Understanding the Ising zigzag antiferromagnetism of FePS3 and FePSe3 monolayers

This study investigates the spin-orbital states of FePS3 and FePSe3 monolayers and the origin of their Ising zigzag AFM, using DFT, crystal field level diagrams, superexchange analyses, and parallel tempering MC simulations. Our calculations show that under the trigonal elongation of the FeS6 (FeSe6) octahedra, the $e_g^π$ doublet of the Fe 3d crystal field levels lies lower than the $a_{1g}$ singlet by about 108 meV (123 meV), which is much larger than the strength of Fe 3d SOC. Then, the half-filled minority-spin $e_g^π$ doublet of the high-spin Fe$^{2+}$ ions ($d^{5\uparrow,1\downarrow}$) splits by the SOC into the lower $L_{z+}$ and higher $L_{z-}$ states. The spin-orbital ground state $d^{5\uparrow}$$L_{z+}^{1\downarrow}$ formally with $S_z$ = 2 and $L_z$ = 1 gives the large z-axis spin/orbital moments of 3.51/0.76 $μ_{B}$ (3.41/0.67 $μ_{B}$) for FePS$_3$ (FePSe$_3$) monolayer, and both the moments are reduced by the strong (stronger) Fe 3d hybridizations with S 3p (Se 4p) states. As a result, FePS3 (FePSe3) monolayer has a huge perpendicular single-ion anisotropy energy of 19.4 meV (14.9 meV), giving an Ising-type magnetism. Moreover, via the maximally localized Wannier functions, we find that the first nearest neighboring (1NN) Fe-Fe pair has large hopping parameters in between some specific orbitals, and so does the 3NN Fe-Fe pair. In contrast, the 2NN Fe-Fe pair has much smaller hopping parameters and the 4NN Fe-Fe pair has negligibly small ones. Then, a combination of those hopping parameters and the superexchange picture can readily explain the computed strong 1NN ferromagnetic coupling and the strong 3NN antiferromagnetic one but the relatively much smaller 2NN antiferromagnetic coupling. Furthermore, our PTMC simulations give TN of 119 K for FePS3 monolayer and also predict for FePSe3 monolayer the same magnetic structure with a close or even higher TN.

SwinJSCC: Taming Swin Transformer for Deep Joint Source-Channel Coding

As one of the key techniques to realize semantic communications, end-to-end optimized neural joint source-channel coding (JSCC) has made great progress over the past few years. A general trend in many recent works pushing the model adaptability or the application diversity of neural JSCC is based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) backbone, whose model capacity is yet limited, inherently leading to inferior system coding gain against traditional coded transmission systems. In this paper, we establish a new neural JSCC backbone that can also adapt flexibly to diverse channel conditions and transmission rates within a single model, our open-source project aims to promote the research in this field. Specifically, we show that with elaborate design, neural JSCC codec built on the emerging Swin Transformer backbone achieves superior performance than conventional neural JSCC codecs built upon CNN, while also requiring lower end-to-end processing latency. Paired with two spatial modulation modules that scale latent representations based on the channel state information and target transmission rate, our baseline SwinJSCC can further upgrade to a versatile version, which increases its capability to adapt to diverse channel conditions and rate configurations. Extensive experimental results show that our SwinJSCC achieves better or comparable performance versus the state-of-the-art engineered BPG + 5G LDPC coded transmission system with much faster end-to-end coding speed, especially for high-resolution images, in which case traditional CNN-based JSCC yet falls behind due to its limited model capacity.

Braneworld sum rules and positive tension branes in a massive gravity

By taking advantage of the braneworld sum rules, we explore the feasibility of constructing a flat 3-brane scenario consisting solely of positive tension branes in a 5D extension of the Lorentz-violating massive gravity. It is found that the theory supports three distinct brane configurations, one of which is exactly what we expected, consisting solely of two positive tension branes. The cosmological problem of Randall-Sundrum-1 model and the gauge hierarchy problem can be solved in this model simultaneously. Furthermore, the analysis of linear perturbations reveals that the tensor, vector and scalar modes are all massive and share the same mass spectrum, except that the ground state of vector mode is absent. Moreover, the tensor and vector modes are robust, but the scalar mode is ghost-like. Interestingly, even though the Kaluza-Klein gravitons have an extremely small mass splitting scale, an estimation of the effective gravitational potential and production of these gravitons on the brane indicates that the phenomenology of the present model is equivalent to that of the 6D ADD model.

