Recent Advances in Unconventional Density Waves

Unconventional density wave (UDW) has been speculated as a possible electronic ground state in excitonic insulator in 1968. Recent surge of interest in UDW is partly due to the proposal that the pseudogap phase in high T_c cuprate superconductors is d-wave density wave (d-DW). Here we review our recent works on UDW within the framework of mean field theory. In particular we have shown that many properties of the low temperature phase (LTP) in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2MHg(SCN)_4 with M=K, Rb and Tl are well characterized in terms of unconventional charge density wave (UCDW). In this identification the Landau quantization of the quasiparticle motion in a magnetic field (the Nersesyan effect) plays the crucial role. Indeed the angular dependent magnetoresistance and the negative giant Nernst effect are two hallmarks of UDW.

Triplet superconductivity in the skutterudite PrOs_4Sb_12

There is mounting evidence for triplet superconductivity in the recently discovered skutterudite compound PrOs_4Sb_12. In this work, we propose nodal order parameters for the A- and B-phases of this superconductor which are consistent with angle dependent magnetothermal conductivity measurements and with low-temperature thermal conductivity data in the range T > 150 mK. The quasiparticle density of states and the thermal conductivity kappa_zz are derived within the quasiclassical approximation.

Anatomy of Gossamer Superconductivity

There are many systems in which two order parameters compete with each other. Of particular interest are systems in which these order parameters are both unconventional. In this contribution, we examine the representative example of a d-wave superconductor in the presence of a d-wave density wave, which has been suggested as a model for the pseudogap phase in the high- T_c superconductors. The physical properties of unconventional superconductivity in the presence of an anisotropic charge density wave are investigated within mean field theory. This model describes many features that were anticipated by an earlier phenomenological treatment of Tallon and Loram. In addition, the quasiparticle density of states in the presence of these two order parameters is calculated, which should be accessible by scanning tunneling microscopy.

Quasiparticle spectrum of the hybrid s+g-wave superconductors YNi_2B_2C and LuNi_2B_2C

Recent experiments on single crystals of YNi$_2$B$_2$C have revealed the presence of point nodes in the superconducting energy gap Delta(k} at k = (1,0,0), (0,1,0), (-1,0,0), and (0,-1,0). In this paper we investigate the effects of impurity scattering on the quasiparticle spectrum in the vortex state of s+g-wave superconductors, which is found to be strongly modified in the presence of disorder. In particular, a gap in the quasiparticle energy spectrum is found to open even for infinitesimal impurity scattering, giving rise to exponentially activated thermodynamic response functions, such as the specific heat, the spin susceptibility, the superfluid density, and the nuclear spin lattice relaxation. Predictions derived from this study can be verified by measurements of the angular dependent magnetospecific heat and the magnetothermal conductivity.

Magnetothermopower and Nernst effect in unconventional charge density waves

Recently we have shown that the striking angular dependent magnetoresistance in the low temperature phase (LTP) of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 is consistently described in terms of unconventional charge density wave (UCDW). Here we investigate theoretically the thermoelectric power and the Nernst effect in UDW. The present results account consistently for the recent data of magnetothermopower in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 obtained by Choi et al. (Phys. Rev. B, 65, 205119 (2002)). This confirms further our identification of LTP in this salt as UCDW. We propose also that the Nernst effect provides a clear signature of UDW.

Aspects of unconventional density waves

Recently many people discuss unconventional density waves (i.e. unconventional charge density waves (UCDW) and unconventional spin density waves (USDW)). Unlike in conventional density waves, the quasiparticle spectrum in these systems is gapless. Also these systems remain metallic. Indeed it appears that there are many candidates for UDW. The low temperature phase of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4, the antiferromagnetic phase in URu_2Si_2, the CDW in transition metal dichalcogenite NbSe_2, the pseudogap phase in high T_c cuprate superconductors, the glassy phase in organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br. After a brief introduction on UCDW and USDW, we shall discuss some of the above systems, where we believe we have evidence for unconventional density waves.

Possible Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov State in CeCoIn_5

Angular dependent magnetothermal conductivity experiments on CeCoIn_5 indicate that this compound is a d-wave superconductor. In this study, the low-temperature behavior of the upper critical field is measured in a single crystal of CeCoIn_5 along the directions H parallel a and H parallel c. The data is compared with model calculations of the upper critical field in a d-wave superconductor. It is found that the observed H_c2(T) along H parallel a is consistent with a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state at low temperatures, T < 0.7K, whereas for H parallel c the FFLO state appears to be absent in CeCoIn_5. Furthermore, it is predicted that the quasiparticle density of states in the FFLO state exhibits a complex peak structure which should be observable by scanning tunneling microscopy.

Impurity effects in unconventional density waves in the unitary limit

We investigate the effect of strong, nonmagnetic impurities on quasi-one-dimensional conventional and unconventional density waves (DW and UDW). The conventional case remains unaffected similarly to s-wave superconductors in the presence of weak, nonmagnetic impurities. The thermodynamic properties of UDW were found to be identical to those of a d-wave superconductor in the unitary limit. The real and imaginary part of the optical conductivity is determined for electric fields applied in the perpendicular directions. A new structure can be present corresponding to excitations from the bound state at the Fermi energy to the gap maximum in addition to the usual peak at 2Δ. In the dc limit, universal electric conductivity is found.

