Analytic construction of dimension-dependent steering witnesses from generalized equiangular measurements

We construct a dimension-dependent family of generalized equiangular measurements that gives explicit steering witnesses in every prime dimension $d\geq5$. The construction consists of $d-1$ mutually unbiased measurements and an additional normalized family of $2d-1$ Hermitian operators depending on a parameter $τ$. Positivity of the latter family is the main technical problem. We show that the noncentral operators reduce to three-dimensional invariant blocks, while the remaining central operator is exactly solvable in a two-dimensional subspace. Two unitarily equivalent $3\times3$ matrix representations describe the same active spectrum, but yield different Gershgorin enclosures because Gershgorin bounds are basis dependent. Combining the stronger endpoint from each representation gives a fully analytic asymmetric interval for $τ$ that guarantees a valid POVM. Combining this POVM with the $d-1$ MUMs yields an explicit GEAM. Finally, using a maximally entangled realization and the local-hidden-state bound previously derived for generalized equiangular measurements, we obtain an explicit steering inequality and a sufficient criterion guaranteeing quantum violation in every prime dimension $d\geq5$.

Families of $k$-positive maps and Schmidt number witnesses from generalized equiangular measurements

Quantum entanglement is an important resource in many modern technologies, like quantum computation or quantum communication and information processing. Therefore, most interest is given to detect and quantify entangled states. Entanglement degree of bipartite mixed quantum states can be measured using the Schmidt number. Witnesses of the Schmidt number are closely related to $k$-positive linear maps, for which there is no general construction. Here, we use the generalized equiangular measurements to define a family of $k$-positive linear maps and the corresponding Schmidt number witnesses. We present examples of witnesses that detect two-parameter entangled states with Schmidt number $k+1$ in any dimension. Our approach allows for a more efficient entanglement quantification than other known Schmidt number witnesses constructed from symmetric measurement operators.

Equiangular weighted frames and conical 2-designs with unequal traces

Conical 2-designs are families of positive operators possessing crucial symmetry properties that allow them to efficiently characterize important quantum measures. However, little is known about their general structures and properties. We propose a construction method of conical 2-designs whose elements are not of equal traces, based on a generalization of equiangular weighted frames to non-projective operators. We provide a detailed analysis of their properties, relations to quantum measurements, and applications, together with examples that go beyond the known classes. This constitutes a major step toward a full characterization of informationally overcomplete quantum measurements.

Equivalence relations between conical 2-designs and mutually unbiased generalized equiangular tight frames

Quantum measurements play a fundamental role in quantum information. Therefore, increasing efforts are being made to construct symmetric measurement operators for qudit systems. A wide class of projective measurements corresponds to complex projective 2-designs, which include symmetric, informationally complete (SIC) POVMs and mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). In this paper, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between conical 2-designs and mutually unbiased generalized equiangular tight frames, both of which are common generalizations of SIC POVMs and MUBs to operators of arbitrary rank. It turns out that there exist rich families of operators that belong to only one of those two classes. This raises important questions about which symmetries have to be preserved for applicational prominence.

Entanglement witnesses and separability criteria based on generalized equiangular tight frames

We use operators from generalized equiangular measurements to construct positive maps. Their positivity follows from the inequality for indices of coincidence corresponding to few equiangular tight frames. These maps give rise to entanglement witnesses, which include as special cases many important classes considered in the literature. Additionally, we introduce separability criteria based on the correlation matrix and analyze them for various types of measurements.

Measures from conical 2-designs depend only on two constants

Quantum measurements are important tools in quantum information, represented by positive, operator-valued measures. A wide class of symmetric measurements is given via generalized equiangular measurements that form conical 2-designs. We show that only two positive constants are needed to fully characterize a variety of important quantum measures constructed from such operators. Examples are given for entropic uncertainty relations, the Brukner-Zeilinger invariants, quantum coherence, quantum concurrence, and the Schmidt-number criterion for entanglement detection.

Violation of steering inequality for generalized equiangular measurements

In this article, we study bipartite quantum steering using a general class of measurement operators known as the generalized equiangular measurement (GEAM). Our approach allows for the construction of steering inequalities that are applicable not only to informationally complete measurements but also to incomplete or lossy scenarios, where the resulting quantum assemblages may be subnormalized. We develop a method to analytically bound the value of steering functionals under local hidden state (LHS) models by employing a generalized inequality for the eigenvalues of positive semidefinite operators, extending classical results such as the Samuelson inequality. This yields universal upper bounds on the LHS value in terms of the parameters defining the frame. Furthermore, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of these bounds in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces and demonstrate the possibility of unbounded quantum violations of steering inequalities. Our formalism encompasses previously known results for mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) and mutually unbiased measurements (MUMs) as special cases, showing that these are particular instances within a unified and more general framework.

Controlling nonlocality of bipartite qubit states via quantum channels

In this paper, we analyze quantum channels derived from a class of two-qubit states known as the X states. In particular, we consider X states that break the Bell's CHSH condition and then characterize the associated inverse Choi-Jamiolkowski maps, which we call nonlocality generating. Interestingly, the region corresponding to nonlocality generating channels shrinks as their stationary state departs from the maximally mixed state. Finally, we demonstrate special cases, where nonlocality can be fully characterized via as little as a single parameter. This approach significantly simplifies the analysis of nonlocality for the X states.