Multi-stream Transmission for Directional Modulation Network via Distributed Multi-UAV-aided Multi-active-IRS

Active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a revolutionary technique for the future 6G networks. The conventional far-field single-IRS-aided directional modulation(DM) networks have only one (no direct path) or two (existing direct path) degrees of freedom (DoFs). This means that there are only one or two streams transmitted simultaneously from base station to user and will seriously limit its rate gain achieved by IRS. How to create multiple DoFs more than two for DM? In this paper, single large-scale IRS is divided to multiple small IRSs and a novel multi-IRS-aided multi-stream DM network is proposed to achieve a point-to-point multi-stream transmission by creating $K$ ($\geq3$) DoFs, where multiple small IRSs are placed distributively via multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The null-space projection, zero-forcing (ZF) and phase alignment are adopted to design the transmit beamforming vector, receive beamforming vector and phase shift matrix (PSM), respectively, called NSP-ZF-PA. Here, $K$ PSMs and their corresponding beamforming vectors are independently optimized. The weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) algorithm is involved in alternating iteration for the optimization variables by introducing the power constraint on IRS, named WMMSE-PC, where the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm is used to solve the total PSM. To achieve a lower computational complexity, a maximum trace method, called Max-TR-SVD, is proposed by optimize the PSM of all IRSs. Numerical simulation results has shown that the proposed NSP-ZF-PA performs much better than Max-TR-SVD in terms of rate. In particular, the rate of NSP-ZF-PA with sixteen small IRSs is about five times that of NSP-ZF-PA with combining all small IRSs as a single large IRS. Thus, a dramatic rate enhancement may be achieved by multiple distributed IRSs.

IQ: Intrinsic measure for quantifying the heterogeneity in meta-analysis

Quantifying the heterogeneity is an important issue in meta-analysis, and among the existing measures, the $I^2$ statistic is the most commonly used measure in the literature. In this paper, we show that the $I^2$ statistic was, in fact, defined as problematic or even completely wrong from the very beginning. To confirm this statement, we first present a motivating example to show that the $I^2$ statistic is heavily dependent on the study sample sizes, and consequently it may yield contradictory results for the amount of heterogeneity. Moreover, by drawing a connection between ANOVA and meta-analysis, the $I^2$ statistic is shown to have, mistakenly, applied the sampling errors of the estimators rather than the variances of the study populations. Inspired by this, we introduce an Intrinsic measure for Quantifying the heterogeneity in meta-analysis, and meanwhile study its statistical properties to clarify why it is superior to the existing measures. We further propose an optimal estimator, referred to as the IQ statistic, for the new measure of heterogeneity that can be readily applied in meta-analysis. Simulations and real data analysis demonstrate that the IQ statistic provides a nearly unbiased estimate of the true heterogeneity and it is also independent of the study sample sizes.

Extraction of trans-helicity worm-gear distributions and opportunities at the Electron-Ion Collider in China

We present a global analysis of the trans-helicity worm-gear distribution function, $g_{1T}^\perp$, by fitting the longitudinal-transverse double spin asymmetry data of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The analysis is performed within the framework of transverse momentum dependent factorization and evolution. It is found that the $u$-quark favors a positive distribution and the $d$-quark favors a negative distribution, which is consistent with previous model calculations and phenomenological extractions. Based on the fit to existing world data, we also study the impact of the proposed electron-ion collider in China and conclude that it can significantly improve the precision of the worm-gear distribution function and hence enhance our understanding of nucleon spin structures.

Superexchange interactions and magnetic anisotropy in MnPSe$_3$ monolayer

Two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials are of great current interest for their promising applications in spintronics. In this work, using density functional theory calculations in combination with the maximally localized Wannier functions method and the magnetic anisotropy analyses, we study the electronic and magnetic properties of MnPSe$_3$ monolayer. Our results show that it is a charge transfer antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator. For this Mn$^{2+}$ $3d^5$ system, although it seems straightforward to explain the AF ground state using the direct exchange, we find that the near 90$^\circ$ Mn-Se-Mn charge transfer type superexchange plays a dominant role in stabilizing the AF ground state. Moreover, our results indicate that although the shape anisotropy favors an out-of-plane spin orientation, the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leads to the experimentally observed in-plane spin orientation. We prove that the actual dominant contribution to the magnetic anisotropy comes from the second-order perturbation of the SOC, by analyzing its distribution over the reciprocal space. Using the AF exchange and anisotropy parameters obtained from our calculations, our Monte Carlo simulations give the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}=47$ K for MnPSe$_3$ monolayer, which agrees with the experimental 40 K. Furthermore, our calculations show that under a uniaxial tensile (compressive) strain, Néel vector would be parallel (perpendicular) to the strain direction, which well reproduces the recent experiments. We also predict that $T_{\rm N}$ would be increased by a compressive strain.

