Non-Hermitian coherent coupling of nanomagnets by exchange spin waves

Non-Hermitian physics has recently attracted much attention in optics and photonics. Less explored is non-Hermitian magnonics that provides opportunities to take advantage of the inevitable dissipation of magnons or spin waves in magnetic systems. Here we demonstrate non-Hermitian coherent coupling of two distant nanomagnets by fast spin waves with sub-50 nm wavelengths. Magnons in two nanomagnets are unidirectionally phase-locked with phase shifts controlled by magnon spin torque and spin-wave propagation. Our results are attractive for analog neuromorphic computing that requires unidirectional information transmission.

Torque-induced dispersive readout in a weakly coupled hybrid system

We propose a quantum state readout mechanism of a weakly coupled qubit in dispersive regime. The hybrid system consists of ferromagnetic insulator and a superconducting qubit in a microwave cavity. The enhancement of the measurement sensitivity is achieved by exerting torque on the ferromagnetic insulator magnetization, which compensates the damping of the system leading to an exceptional point. The proposed machanism allows to measure the qubit state either via the transmission of the cavity or the FMR signal of the magnetic material.

Recurrent Neural Networks Made of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

Artificial intelligence based on artificial neural networks, which are originally inspired by the biological architectures of human brain, has mostly been realized using software but executed on conventional von Neumann computers, where the so-called von Neumann bottleneck essentially limits the executive efficiency due to the separate computing and storage units. Therefore, a suitable hardware platform that can exploit all the advantages of brain-inspired computing is highly desirable. Based upon micromagnetic simulation of the magnetization dynamics, we demonstrate theoretically and numerically that recurrent neural networks consisting of as few as 40 magnetic tunnel junctions can generate and recognize periodic time series after they are trained with an efficient machine-learning algorithm. With ultrahigh operating speed, nonvolatile memory and high endurance and reproducibility, spintronic devices are promising hardware candidates for neuromorphic computing.

Tuning Non-Gilbert-type damping in FeGa films on MgO(001) via oblique deposition

The ability to tailor the damping factor is essential for spintronic and spin-torque applications. Here, we report an approach to manipulate the damping factor of FeGa/MgO(001) films by oblique deposition. Owing to the defects at the surface or interface in thin films, two-magnon scattering (TMS) acts as a non-Gilbert damping mechanism in magnetization relaxation. In this work, the contribution of TMS was characterized by in-plane angular dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). It is demonstrated that the intrinsic Gilbert damping is isotropic and invariant, while the extrinsic mechanism related to TMS is anisotropic and can be tuned by oblique deposition. Furthermore, the two and fourfold TMS related to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) and magnetocrystalline anisotropy were discussed. Our results open an avenue to manipulate magnetization relaxation in spintronic devices.

Andreev spectroscopy of the triplet superconductivity state in Bi/Ni bilayer system

We calculate the Andreev spectroscopy between a ferromagnetic lead and Bi/Ni bilayer system for three types of superconducting states, including ABM state, ABM state mixing with S-wave state, ABM state mixing with pz-wave state. Among them, ABM state and ABM state mixing with S- wave state can obtain the Andreev conductance consistent with the point contact experiment[G. J. Zhao,et al, arXiv:1810.10403], but failed to explain the experiment of time-domain THz spectroscopy experiment[Prashant Chauhan,et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 017002(2019)]. Only the ABM state mixing with pz-wave state can explain both experiments. Besides, we reveal the conductance peak near the zero energy is induced by the surface state of the ABM phase. Our work may provides helpful clarification for understanding of recent experiments.

Enhancement of ultrafast demagnetization rate and Gilbert damping driven by femtosecond laser-induced spin currents in Fe81Ga19/Ir20Mn80 bilayers

In spintronics applications, ultrafast spin dynamics have to be controlled at femtosecond (fs) timescales via fs-laser radiation. At such ultrafast timescales, the effect of the Gilbert damping factor α on ultrafast demagnetization time should be considered. In previous explorations for the relationship between these two parameters, it was found that the theoretical calculations based on the local spin-flip scattering model do not agree with the experimental results. Here, we find that in Fe81Ga19(FeGa)/Ir20Mn80(IrMn) bilayers, the unconventional IrMn thickness dependence of α results from the competition between spin currents pumped from the ferromagnetic (FM) FeGa layer to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) IrMn layer and those pumped from the AFM layer to the FM layer. More importantly, we establish a proportional relationship between the change of the ultrafast demagnetization rate and the enhancement of Gilbert damping induced by the spin currents via interfacial spin chemical potential . Our work builds a bridge to connect the ultrafast demagnetization time and Gilbert damping in ultrafast photo-induced spin currents dominated systems, which not only explains the disagreement between experimental and theoretical results in the relation of τ_M with α, but provides further insight into ultrafast spin dynamics as well.

