Magnetization Plateaux in Random Frustrated S=1/2 Heisenberg Chains

The $S=1/2$ frustrated Heisenberg chains with bond alternation is known to exhibit a magnetization plateau at half of the saturation magnetization $\Ms$ accompanied by the spontanuous translational symmetry breakdown. The effect of randomness on the magnetization process of this model is investigated. First we consider the mixture of the two kinds of chains both of which possess the $\Ms/2$-plateau in the common interval of the magnetization field. The plateau at $\Ms/2$ is found to vanish immediately if the randomness is switched on in agreement with Totsuka's prediction. The small plateau also appears near the saturation field due to the localization of inverted spins around the minority bond. On the other hand, if the stronger bond is replaced by the ferromagnetic bonds randomly, the randomness induced fractional plateau appears as in the nonfrustrated case. The plateau at $\Ms/2$ does not simply vanish but shifts and splits into two smaller plateaux. The magnetization on this plateau varies nonlinearly with $1-p$. The physical origin of this behavior is explained based on the strong coupling picture.

Ground State Phase Diagram of the Distorted S=1 Kagomé Heisenberg Antiferromagnets with Single-site Anisotropy

The ground state phase transitions in the distorted S=1 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) with single-site anisotropy D are studied by the numerical exact diagonalization method. For strong easy plane anisotropy, the hexgonal singlet solid (HSS) ground state of the uniform KHAF is destroyed and large-D state is realized. The quantum phase transition between these two states is analogous to the Haldane-large-D transition in the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The combined effect of the sqrt(3) times sqrt(3) lattice distortion and single site anisotropy is also investigated. The ground state phase diagram expected from the numerical results is presented. The presence of this transition is consistent with the HSS picture of the ground state of the uniform S=1 KHAF and supports its validity.

Magnetization Process of the S=1 and 1/2 Uniform and Distorted Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

The magnetization process of the S=1 and 1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is studied by means of the numerical exact diagonalization method. It is found that the magnetization curve at zero temperature has a plateau at 1/3 of the full magnetization. In the presence of $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ lattice distortion, this plateau is enhanced and eventually the ferrimagnetic state is realized. There also appear the minor plateaux above the main plateau. The physical origin of these phenomena is discussed.

Ground State Phase Transition in the S=1 Distorted Kagomé Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

The ground state phase transition in the distorted S=1 kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) is studied by means of the perturbational calculation and numerical exact diagonalization method. For strong $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ lattice distortion, the hexgonal singlet solid (HSS) ground state of the uniform KHAF is destroyed and new singlet state, large HSS (LHSS) state, which is globally different from the HSS state is realized. The quantum phase transition between these two singlet states is analogous to the Haldane-dimer transition in the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The presence of this transition supports the validity of the HSS picture of the ground state of the uniform S=1 KHAF.

Quasiperiodic Hubbard chains

Low energy properties of half-filled Fibonacci Hubbard models are studied by weak coupling renormalization group and density matrix renormalization group method. In the case of diagonal modulation, weak Coulomb repulsion is irrelevant and the system behaves as a free Fibonacci chain, while for strong Coulomb repulsion, the charge sector is a Mott insulator and the spin sector behaves as a uniform Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. The off-diagonal modulation always drives the charge sector to a Mott insulator and the spin sector to a Fibonacci antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain.

Magnetization plateaus and phase diagram in polymerized S=1/2 XXZ chains

The magnetization plateaus of $p$-merized $S=1/2$ XXZ chains are studied for general values of $p$. Two plateau-non-plateau critical lines and one plateau-plateau critical line are found for each value of $p$. The universality class of the plateau-non-plateau transition belongs to Brezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type and that of the plateau-plateau transition, to the Gaussian type. The critical points are determined by level spectroscopic analysis of the numerical diagonalization results for $4 \le p \le 8$. The multicritical points are calculated using the integral equations based on the Bethe ansatz solution of the XXZ model. The behavior of multicritical points are analyzed in detail for large $p$. It is found that the plateau region is enhanced with the increase of periodicity $p$ although the non-plateau region persists as far as $p$ is finite.

Ground State and Elementary Excitations of the S=1 Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Low energy spectrum of the S=1 kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) is studied by means of exact diagonalization and the cluster expansion. The magnitude of the energy gap of the magnetic excitation is consistent with the recent experimental observation for \mpynn. In contrast to the $S=1/2$ KHAF, the non-magnetic excitations have finite energy gap comparable to the magnetic excitation. As a physical picture of the ground state, the hexagon singlet solid state is proposed and verified by variational analysis.

Magnetization plateaus in antiferromagnetic-(ferromagnetic)_{n} polymerized S=1/2 XXZ chains

The plateau-non-plateau transition in the antiferromagnetic-(ferromagnetic)$_{n}$ polymerized $S=1/2$ XXZ chains under the magnetic field is investigated. The universality class of this transition belongs to the Brezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type. The critical points are determined by level spectroscopy analysis of the numerical diagonalization data for $4 \leq p \leq 13$ where $p(\equiv n+1)$ is the size of a unit cell. It is found that the critical strength of ferromagnetic coupling decreases with $p$ for small $p$ but increases for larger enough $p$. It is also found that the plateau for large $p$ is wide enough for moderate values of exchange coupling so that it should be easily observed experimentally. This is in contrast to the plateaus for $p = 3$ chains which are narrow for a wide range of exchange coupling even away from the critical point.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the S=1/2 Anisotropic Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains with Quasiperiodic Exchange Modulation