FeS2 monolayer: a high valence and high-$T_{\rm C}$ Ising ferromagnet

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are of current great interest for their promising applications in spintronics. Strong magnetic coupling and anisotropy are both highly desirable for the achievement of a high temperature magnetic order. Here we propose the unusual high valent FeS$_2$ hexagonal monolayer as such a candidate for a strong Ising 2D ferromagnet (FM), by spin-orbital state analyses, first-principles calculations, and the renormalized spin-wave theory (RSWT). We find that very importantly, the high valent Fe$^{4+}$ ion is in the low-spin state ($t_{2g}^{4}$, $S$=1) with degenerate $t_{2g}$ orbitals rather than the high-spin state ($t_{2g}^{3}e_g^{1}$, $S$=2). It is the low-spin state that allows to carry a large perpendicular orbital moment and then produces a huge single ion anisotropy (SIA) of 25 meV/Fe. Moreover, the negative charge transfer character associated with the unusual high valence, strong Fe $3d$-S $3p$ hybridization, wide bands, and a small band gap all help to establish a strong superexchange. Indeed, our first-principles calculations confirm the strong FM superexchange and the huge perpendicular SIA, both of which are further enhanced by a compressive strain. Then, our RSWT calculations predict that the FM $T_{\rm C}$ is 261 K for the pristine FeS$_2$ monolayer and could be increased to 409 K under the compressive --5\% strain. The high $T_{\rm C}$ is also reproduced by our Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Therefore, it is worth exploring the high-$T_{\rm C}$ Ising FMs in the high valent 2D magnetic materials with degenerate orbitals.

If LLM Is the Wizard, Then Code Is the Wand: A Survey on How Code Empowers Large Language Models to Serve as Intelligent Agents

The prominent large language models (LLMs) of today differ from past language models not only in size, but also in the fact that they are trained on a combination of natural language and formal language (code). As a medium between humans and computers, code translates high-level goals into executable steps, featuring standard syntax, logical consistency, abstraction, and modularity. In this survey, we present an overview of the various benefits of integrating code into LLMs' training data. Specifically, beyond enhancing LLMs in code generation, we observe that these unique properties of code help (i) unlock the reasoning ability of LLMs, enabling their applications to a range of more complex natural language tasks; (ii) steer LLMs to produce structured and precise intermediate steps, which can then be connected to external execution ends through function calls; and (iii) take advantage of code compilation and execution environment, which also provides diverse feedback for model improvement. In addition, we trace how these profound capabilities of LLMs, brought by code, have led to their emergence as intelligent agents (IAs) in situations where the ability to understand instructions, decompose goals, plan and execute actions, and refine from feedback are crucial to their success on downstream tasks. Finally, we present several key challenges and future directions of empowering LLMs with code.

Exploration of the two-dimensional Ising magnetic materials in the triangular prismatic crystal field

Magnetic anisotropy is essential for stabilizing two-dimensional (2D) magnetism, which has significant applications in spintronics and the advancement of fundamental physics. In this work, we examine the electronic structure and magnetic properties of triangular prismatic MSi$_2$N$_4$ (M = V, Cr) monolayers, using crystal field theory, spin-orbital state analyses, and density functional calculations. Our results reveal that the pristine VSi$_2$N$_4$ monolayer exhibits magnetism with a V$^{4+}$ 3$d^1$ $S$ = 1/2 charge-spin state within the triangular prismatic crystal field. However, the strong $d$ orbital hybridization between adjacent V$^{4+}$ ions disrupts the $d$ orbital splitting in this crystal field, resulting in a relatively small in-plane magnetic anisotropy of approximately 2 $μ$eV per V atom.In contrast, the pristine CrSi$_2$N$_4$ monolayer is nonmagnetic, characterized by the Cr$^{4+}$ 3$d^2$ $S$ = 0 state. Upon substituting nonmagnetic Cr$^{4+}$ with Si$^{4+}$, Cr$_\frac{1}{3}$Si$_\frac{8}{3}$N$_4$ transforms into an antiferromagnetic insulator with Cr$^{4+}$ 3$d^2$ $S$ = 1 state, featuring a large orbital moment of -1.06 $μ_{\rm B}$ oriented along the $z$-axis and huge perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of 18.63 meV per Cr atom. These findings highlight the potential for further exploration of 2D Ising magnetic materials within a unique triangular prismatic crystal field.

