Vortex phase diagram in trapped Bose-Einstein condensation

The vortex phase diagram in the external rotation frequency versus temperature is calculated for dilute Bose-Einstein condensed gases. It is determined within the Bogoliubov-Popov theory for a finite temperature where the condensate and non-condensate fractions are treated in an equal footing. The temperature dependences of various thermodynamic instability lines for the vortex nucleation are computed to construct the phase diagram. Experiments are proposed to resolve a recent controversy on the vortex creation problem associated with the quantized vortex observation in $^{87}$Rb atom gases.

Quantum Vortex in a Vectorial Bose-Einstein Condensate

Quantum vortices in the multi-component Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) are investigated theoretically. It is found that three kinds of the vortex configurations are possible and their physical properties are discussed in details, including the density distribution and the spin texture. By using the Bogoliubov theory extended to the three component BEC, the collective modes for these vortices are evaluated. The local vortex stability for these vortices are examined in light of the existence of the negative eigenvalue, yielding a narrow magnetization window for the local intrinsic stable region where the multi-components work together to stabilize a vortex in a self-organized way.

Vortex Structure in Superconducting Stripe States

The vortex structure in superconducting stripe states is studied according to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory on the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor sites pairing interaction. The vortex is trapped at the outside region of the stripe line, where the superconductivity is weak. The superconducting coherence length along the stripe direction becomes long. There are no eminent low-energy electronic states even near the vortex core. These characters resemble the Josephson vortex in layered superconductors under a parallel field.

Theory of Ferromagnetic Superconductivity

It is argued that the pairing symmetry realized in a ferromagnetic superconductor UGe$_2$ must be a non-unitary triplet pairing. This particular state is free from the Pauli limitation and can survive under a huge internal molecular filed. To check our identification we examine its basic properties and several experiments are proposed. In particular, the external field is used to raise $T_c$ by controlling the internal spontaneous dipole field.

Spin and charge excitations in incommensurate spin density waves

Collective excitations both for spin- and charge-channels are investigated in incommensurate spin density wave (or stripe) states on two-dimensional Hubbard model. By random phase approximation, the dynamical susceptibility χ(q,ω) is calculated for full range of (q,ω) with including all higher harmonics components. An intricate landscape of the spectra in χ(q,ω) is obtained. We discuss the anisotropy of the dispersion cones for spin wave excitations, and for the phason excitation related to the motion of the stripe line. Inelastic neutron experiments on Cr and its alloys and stripe states of underdoped cuprates are proposed.

Double Phase Transitions in Magnetized Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensation

It is investigated theoretically that magnetized Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) with the internal (spin) degrees of freedom exhibits a rich variety of phase transitions, depending on the sign of the interaction in the spin channel. In the antiferromagnetic interaction case there exist always double BEC transitions from single component BEC to multiple component BEC. In the ferromagnetic case BEC becomes always unstable at a lower temperature, leading to a phase separation. The detailed phase diagram for the temperature vs the polarization, the spatial spin structure, the distribution of non-condensates and the excitation spectrum are examined for the harmonically trapped systems.

Site-selective nuclear magnetic relaxation time in a superconducting vortex state

The temperature and field dependences of the site-selective nuclear spin relaxation time T_1 around vortices are studied comparatively both for s-wave and d-wave superconductors, based on the microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. Reflecting low energy electronic excitations associated with the vortex core, the site selective temperature dependences deviate from those of the zero-field case, and T_1 becomes faster with approaching the vortex core. In the core region, T_1^{-1} has a new peak below the superconducting transition temperature T_c. The field dependence of the overall T_1(T) behaviors for s-wave and d-wave superconductors is investigated and analyzed in terms of the local density of states. The NMR study by the resonance field dependence may be a new method to probe the spatial resolved vortex core structure in various conventional and unconventional superconductors.

Electronic Structure of Stripes in Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Focusing on La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}, we study the stripe structure by the self-consistent mean-field theory of the Hubbard model. By introducing the realistic Fermi surface topology, the SDW-gapped insulator is changed to metallic. The solitonic features of the stripe structure and the contribution of the mid-gap states are presented. We consider the band dispersion, the local density of states, the spectral weight, and the optical conductivity, associated with the solitonic structure. These results may provide important information for the experimental research of the stripe structure, such as the angle-resolved photoemission experiments. The ``Fermi surface'' shape is changed depending on the ratio of the incommensurability delta and the hole density n_h. In real space, only the stripe region is metallic when delta/n_h is large.

Spin triplet superconductivity with line nodes in Sr2RuO4

Several possible odd-parity states are listed up group-theoretically and examined in light of recent experiments on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Those include some of the $f$-wave pairing states, ${\mib d}({\mib k})\propto{\hat{\mib z}} k_xk_y(k_x + {\rm i}k_y)$ and ${\hat{\mib z}} (k_x^2-k_y^2)(k_x + {\rm i}k_y)$ and other ${\hat{\mib z}} (k_x + {\rm i}k_y)\cos ck_z$ ($c$ is the $c$-axis lattice constant) as most plausible candidates. These are time-reversal symmetry broken states and have line nodes running either vertically (the former two) or horizontally (the latter), consistent with experiments. Characterizations of these states and other possibilities are given.

