Single inclusive hadron and jet production in lepton-hadron scattering

We present the first calculation of single inclusive hadron and jet production at large transverse momentum in lepton-hadron scattering in a joint QCD+QED factorization approach. The scattering cross section is factorized into a convolution of infrared-safe hard coefficient functions with universal lepton distribution functions (LDFs) and parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the colliding lepton and hadron, respectively, together with fragmentation functions (FFs) of the observed hadron (or jet). With joint QCD+QED factorization, the DGLAP-type evolution equations for LDFs, PDFs, and FFs necessarily have evolution kernels calculated in both QCD and QED. We derive a default set of LDFs for our calculations and discuss a strategy to extract universal, non-perturbative LDFs from future data. We present our calculations for single inclusive hadron and/or jet production at the energies of Jefferson Lab and the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Medium-induced coherent gluon radiation for $2\to 2$ processes with general kinematics

High-energy proton-nucleus (pA) collisions offer valuable insight into the role of cold nuclear matter effects in hadron production. In particular, multiple rescatterings of an incoming parton by the nuclear target are known to induce the radiation of many soft gluons. Hadron production is affected by fully coherent energy loss (FCEL), owing to those radiated gluons with a long formation time. Here we present a recently derived formula for the induced single soft gluon radiation spectrum beyond leading logarithmic accuracy, whose main features are demonstrated with the example of $q\, g \to q\, g$ scattering.

Factorized QED and QCD Contribution to Deeply Inelastic Scattering

We present the first calculation of next-to-leading order (NLO) factorized QED and QCD contributions to the short-distance hard coefficients of inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in a joint QED and QCD factorization approach. Unlike the traditional radiative correction approach to handle the collision-induced QED contributions to DIS, QED radiation from all charged leptons and quarks are treated equally, and their collinear sensitivities are systematically factorized into corresponding universal lepton and parton distribution functions. We demonstrate that the NLO factorized QED contribution is completely infrared safe and calculable without the need of any parameters other than the standard factorization scale in the same way as the factorized QCD contribution. We discuss the potential impact of this joint factorization approach on the extraction of partonic information from lepton-hadron DIS.

Factorized QED Contribution to Lepton-Hadron DIS

We present the first calculation of next-to-leading order (NLO) factorized QED contributions to the short-distance hard coefficients of inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in a joint QCD and QED factorization approach. We demonstrate how the joint factorization consistently factorize all perturbative collinear sensitivities of partonic scattering in both QCD and QED into corresponding universal hadron and lepton distribution functions without the need of any parameters other than the standard factorization scale. We discuss the necessary modification to DGLAP-type evolution of the parton and lepton distribution functions in this joint factorization approach. We also discuss the potential impact of this joint factorization approach on the extraction of partonic information from lepton-hadron DIS.

Coherent gluon radiation: beyond leading-log accuracy

Results are presented for the medium-induced, soft coherent radiation spectrum for all $2\to 2$ partonic channels in QCD, at leading-order in $α_s$ but beyond leading logarithmic accuracy. The general formula is valid in the full kinematic range of the underlying process, and reduces to previous results in special cases. The soft gluon radiation spectrum is expressed in terms of the color density matrix specific to each channel, quantifying the entanglement between the color components of the $2 \to 2$ production amplitude. Beyond the leading logarithm, the spectrum depends explicitly on the off-diagonal elements of this matrix, owing to the soft gluon's ability to probe the internal color structure of the parton pair.

Subleading power corrections to heavy quarkonium production in QCD factorization approach

We report the current understanding of heavy quarkonium production at high transverse momentum ($p_T$) in hadronic collisions in terms of QCD factorization. In this presentation, we highlight the role of subleading power corrections to heavy quarkonium production, which are essential to describe the $p_T$ spectrum of quarkonium at a relatively lower $p_T$. We also introduce prescription to match QCD factorization to fixed-order NRQCD factorization calculations for quarkonium production at low $p_T$.

Prospects for quarkonium studies at the high-luminosity LHC

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings.