The low energy behavior of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic XY-like XXZ chains with precious mean quasiperiodic exchange modulation is studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. It is found that the energy gap of the chain with length N scales as $\exp (-cN^ω)$ with nonuniversal exponent $ω$ if the Ising component of the exhange coupling is antiferromagnetic. This behavior is expected to be the characteristic feature of the quantum spin chains with relevant aperiodicity. This is in contrast to the XY chain for which the precious mean exchange modulation is marginal and the gap scales as $N^{-z}$. On the contrary, it is also verified that the energy gap scales as $N^{-1}$ if the Ising component of the exhange coupling is ferromagnetic. Our results are not only consistent with the recent bosonization analysis of Vidal, Mouhanna and Giamarchi but also clarify the nature of the strong coupling regime which is inaccesssible by the bosonization approach.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the Haldane Phase in Random One-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

It is conjectured that the Haldane phase of the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and the $S=1/2$ ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain is stable against any strength of randomness, because of imposed breakdown of translational symmetry. This conjecture is confirmed by the density matrix renormalization group calculation of the string order parameter and the energy gap distribution.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the $S=1/2$ Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains with Quasiperiodic Exchange Modulation

The low energy behavior of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with precious mean quasiperiodic exchange modulation is studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. Based on the scaling behavior of the energy gap distribution, it is found that the ground state of this model belongs to the universality class different from that of the XY chain for which the precious mean exchange modulation is marginal. This result is consistent with the recent bosonization analysis of Vidal et al.

Ground State Phase Diagram of the One Dimensional S=1/2 XXZ Model with Dimerization and Quadrumerization

The one dimensional S=1/2 XXZ model with dimerization (1-j) and quadrumerization δis studied by the numerical exact diagonalization of finite size systems. Using the conformal field theory and the level spectroscopy method, we calculate the ground state phase diagram with XY-like anisotropy Δ(0<Δ<1). The ground states of this model contain the Haldane state, S=1 dimer state, S=1 large-D state and S=1/2 dimer state as limiting cases. The Δand δ-dependence of the critical exponent νof the energy gap is determined from the conformal dimensions of excited states.

Magnetization Plateaus in One Dimensional $Š=1/2$ Heisenberg Model with Dimerization and Quadrumerization

The one dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with dimerization ($1-j$) and quadrumerization ($δ$) in the magnetic field is studied by means of the numerical exact diagonalization of finite size systems and the conformal field theory. It is found that the magnetization plateau at half of the saturation value exists for $δ\neq 0$. For $δ= 0$, this model is described by the conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$ at this value of magnetization. The critical exponent $ν$ which characterizes the $δ$-dependence of the width of the plateau is calculated using the level spectroscopy method. The $j$-dependence of the critical exponent $ν$ is found to be non-monotonic and discontinuous at $j = 0$. The effective theory of the magnetization plateau is also presented for various limiting cases.

Ground State Properties of One Dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg Model with Dimerization and Quadrumerization

The one dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg model with dimerization and quadrumerization is studied by means of the numerical exact diagonalization of finite size systems. Using the phenomenological renormalization group and finite size scaling law, the ground state phase diagram is obtained in the isotropic case. It exhibits a variety of the ground states which contains the S=1 Haldane state, S=1 dimer state and S=1/2 dimer state as limiting cases. The gap exponent $ν$ is also calculated which coincides with the value for the dimerization transition of the isotropic Heisenberg chain. In the XY limit, the phase diagram is obtained analytically and the comparison is made with the isotropic case.

Dimer Expansion Study of the Bilayer Square Lattice Frustrated Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

The ground state of the square lattice bilayer quantum antiferromagnet with nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbour intralayer interaction is studied by means of the dimer expansion method up to the 6-th order in the interlayer exchange coupling $J_3$. The phase boundary between the spin-gap phase and the magnetically ordered phase is determined from the poles of the biased Padé approximants for the susceptibility and the inverse energy gap assuming the universality class of the 3-dimensional classical Heisenberg model. For weak frustration, the critical interlayer coupling decreases linearly with $α(= J_2/J_1)$. The spin-gap phase persists down to $J_3=0$ (single layer limit) for $0.45 \simleq α\simleq 0.65$. The crossover of the short range order within the disordered phase is also discussed.

Interacting Boson Theory of the Magnetization Process of the Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Alternating Heisenberg Chain

The low temperature magnetization process of the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is studied using the interacting boson approximation. In the low field regime and near the saturation field, the spin wave excitations are approximated by the $δ$ function boson gas for which the Bethe ansatz solution is available. The finite temperature properties are calculated by solving the integral equation numerically. The comparison is made with Monte Carlo calculation and the limit of the applicability of the present approximation is discussed.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of Random Dimerized Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

The effect of dimerization on the random antiferomagnetic Heisenberg chain with spin 1/2 is studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. The ground state energy, the energy gap distribution and the string order parameter are calculated. Using the finite size scaling analysis, the dimerization dependence of the these quantities are obtained. The ground state energy gain due to dimerization behaves as $u^a$ with $a > 2$ where $u$ denotes the degree of dimerization, suggesting the absence of spin-Peierls instability. It is explicitly shown that the string long range order survives even in the presence of randomness. The string order behaves as $u^{2β}$ with $β\sim 0.37$ in agreement with the recent prediction of real space renormalization group theory ($β=(3-\sqrt{5})/2 \simeq 0.382$). The physical picture of this behavior in this model is also discussed.

Low Energy Properties of the Random Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain

The low energy properties of the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are studied by means of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and real space renormalization group (RSRG) method for finite chains. The results of the two methods are consistent with each other. The deviation of the gap distribution from that of the random singlet phase and the formation of the large-spin state is observed even for relatively small systems. For a small fraction of the ferromagnetic bond, the effect of the crossover to the random singlet phase on the low temperature susceptibility and specific heat is discussed. The crossover concentration of the ferromagnetic bond is estimated from the numerical data.
