Dispersion of neutrinos in a medium

We analyze the dispersion relations of Weyl or Majorana, and Dirac neutrinos in a complex scalar medium which interacts with the neutrinos through Yukawa couplings. They are solved by perturbative calculation in various limits representing different physical situations, some of which allow the medium-induced neutrino oscillation to occur. Remarkably, peculiar dispersion relations arise differently for Majorana or Dirac neutrinos in the non-relativistic limit. This provides an unpleasant restriction on the cosmological scenario of a scalar dark matter coupling to neutrinos. At present, the model parameter space is constrained by the neutrino scattering with dark matter through astrophysical neutrino observations.

Searching for Boosted Dark Matter mediated by a new Gauge Boson

We study the possibility to directly detect the boosted dark matter generated from the scatterings with high energetic cosmic particles such as protons and electrons. As a concrete example, we consider the sub-GeV dark matter mediated by a $U(1)_D$ gauge boson which has mixing with $U(1)_Y$ gauge boson in the standard model. The enhanced kinetic energy of the light dark matter from the collision with the cosmic rays can recoil the target nucleus and electron in the underground direct detection experiments transferring enough energy to them to be detectable. We show the impact of BDM with existing direct detection experiments as well as collider and beam-dump experiments.

Searching for Axino-Like Particle at Fixed Target Experiments

We investigate the detectability of axino-like particle, which is defined as a supersymmetric partner of axion-like particle and can be a good candidate for dark matter in our Universe. Especially, we consider the fixed target experiments to search for the light axino-like particle with a neutralino as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. We calculate the production and decay rate of neutralinos and the consequent number of events (such as photons and charged leptons) that are produced when the neutralinos decay to the axino-like particles.

Neutrino Oscillations in Dark Matter

We study neutrino oscillations in a medium of dark matter which generalizes the standard matter effect. A general formula is derived to describe the effect of various mediums and their mediators to neutrinos. Neutrinos and anti-neutrinos receive opposite contributions from asymmetric distribution of (dark) matter and anti-matter, and thus it could appear in precision measurement of neutrino or anti-neutrino oscillations. Furthermore, the standard neutrino oscillation can occur from the symmetric dark matter effect even for massless neutrinos.

Constraining dark matter-neutrino interactions with IceCube-170922A

Astrophysical neutrinos travel long distances from their sources to the Earth traversing dark matter halos of clusters of galaxies and that of our own Milky Way. The interaction of neutrinos with dark matter may affect the flux of neutrinos. The recent multi-messenger observation of a high energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A, can give a robust upper bound $σ/M_{dm} \lesssim 5.1\times 10^{-23} {\rm cm}^2 /$GeV on the interaction between neutrino and dark matter at a neutrino energy of 290 TeV allowing 90\% suppression. Combining the constraints from CMB and LSS at different neutrino energies, we can constrain models of dark matter-neutrino interactions.

Thermal production of light Dirac right-handed sneutrino dark matter

We consider the production of right-handed (RH) sneutrino dark matter in a model of Dirac neutrino where neutrino Yukawa coupling constants are very small. Dark matter RH sneutrinos are produced by scatterings and decays of thermal particles in the early Universe without reaching thermal equilibrium due to the small Yukawa couplings. We show that not only decays of thermal particles but also the thermal scatterings can be a dominant source as well as non-thermal production in a scenario with light sneutrinos and charged sleptons while other supersymmetric particles are heavy. We also discuss the cosmological implications of this scenario.

Axino abundances in high-scale supersymmetry

We consider the thermal production of axino dark matter in high-scale supersymmetry where all the superpartners except the axino are heavier than the maximum and reheating temperatures. In this case, the axinos are produced dominantly in pairs from the scattering of SM particles in thermal plasma in the early Universe after inflation. We find that the thermal averaged scattering cross section for the axino pair production is given by $\langleσv\rangle \propto T^4$ in Kim-Shifman-Vainstein-Zakharov (KSVZ) axion model, while it does not depend on the temperature in Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitski (DFSZ) axion model. As a result, the axinos produced during the early matter domination is diluted by the entropy production, so the axino abundance is determined mainly by the reheating temperature, unlike the case with gravitino dark matter. We show that the axino pair production in DFSZ model opens up new parameter space for axino dark matter, due to non-decoupled Higgsino interactions at tree level.

