-of-plane and in-plane polar modes, rotation of oxygen octahedra around out-of-plane or in-plane axes, and an anti-polar mode. Symmetry-allowed intermode couplings are identified and used to elucidate the nature of the observed phase transitions. For the minimum-period [1:1] \pzta\ superlattice, we identify a sequence of three transitions that occur as the in-plane lattice constant is increased. All four of the phases involve substantial oxygen octahedral rotations, and an antipolar distortion is important in the high-tensile-strain phase. Inclusion of these distortions is found to be crucial for an accurate determination of the phase boundaries.

Large spin-phonon coupling and magnetically-induced phonon anisotropy in Sr$M$O$_3$ perovskites ($M$=V,Cr,Mn,Fe,Co)

First-principles calculations reveal large zone-center spin-phonon coupling and magnetically-driven phonon anisotropy in cubic perovskites Sr$M$O$_3$ ($M$=V,Cr,Mn,Fe,Co). In particular, the frequency and splitting of the polar Slater mode is found to depend strongly on magnetic ordering. The coupling is parameterized in a crystal-structure-dependent Heisenberg model and its main features seen to arise from the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. This coupling can be expected to produce distinct low-energy alternative phases, resulting in a rich variety of coupled magnetic, structural and electronic phase transitions driven by temperature, stress, electric field and cation substitution.

Coupled magnetic-ferroelectric metal-insulator transitions in epitaxially-strained SrCoO$_{3}$ from first principles

First-principles calculations of the epitaxial-strain phase diagram of perovskite SrCoO$_{3}$ are presented. Through combination of the large spin-phonon coupling with polarization-strain coupling and coupling of the band gap to the polar distortion, both tensile and compressive epitaxial strain are seen to drive the bulk ferromagnetic-metallic (FM-M) phase to antiferromagnetic-insulating-ferroelectric (AFM-I-FE) phases, the latter having unusually low elastic energy. At these coupled magnetic-ferroelectric metal-insulator phase boundaries, cross responses to applied electric and magnetic fields and stresses are expected. In particular, a magnetic field or compressive uniaxial stress applied to the AFM phases could induce an insulator-metal transition, and an electric field applied to the FM-M phase could induce a metal-insulator transition.

Interface enhancement of ferroelectricity in CaTiO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$ superlattices

We carry out first-principles calculations for CaTiO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$ superlattices with epitaxial strain corresponding to growth on a SrTiO$_3$ substrate, and consider octahedral rotations as well as ferroelectric distortions. The calculations are done as a function of electric displacement field, and both a macroscopic and a local electrostatic analysis are carried out. We find that strong octahedral rotations occur for TiO$_6$ octahedra sandwiched between CaO layers on both sides, but are strongly suppressed if either neighboring layer is a BaO layer. Due to the resulting enhancement of the ferroelectric instability in the BaO-neighboring octahedra, we find that overall the ferroelectric instability of the superlattice is enhanced by the interface. Thus, short-period superlattices in this system have a larger ferroelectric polarization than longer-period ones of the same average composition, contrary to the expected trend.

Epitaxial-strain-induced multiferroicity in SrMnO$_{3}$ from first principles

First-principles density-functional calculations reveal a large spin-phonon coupling in cubic SrMnO$_{3}$, with ferromagnetic ordering producing a polar instability. Through combination of this coupling with the strain-polarization coupling characteristic of perovskites, the bulk antiferromagnetic paraelectric ground state of SrMnO$_3$ is shown to be driven to a previously unreported multiferroic ferroelectric-ferromagnetic state by increasing epitaxial strain, both tensile and compressive. This state has a computed polarization and estimated Curie temperature above 54 $μ$C/cm$^2$ and 92 K. Large mixed magnetic-electric-elastic responses are predicted in the vicinity of the phase boundaries.

Enhancing piezoelectricity through polarization-strain coupling in ferroelectric superlattices

Short period ferroelectric/ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO)/PbTiO3 (PTO) superlattices are studied using density functional theory. Contrary to the trends in paraelectric/ferroelectric superlattices the polarization remains nearly constant for PTO concentrations below 50%. In addition, a significant decrease in the c/a ratio below the PTO values were observed. Using a superlattice effective Hamiltonian we predict an enhancement in the d33 piezoelectric coefficient peaking at ~75% PTO concentration due to the different polarization-strain coupling in PTO and BTO layers. Further analysis reveals that these trends are bulk properties which are a consequence of the reduced $P$ brought about by the polarization saturation in the BTO layers.