$J/ψ$ polarization in high multiplicity $pp$ and $pA$ collisions: CGC+NRQCD approach

Quarkonium production mechanism in high multiplicity small collision systems has recently been pursued in the color-glass-condensate (CGC) effective theory combined with non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization, allowing to study initial state interactions. Quarkonium polarization, potentially measured in future experiments, would help elucidate the quarkonium production mechanism at high multiplicities. In this paper, we provide predictions on $J/ψ$ polarization parameters in high multiplicity proton-proton ($pp$) and proton-nucleus ($pA$) collisions within the CGC+NRQCD framework. Theoretical predictions are given for $J/ψ$ rapidity $2.5< y_{J/ψ}<4$, charged-particle multiplicity pseudorapidity $|η_{ch} | <1$ and energies $\sqrt{S}=13\mathrm{~TeV}$ for $pp$, $\sqrt{S}=8.16\mathrm{~TeV}$ for $pA$ collisions. Considering two leptonic frame choices (Collins - Soper and helicity) we find a weak polarization of $J/ψ$ that additionally decreases with growing event activities. No significant system size dependence between $pp$ and $pA$ collisions is obtained - this could be a new constraint to initial state interactions in small collision systems.

QCD factorization for hadronic quarkonium production at high $p_T$

Heavy quarkonium production at high transverse momentum ($p_T$) in hadronic collisions is explored in the QCD factorization approach. We find that the leading power in the $1/p_T$ expansion is responsible for high $p_T$ regime, while the next-to-leading power contribution is necessary for the low $p_T$ region. We present the first numerical analysis of the scale evolution of coupled twist-2 and twist-4 fragmentation functions (FFs) for heavy quarkonium production and demonstrate that the QCD factorization approach is capable of describing the $p_T$ spectrum of hadronic $J/ψ$ production at the LHC.

Knowledge discovery from emergency ambulance dispatch during COVID-19: A case study of Nagoya City, Japan

Accurate forecasting of medical service requirements is an important big data problem that is crucial for resource management in critical times such as natural disasters and pandemics. With the global spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), several concerns have been raised regarding the ability of medical systems to handle sudden changes in the daily routines of healthcare providers. One significant problem is the management of ambulance dispatch and control during a pandemic. To help address this problem, we first analyze ambulance dispatch data records from April 2014 to August 2020 for Nagoya City, Japan. Significant changes were observed in the data during the pandemic, including the state of emergency (SoE) declared across Japan. In this study, we propose a deep learning framework based on recurrent neural networks to estimate the number of emergency ambulance dispatches (EADs) during a SoE. The fusion of data includes environmental factors, the localization data of mobile phone users, and the past history of EADs, thereby providing a general framework for knowledge discovery and better resource management. The results indicate that the proposed blend of training data can be used efficiently in a real-world estimation of EAD requirements during periods of high uncertainties such as pandemics.

Comparison of improved TMD and CGC frameworks in forward quark dijet production

For studying small-$x$ gluon saturation in forward dijet production in high-energy dilute-dense collisions, the improved TMD (ITMD) factorization formula was recently proposed. In the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework, it represents the leading term of an expansion in inverse powers of the hard scale. It contains the leading-twist TMD factorization formula relevant for small gluon's transverse momentum $k_t$, but also incorporates an all-order resummation of kinematical twists, resulting in a proper matching to high-energy factorization at large $k_t$. In this paper, we evaluate the accuracy of the ITMD formula quantitatively, for the case of quark dijet production in high-energy proton-proton($p+p$) and proton-nucleus ($p+A$) collisions at LHC energies. We do so by comparing the quark-antiquark azimuthal angle $Δϕ$ distribution to that obtained with the CGC formula. For a dijet with each quark momentum $p_t$ much larger than the target saturation scale, $Q_s$, the ITMD formula is a good approximation to the CGC formula in a wide range of azimuthal angle. It becomes less accurate as the jet $p_t$'s are lowered, as expected, due to the presence of genuine higher-twists contributions in the CGC framework, which represent multi-body scattering effects absent in the ITMD formula. We find that, as the hard jet momenta are lowered, the accuracy of ITMD start by deteriorating at small angles, in the high-energy-factorization regime, while in the TMD regime near $Δϕ=π$, very low values of $p_t$ are needed to see differences between the CGC and the ITMD formula. In addition, the genuine twists corrections to ITMD become visible for higher values of $p_t$ in $p+A$ collisions, compared to $p+p$ collisions, signaling that they are enhanced by the target saturation scale.

Event engineering studies for heavy flavor production and hadronization in high multiplicity hadron-hadron and hadron-nucleus collisions

Heavy flavor measurements in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at collider energies enable unique insights into their production and hadronization mechanism because experimental and theoretical uncertainties cancel in ratios of their cross-sections relative to minimum bias events. We explore such event engineering using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory to compute short distance charmonium cross-sections. The CGC is combined with heavy-quark fragmentation functions to compute $D$-meson cross-sections; for the $J/ψ$, hadronization is described employing Nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) and an Improved Color Evaporation model. Excellent agreement is found between the CGC computations and the LHC heavy flavor data in high multiplicity events. Event engineering in this CGC+NRQCD framework reveals a very rapid growth in the fragmentation of the $^3S_1^{[8]}$ state in rare events relative to minimum bias events.