Non-thermal WIMP baryogenesis

We propose a WIMP baryogensis achieved by the annihilation of non-thermally produced WIMPs from decay of heavy particles, which can result in low reheating temerature. Dark matter (DM) can be produced non-thermally during a reheating period created by the decay of long-lived heavy particle, and subsequently re-annihilate to lighter particles even after the thermal freeze-out. The re-annihilation of DM provides the observed baryon asymmetry as well as the correct relic density of DM. We investigate how wahout effects can affect the generation of the baryon asymmetry and study a model suppressing them. In this scenario, we find that DM can be heavy enough and its annihilation cross section can also be larger than that adopted in the usual thermal WIMP baryogenesis.

Charge-spin correlation in van der Waals antiferromagenet NiPS3

Strong charge-spin coupling is found in a layered transition-metal trichalcogenide NiPS3, a van derWaals antiferromagnet, from our study of the electronic structure using several experimental and theoretical tools: spectroscopic ellipsometry, x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy, and density-functional calculations. NiPS3 displays an anomalous shift in the optical spectral weight at the magnetic ordering temperature, reflecting a strong coupling between the electronic and magnetic structures. X-ray absorption, photoemission and optical spectra support a self-doped ground state in NiPS3. Our work demonstrates that layered transition-metal trichalcogenide magnets are a useful candidate for the study of correlated-electron physics in two-dimensional magnetic material.

Properties of spin 1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnets: CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Y, La)

We found new two-dimensional (2D) quantum (S=1/2) antiferromagnetic systems: CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Y and La). According to our analysis of high-resolution X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments, the Cu-network of CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Y and La) exhibits a 2D triangular lattice linked via weak bonds along the perpendicular b-axis. Our bulk characterizations from 0.08 to 400 K show that they undergo a long-range order at 0.51(1) and 1.09(4) K for the Y and La systems, respectively. Interestingly, they also exhibit field induced phase transitions. For theoretical understanding, we carried out the density functional theory (DFT) band calculations to find that they are typical charge-transfer-type insulators with a gap of Eg = 2 eV. Taken together, our observations make CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Y and La) additional examples of low-dimensional quantum spin triangular antiferromagnets with the low-temperature magnetic ordering.

A new bound on the low reheating temperature with dark matter

We investigate a new bound on the low reheating temperature in a scenario where the Universe experiences early matter-domination before reheating after which the standard big bang cosmology begins. In many models of dark matter (DM), the small scale fluctuations of DM grow during the early matter-domination era and seed the formation of the ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs). Using the constraints on the number of UCMHs from gamma-ray observations, we find a lower bound on the reheating temperature between ${\cal O}(10)~{\rm MeV} - {\cal O}(100)~{\rm MeV}$ for WIMP dark matter depending on the nature of DM. A similar bound could be obtained for non-WIMP dark matter by observing UCMHs gravitationally such as pulsar timing, microlensing and so on in some future observations.

Constraining dark photon model with dark matter from CMB spectral distortions

Many extensions of Standard Model (SM) include a dark sector which can interact with the SM sector via a light mediator. We explore the possibilities to probe such a dark sector by studying the distortion of the CMB spectrum from the blackbody shape due to the elastic scatterings between the dark matter and baryons through a hidden light mediator. We in particular focus on the model where the dark sector gauge boson kinetically mixes with the SM and present the future experimental prospect for a PIXIE-like experiment along with its comparison to the existing bounds from complementary terrestrial experiments.