Ideal barriers to polarization reversal and domain-wall motion in strained ferroelectric thin films

The ideal intrinsic barriers to domain switching in c-phase PbTiO_3 (PTO), PbZrO_3 (PZO), and PbZr_{1-x}Ti_xO_3 (PZT) are investigated via first-principles computational methods. The effects of epitaxial strain on the atomic structure, ferroelectric response, barrier to coherent domain reversal, domain-wall energy, and barrier to domain-wall translation are studied. It is found that PTO has a larger polarization, but smaller energy barrier to domain reversal, than PZO. Consequentially the idealized coercive field is over two times smaller in PTO than PZO. The Ti--O bond length is more sensitive to strain than the other bonds in the crystals. This results in the polarization and domain-wall energy in PTO having greater sensitivity to strain than in PZO. Two ordered phases of PZT are considered, the rock-salt structure and a (100) PTO/PZO superlattice. In these simple structures we find that the ferroelectric properties do not obey Vergard's law, but instead can be approximated as an average over individual 5-atom unit cells.

Predicting polarization and nonlinear dielectric response of arbitrary perovskite superlattice sequences

We carry out first-principles calculations of the nonlinear dielectric response of short-period ferroelectric superlattices. We compute and store not only the total polarization, but also the Wannier-based polarizations of individual atomic layers, as a function of electric displacement field, and use this information to construct a model capable of predicting the nonlinear dielectric response of an arbitrary superlattice sequence. We demonstrate the successful application of our approach to superlattices composed of SrTiO$_3$, CaTiO$_3$, and BaTiO$_3$ layers.

Lattice instabilities in cubic pyrochlore Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The oxide pyrochlore Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is in some ways analogous to perovskite PbTiO$_3$, in that Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has two cations, Bi$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ in oxidation states that are normally associated with a propensity to off-center. However, unlike PbTiO$_3$, Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is experimentally observed to remain cubic down to 2 K, while the only observed ionic displacements are local and incoherent. Here we report first-principles calculations of the zone-center phonons of the ordered cubic pyrochlore which reveal several lattice instabilities. An analysis of the structural energetics suggest that the ordered cubic pyrochlore is unstable with respect to distortion towards a ferroelectric ground state with a large polarization. Our results suggest a key role of a frustrated soft polar mode in the dielectric properties of bismuth pyrochlores.

Polarization Enhancement in Short Period Superlattices via Interfacial Intermixing

The effect of intermixing at the interface of short period PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices is studied using first-principles density functional theory. The results indicate that interfacial intermixing significantly enhances the polarization within the superlattice. This enhancement is directly related to the off-centering of Pb and Sr cations and can be explained through a discussion of interacting dipoles. This picture should be general for a wide range of multicomponent superlattices and may have important consequences for the design of ferroelectric devices.

Suppressed dependence of polarization on epitaxial strain in highly polar ferroelectrics

A combined experimental and computational investigation of coupling between polarization and epitaxial strain in highly polar ferroelectric PbZr_0.2Ti_0.8O_3 (PZT) thin films is reported. A comparison of the properties of relaxed (tetragonality c/a = 1.05) and highly-strained (c/a = 1.09) epitaxial films shows that polarization, while being amongst the highest reported for PZT or PbTiO_3 in either film or bulk forms (P_r = 82 microC/cm^2), is almost independent of the epitaxial strain. We attribute this behavior to a suppressed sensitivity of the A-site cations to epitaxial strain in these Pb-based perovskites, where the ferroelectric displacements are already large, contrary to the case of less polar perovskites, such as BaTiO_3. In the latter case, the A-site cation (Ba) and equatorial oxygen displacements can lead to substantial polarization increases.

Nanoscale Smoothing and the Analysis of Interfacial Charge and Dipolar Densities

The interface properties of interest in multilayers include interfacial charge densities, dipole densities, band offsets, and screening-lengths, among others. Most such properties are inaccesible to direct measurements, but are key to understanding the physics of the multilayers. They are contained within first-principles electronic structure computations but are buried within the vast amount of quantitative information those computations generate. Thus far, they have been extracted from the numerical data by heuristic nanosmoothing procedures which do not necessarily provide results independent of the smoothing process. In the present paper we develop the theory of nanosmoothing, establishing procedures for both unpolarized and polarized systems which yield interfacial charge and dipole densities and band offsets invariant to the details of the smoothing procedures when the criteria we have established are met. We show also that dipolar charge densities, i. e. the densities of charge transferred across the interface, and screening lengths are not invariant. We illustrate our procedure with a toy model in which real, transversely averaged charge densities are replaced by sums of Gaussians.

Wannier-based definition of layer polarizations in perovskite superlattices

In insulators, the method of Marzari and Vanderbilt [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 56}, 12847 (1997)] can be used to generate maximally localized Wannier functions whose centers are related to the electronic polarization. In the case of layered insulators, this approach can be adapted to provide a natural definition of the local polarization associated with each layer, based on the locations of the nuclear charges and one-dimensional Wannier centers comprising each layer. Here, we use this approach to compute and analyze layer polarizations of ferroelectric perovskite superlattices, including changes in layer polarizations induced by sublattice displacements (i.e., layer-decomposed Born effective charges) and local symmetry breaking at the interfaces. The method provides a powerful tool for analyzing the polarization-related properties of complex layered oxide systems.
