New results of intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves

We present a series of new results we obtained recently about the intersection numbers of tautological classes on moduli spaces of curves, including a simple formula of the n-point functions for Witten's $τ$ classes, an effective recursion formula to compute higher Weil-Petersson volumes, several new recursion formulae of intersection numbers and our proof of a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber concerning denominators of intersection numbers. We also present Virasoro and KdV properties of generating functions of general mixed $κ$ and $ψ$ intersections.

Hyperbolic geometric flow (I): short-time existence and nonlinear stability

In this paper we establish the short-time existence and uniqueness theorem for hyperbolic geometric flow, and prove the nonlinear stability of hyperbolic geometric flow defined on the Euclidean space with dimension larger than 4. Wave equations satisfied by the curvatures are derived. The relation of hypergeometric flow to the Einstein equation and the Ricci flow is discussed.

Localization and Conjectures from String Duality

We describe the applications of localization methods, in particular the functorial localization formula, in the proofs of several conjectures from string theory. Functorial localization formula pushes the computations on complicated moduli spaces to simple moduli spaces. It is a key technique in the proof of the general mirror formulas, the proof of the Hori-Vafa formulas for explicit expressions of basic hypergeometric series of homogeneous manifolds, the proof of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its generalizations to two partition analogue. We will also discuss our development of the mathematical theory of topological vertex and simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and Witten conjecture. This is my lecture on the 23rd International Conference of Differential Geometric Methods in Theoretical Physics Tianjin, 20 - 26 August, 2005.

Mariño-Vafa Formula and Hodge Integral Identities

In this note we derive some consequences from the Mariño-Vafa formula and the cut-and-join equation, these include unified simple proofs of the $λ_g$ conjecture and some other Hodge integral identities. We also describe a proof of the ELSV formula relating Hurwitz numbers and Hodge integrals by using the cut-and-join equation, following our proof of the Mariño-Vafa formula.

A Formula of Two-Partition Hodge Integrals

We prove a formula conjectured by the third author expressing certain Hodge integrals in terms of certain Chern-Simons link invariants. Such invariants also arise in the representation theory of Kac-Moody algebras.

Geometric Aspects of the Moduli Space of Riemann Surfaces

This is a survey of our recent results on the geometry of moduli spaces and Teichmuller spaces of Riemann surfaces appeared in math.DG/0403068 and math.DG/0409220. We introduce new metrics on the moduli and the Teichmuller spaces of Riemann surfaces with very good properties, study their curvatures and boundary behaviors in great detail. Based on the careful analysis of these new metrics, we have a good understanding of the Kahler-Einstein metric from which we prove that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is stable. Another corolary is a proof of the equivalences of all of the known classical complete metrics to the new metrics, in particular Yau's conjectures in the early 80s on the equivalences of the Kahler-Einstein metric to the Teichmuller and the Bergman metric.

Canonical Metrics on the Moduli Space of Riemann Surfaces II

In this paper we continue our study on the canonical metrics on the Teichmüller and the moduli space of Riemman surfaces. We first prove the equivalence of the Bergman metric and the Carathéodory metric to the Kähler-Einstein metric, solving another old conjecture of Yau. We then prove that the Ricci curvature of the perturbed Ricci metric has negative upper and lower bounds, and it also has bounded geometry. Then we study in detail the boundary behaviors of the Kähler-Einstein metric and prove that it has bounded geometry, and all of the covariant derivatives of its curvature are uniformly bounded on the Teichmüller space. As an application of our detailed understanding of these metrics, we prove that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is stable in the sense of Mumford.

$K$-theory associated to vertex operator algebras

We introduce two $K$-theories, one for vector bundles whose fibers are modules of vertex operator algebras, another for vector bundles whose fibers are modules of associative algebras. We verify the cohomological properties of these $K$-theories, and construct a natural homomorphism from the VOA K-theory to the associative algebra K-theory.

Canonical Metrics on the Moduli Space of Riemann Surfaces I

We prove the equivalences of several classical complete metrics on the Teichmüller and the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces. We use as bridge two new Kähler metrics, the Ricci metric and the perturbed Ricci metric and prove that the perturbed Ricci metric is a complete Kähler metric with bounded negative holomorphic sectional curvature and bounded bisectional and Ricci curvature. As consequences we prove that these two new metrics are equivalent to several famous classical metrics, which inlcude the Teichmüller metric, therefore the Kabayashi metric, the Kähler-Einstein metric and the McMullen metric. This also solves a conjecture of Yau in the early 80s.

$S^1$-fixed-points in hyper-Quot-schemes and an exact mirror formula for flag manifolds from the extended mirror principle diagram

In [L-L-Y1, III: Sec. 5.4] on mirror principle, a method was developed to compute the integral $\int_{X}τ^{\ast}e^{H\cdot t}\cap {\mathbf 1}_d$ for a flag manifold $X=\Fl_{r_1, ..., r_I}({\Bbb C}^n)$ via an extended mirror principle diagram. This method turns the required localization computation on the augmented moduli stack $\bar{\cal M}_{0,0}(\CP^1\times X)$ of stable maps to a localization computation on a hyper-Quot-scheme $\HQuot({\cal E}^n)$. In this article, the detail of this localization computation on $\HQuot({\cal E}^n)$ is carried out. The necessary ingredients in the computation, notably, the $S^1$-fixed-point components and the distinguished ones $E_{(A;0)}$ in $\HQuot({\cal E}^n)$, the $S^1$-equivariant Euler class of $E_{(A;0)}$ in $\HQuot({\cal E}^n)$, and a push-forward formula of cohomology classes involved in the problem from the total space of a restrictive flag manifold bundle to its base manifold are given. With these, an exact expression of $\int_{X}τ^{\ast}e^{H\cdot t}\cap {\mathbf 1}_d$ is obtained. Comments on the Hori-Vafa conjecture are given in the end.

Shafarevich's Conjecture for CY Manifolds I

In this paper we first study the moduli spaces related to Calabi-Yau manifolds. We then apply the results to the following problem. Let $C$ be a fixed Riemann surface with fixed finite number of points on it. Given a CY manifold with fixed topological type, we consider the set of all families of CY manifolds of the fixed topological type over $C$ with degenerate fibres over the fixed points up to isomorphism. This set is called Shafarevich set. The analogue of Shafarevich conjecture for CY manifolds is for which topological types of CY the Shafarevich set is finite. It is well-known that the analogue of Shafarevich conjecture is closely related to the study of the moduli space of polarized CY manifolds and the moduli space of the maps of fixed Riemann surface to the coarse moduli space of the CY manifolds. We prove the existence of the Teichmüller space of CY manifolds together with a universal family of marked CY manifolds. From this result we derive the existence of a finite cover of the coarse moduli space which is a non-singular quasi-projective manifold. Over this cover we construct a family of polarized CY manifolds. We study the moduli space of maps of the fixed Riemann with fixed points on it to the moduli space of CY manifolds constructed in the paper such that the maps map the fixed points on the Riemann surface to the discriminant locus. If this moduli space of maps is finite then Shafarevich conjecture holds. We relate the analogue of Shafarevich problem to the non-vanishing of the Yukawa coupling. We give also a counter example of the Shafarevich problem for a class of CY manifolds.