Cavity-mediated dissipative spin-spin coupling

We study dissipative spin-spin coupling in dispersive regime mediated by virtual photons in a microwave cavity. Dissipative coupling between magnetization of each magnetic material and the cavity photons is established by means of two phase shifted driving forces acting on each magnetization. We show that when only one of the magnetization is dissipatively coupled to the cavity, the cavity-mediated spin-spin coupling too, exhibits mode level attraction in the spectrum. By tuning the phase parameter at each ferromagnetic insulator we can shift the order of "dark" and "bright" collective modes with phase difference equal to 0 or π. Moreover, by selectively applying the phase shifted field it is possible to construct "dark" and "bright" collective modes with phase difference equal to \pm π/2:

Steady Bell state generation via magnon-photon coupling

We show that parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry can be spontaneously broken in the recently reported energy level attraction of magnons and cavity photons. In the $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phase, magnon and photon form a high-fidelity Bell state with maximum entanglement. This entanglement is steady and robust against the perturbation of environment, in contrast to the general wisdom that expects instability of the hybridized state when the symmetry is broken. This anomaly is further understood by the compete of non-Hermitian evolution and particle number conservation of the hybridized system. As a comparison, neither $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry broken nor steady magnon-photon entanglement is observed inside the normal level repulsion case. Our results may open a novel window to utilize magnon-photon entanglement as a resource for quantum technologies.

Noncollinearity-modulated electronic properties of the monolayer CrI$_3$

Introducing noncollinear magnetization into a monolayer CrI$_3$ is proposed to be an effective approach to modulate the local electronic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) magnetic material. Using first-principles calculation, we illustrate that both the conduction and valence bands in the monolayer CrI$_3$ are lowered down by spin spiral states. The distinct electronic structure of the monolayer noncollinear CrI$_3$ can be applied in nanoscale functional devices. As a proof of concept, we show that a magnetic domain wall can form a one-dimensional conducting channel in the 2D semiconductor via proper gating. Other possible applications such as electron-hole separation and identical quantum dots are also discussed.

Excitation of unidirectional exchange spin waves by a nanoscale magnetic grating

Magnon spintronics is a prosperous field that promises beyond-CMOS technology based on elementary excitations of the magnetic order that act as information carriers for future computational architectures. Unidirectional propagation of spin waves is key to the realization of magnonic logic devices. However, previous efforts to enhance the Damon-Eshbach-type nonreciprocity did not realize (let alone control) purely unidirectional propagation. Here we experimentally demonstrate excitations of unidirectional exchange spin waves by a nanoscale magnetic grating consisting of Co nanowires fabricated on an ultrathin yttrium iron garnet film. We explain and model the nearly perfect unidirectional excitation by the chirality of the magneto-dipolar interactions between the Kittel mode of the nanowires and the exchange spin waves of the film. Reversal of the magnetic configurations of film and nanowire array from parallel to antiparallel changes the direction of the excited spin waves. Our results raise the prospect of a chiral magnonic logic without the need for fragile surface states.

Thermal induced monochromatic microwave generation in magnon-polariton

We propose thermal induced generation of monochromatic microwave radiation in magnon-polariton. Mechanism of thermal to microwave energy transformation is based on intrinsic energy loss compensation of coupled magnon and microwave cavity oscillators by thermal induced "negative damping". A singularity at an exceptional point is achieved when at the critical value of "negative damping" the damping of the system is fully compensated. At the exceptional point, the input energy is equally distributed between the magnon and photon subsystems of the magnon-polariton. The efficiency of transformation of thermal energy into useful microwave radiation is estimated to be as large as 17 percent due to magnon-photon coupling mediated direct conversation of spin current into microwave photons.

Isotropic non-local Gilbert damping driven by spin currents in epitaxial Pd/Fe/MgO(001) films

Although both theoretical predications and experimental observations demonstrated that the damping factor is anisotropic at ferromagnet/semiconductor interface with robust interfacial spin-orbit coupling, it is not well understood whether non-local Gilbert damping driven by spin currents in heavy metal/ferromagnetic metal (HM/FM) bilayers is anisotropic or not. Here, we investigated the in-plane angular- and frequency- dependence of magnetic relaxation of epitaxial Fe/MgO(001) films with different capping layers of Pd and Cu. After disentangling the parasitic contributions, such as two-magnon scattering (TMS), mosaicity, and field-dragging effect, we unambiguously observed that both local and non-local Gilbert damping are isotropic in Fe(001) plane, suggesting that the pure spin currents absorption is independent of Fe magnetization orientation in the epitaxial Pd/Fe heterostructure. First principles calculation reveals that the effective spin mixing conductance of Pd/Fe interface is nearly invariant for different magnetization directions in good agreement with the experimental observations. These results offer a valuable insight into the transmission and absorption of pure spin currents, and facilitate us to utilize next-generation spintronic devices.