Static and spherically symmetric black holes in gravity with a background Kalb-Ramond field

The Lorentz symmetry of gravity is spontaneously broken when the nonminimally coupled Kalb-Ramond field acquires a nonzero vacuum expectation value. In this work, we present exact solutions for static and spherically symmetric black holes in the framework of this Lorentz-violating gravity theory. In order to explore the physical implications of Lorentz violation, we analyze the thermodynamic properties of the obtained solutions and evaluate the impact of Lorentz violation on some classical gravitational experiments within the Solar System. Furthermore, the Lorentz-violating parameter is constrained by using the measured results of these experiments.

Varying magnetism in the lattice distorted Y2NiIrO6 and La2NiIrO6

We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of the newly synthesized double perovskites Y$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$ and La$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$, using density functional calculations, crystal field theory, superexchange pictures, and Monte Carlo simulations. We find that both systems are antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulators, with the high-spin Ni$^{2+}$ $t_{2g}$$^{6}e_{g}$$^{2}$ ($S=1$) and the low-spin Ir$^{4+}$ $t_{2g}$$^{5}$ ($S=1/2$) configurations. We address that their lattice distortion induces $t_{2g}$-$e_{g}$ orbital mixing and thus enables the normal Ni$^{+}$-Ir$^{5+}$ charge excitation with the electron hopping from the Ir `$t_{2g}$' to Ni `$e_g$' orbitals, which promotes the AFM Ni$^{2+}$-Ir$^{4+}$ coupling. Therefore, the increasing $t_{2g}$-$e_{g}$ mixing accounts for the enhanced $T_{\rm N}$ from the less distorted La$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$ to the more distorted Y$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$. Moreover, our test calculations find that in the otherwise ideally cubic Y$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$, the Ni$^{+}$-Ir$^{5+}$ charge excitation is forbidden, and only the abnormal Ni$^{3+}$-Ir$^{3+}$ excitation gives a weakly ferromagnetic (FM) behavior. Furthermore, we find that owing to the crystal field splitting, Hund exchange, and broad band formation in the highly coordinated fcc sublattice, Ir$^{4+}$ ions are not in the $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ state but in the $S=1/2$ state carrying a finite orbital moment by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). This work clarifies the varying magnetism in Y$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$ and La$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$ associated with the lattice distortions.

MVP: Meta Visual Prompt Tuning for Few-Shot Remote Sensing Image Scene Classification

Vision Transformer (ViT) models have recently emerged as powerful and versatile models for various visual tasks. Recently, a work called PMF has achieved promising results in few-shot image classification by utilizing pre-trained vision transformer models. However, PMF employs full fine-tuning for learning the downstream tasks, leading to significant overfitting and storage issues, especially in the remote sensing domain. In order to tackle these issues, we turn to the recently proposed parameter-efficient tuning methods, such as VPT, which updates only the newly added prompt parameters while keeping the pre-trained backbone frozen. Inspired by VPT, we propose the Meta Visual Prompt Tuning (MVP) method. Specifically, we integrate the VPT method into the meta-learning framework and tailor it to the remote sensing domain, resulting in an efficient framework for Few-Shot Remote Sensing Scene Classification (FS-RSSC). Furthermore, we introduce a novel data augmentation strategy based on patch embedding recombination to enhance the representation and diversity of scenes for classification purposes. Experiment results on the FS-RSSC benchmark demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed MVP over existing methods in various settings, such as various-way-various-shot, various-way-one-shot, and cross-domain adaptation.

Primordial black holes from an inflationary potential valley

Primordial black holes (PBHs) could be formed if large perturbations are generated on small scales in inflation. We study a toy inflation model with a local minimum. The curvature perturbations are enhanced when the inflaton passes through the local minimum, with more efficient amplification rate than that of quasi-inflection point inflation, leading to the production of PBHs on small scales. The PBHs could comprise the total dark matter in the mass window $10^{16}$--$10^{20}$g.

