Upper critical field Hc2 in Bechgaard salts (TMTSF)2PF6

The symmetry of the superconductivity in Bechgaard salts is still unknown, though the triplet pairing has been established by Hc2 and NMR for (TMTSF)2PF6. The large upper critical field at T = 0K (Hc2 ~ 5 Tesla) both for H || a and H || b also indicates strongly the triplet pairing. Here we start with a low energy effective Hamiltonian and study the temperature dependence of the corresponding Hc2(T)'s. The present analysis suggests that one chiral f-wave superconductor should be the most likely candidate near the upper critical field.

Half quantum vortices and Majorana fermions in triplet superconductors

Half quantum vortices (HQVs) in superfluid $^3He-A$ have been speculated since 1976. Two years ago, Yamashita et al reported a very unusual NMR satellite in the rotating superfluid $^3He-A$ in a parallel plate geometry. Recently this satellite has been interpreted in terms of HQVs. Also, the strong flux pinnings in the triplet superconductors $UPt_3, Sr_2RuO_4$ and $U_{1-x}Th_xBe_{13}$ have been discovered by Mota and her colleagues which are interpreted in terms of HQVs. We shall first review the bound state spectra around a single vortex in unconventional superconductors, which provides the necessary background. In particular, we find the zero modes of the Majorana fermions in some of triplet superconductors $UPt_3, Sr_2RuO_4$ and $CePt_3Sn$. Armed with these results we analyze the microscopic aspects of HQVs in $UPt_3$ and $Sr_2RuO_4$. We compute the quasiparticle density of states and the local magnetic field around HQVs, which should be accessible to scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), micromagnetometry and neutron scattering below 300 mK.

Half quantum vortex in superfluid $^3$He-A phase in parallel plate geometry

The half quantum vortex(HQV) in condensate has been studied, since it was predicted by Salomaa and Volovik in superfluid $^3$He-A phase. However, an experimental evidence for its existence has not been reported so far. Motivated by a recent experimental report by Yamashita et al\cite{yamashita}, we study the HQVs in superfluid $^3$He confined between two parallel plates with a gap D $\sim$ 10 $μ$m in the presence of a magnetic field H $\sim$ 26 mT perpendicular to the parallel plates. We find that the bound HQVs are more stable than the singular vortices and free pairs of HQVs, when the rotation perpendicular to the parallel plates is below the critical speed, $Ω_c \sim$ 2 rad/s. The bound pair of HQVs accompanies the tilting of ${\hat d}$-vector out of the plane, which leads to an additional absorption in NMR spectra. Our study appears to describe the temperature and rotation dependence of the observed satellite NMR signal, which supports the existence of the HQVs in $^3$He.

Hidden symmetries in Bechgaard salt (TMTSF)2NO3

Among known Bechgaard and Fabre salts (TMTSF)2NO3 is unique since it never becomes superconducting even under pressure. Also, though (TMTSF)2NO3 undergoes the spin density wave (SDW) transition, the low temperature transport is semimetallic and gapless. We propose: a) the absence of the superconductivity is due to the inverse symmetry breaking associated with the anion ordering at 45K; b) the SDW state below 9K should be unconventional as seen from the angle dependent magnetoresistance oscillation (AMRO); c) a new phase diagram for Bechgaard salts, where unconventional spin density wave (USDW) occupies the prominent space.

Impurity scattering in unconventional density waves: non-crossing approximation for arbitrary scattering rate

We present a detailed theoretical study on the thermodynamic properties of impure quasi-one dimensional unconventional charge-, and spin-density waves in the framework of mean-field theory. The impurities are of the ordinary non-magnetic type. Making use of the full self-energy that takes into account all ladder-, and rainbow-type diagrams, we are able to calculate the relevant low temperature quantities for arbitrary impurity concentration and scattering rates. These are the density of states, specific heat and the shift in the chemical potential. Our results therefore cover the whole parameter space: they include both the self-consistent Born and the resonant unitary limits, and most importantly give exact results in between.

Unconventional spin density wave in Bechgaard salt (TMTSF)2NO3

Among many Bechgaard salts, TMTSF2NO3 exhibits very anomalous low temperature properties. Unlike conventional spin density wave (SDW), TMTSF2NO3 undergoes the SDW transition at $\T_SDW\approx 9.5$ K and the low temperature quasiparticle excitations are gapless. Also, it is known that TMTSF2NO3 does not exhibit superconductivity even under pressure, while FISDW is found in TMTSF2NO3 only for P=8.5 kbar and B>20 T. Here we shall show that both the angle dependent magnetoresistance data and the nonlinear Hall resistance of TMTSF2NO3 at ambient pressure are interpreted satisfactory in terms of unconventional spin density wave (USDW). Based on these facts, we propose a new phase diagram for Bechgaards salts.

Bottom-up approach to high-temperature superconductivity

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates a theoretical understanding of their phase diagram has remained one of the major outstanding problems in condensed matter physics. Here we propose an effective low-energy Hamiltonian which produces both d-wave density wave (dDW) and d-wave superconducting (dSC) solutions within the BCS mean-field theory. This model predicts that (a) the observed pseudogap phase is a dDW state, (b) the superconducting phase is a d-wave BCS state, and (c) in the underdoped regime there is a gossamer superconducting state, i.e. dSC in coexistence with dDW. Moreover, this theory naturally explains the Uemura relation, the reduction of the quasiparticle density of states at the Fermi level, and the salient features in the tunneling conductivity measured in underdoped Bi2212.