Interfacial spin Hall effect and spin swapping in Fe|Au bilayer from first principles

The interfaces in hybridized structures could give rise to rich phenomena, which open the way to novel devices with extraordinary performance. Here, we investigate the interface-related spin transport properties in Fe|Au bilayer based on first-principle calculation. We find that the spin Hall current in the Au side near the interface flows in the opposite direction to the bulk spin Hall current with the magnitude sensitive to the magnetization direction of Fe. This negative interfacial contribution is attributed to the spin dependent transmission within a few atomic layers, where a strong interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling exists. Surprisingly, the interfacial spin Hall currents are found to be not confined at the interface but extend tens of nanometers at low temperature, which is limited by momentum scattering and therefore much shorter than the spin diffusion length. In addition, the interfacial swapping spin currents, as a consequence of the spin precession under the interfacial Rashba field, are also obtained from our calculation and complete the full spin transport picture with all non-vanishing components. Our results suggest the importance of the interface engineering in spin-related transport in ferromagnetic|non-magnetic heterostructures and the possibility of manipulating the interfacial transport by the magnetization orientation of the magnetic layer.

Charge transport properties of the Majorana zero mode induced noncollinear spin selective Andreev reflection

We study the charge transport of the spin-selective Andreev reflection(SSAR) effect between a spin polarized scanning tunneling microscope(STM) tip and a Majorana zero mode(MZM). Considering both the MZM and the excited states, we calculate the conductance and the shot noise power of the noncollinear SSAR using scattering theory. We find the influence of first excited states cannot be avoided when the spin polarization direction of the STM tip and the MZM are not collinear. In this case, the first excited states give rise to inside peaks and change the conductance peak value at zero energy. Moreover, we numerically calculate the shot noise power and the Fano factor of the SSAR effect. Our calculation shows that the shot noise power and the Fano factor are related to the angle between the spin polarization direction of the STM tip and that of the MZM. These transport properties of the SSAR effect provide additional characteristics to detect the MZM via SSAR.

Synchronized spin-photon coupling in a microwave cavity

We study spin-photon coupling in cavity in the presence of relative phase shift between two ferromagnetic resonance driving forces. We show that the anticrossing gap can be manipulated by varying the relative phase. Increasing the phase difference leads to narrowing the anticrossing gap of hybridized modes and eventually to phase locked coupling at the value of relative phase of π: The FMR and cavity modes become phase locked and oscillate at the same frequency near the resonance frequency. Characteristic linewidth drop and transmission amplitude enhancement are demonstrated. The phase resolved spin-photon coupling can be used both for phase imaging and controlling coupling parameters.

Dynamic spin-lattice coupling and nematic fluctuations in NaFeAs

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study acoustic phonons and spin excitations in single crystals of NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron pnictide superconductors. NaFeAs exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at $T_s\approx 58$ K and a collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order at $T_N\approx 45$ K. While longitudinal and out-of-plane transverse acoustic phonons behave as expected, the in-plane transverse acoustic phonons reveal considerable softening on cooling to $T_s$, and then harden on approaching $T_N$ before saturating below $T_N$. In addition, we find that spin-spin correlation lengths of low-energy magnetic excitations within the FeAs layer and along the $c$-axis increase dramatically below $T_s$, and show weak anomaly across $T_N$. These results suggest that the electronic nematic phase present in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase is closely associated with dynamic spin-lattice coupling, possibly arising from the one-phonon-two-magnon mechanism.

Proper dissipative torques in antiferromagnetic dynamics

There is little doubt that the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetic systems is governed by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation or its generalization with various spin torques. In contrast, there are several sets of dynamic equations for two-sublattice antiferromagnets (AFMs) in literature that have different forms of dissipative torques and no proper dynamic equations for multi-sublattice AFMs and ferrimagnets in general. Here we introduce the general Rayleigh dissipation functional into the Lagrange equation and derive the proper form of the dissipative torques in the phenomenological equations for the AFMs with multiple sublattices. A new type of dissipative torque arising from inter-sublattice drag effect is discovered that has important influences on magnon lifetime and domain wall motion. In particular, our theory unifies different dynamic equations of AFMs in literature.

Observation of spin-orbit magnetoresistance in metallic thin films on magnetic insulators

A magnetoresistance effect induced by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction was predicted, but not yet observed, in bilayers consisting of normal metal and ferromagnetic insulator. Here, we present an experimental observation of this new type of spin-orbit magnetoresistance (SOMR) effect in a bilayer structure Cu[Pt]/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG), where the Cu/YIG interface is decorated with nanosize Pt islands. This new MR is apparently not caused by the bulk spin-orbit interaction because of the negligible spin-orbit interaction in Cu and the discontinuity of the Pt islands. This SOMR disappears when the Pt islands are absent or located away from the Cu/YIG interface, therefore we can unambiguously ascribe it to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction at the interface enhanced by the Pt decoration. The numerical Boltzmann simulations are consistent with the experimental SOMR results in the angular dependence of magnetic field and the Cu thickness dependence. Our finding demonstrates the realization of the spin manipulation by interface engineering.