Creation of persistent current and vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate of alkali-metal atoms

It is shown theoretically that a persistent current can be continuously created in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of alkali atoms confined in a multiply connected region by making use of a spin-degree of freedom of the order parameter of a BEC. We demonstrate that this persistent current is easily transformed into a vortex. Relaxation processes of these BEC after the confining field is turned off are also studied so that our analyses are compared with time of flight experiments. The results are shown to clearly reflect the existence of a persistent current.

Orbital symmetry of a triplet pairing in a heavy Fermion superconductor UPt_3

The orbital symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in UPt_3 is identified by evaluating the directionally dependent thermalconductivity and ultrasound attenuation in the clean limit and compared with the existing data for both basal plane and the c-axis of a hexagonal crystal. The resulting two component orbital part expressed by (λ_x(k), λ_y(k)) is combined with the previously determined triplet spin part, leading to clean limit and compared with the existing data for both basal plane and the c-axis of a hexagonal crystal. The resulting two component orbital part expressed by (λ_x(k), λ_y(k)) is combined with the previously determined triplet spin part, leading to the order parameter of either the non-unitary bipolar state of the form: d(k) = b λ_x(k) + i j λ_y(k) or the unitary planar state of the form: d(k) = b λ_x(k) + j λ_y(k) where b \perp j = c, or a with the hexagonal unit vectors a, b and c. The d vector is rotatable in the plane spanned by a and c perpendicular to b under weak applied c-axis field because of the weak spin orbit coupling. Experiments are proposed to distinguish between the equally possible these states.

A simple method to create a vortex in Bose-Einstein condensate of alkali atoms

Bose-Einstein condensation in alkali atoms has materialized quite an interesting system, namely a condensate with a spin degree of freedom. In analogy with the A-phase of the superfluid $^3$He, numerous textures with nonvanishing vorticity have been proposed. In the present paper, interesting properties of such spin textures are analyzed. We propose a remarkably simple method to create a vortex state of a BEC in alkali atoms.

Spin domain formation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensation

The spatial structure of the spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with the spin degrees of freedom is analyzed based on the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GP) in the light of the present spin domain experiment on m_F=\pm 1, and 0 of the hyperfine state F=1 of ^{23}Na atom gases. The GP solutions in three- and one-spatial dimensional cases reproduce the observed spin domain structures, revealing the length scale associated with the existence of the weak interaction of the spin-spin channel, other than the ordinary coherence length related to the density-density channel. The obtained domain structure in GP is compared with the result in Thomas-Fermi approximation. The former solution is found to better describe the observed features than the latter.

Instability of Non-vortex State toward a Quantized Vortex in Bose-Einstein Condensate under External Rotation

The instability condition of the non-vortex state toward vortex formation is exa mined within the Bogoliubov theory when a Bose-Einstein condensate is under exte rnally forced rotation. The obtained critical angular velocity combined with the previous stability cond itions for a votex yields a detailed phase diagram in the critical velocity vs t he system parameter. This facilitates vortex formation experiments for alkali atom gases confined in a harmonic potential.

Field dependence of the vortex structure in d-wave and s-wave superconductors

We study the vortex structure and its field dependence within the framework of the quasi-classical Eilenberger theory to find the difference between the d_{x^2-y^2}- and s-wave pairings. We clarify the effect of the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave nature and the vortex lattice effect on the vortex structure of the pair potential, the internal field and the local density of states. The d_{x^2-y^2}-wave pairing introduces a fourfold-symmetric structure around each vortex core. With increasing field, their contribution becomes significant to the whole structure of the vortex lattice state, depending on the vortex lattice's configuration. It is reflected in the form factor of the internal field, which may be detected by small angle neutron scattering, or the resonance line shape of mu-SR and NMR experiments. We also study the induced s- and d_{xy}-wave components around the vortex in d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors.

Stripe structure, spectral feature and soliton gap in high Tc cuprates

We show that the lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} can be described in terms of a stripe magnetic structure or soliton picture. The internal relationship between the recent neutron observation of the diagonal (x=0.05) to vertical (x >= 0.06) stripe transition, which was predicted, and the concomitant metal-insulator transition is clarified by this solitonic physics. The phase diagram with the unidentified transition lines between antiferromagnetic to stripe phases, the doping dependence of the modulation period, the origin of the mid-infrared optical absorption are investigated comparatively with other single layer systems: La_{2-x}Sr_{x}NiO_{4} and (La,Nd)_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}. The novel type of quasi-particles and holes is fully responsible for metallic conduction and ultimately superconductivity.

Vortex Stabilization in Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensate Under Rotation

The stability of a quantized vortex state in Bose-Einstein condensation is examined within Bogoliubov theory for alkali atom gases confined in a harmonic potential under forced rotation. By solving the non-linear Bogoliubov equations coupled with the Gross-Pitavskii equation, the elementary excitations and the total energy of the systems are calculated as a function of rotation velocity. There are two distinct criteria of vortex stability; The position of the excitation energy levels relative to the condensate energy level yields the local stability criterion, and the total energy relative to that of the non-vortex state yields the global stability criterion. The vortex stability phase diagram in the rotation velocity vs the particle density of the system is obtained, allowing one to locate the appropriate region to observe the singly quantized vortex.
