Heavy quarkonium production in hadronic collisions in TMD framework

Heavy quarkonium ($Υ$) production at low transverse momentum ($P_\perp$) in high-energy hadronic collisions is revisited from the point of view of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. We perform resummation of double logarithmic correction associated with initial-state soft gluon shower for $b\bar b$ production by employing Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism. We show that the CSS formalism provides a nice description of $Υ$ production data in p+$\rm\bar{p}$ collisions at Tevatron and p+p collisions at the LHC.

Forward Hadron Productions in Proton-Proton Collisions in Small-$x$ Formalism

Employing the so-called hybrid formalism, we calculate the cross section of inclusive hadron production in proton-proton collisions at forward rapidity in small-$x$ formalism at one-loop order. For the case of hadron production at forward rapidity, we can uses collinear parton distributions for projectile proton and $k_\perp$ dependent gluon distribution for target proton. We show that collinear divergences associated with initial and final state parton radiations are renormalized into parton distributions and fragmentation functions in terms of the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equation, respectively. Furthermore, rapidity divergence can be absorbed into the wave function of target proton which gives rise to the well-known Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov equation. These divergences are completely separated from the short distance partonic hard parts, which is now finite at the next-to-leading order accuracy. The result presented in this paper can be reckoned as a baseline calculation without any non-linear QCD effects in small-$x$ formalism. As a consistency check, we compare our results with the previous calculation for non-linear proton-nucleus collisions in the small-$x$ formalism and find complete agreement in the dilute and large $N_c$ limit. In phenomenology, the direct comparison of the above two separate calculations can reveal the role and strength of the non-linear dynamics in high energy QCD, and thus help us reliably study the onset of gluon saturation when genuine non-linear interactions become important.

Forward Heavy Quarkonium Productions at the LHC

We investigate the low transverse momentum heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$, $Υ$) productions in the forward rapidity region of $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC as an important probe to the transverse momentum tomography of the gluons in hadrons in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. By implementing the Sudakov resummation consistently in the CGC formalism, we achieve an excellent agreement between the improved CGC calculations and the LHC data. We show that both the small-$x$ and the Sudakov effects are essential for a complete description of heavy quarkonium productions in the low transverse momentum region. This provides a solid foundation to study the small-$x$ gluon saturation in a big nucleus with the future $pA$ programs at the LHC.

Implementing the exact kinematical constraint in the saturation formalism

We revisit the issue of the large negative next-to-leading order (NLO) cross section for single inclusive hadron production in $pA$ collisions in the saturation formalism. By implementing the exact kinematical constraint in the modified dipole splitting functions, two additional positive NLO correction terms are obtained. In the asymptotic large $k_\perp$ limit, we analytically show that these two terms become as large as the negative NLO contributions found in our previous calculation. Furthermore, the numerical results demonstrate that the applicable regime of the saturation formalism can be extended to a larger $k_\perp$ window, where the exact matching between the saturation formalism (in the asymptotic $k_\perp$ regime) and the collinear factorization calculations will have to be performed separately. In addition, after significantly improving the numerical accuracy of the NLO correction, we obtain excellent agreement with the LHC and RHIC data for forward hadron productions.

Heavy quark pair production in high energy pA collisions: Open heavy flavors

We study open heavy flavor meson production in proton-nucleus (pA) collisions at RHIC and LHC energies within the Color Glass Condensate framework. We use the unintegrated gluon distribution at small Bjorken's x in the proton obtained by solving the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with running coupling correction and constrained by global fitting of HERA data. We change the initial saturation scale of the gluon distribution for the heavy nucleus. The gluon distribution with McLerran-Venugopalan model initial condition is also used for comparison. We present transverse momentum spectra of single D and B productions in pA collisions, and the so-called nuclear modification factor. The azimuthal angle correlation of open heavy flavor meson pair is also computed to study the modification due to the gluon saturation in the heavy nucleus at the LHC.

Heavy quark pair production in high energy pA collisions: Quarkonium

Quarkonium production in high-energy proton (deuteron)-nucleus collisions is investigated in the color glass condensate framework. We employ the color evaporation model assuming that the quark pair produced from dense small-x gluons in the nuclear target bounds into a quarkonium outside the target. The unintegrated gluon distribution at small Bjorken x in the nuclear target is treated with the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with running coupling corrections. For the gluons in the proton, we examine two possible descriptions, unintegrated gluon distribution and ordinary collinear gluon distribution. We present the transverse momentum spectrum and nuclear modification factor for J/psi production at RHIC and LHC energies, and those for Upsilon(1S) at LHC energy, and discuss the nuclear modification factor and the momentum broadening by changing the rapidity and the initial saturation scale.