Scaling Behavior of Angular Dependent Resistivity in CeCoIn$_5$: Possible Evidence for d-Wave Density Waves

In-plane angular dependent resistivity ADR was measured in the non-Fermi liquid regime of CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals at temperatures $T \le 20$ K and in magnetic fields $H$ up to 14 T. Two scaling behaviors were identified in low field region where resistivity shows T-linear dependence, separated by a critical angle $θ_{c}$ which is determined by the anisotropy of CeCoIn$_5$; i.e., ADR depends only on the perpendicular (parallel) field component below (above) $θ_c$. These scaling behaviors and other salient features of ADR are consistent with d-wave density waves.

Pseudogap enhancement due to magnetic impurities in d-density waves

We study the effect of quantum magnetic impurities on d-wave spin density waves (d-SDW). The impurity spins are aligned coherently according to the spin space anisotropy of the condensate. Both the order parameter and transition temperature increases due to the coherent interplay between magnetic scatterers and d-SDW. This can explain the recent experimental data on the pseudogap enhancement of Ni substituted NdBa_2{Cu_{1-y}Ni_y}O_6.8 from Pimenov et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 227003 (2005)).

Unconventional Density Waves in Organic Conductors and in Superconductors

Unconventional density waves (UDW) are one of the ground states in metallic crystalline solids and have been speculated already in 1968. However, more focused studies on UDW started only recently, perhaps after the identification of the low temperature phase in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 as unconventional charge density wave (UCDW) in 2002. More recently, the metallic phase of Bechgaard salts (TMTSF)_2X with X=PF_6 and ReO_4 under both pressure and magnetic field appears to be unconventional spin density wave (USDW). The pseudogap regime of high T_c superconductors LSCO, YBCO, Bi2212 and the one in CeCoIn_5 belong to d-wave density waves (d-DW). In these identifications, the angular dependent magnetoresistance and the giant Nernst effect have played the crucial role. These are the simplest manifestations of the Landau quantization of quasiparticle energy in UDW in the presence of magnetic field (the Nersesyan effect). Also we speculate that UDW will be most likely found in alpha$-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3, alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_2Br, kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu(NCS)_2, kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu(CN)_2Br, lambda-(BEDT)_2GaCl_4 and in many other organic compounds.

Anisotropic superconductivity in PrOs4Sb12

Recently the superconducting gap functions of the skutterudite PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ have been proposed [K. Maki et al, Europhys. Lett. {\bf 68}, 720 (2004)]. The superconductivity is spin-triplet and consists of at least 2 distinct phases in a magnetic field, which bears some resemblance to superfluid $ ^{3}$He. Here we present our analysis of the thermodynamic properties of these two superconducting states within the weak-coupling BCS theory. The superfluid density of the B phase is compared with recent experimental data.

Magnetotransport in d-wave density waves

Angle dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) and giant Nernst effect are hallmarks of unconventional density waves (UDW). Here these transport properties for d-wave density wave (d-DW) are computed for quasi-two-dimensional systems. The present theory describes ADMR observed in the pseudogap phase of Y_0.68Pr_0.32Ba_2Cu_3O_7 and CeCoIn_5 single crystals very satisfactorily.

Gapped optical excitations from gapless phases: imperfect nesting in unconventional density waves

We consider the effect of imperfect nesting in quasi-one-dimensional unconventional density waves in the case, when the imperfect nesting and the gap depends on the same wavevector component. The phase diagram is very similar to that in a conventional density wave. The density of states is highly asymmetric with respect to the Fermi energy. The optical conductivity at T=0 remains unchanged for small deviations from perfect nesting. For higher imperfect nesting parameter, an optical gap opens, and considerable amount of spectral weight is transferred to higher frequencies. This makes the optical response of our system very similar to that of a conventional density wave. Qualitatively similar results are expected in d-density waves.

High-Tc Cuprate Superconductivity in a Nutshell

Since the discovery of high-Tc cuprate superconductivity in 1986 many new experimental techniques and theoretical concepts have been developed. In particular it was shown that the BCS theory of d-wave superconductivity describes semi-quantitatively the high-Tc superconductivity. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that Volovik's approach is extremely useful for finding the quasiparticle properties in the vortex state. Here we survey these developments and forecast future directions.

Supercurrent in Nodal Superconductors

In recent years, a number of nodal superconductors have been identified; d-wave superconductors in high T_c cuprates, CeCoIn$_5$, and κ-(ET)_2Cu(NCS)_2, 2D f-wave superconductor in Sr_2RuO_4 and hybrid s+g-wave superconductor in YNi_2B_2C. In this work we conduct a theoretical study of nodal superconductors in the presence of supercurrent. For simplicity, we limit ourselves to d-wave and 2D f-wave superconductors. We compute the quasiparticle density of states and the temperature dependence of the depairing critical current in nodal superconductors, both of which are accessible experimentally.

Unconventional density wave in CeCoIn_5?

Very recently large Nernst effect and Seebeck effect were observed above the superconducting transition temperature 2.3K in a heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5. We shall interpret this large Nernst effect in terms of unconventional density wave (UDW), which appears around T=18K. Also the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient below T=18K is described in terms of UDW. Another hallmark for UDW is the angular dependent magnetoresistance, which should be readily accessible experimentally.

Perspectives on Nodal Superconductors

In the last few years the gap symmetries of many new superconductors, including Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, CeCoIn$_5$, $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$, YNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C and PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, have been identified via angle-dependent magnetothermal conductivity measurements. However, a controversy still persists as to the nature of the superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. For PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, spin-triplet superconductivity has recently been proposed. Here, we also propose g-wave superconductivity for UPd$_2$Al$_3$ (i.e., $Δ({\bf k})=Δ\cos(2χ), χ= ck_{z}$) based on recent thermal conductivity data.