Decomposable dynamics on matrix algebras

We explore a notion of decomposably divisible (D-divisible) quantum evolution families, recently introduced in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 56, 485202 (2023). Both necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for highly-symmetric qubit and qudit dynamical maps. Through a restructurization of the evolution generators, we encode the decomposable divisibility into the positivity of time-dependent coefficients that multiply generators of D-divisible dynamical maps. This provides an analogy to the CP-divisibility property, which is equivalent to the positivity of decoherence rates that multiply Markovian semigroup generators.

Informationally overcomplete measurements from generalized equiangular tight frames

Informationally overcomplete measurements find important applications in quantum tomography and quantum state estimation. The most popular are maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases, for which trace relations between measurement operators are well known. In this paper, we introduce a more general class of informationally overcomplete POVMs that are generated by equiangular tight frames of arbitrary rank. This class provides a generalization of equiangular measurements to non-projective POVMs, which include rescaled mutually unbiased measurements and bases. We provide a method of their construction, analyze their symmetry properties, and provide examples for highly symmetric cases. In particular, we find a wide class of generalized equiangular measurements that are conical 2-designs, which allows us to derive the index of coincidence. Our results show benefits of considering a single informationally overcomplete measurement over informationally complete collections of POVMs.

How much symmetry do symmetric measurements need for efficient operational applications?

We introduce a generalization of symmetric measurements to collections of unequinumerous positive, operator-valued measures (POVMs). For informationally complete sets, we propose construction methods from orthonormal Hermitian operator bases. The correspondence between operator bases and measurements can be as high as four-to-four, with a one-to-one correspondence following only under additional assumptions. Importantly, it turns out that some of the symmetry properties, lost in the process of generalization, can be recovered without fixing the same number of elements for all POVMs. In particular, for a wide class of unequinumerous symmetric measurements that are conical 2-designs, we derive the index of coincidence, entropic uncertainty relations, and separability criteria for bipartite quantum states.

Non-Markovian quantum dynamics from symmetric measurements

We use symmetric measurement operators to construct quantum channels that provide a further generalization of generalized Pauli channels. The resulting maps are bistochastic but in general no longer mixed unitary. We analyze their important properties, such as complete positivity and the ability to break quantum entanglement. In the main part, we consider the corresponding open quantum systems dynamics with time-local generators. From divisibility properties of dynamical maps, we derive sufficient Markovianity and non-Markovianity conditions. As instructive examples, we present the generators of P-divisible generalized Pauli dynamical maps that allow for more negativity in the decoherence rates.

Improving classical capacity of qubit dynamical maps through stationary state manipulation

We analyze the evolution of Holevo and entanglement-assisted classical capacities for a special class of phase-covariant channels. In particular, we show that these capacities can be improved by changing the stationary state of the channel, which is closely related to its non-unitality degree. The more non-unital the channel, the greater its capacity. The channel parameters are engineered through mixtures on the level of dynamical maps, time-local generators, and memory kernels, for which we propose construction methods. For highly non-unital maps, we achieve a temporary increase in the classical capacity that exceeds the entanglement-assisted classical capacity of the unital map. This shows that non-unitality can become a better quantum resource for information transition purposes than quantum entanglement.

Enhancing phase-covariant channel performance with non-unitality

We analyze quantum communication properties of phase-covariant channels depending on their degree of non-unitality. In particular, we derive analytical formulas for minimal and maximal channel fidelity on pure states and maximal output purity. Next, we introduce a measure of non-unitality and show how to manipulate between unital and maximally non-unital maps by considering classical mixtures of quantum channels. Finally, we prove that maximal fidelity and maximal output purity increase with non-unitality and present several examples. Interestingly, non-unitality can also prolong quantum entanglement and lead to its rebirth.

Geometry of phase-covariant qubit channels

We analyze the geometry on the space of non-unital phase-covariant qubit maps. Using the corresponding Choi-Jamiołkowski states, we derive the Hilbert-Schmidt line and volume elements using the channel eigenvalues together with the parameter that characterizes non-unitality. We find the shapes and analytically compute the volumes of phase-covariant channels, in particular entanglement breaking and obtainable with time-local generators.

Phase-covariant mixtures of non-unital qubit maps

We analyze convex combinations of non-unital qubit maps that are phase-covariant. In particular, we consider the behavior of maps that combine amplitude damping, inverse amplitude damping, and pure dephasing. We show that mixing non-unital channels can result in restoring the unitality, whereas mixing commutative maps can lead to non-commutativity. For the convex combinations of Markovian semigroups, we prove that classical uncertainties cannot break quantum Markovianity. Moreover, contrary to the Pauli channel case, the semigroup can be recovered only by mixing two other semigroups.

All classes of informationally complete symmetric measurements in finite dimensions

A broad class of informationally complete symmetric measurements is introduced. It can be understood as a common generalization of symmetric, informationally complete POVMs and mutually unbiased bases. Additionally, it provides a natural way to define two new families of mutually unbiased symmetric measurement operators in any finite dimension. We show a general method of their construction, together with an example of an optimal measurement. Finally, we analyze the properties of symmetric measurements and provide applications in entropic relations and entanglement detection.

Indecomposable entanglement witnesses from symmetric measurements

We propose a family of positive maps constructed from a recently introduced class of symmetric measurements. These maps are used to define entanglement witnesses, which include other popular approaches with mutually unbiased bases and mutually unbiased measurements. A particular interest is given to indecomposable witnesses that can be used to detect entanglement of quantum states with positive partial transposition. We present several examples for different number of measurements.
