Development of a Si/CdTe semiconductor Compton telescope

We are developing a Compton telescope based on high resolution Si and CdTe imaging devices in order to obtain a high sensitivity astrophysical observation in sub-MeV gamma-ray region. In this paper, recent results from the prototype Si/CdTe semiconductor Compton telescope are reported. The Compton telescope consists of a double-sided Si strip detector (DSSD) and CdTe pixel detectors, combined with low noise analog LSI, VA32TA. With this detector, we obtained Compton reconstructed images and spectra from line gamma-rays ranging from 81 keV up to 356 keV. The energy resolution is 3.8 keV and 7.9 keV at 122 keV and 356 keV, respectively, and the angular resolution is 9.9 degrees and 5.7 degrees at 122 keV and 356 keV, respectively.

Gamma-ray Polarimetry with Compton Telescope

Compton telescope is a promising technology to achieve very high sensitivity in the soft gamma-ray band (0.1-10 MeV) by utilizing Compton kinematics. Compton kinematics also enables polarization measurement which will open new windows to study gamma-ray production mechanism in the universe. CdTe and Si semiconductor technologies are key technologies to realize the Compton telescope in which their high energy resolution is crucial for high angular resolution and background rejection capability. We have assembled a prototype module using a double-sided silicon strip detector and CdTe pixel detectors. In this paper, we present expected polarization performance of a proposed mission (NeXT/SGD). We also report results from polarization measurements using polarized synchrotron light and validation of EGS4 MC simulation.

Single Photon Counting X-ray Imaging with Si and CdTe Single Chip Pixel Detectors and Multichip Pixel Modules

Multichip modules (MCM) with 4 single photon counting MPEC 2.3 chips bump bonded to 1.3 cm x 1.3 cm large CdTe and Si semiconductor sensors as well as to single chip pixel detectors have been successfully built and operated. The MPEC 2.3 chip provides a pixel count rate up to 1 MHz with a large dynamic range of 18 bit, 2 counters and energy windowing with continuously adjustable thresholds. Each MPEC has 32 x 32 pixels of 200 um x 200 um pixel size. For a MCM the 4 chips are arranged in a 2 x 2 array which leads to a 64 x 64 sensor pixel geometry. The MCM construction is described, and the imaging performance of the different detectors is shown. As readout system a newly developed USB system has been used.

X-Ray Probing of the Central Regions of Clusters of Galaxies

Results of ASCA X-ray study of central regions of medium-richness clusters of galaxies are summarized, emphasizing differences between cD and non-cD clusters. The intra-cluster medium (ICM) is likely to consist of two (hot and cool) phases within $\sim 100$ kpc of a cD galaxy, where the ICM metallicity is also enhanced. In contrast, the ICM in non-cD clusters appears to be isothermal with little metallicity gradient right to the center. The gravitational potential exhibits a hierarchical nesting around cD galaxies, while a total mass-density profile with a central cusp is indicated for a non-cD cluster Abell~1060. The iron-mass-to-light ratio of the ICM decreases toward the center in both types of clusters, although it is radially constant in peripheral regions. The silicon-to-iron abundance ratio in the ICM increases with the cluster richness, but remains close to the solar ratio around cD galaxies. These overall results are interpreted without appealing to the popular cooling-flow hypothesis. Instead, an emphasis is put on the halo-in-halo structure formed around cD galaxies.

Detection of Excess Hard X-ray Emission from the Group of Galaxies HCG62

From the group of galaxies HCG62, we detected an excess hard X-ray emission in energies above $\sim 4$ keV with \A SCA. The excess emission is spatially extended up to $\sim10'$ from the group center, and somewhat enhanced toward north. Its spectrum can be represented by either a power-law of photon index 0.8-2.7, or a Bremsstrahlung of temperature $>6.3$ keV. In the 2-10 keV range, the observed hard X-ray flux, $(1.0\pm0.3)\times10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, implies a luminosity of $(8.0\pm2.0)\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for a Hubble constant of 50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. The emission is thus too luminous to be attributed to X-ray binaries in the memb er galaxies. We discuss possible origin of the hard X-ray emission.

ASCA Observations of Three Shakhbazyan's Compact Groups of Galaxies

X-ray observations of three Shakhbazyan's Compact Groups of Galaxies, SCGG 202, SCGG 205, and SCGG 223, are presented for the first time. Extended X-ray emission was detected from SCGG 202 and SCGG 223 with 0.5-2 keV luminosity of 1E42 erg/s and 3E42 erg/s (for H_0 = 75 km/s/Mpc), respectively, while no significant emission was detected from SCGG 205 with an upper limit of 0.7E42 erg/s. The X-ray spectra of SCGG 202 and SCGG 223 can be described with thin-thermal plasma emission with temperature about 1 keV. X-ray properties of SCGG 202 and SCGG 223 are in good agreement with those of other known groups of galaxies, proving the physical nature of their grouping.
