Holder's inequality for roots of symmetric operator spaces

We prove a version of Holder's inequality with a constant for p-th roots of symmetric operator spaces of operators affiliated to a semifinite von Neumann algebra factor, and with constant equal to 1 for strongly symmetric operator spaces.

Synchronous correlation matrices and Connes' embedding conjecture

In a recent paper, the concept of synchronous quantum correlation matrices was introduced and these were shown to correspond to traces on certain C*-algebras. In particular, synchronous correlation matrices arose in their study of various versions of quantum chromatic numbers of graphs and other quantum versions of graph theoretic parameters. In this paper we develop these ideas further, focusing on the relations between synchronous correlation matrices and microstates. We prove that Connes' embedding conjecture is equivalent to the equality of two families of synchronous quantum correlation matrices. We prove that if Connes' embedding conjecture has a positive answer, then the tracial rank and projective rank are equal for every graph. We then apply these results to more general non-local games.

Correction of a proof in "Connes' embedding conjecture and sums of hermitian squares"

We show that Connes' embedding conjecture (CEC) is equivalent to a real version of the same (RCEC). Moreover, we show that RCEC is equivalent to a real, purely algebraic statement concerning trace positive polynomials. This purely algebraic reformulation of CEC had previously been given in both a real and a complex version in a paper of the last two authors. The second author discovered a gap in this earlier proof of the equivalence of CEC to the real algebraic reformulation (the proof of the complex algebraic reformulation being correct). In this note, we show that this gap can be filled with help of the theory of real von Neumann algebras.

Perturbation formulas for traces on normed ideals

We prove perturbation results for traces on normed ideals in semifinite von Neumann algebra factors. This includes the case of Dixmier traces. In particular, we establish existence of spectral shift measures with initial operators being dissipative or bounded, and show that these measures can have singular components in the case of Dixmier traces. We also establish a linearization formula for a Dixmier trace applied to perturbed operator functions, a result that does not typically hold for normal traces.

Upper triangular Toeplitz matrices and real parts of quasinilpotent operators

We show that every self--adjoint matrix B of trace 0 can be realized as B=T+T^* for a nilpotent matrix T of norm no greater than K times the norm of B, for a constant K that is independent of matrix size. More particularly, if D is a diagonal, self--adjoint n-by-n matrix of trace 0, then there is a unitary matrix V=XU_n, where X is an n-by-n permutation matrix and U_n is the n-by-n Fourier matrix, such that the upper triangular part, T, of the conjugate V^*DV of D has norm no greater than K times the norm of D. This matrix T is a strictly upper triangular Toeplitz matrix such that T+T^*=V^*DV. We apply this and related results to give partial answers to questions about real parts of quasinilpotent elements in finite von Neumann algebras.

Sofic dimension for discrete measured groupoids

For discrete measured groupoids preserving a probability measure we introduce a notion of sofic dimension that measures the asymptotic growth of the number of sofic approximations on larger and larger finite sets. In the case of groups we give a formula for free products with amalgamation over an amenable subgroup. We also prove a free product formula for measure-preserving actions.

Finitely presented groups related to Kaplansky's Direct Finiteness Conjecture

We consider a family of finitely presented groups, called Universal Left Invertible Element (or ULIE) groups, that are universal for existence of one--sided invertible elements in a group ring K[G], where K is a field or a division ring. We show that for testing Kaplansky's Direct Finiteness Conjecture, it suffices to test it on ULIE groups, and we show that there is an infinite family of non-amenable ULIE groups. We consider the Invertibles Conjecture and we show that it is equivalent to a question about ULIE groups. We also show that for any group G, direct finiteness of K[ G x H ] for all finite groups H implies stable finiteness of K[G]. Thus, truth of the Direct Finiteness Conjecture implies stable finiteness. By calculating all the ULIE groups over the field K=F_2 of two elements, for ranks (3,n), n<=11 and (5,5), we show that the Direct Finiteness Conjecture and the Invertibles Conjecture (which implies the Zero Divisors Conjecture) hold for these ranks over F_2.

Primitivity of unital full free products of residually finite dimensional C*-algebras

A C*-algebra is called primitive if it admits a faithful and irreducible *-representation. We show that if A_1 and A_2 are separable, unital, residually finite dimensional C*-algebras that are not both two dimensional, then their unital C*-algebra full free product, A = A_1*A_2, is primitive. It follows that A is antiliminal and the set of pure states is w*-dense in the state space.

Measure-Multiplicity of the Laplacian masa

It is shown that for the Laplacian masa in the free group factors, the orthocomplement of the associated Jones' projection is an infinite direct sum of coarse bimodules.

Orbit equivalence and sofic approximation

Given an ergodic probability measure preserving dynamical system $\G\acts (X,μ)$, where $\G$ is a finitely generated countable group, we show that the asymptotic growth of the number of finite models for the dynamics, in the sense of sofic approximations, is an invariant of orbit equivalence. We then prove an additivity formula for free products with amenable (possibly trivial) amalgamation. In particular, we obtain purely combinatorial proofs of several results in orbit equivalence theory.

The carpenter and Schur--Horn problems for masas in finite factors

Two classical theorems in matrix theory, due to Schur and Horn, relate the eigenvalues of a self-adjoint matrix to the diagonal entries. These have recently been given a formulation in the setting of operator algebras as the Schur-Horn problem, where matrix algebras and diagonals are replaced respectively by finite factors and maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebras (masas). There is a special case of the problem, called the carpenter problem, which can be stated as follows: for a masa A in a finite factor M with conditional expectation E_A, can each x in A with 0 <= x <= 1 be expressed as E_A(p) for a projection p in M? In this paper, we investigate these problems for various masas. We give positive solutions for the generator and radial masas in free group factors, and we also solve affirmatively a weaker form of the Schur-Horm problem for the Cartan masa in the hyperfinite factor.

The amalgamated free product of hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over finite dimensional subalgebras

In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of two hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over a finite dimensional subalgebra. In general the free product is a finite direct sum of interpolated free group factors and a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra. We then show that the class of von Neumann algebras of this form is closed under taking amalgamated free products over finite dimensional subalgebras.

Free products of sofic groups with amalgamation over monotileably amenable groups

We show that free products of sofic groups with amalgamation over monotileably amenable subgroups are sofic. Consequently, so are HNN extensions of sofic groups relative to homomorphisms of monotileably amenable subgroups. We also show that families of independent uniformly distributed permutation matrices and certain families of non-random permutation matrices (essentially, those coming from quasi--actions of a sofic group) are asymptotically *-free as the matrix size grows without bound.

On single commutators in II_1-factors

We investigate the question of whether all elements of trace zero in a II_1-factor are single commutators. We show that all nilpotent elements are single commutators, as are all normal elements of trace zero whose spectral distributions are discrete measures. Some other classes of examples are considered.

A description of amalgamated free products of finite von Neumann algebras over finite dimensional subalgebras

We show that a free product of a II_1-factor and a finite von Neumann algebra with amalgamation over a finite dimensional subalgebra is always a II_1-factor, and provide an algorithm for describing it in terms of free products (with amalgamation over the scalars) and compression/dilation. As an application, we show that the class of direct sums of finitely many von Neumann algebras that are interpolated free group factors, hyperfinite II_1-factors, type I_n algebras for n finite, and finite dimensional algebras, is closed under taking free products with amalgamation over finite dimensional subalgebras.
