Out of plane optical conductivity in d-wave superconductors

We study theoretically the out of plane optical conductivity of d-wave superconductors in the presence of impurities at T=0K. Unlike the usual approach, we assume that the interlayer quasi-particle transport is due to coherent tunneling. The present model describes the T^2 dependence of the out of plane superfluid density observed in YBCO and Tl2201 for example. In the optical conductivity there is no Drude peak in agreement with experiment, and the interlayer Josephson tunneling is also assured in this model. In the unitary limit we predict a step like behaviour around omega=Delta in both the real and imaginary part of the optical conductivity.

Threshold electric field in unconventional density waves

As it is well known most of charge density wave (CDW) and spin density wave (SDW) exhibit the nonlinear transport with well defined threshold electric field E_T. Here we study theoretically the threshold electric field of unconventional density waves. We find that the threshold field increases monotonically with temperature without divergent behaviour at T_c, unlike the one in conventional CDW. The present result in the 3D weak pinning limit appears to describe rather well the threshold electric field observed recently in the low-temperature phase (LTP) of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4.

Optical conductivity of d-wave superconductors

We study theoretically the optical conductivity of d-wave superconductors like in high temperature cuprates in the presence of impurities. We limit ourselves at T=0K and focus on the frequency dependence of both sigma_1(omega) and ω*σ_2(omega) for omega<2Delta. When the impurity scattering is in the unitary limit, we find a peak in sigma_1(omega) with omega/Delta\simeq 0.1\sim 0.5$, which may account for the peak seen by Basov et al. in Zn-substituted YBCO.

Bound states and extended states around a single vortex in the d-wave superconductors

Making use of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for the d-wave superconductors, we investigate the quasi-particle spectrum around a single vortex. Taking $p_Fξ=10$, we found that there are bound states which are localized around the vortex core, and extended states which are rather uniform, for $|E|<Δ$ where $E$ is the quasi-particle energy and $Δ$ is the asymptotic value of the order parameter for away from the vortex.

Temperature dependence of impurity bound states in d-wave superconductors

We study the evolution with temperature of quasiparticle bound states around non-magnetic impurities in d-wave superconductors. The associated local density of states has a fourfold symmetry which has recently been observed in Zn-doped Bi2212 using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). From the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation we find that with increasing temperature the magnitude of the bound state energy increases and the amplitude of the fourfold contribution in the spinor wave functions decreases. In the pseudogap regime above T_c the fourfold angular dependence of the local tunneling conductance persists as long as the superconducting fluctuations are sufficiently strong to support a finite local order parameter. Once the gap function vanishes completely, the angular structure of the bound state wave function becomes featureless. These effects should be observable in STM studies of impurity doped high-temperature superconductors.

Spin waves in a two dimensional p-wave superconductor: Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

We study spin excitations in a two dimensional p-wave superconductor with ${\vec Δ} = {\hat d}({\hat k}_1 \pm i {\hat k}_2)$ symmetry in the context of the newly discovered superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The polarization and spectrum of spin wave excitations are identified and their experimental consequences are discussed.

Collective modes and sound propagation in a p-wave superconductor: Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

There are five distinct collective modes in the recently discovered p-wave superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$; phase and amplitude modes of the order parameter, clapping mode (real and imaginary), and spin wave. The first two modes also exist in the ordinary s-wave superconductors, while the clapping mode with the energy $\sqrt{2} Δ(T)$ is unique to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and couples to the sound wave. Here we report a theoretical study of the sound propagation in a two dimensional p-wave superconductor. We identified the clapping mode and study its effects on the longitudinal and transverse sound velocities in the superconducting state. In contrast to the case of $^3$He, there is no resonance absorption associated with the collective mode, since in metals $ω/(v_F |{\bf q}|) \ll 1$, where $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity, {\bf q} is the wave vector, and $ω$ is the frequency of the sound wave. However, the velocity change in the collisionless limit gets modified by the contribution from the coupling to the clapping mode. We compute this contribution and comment on the visibility of the effect. In the diffusive limit, the contribution from the collective mode turns out to be negligible. The behaviors of the sound velocity change and the attenuation coefficient near $T_c$ in the diffusive limit are calculated and compared with the existing experimental data wherever it is possible. We also present the results for the attenuation coefficients in both of the collisionless and diffusive limits at finite temperatures.

Impurity Bound States and Symmetry of the Superconducting Order Parameter in Sr_2RuO_4

Recent experiments on Sr_2RuO_4 have indicated the presence of linear nodes in the superconducting order parameter. Among the possible spin triplet states, 2D p-wave superconductivity with E_u symmetry appears to be inconsistent with the experiments, whereas the 2D f-wave order parameter with B_1g x E_u symmetry turns out to be a more likely candidate. Here it is shown how the quasi-particle bound state wave functions around a single impurity provide a clear signature of the symmetry of the underlying superconducting order parameter.

Half-quantum vortex and d-soliton in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

Assuming that the superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is described by a planar p-wave order parameter, we consider possible topological defects in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In particular, it is shown that both of the ${\hat d}$-soliton and half-quantum vortex can be created in the presence of the magnetic field parallel to the $a$-$b$ plane. We discuss how one can detect the ${\hat d}$-soliton and half-quantum vortex experimentally.

