Exotic Ground State Phases of $S=1/2$ Heisenberg $Δ$-Chain with Ferromagnetic Main Chain

The ground state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg frustrated $Δ$-chain with a ferromagnetic main chain is investigated. In addition to the ferromagnetic phase, various nonmagnetic ground states are found. If the ferromagnetic coupling between apical spins and the main chain is strong, this model is approximated by a spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic chain and the spin quadrupolar phase with spin-2 gapless excitation is realized in addition to the Haldane and ferromagnetic phases. In the regime where the coupling between the apical spins and the main chain is weak, the numerical results which suggest the possibility of a series of phase transitions among different nonmagnetic phases are obtained. Physical pictures of these phases are discussed based on the numerical results.

Finite Temperature Properties of the Mixed Diamond Chain with Spins 1 and 1/2

We formulate statistical mechanics for the mixed diamond chain with spins of magnitudes 1 and 1/2. Owing to a series of conservation laws, any eigenstate of this system is decomposed into eigenstates of finite odd-length spin-1 chains. The ground state undergoes five quantum phase transitions with varying the parameter $λ$ controlling frustration. We obtain the values of the residual entropy and the Curie constant which characterize each phase and phase boundary at low temperatures. We further find various characteristic finite-temperature properties such as the nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, the multipeak structure in the $λ$-dependence of entropy, the plateau-like temperature dependence of entropy and the multipeak structure of specific heat.

Quantum Phase Transitions in Alternating-Bond Mixed Diamond Chains with Spins 1 and 1/2

We investigate the mixed diamond chain composed of spins 1 and 1/2 when the exchange interaction is alternatingly distorted. Depending on the strengths of frustration and distortion, this system has various ground states. Each ground state consists of an array of spin clusters separated by singlet dimers by virtue of an infinite number of local conservation laws. We determine the ground state phase diagram by numerically analyzing each spin cluster. In particular for strong distortion, we find an infinite series of quantum phase transitions by the cluster expansion method and conformal field theory. This leads to the infinite series of steps in the behavior of the Curie constant and residual entropy.

Exact spin-cluster ground states in a mixed diamond chain

The mixed diamond chain is a frustrated Heisenberg chain composed of successive diamond-shaped units with two kinds of spins of magnitudes S and S/2 (S: integer). Ratio $lambda$ of two exchange parameters controls the strength of frustration. With varying $lambda$, the Haldane state and several spin cluster states appear as the ground state. A spin cluster state is a tensor product of exact local eigenstates of cluster spins. We prove that a spin cluster state is the ground state in a finite interval of $lambda$. For S=1, we numerically determine the total phase diagram consisting of five phases.

Critical Properties of Spin-1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains with Bond Alternation and Uniaxial Single-Ion-Type Anisotropy

One dimensional S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with bond alternation and uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy are studied by numerical exact diagonalization of finite size systems. We calculate the ground state phase diagram using the twisted boundary condition method for $D\geq 0$. The ground states of this model contain the Haldane state, large-D state and the dimer state. Using conformal field theory and the level spectroscopy method, we calculate the D and $δ$-dependence of the Luttinger liquid paraments K and the critical exponent $ν$ of the energy gap.

Disordered ground states in a quantum frustrated spin chain with side chains

We study a frustrated mixed spin chain with side chains, where the spin species and the exchange interactions are spatially varied. A nonlinear sigma model method is formulated for this model, and a phase diagram with two disordered spin-gap phases is obtained for typical cases. Among them we examine the case with a main chain consisting of an alternating array of spin-1 and spin-1/2 sites and side chains each of a single spin-1/2 site in great detail. Based on numerical, perturbational, and variational approaches, we propose a singlet cluster solid picture for each phase, where the ground state is expressed as a tensor product of local singlet states.

Frustration Induced Quantum Phases in Mixed Spin Chain with Frustrated Side Chains

A mixed Heisenberg spin chain with frustrated side chains is investigated by numerical and perturbational calculations. A frustration-induced quantum partially polarized ferrimagnetic phase and a nonmagnetic spin quadrupolar phase are found adjacent to the conventional Lieb-Mattis type ferrimagnetic phase or the nonmagnetic singlet cluster solid phases. The partially polarized ferrimagnetic phase has an incommensurate spin structure. Similar structures are commonly found in other frustration-induced partially polarized ferrimagnetic phases. Numerical results also suggest a series of almost critical nonmagnetic ground states in a highly frustrated regime if the side chain spins weakly couple to the main chain.

