Vortex stabilization in Bose-Einstein condensate of alkali atom gas

A quantized vortex in the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), which is known to be unstable intrinsically, is demonstrated theoretically to be stabilized by the finite temperature effect. The mean-field calculation of Popov approximation within the Bogoliubov theory is employed, giving rise to a self-consistent solution for BEC confined by a harmonic potential. Physical origin of this vortex stabilization is investigated. An equivalent effect is also proved to be induced by an additional pinning potential at the vortex center produced by a focused laser beam even at the lowest temperature. The self-consistent solutions give detailed properties of a stable vortex, such as the spatial profiles of the condensate and non-condensate, the particle current density around the core, the whole excitation spectrum, and their temperature dependences.

Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Confined Geometry with and without a Vortex

Various widely-used mean-field type theories for a dilute Bose gas are critically examined in the light of the recent discovery of Bose-Einstein condensation of atomic gases in a confined geometry. By numerically solving the mean-field equations within the framework of the Bogoliubov approximation both stationary non-uniform case and the vortex case under rotation in a cylindrically symmetric vessel are investigated. We obtain spatial structures of condensate, non-condensate, anomalous correlation. The low lying excitation spectra, the local density of states and the circulating current density in a vortex corresponding to various levels of mean-field theories are predicted.

Bose-Einstein condensation with internal degrees of freedom in alkali atom gases

The Bogoliubov theory is extended to a Bose-Einstein condensation with internal degrees of freedom, realized recently in $^{23}$Na gases where several hyperfine states are simultaneously cooled optically. Starting with a Hamiltonian constructed from general gauge and spin rotation symmetry principles fundamental equations for condensate are derived. The ground state where time reversal symmetry is broken in some case and low-lying collective modes, e.g. spin and density wave modes, are discussed. Novel vortex as a topological defect can be created experimentally.

Identification of Non-unitary triplet pairing in a heavy Fermion superconductor UPt_3

A NMR experiment recently done by Tou et al. on a heavy Fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ is interpreted in terms of a non-unitary spin-triplet pairing state which we have been advocating. The proposed state successfully explains various aspects of the seemingly complicated Knight shift behaviors probed for major orientations, including a remarkable d-vector rotation under weak fields. This entitles UPt$_3$ as the first example that a charged many body system forms a spin-triplet odd-par ity pairing at low temperatures and demonstrates unambiguously that the putative spin-orbit coupling in UPt$_3$ is weak.

Excitation spectrum in a cylindrical Bose-Einstein gas

Whole excitation spectrum is calculated within the Popov approximation of the Bogoliubov theory for a cylindrical symmetric Bose-Einstein gas trapped radially by a harmonic potential. The full dispersion relation and its temperature dependence of the zero sound mode propagating along the axial direction are evaluated in a self-consistent manner. The sound velocity is shown to depend not only on the peak density, but also on the axial area density. Recent sound velocity experiment on Na atom gas is discussed in light of the present theory.

Vortex lattice structure in a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor

The vortex lattice structure in a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor is investigated near the upper critical magnetic field in the framework of the Ginzburg Landau theory extended by including the correction terms such as the higher order derivatives derived from the Gor'kov equation. On lowering temperature, the unit cell shape of the vortex lattice gradually varies from a regular triangular lattice to a square lattice through the shape of an isosceles triangle. As for the orientation of the vortex lattice, the base of an isosceles triangle is along the a axis or the b axis of the crystal. The fourfold symmetric structure around a vortex core is also studied in the vortex lattice case. It is noted that these characteristic features appear even in the case the induced s-wave order parameter is absent around the vortex of the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductivity. We also investigate the effect of the induced s-wave order parameter. It enhances (suppresses) these characteristic features of the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor when the s-wave component of the interaction is attractive (repulsive).

Local density of states in the vortex lattice in a type II superconductor

Local density of states (LDOS) in the triangular vortex lattice is investigated based on the quasi-classical Eilenberger theory. We consider the case of an isotropic s-wave superconductor with the material parameter appropriate to NbSe_2. At a weak magnetic field, the spatial variation of the LDOS shows cylindrical structure around a vortex core. On the other hand, at a high field where the core regions substantially overlap each other, the LDOS is sixfold star-shaped structure due to the vortex lattice effect. The orientation of the star coincides with the experimental data of the scanning tunneling microscopy. That is, the ray of the star extends toward the nearest-neighbor (next nearest-neighbor) vortex direction at higher (lower) energy.

Ginzburg Landau theory for d-wave pairing and fourfold symmetric vortex core structure

The Ginzburg Landau theory for d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors is constructed, by starting from the Gor'kov equation with including correction terms up to the next order of ln(T_c/T). Some of the non-local correction terms are found to break the cylindrical symmetry and lead to the fourfold symmetric core structure, reflecting the internal degree of freedom in the pair potential. Using this extended Ginzburg Landau theory, we investigate the fourfold symmetric structure of the pair potential, current and magnetic field around an isolated single vortex, and clarify concretely how the vortex core structure deviates from the cylindrical symmetry in the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors.