Unified framework for heavy flavor and quarkonium production in high multiplicity p+p and p+A collisions at RHIC and LHC

We discuss the production of $D$-mesons and $J/ψ$ in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions within the Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. We demonstrate that the modification of the LHC data on $D$ and $J/ψ$ yields in high multiplicity events relative to minimum bias events arise from a significant enhancement of the gluon saturation scales of the corresponding rare parton configurations in the colliding protons and nuclei. For a given event multiplicity, we predict these relative yields to be energy independent from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC to the highest LHC energies.

Nuclear modification of forward $D$ production in pPb collisions at the LHC

We study nuclear modification factors for single $D$ meson and semileptonic decay lepton $l$ ($=e,μ$) production in minimum bias proton-nucleus (p$A$) collisions at the LHC in the color-glass-condensate (CGC) framework at leading order in strong coupling. In our numerical computations, transverse momentum ($k_\perp$) dependent multi-point Wilson line correlators are employed for describing target nucleus for p$A$ and proton for pp. The projectile proton is treated with unintegrated gluon distribution function, which is also $k_\perp$-dependent. The rapidity evolutions of these functions in the small Bjorken $x$ region are taken into account by solving running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation at leading logarithmic accuracy. For simplicity, we employ Kartvelishvili's type fragmentation function and a simple model for lepton energy distribution from seileptonic decay, respectively, to compute differential cross sections for $D$ and $l$ production. The gluon saturation scale inside the heavy nucleus is enhanced and dependent on $x$, which we take into account by replacing the initial saturation scale in the BK equation with a larger value for the heavy nucleus. We show that the saturation effect leads to perceptible nuclear suppression of $D$ production at forward rapidity. Our numerical results predict similar nuclear suppressions in p$A$ collisions for forward $l$ production at lower transverse momentum $p_\perp<2\;{\rm GeV}$. Numerical tables on the nuclear modifications of $D$ and $l$ are listed in this note.

Leptons from heavy-quark semileptonic decay in pA collisions within the CGC framework

We study single lepton production from semileptonic decays of heavy flavor hadrons ($D,B\rightarrow~l$) in pp and p$A$ collisions at RHIC and the LHC within the saturation/Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. Using the gluon distribution function obtained with the dipole amplitude, whose energy dependence is described by the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with running coupling effect, we compute the transverse-momentum ($p_\perp$) spectra of the lepton yields at mid and forward rapidities. We find that a large fraction of leptons at low $p_\perp$ stems from the saturation regime of the incoming gluons in the target, especially in p$A$ collisions at the LHC. The resultant $p_\perp$ spectra is slightly harder than the data, but the nuclear modification factor seems consistent with the data within some uncertainty. We also update the nuclear modification factors for J/$ψ$ and $D$ meson at the LHC energy.

$ψ(2S)$ versus $J/ψ$ suppression in proton-nucleus collisions from factorization violating soft color exchanges

We argue that the large suppression of the $ψ(2S)$ inclusive cross-section relative to the $J/ψ$ inclusive cross-section in proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions can be attributed to factorization breaking effects in the formation of quarkonium. These factorization breaking effects arise from soft color exchanges between charm-anticharm pairs undergoing hadronization and comoving partons that are long-lived on time scales of quarkonium formation. We compute the short distance pair production of heavy quarks in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory and employ an improved Color Evaporation model (ICEM) to describe their hadronization into quarkonium at large distances. The combined CGC+ICEM model provides a quantitative description of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ data in proton-proton (p+p) collisions from both RHIC and the LHC. Factorization breaking effects in hadronization, due to additional parton comovers in the nucleus, are introduced heuristically by imposing a cutoff $Λ$, representing the momentum kick from soft color exchanges, in the ICEM model. Such soft exchanges have no perceptible effect on $J/ψ$ suppression in p+A collisions. In contrast, the interplay of the physics of these soft exchanges at large distances, with the physics of semi-hard rescattering at short distances, causes a significant additional suppression of $ψ(2S)$ yields relative to that of the $J/ψ$. A good fit of all RHIC and LHC $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ data, for transverse momenta $P_\perp\leq 5$ GeV in p+p and p+A collisions, is obtained for $Λ\sim 10$ MeV.