Ferrimagnetic and Long Period Antiferromagnetic Phases in High Spin Heisenberg Chains with D-Modulation

The ground state properties of the high spin Heisenberg chains with alternating single site anisotropy are investigated by means of the numerical exact daigonaization and DMRG method. It is found that the ferrimagnetic state appears between the Haldane phase and period doubled Néel phase for the integer spin chains. On the other hand, the transition from the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state into the ferrimagnetic state takes place for the half-odd-integer spin chains. In the ferrimagnetic phase, the spontaneous magnetization varies continuously with the modulation amplitude of the single site anisotropy. Eventually, the magnetization is locked to fractional values of the saturated magnetization. These fractional values satisfy the Oshikawa-Yamanaka-Affleck condition. The local spin profile is calculated to reveal the physical nature of each state. In contrast to the case of frustration induced ferrimagnetism, no incommensurate magnetic superstructure is found.

Ferrimagnetic States in S=1/2 Frustrated Heisenberg Chains with Period 3 Exchange Modulation

Ground state properties of the S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chain with period 3 exchange modulation are investigated using the numerical diagonalization and DMRG method. It is known that this model has a magnetization plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization M_s. On the other hand, the ground state is ferrimagnetic even in the absence of frustration if one of the nearest neighbour bond is ferromagnetic and others are antiferromagnetic. In the present work, we show that this ferrimagnetic state continues to the region in which all bonds are antiferromagnetic if frustration is strong. This state further continues to the above mentioned 1/3-plateau state. In between, we also find the noncollinear ferrimagnetic phase in which the spontaneous magnetization is finite but less than M_s/3. The intuitive interpretation for the phase diagram is given and the physical properties of these phases are discussed.

Field Induced Multiple Reentrant Quantum Phase Transitions in Randomly Dimerized Antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg Chains

The multiple reentrant quantum phase transitions in the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with random bond alternation in the magnetic field are investigated by the density matrix renormalization group method combined with the interchain mean field approximation. It is assumed that the odd-th bond is antiferromagnetic with strength $J$ and even-th bond can take the values ${\JS}$ and ${\JW}$ $ ({\JS} > J > {\JW} > 0)$ randomly with probability $p$ and $1-p$, respectively. The pure version ($p=0$ and $p=1$) of this model has a spin gap but exhibits a field induced antiferromagnetism in the presence of interchain coupling if Zeeman energy due to the magnetic field exceeds the spin gap. For $0 < p < 1$, the antiferromagnetism is induced by randomness at small field region where the ground state is disordered due to the spin gap in the pure case. At the same time, this model exhibits randomness induced plateaus at several values of magnetization. The antiferromagnetism is destroyed on the plateaus. As a consequence, we find a series of reentrant quantum phase transitions between the transverse antiferromagnetic phases and disordered plateau phases with the increase of the magnetic field for moderate strength of interchain coupling. Above the main plateaus, the magnetization curve consists of a series of small plateaus and the jumps between them, It is also found that the antiferromagnetism is induced by infinitesimal interchain coupling at the jumps between the small plateaus. We conclude that this antiferromagnetism is supported by the mixing of low lying excited states by the staggered interchain mean field even though the spin correlation function is short ranged in the ground state of each chain.

Emergence of Long Period Antiferromagnetic Orders from Haldane Phase in S=1 Heisenberg Chains with D-Modulation

The effect of spatial modulation of the single-site anisotropy D on the ground state of the S=1 Heisenberg chains is investigated. In the case of period 2 modulation, it is found that the phase diagram contains the Haldane phase, large-D phase, Neel phase of udud-type and u0d0-type. It is shown that the hidden antiferromagnetic order in the Haldane phase compatible with the spatial modulation of D-term get frozen resulting in the emergence of various types of Neel orders. The investigation of the model with longer period D-modulation also confirms this picture.