Doping effects on trimerization and magnetoelectric coupling of single crystal multiferroic (Y,Lu)MnO3

Hexagonal RMnO3 is a multiferroic compound with a giant spin-lattice coupling at an antiferromagnetic transition temperature [1]. Despite extensive studies over the past two decades, however, the origin and underlying microscopic mechanism of the strong spin-lattice coupling remain still very much elusive. In this study, we have tried to address this problem by measuring the thermal expansion and dielectric constant of doped single crystals Y1-xLuxMnO3 with x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0. From these measurements, we confirm that there is a progressive change in the physical properties with doping. At the same time, all our samples exhibit clear anomalies at TN, even in the samples with x = 0.5 and 0.75 as opposed to some earlier ideas, which suggests an unusual doping dependence of the anomaly. Our work reveals yet another interesting facet of the spin lattice coupling issue in hexagonal RMnO3.

Tunneling transport of mono- and few-layers magnetic van der Waals MnPS$_3$

We have investigated the tunneling transport of mono- and few-layers of MnPS3 by using conductive atomic force microscopy. Due to the band alignment of indium tin oxide/MnPS3/Pt-Ir tip junction, the key features of both Schottky junction and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling (FNT) were observed for all the samples with varying thickness. Using the FNT model and assuming the effective electron mass (0.5 me) of MnPS3, we estimate the tunneling barrier height to be 1.31 eV and the dielectric breakdown strength as 5.41 MV/cm.

Primordial perturbations from dilaton-induced gauge fields

We study the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations in inflation scenario involving a spectator dilaton field. In our setup, the rolling spectator dilaton causes a tachyonic instability of gauge fields, leading to a copious production of gauge fields in the superhorizon regime, which generates additional scalar and tensor perturbations through gravitational interactions. Our prime concern is the possibility to enhance the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ relative to the standard result, while satisfying the observational constraints. To this end, we allow the dilaton field to be stabilized before the end of inflation, but after the CMB scales exit the horizon. We show that for the inflaton slow roll parameter $ε\gtrsim 10^{-3}$, the tensor-to-scalar ratio in our setup can be enhanced only by a factor of ${\cal O}(1)$ compared to the standard result. On the other hand, for smaller $ε$ corresponding to a lower inflation energy scale, a much bigger enhancement can be achieved, so that our setup can give rise to an observably large $r\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ even when $ε\ll 10^{-3}$. The tensor perturbation sourced by the spectator dilaton can have a strong scale dependence, and is generically red-tilted. We also discuss a specific model to realize our scenario, and identify the parameter region giving an observably large $r$ for relatively low inflation energy scales.

WIMP isocurvature perturbation and small scale structure

The adiabatic perturbation of dark matter is damped during the kinetic decoupling due to the collision with relativistic component on sub-horizon scales. However the isocurvature part is free from damping and could be large enough to make a substantial contribution to the formation of small scale structure. We explicitly study the weakly interacting massive particles as dark matter with an early mater dominated period before radiation domination and show that the isocurvature perturbation is generated during the phase transition and leaves imprint in the observable signatures for small scale structure.

A facility to Search for Hidden Particles at the CERN SPS: the SHiP physics case

This paper describes the physics case for a new fixed target facility at CERN SPS. The SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) experiment is intended to hunt for new physics in the largely unexplored domain of very weakly interacting particles with masses below the Fermi scale, inaccessible to the LHC experiments, and to study tau neutrino physics. The same proton beam setup can be used later to look for decays of tau-leptons with lepton flavour number non-conservation, $τ\to 3μ$ and to search for weakly-interacting sub-GeV dark matter candidates. We discuss the evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and describe interactions between new particles and four different portals - scalars, vectors, fermions or axion-like particles. We discuss motivations for different models, manifesting themselves via these interactions, and how they can be probed with the SHiP experiment and present several case studies. The prospects to search for relatively light SUSY and composite particles at SHiP are also discussed. We demonstrate that the SHiP experiment has a unique potential to discover new physics and can directly probe a number of solutions of beyond the Standard Model puzzles, such as neutrino masses, baryon asymmetry of the Universe, dark matter, and inflation

Perspective on completing natural inflation

We present a perspective on the inflation paths in 2-, 3-,,, N-flation models based on the ultraviolet completion in heterotic string theory, where a number of grand unification scale axions are used. The number of non-Abelian gauge groups for a natural inflation is restricted in string compactification, and we argue that the most plausible completion of natural inflation from a theory perspective is the 2-flation.