Quasi-Particle Bound States around Impurities in d-wave Superconductors

Zn and Ni impurities in the hole-doped high-temperature superconductors are known to have strong effects on thermodynamic and transport properties. A recent scanning tunneling microscope study of Zn-doped Bi2212 (Pan et al., Nature 403, 746 (2000)) has provided high-resolution images of the local density of states around non-magnetic impurities in d-wave superconductors. These pictures contain detailed information about the spinor wave functions u(r) and v(r) of bound states with energy E_0 \sim Delta/30, centered at the Zn-sites. We show that this type of wave function follows from the solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for d-wave superconductors.

Quasi-Particle Spectrum around a Single Vortex in Superconductors - s-Wave Case -

Making use of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we study the quasi-particle spectrum and the vortex core structure of a single vortex in quasi 2D s-wave superconductors for small p_F xi_0, where p_F is the Fermi momentum and xi_0=v_F/Delta_0 is the coherence length (hbar=1). During our numerical calculation the particle number is conserved for each p_F xi_0. In particular, we find that there are only 1 or 2 bound states for p_F xi_0=1. Also, for p_F xi_0=1, the Kramer-Pesch effect ceases to exist at around T/T_c= 0.3.

Paramagnetic Reentrance Effect in NS Proximity Cylinders

A scenario for the unusual paramagnetic reentrance behavior at ultra-low temperatures in Nb-Ag, Nb-Au, and Nb-Cu cylinders is presented. For the diamagnetic response down to temperatures of the order 15 mK, the standard theory (quasi-classical approximation) for superconductors appears to work very well, assuming that Ag, Au, and Cu remain in the normal state except for the proximity-induced superconductivity. Here it is proposed that these noble metals may become p-wave superconductors with a transition temperature of order 10 mK. Below this temperature, p-wave triplet superconductivity emerges around the periphery of the cylinder. The diamagnetic current flowing in the periphery is compensated by a quantized paramagnetic current in the opposite direction, thus providing a simple explanation for the observed increase in the susceptibility at ultra-low temperatures.

Impurity Scattering in f-wave Superconductor UPt_3

We study theoretically the effect of impurity scattering in f-wave (or E_{2u}) superconductors. The quasi-particle density of states of f-wave superconductor is very similar to the one for d-wave superconductor as in hole-doped high T_c cuprates. Also in spite of anisotropy in Delta(k), both the normalized superfluid density and the thermal conductivity is completely isotropic.

Impurity scattering and frequency dependent conductivity in spin density waves

The quasiparticle contribution to the frequency dependent electric conductivity in the presence of randomly distributed impurities is calculated within mean field theory for spin density waves as formed in quasi one dimensional conductors like Bechgaard salts. Interchain hopping is taken into account and the effects of imperfect nesting are considered. In case of an electric field perpendicular to the chain direction there is no collective contribution to the conductivity and our results are directly applicable to recent measurements on both (TMTSF)2PF6 and quenched (TMTSF)2ClO4. The experimental data are well described by the theory in the clean limit, with somewhat larger scattering in the ClO4 salt.

Quasi-particle spectrum around a single vortex in s-wave superconductors

Making use of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we study the quasi-particle spectrum and the vortex core structure of a single vortex in quasi 2D s-wave superconductors for small $p_Fξ_0$, where $p_F$ is the Fermi momentum and $ξ_0=v_F/Δ_0$ is the coherence length($\hbar=1$). In particular we find that the number of bound states decreases rapidly for decreasing $p_Fξ_0$. Also for $p_Fξ_0\sim 1$, the Kramer-Pesch effect stops around $T/T_c\simeq 0.3$.

Novel vortex lattice transition in d-wave superconductors

We study the vortex state in a magnetic field parallel to the $c$ axis in the framework of the extended Ginzburg Landau equation. We find the vortex acquires a fourfold modulation proportional to $\cos(4ϕ)$ where $ϕ$ is the angle ${\bf r}$ makes with the $a$-axis. This term gives rise to an attractive interaction between two vortices when they are aligned parallel to $(1,1,0)$ or $(1,-1,0)$. We predict the first order vortex lattice transition at $B=H_{cr}\sim κ^{-1} H_{c2}(t)$ from triangular into the square lattice tilted by $45^\circ$ from the $a$ axis. This gives the critical field $H_{cr}$ a few Tesla for YBCO and Bi2212 monocrystals at low temperatures ($T\leq 10 K$).

Vortex lattice transition in D-wave superconductors

Making use of the extended Ginzburg Landau theory, which includes the fourth order derivative term, we study the vortex state in a magnetic field parallel to the $ c$ axis. The vortex core structure is distorted due to this higher order term, which reveals t he fourfold symmetry. Futher, this distortion gives rise to the core interaction energy, which favo rs a square lattice tilted by $45^\circ$ from the $a$ axis. The critical field of this transition is determined. The magnetization diverges at the transition. This suggests the transition is of the fi rst order.

Phason modes in spin-density wave in the presence of long-range Coulomb interaction

We study the effect of long-range Coulomb interaction on the phason in spin-density wave (SDW) within mean field theory. In the longitudinal limit and in the absence of SDW pinning the phason is completely absorbed by the plasmon due to the Anderson-Higgs mechanism. In the presence of SDW pinning or when the wave vector {\bf q} is tilted from the chain direction, though the plasmon still almost exhausts the optical sum rule, another optical mode appears at $ω< 2Δ(T)$, with small optical weight. This low frequency mode below the SDW gap may be accessible to electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).