Optical conductivity of superconducting Sr_2RuO_4

We compute the optical conductivity of 2D f-wave superconductors and also of the multigap model proposed recently by Zhitomirsky and Rice at T=0K in the Born limit. The presence of interband impurity scattering was found to play an important role: the contributions from the two bands mix up, and new structures are seen in the tunneling density of states and in the optical spectrum as well, corresponding to interband transitions. This will provide a sensitive test in selecting the competing models for the triplet superconductivity in Sr_2RuO_4.

Theory of c-axis Josephson tunneling in d-wave superconductors

The temperature and angular dependence of the c-axis Josephson current and the superfluid density in layered d-wave superconductors are studied within the framework of an extended Ambegaokar-Baratoff formalism. In particular, the effects of angle-dependent tunneling matrix elements and Andreev scattering at grain boundaries are taken into account. These lead to strong corrections of the low-temperature behavior of the plasma frequency and the Josephson current. Recent c-axis measurements on the cuprate high-temperature superconductors HgBa_2CaCu_{1+δ} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} can therefore be interpreted to be consistent with a d-wave order parameter.

Unconventional charge density wave in the organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4

The low temperature phase (LTP) of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 salt is known for its surprising angular dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR), which has been studied intensively in the last decade. However, the nature of the LTP has not been understood until now. Here we analyse theoretically ADMR in unconventional (or nodal) charge density wave (UCDW). In magnetic field the quasiparticle spectrum in UCDW is quantized, which gives rise to spectacular ADMR. The present model accounts for many striking features of ADMR data in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4.

Imperfect nesting and transport properties in unconventional density waves

We consider the effect of imperfect nesting in quasi-one dimensional unconventional density waves. The phase diagram is very close to those in a conventional DW. The linear and non-linear aspects of the electric conductivity are discussed. At T=0 the frequency dependent electric conductivity develops a small dip at low frequencies. The threshold electric field depends strongly on the imperfect nesting parameter, allowing us to describe the measured threshold electric field in the low temperature phase of the quasi-two dimensional organic conductor, alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 very well.

Unconventional spin density wave in (TMTSF)2PF6 below T* ~ 4K

The presence of subphases in spin-density wave (SDW) phase of (TMTSF)2PF6 below T* ~ 4K has been suggested by several experiments but the nature of the new phase is still controversial. We have investigated the temperature dependence of the angular dependence of the magnetoresistance in the SDW phase which shows different features for temperatures above and below T*. For T > 4K the magnetoresistance can be understood in terms of the Landau quantization of the quasiparticle spectrum in a magnetic field, where the imperfect nesting plays the crucial role. We propose that below T* ~ 4K the new unconventional SDW (USDW) appears modifying dramatically the quasiparticle spectrum. Unlike conventional SDW the order parameter of USDW depends on the quasiparticle momentum. The present model describes many features of the angular dependence of magnetoresistance reasonably well. Therefore, we may conclude that the subphase in (TMTSF)2PF6 below T* ~ 4K is described as SDW plus USDW.

The angular dependent magnetoresistance in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4

In spite of extensive experimental studies of the angular dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) of the low temperature phase (LTP) of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 about a decade ago, the nature of LTP remains elusive. Here we present a new study of ADMR of LTP in alpha-(ET)_2 salts assuming that LTP is unconventional charge density wave (UCDW). In the presence of magnetic field the quasiparticle spectrum in UCDW is quantized, which gives rise to striking ADMR in UCDW. The present model appears to account for many existing ADMR data of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 remarkably well.

Impurity scattering in unconventional density waves

We have investigated the effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the quasi-one-dimensional unconventional density wave (UDW) ground state. The thermodynamics were found to be close to those of a d-wave superconductor in the Born limit. Four different optical conductivity curves were found depending on the direction of the applied electric field and on the wavevector dependence of the gap.

Magnetoresistance in the SDW state of (TMTSF)2PF6 above T*~4K; Novel effect due to the Landau quantization

Magnetoresistance in the spin-density wave (SDW) state of (TMTSF)2PF6 is known to exhibit a rich variety of the angular dependencies when a magnetic field B is rotated in the b'-c*, a-b' and a-c* planes. In the presence of a magnetic field the quasiparticle spectrum in the SDW with imperfect nesting is quantized. In such a case the minimum quasiparticle energy depends both on the magnetic field strength |B| and the angle θbetween the field and the crystal direction a, b' or c*. This approach describes rather satisfactory the magnetoresistance above T*~4K.

The magnetic field dependence of the threshold electric field in unconventional charge density waves

Many experiments suggest that the unidentified low temperature phase (LTP) of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 is most likely unconventional charge density wave (UCDW). To further this identification we present our theoretical study of the threshold electric field of UCDW in a magnetic field. The magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is very similar to those in a d-wave superconductor. We find a rather strong field dependence of the threshold electric field, which should be readily accessible experimentally.

Anisotropic s-wave superconductivity in MgB_2

It has recently been observed that MgB_2 is a superconductor with a high transition temperature. Here we propose a model of anisotropic s-wave superconductivity which consistently describes the observed properties of this compound, including the thermodynamic and optical response in sintered MgB_2 wires. We also determine the shape of the quasiparticle density of states and the anisotropy of the upper critical field and the superfluid density which should be detectable once single-crystal samples become available.