Quantum vs. Classical Magnetization Plateaus of S=1/2 Frustrated Heisenberg Chains

The competition between quantum and classical magnetization plateaus of S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chains with modified exchange couplings is investigated. The conventional S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chains is known to exhibit a 3-fold degenerate udu-type classical plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization accompanied by the spontaneous Z_3 translational symmetry breakdown. The stability of this plateau phase against period 3 exchange modulation which favors the 00u-type quantum plateau state (00= singlet dimer) is studied by bosonization, renormalization group and numerical diagonalization methods. The ground state phase diagram and the spin configuration in each phase are numerically determined. The translationally invariant Valence Bond Solid-type model with 4-spin and third neighbor interactions, which has the exact 00u-type quantum plateau state, is also presented. The phase transition to the classical udu-type ground state is also observed by varying the strength of 4-spin and third neighbor interactions. The relation between these two types of models with quantum plateau states is discussed.

Real Space Renormalization Group Study of the S=1/2 XXZ Chains with Fibonacci Exchange Modulation

Ground state properties of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ chain with Fibonacci exchange modulation are studied using the real space renormalization group method for strong modulation. The quantum dynamical critical behavior with a new universality class is predicted in the isotropic case. Combining our results with the weak coupling renormalization group results by Vidal et al., the ground state phase diagram is obtained.

New Universality Class in the S=1/2 Fibonacci Heisenberg Chains

Low energy properties of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with Fibonacci exchange modulation are studied using the real space renormalization group method for strong exchange modulation. It is found that the ground state of this model belongs to a new universality class with logarithmically divergent dynamical exponent which is neither like Fibonacci XY chains nor like XY chains with relevant aperiodicity.

Bond Operator Mean Field Approach to the Magnetization Plateaux in Quantum Antiferromagnets -- Application to the S=1/2 Coupled Dimerized Zigzag Heisenberg Chains

The magnetization plateaux in two dimensionally coupled S=1/2 dimerized zigzag Heisenberg chains are investigated by means of the bond operator mean field approximation. In the absence of the interchain coupling, this model is known to have a plateau at half of the saturation magnetization accompanied by the spontanuous translational symmetry breakdown. The parameter regime in which the plateau appears is reproduced well within the present approximation. In the presence of the interchain coupling, this plateau is shown to be suppressed. This result is also supported by the numerical diagonalization calculation.

Ground State and Magnetization Process of the Mixture of Bond-Alternating and Uniform S=1/2 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

The mixture of bond-alternating and uniform S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains is investigated by the density matrix renormalization group method. The ground state magnetization curve is calculated and the exchange parameters are determined by fitting to the experimentally measured magnetization curve of \CuCl$_{2x}$Br$_{2(1-x)}$($γ$-pic)$_2$. The low field behavior of the magnetization curve and low temperature behavior of the magnetic susceptibility are found to be sensitive to whether the bond-alternation pattern (parity) is fixed all over the sample or randomly distributed. The both quantities are compatible with the numerical results for the random parity model.

Random Magnetism in $S=1/2$ Heisenberg Chains with Bond Alternation and Randomness on the Strong Bonds

The $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chains with bond alternation and randomness on the strong bonds are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. It is assumed that the odd-th bond is antiferromagnetic with strength $J$ and even-th bond can take the values $\JA$ and $\JF$ $ (\JA > J > 0 > \JF)$ randomly. The ground state of this model interpolates between the Haldane and dimer phases via a randomness dominated intermediate phase. Based on the scaling of the low energy spectrum and mean field treatment of the interchain coupling, it is found that the magnetic long range order is induced by randomness in the intermediate regime. In the magnetization curves, there appears a plateau at the fractional value of the saturated magnetization. The fine structures of the magnetization curves and low energy spectrum are understood based on the cluster picture. The relation with the recent experiment for (CH$_3)_2$CHNH$_3$Cu(Cl$_x$Br$_{1-x})_3$ is discussed.

Ground State Phase Diagram of S=1 XXZ Chains with Uniaxial Single-Ion-Type Anisotropy

One dimensional S=1 XXZ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy are studied by numerical exact diagonalization of finite size systems. The numerical data are analyzed using conformal field theory, the level spectroscopy, phenomenological renormalization group and finite size scaling method. We thus present the first quantitatively reliable ground state phase diagram of this model. The ground states of this model contain the Haldane phase, large-D phase, Néel phase, two XY phases and the ferromagnetic phase. There are four different types of transitions between these phases: the Brezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type transitions, the Gaussian type transitions, the Ising type transitions and the first order transitions. The location of these critical lines are accurately determined.