A braneworld model in a massive gravity

A Randall-Sundrum-like braneworld scenario is constructed in a 5D extension of the Lorentz-violating massive gravity. The gauge hierarchy problem is solved in current model. The linear perturbations are calculated, and it is found that the tensor and vector perturbations are robust and free from the ghost and tachyonic instabilities, however, the scalar perturbation is a ghost filed. After Kaluza-Klein reduction, all the tensor, vector and scalar modes are massive and possess the mass splitting of order of TeV in their respective mass spectra. The massive ground states of tensor and scalar modes propagate only along the brane, however, the vector ground state is absent in the mass spectrum. By introducing the Goldberger-Wise mechanism to stabilize the extra dimension, the 4D effective theory on the brane includes a nearly massless graviton plus three towers of very massive spin-2, spin-1 and ghost spin-0 particles.

Non-Invasive Fairness in Learning through the Lens of Data Drift

Machine Learning (ML) models are widely employed to drive many modern data systems. While they are undeniably powerful tools, ML models often demonstrate imbalanced performance and unfair behaviors. The root of this problem often lies in the fact that different subpopulations commonly display divergent trends: as a learning algorithm tries to identify trends in the data, it naturally favors the trends of the majority groups, leading to a model that performs poorly and unfairly for minority populations. Our goal is to improve the fairness and trustworthiness of ML models by applying only non-invasive interventions, i.e., without altering the data or the learning algorithm. We use a simple but key insight: the divergence of trends between different populations, and, consecutively, between a learned model and minority populations, is analogous to data drift, which indicates the poor conformance between parts of the data and the trained model. We explore two strategies (model-splitting and reweighing) to resolve this drift, aiming to improve the overall conformance of models to the underlying data. Both our methods introduce novel ways to employ the recently-proposed data profiling primitive of Conformance Constraints. Our experimental evaluation over 7 real-world datasets shows that both DifFair and ConFair improve the fairness of ML models. We demonstrate scenarios where DifFair has an edge, though ConFair has the greatest practical impact and outperforms other baselines. Moreover, as a model-agnostic technique, ConFair stays robust when used against different models than the ones on which the weights have been learned, which is not the case for other state of the art.

Reply to: Mobility overestimation in MoS$_2$ transistors due to invasive voltage probes

In this reply, we include new experimental results and verify that the observed non-linearity in rippled-MoS$_2$ (leading to mobility kink) is an intrinsic property of a disordered system, rather than contact effects (invasive probes) or other device issues. Noting that Peng Wu's hypothesis is based on a highly ordered ideal system, transfer curves are expected to be linear, and the carrier density is assumed be constant. Wu's model is therefore oversimplified for disordered systems and neglects carrier-density dependent scattering physics. Thus, it is fundamentally incompatible with our rippled-MoS$_2$, and leads to the wrong conclusion.

Toward Adaptive Semantic Communications: Efficient Data Transmission via Online Learned Nonlinear Transform Source-Channel Coding

The emerging field semantic communication is driving the research of end-to-end data transmission. By utilizing the powerful representation ability of deep learning models, learned data transmission schemes have exhibited superior performance than the established source and channel coding methods. While, so far, research efforts mainly concentrated on architecture and model improvements toward a static target domain. Despite their successes, such learned models are still suboptimal due to the limitations in model capacity and imperfect optimization and generalization, particularly when the testing data distribution or channel response is different from that adopted for model training, as is likely to be the case in real-world. To tackle this, we propose a novel online learned joint source and channel coding approach that leverages the deep learning model's overfitting property. Specifically, we update the off-the-shelf pre-trained models after deployment in a lightweight online fashion to adapt to the distribution shifts in source data and environment domain. We take the overfitting concept to the extreme, proposing a series of implementation-friendly methods to adapt the codec model or representations to an individual data or channel state instance, which can further lead to substantial gains in terms of the bandwidth ratio-distortion performance. The proposed methods enable the communication-efficient adaptation for all parameters in the network without sacrificing decoding speed. Our experiments, including user study, on continually changing target source data and wireless channel environments, demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach, on which we outperform existing state-of-the-art engineered transmission scheme (VVC combined with 5G LDPC coded transmission).
