Spin dependent transport of ``nonmagnetic metal/zigzag nanotube encapsulating magnetic atoms/nonmagnetic metal'' junctions

Towards a novel magnetoresistance (MR) device with a carbon nanotube, we propose ``nonmagnetic metal/zigzag nanotube encapsulating magnetic atoms/nonmagnetic metal'' junctions. We theoretically investigate how spin-polarized edges of the nanotube and the encapsulated magnetic atoms influence on transport. When the on-site Coulomb energy divided by the magnitude of transfer integral, $U/|t|$, is larger than 0.8, large MR effect due to the direction of spins of magnetic atoms, which has the magnitude of the MR ratio of about 100%, appears reflecting such spin-polarized edges.

Electronic Properties of Topological Materials: Optical Excitations in Moebius Conjugated Polymers

Electronic structures and optical excitations in Moebius conjugated polymers are studied theoretically. Periodic and Moebius boundary conditions are applied to the tight binding model of poly(para-phenylene), taking exciton effects into account. We discuss that oligomers with a few structural units are more effective than polymers for observations of effects of discrete wave numbers that are shifted by the change in boundary condition. Next, calculations of optical absorption spectra are reported. Certain components of optical absorption for an electric field perpendicular to the polymer axis mix with absorption spectra for an electric field parallel to the polymer axis. Therefore, the polarization dependences of an electric field of light enable us to detect whether conjugated polymers have the Moebius boundary.

A Theoretical Study on Spin-Dependent Transport of "Ferromagnet/Carbon Nanotube Encapsulating Magnetic Atoms/Ferromagnet" Junctions with 4-Valued Conductances

As a novel function of ferromagnet (FM)/spacer/FM junctions, we theoretically investigate multiple-valued (or multi-level) cell property, which is in principle realized by sensing conductances of four states recorded with magnetization configurations of two FMs; (up,up), (up,down), (down,up), (down, down). In order to sense all the states, 4-valued conductances corresponding to the respective states are necessary. We previously proposed that 4-valued conductances are obtained in FM1/spin-polarized spacer (SPS)/FM2 junctions, where FM1 and FM2 have different spin polarizations, and the spacer depends on spin [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 15, 8797 (2003)]. In this paper, an ideal SPS is considered as a single-wall armchair carbon nanotube encapsulating magnetic atoms, where the nanotube shows on-resonance or off-resonance at the Fermi level according to its length. The magnitude of the obtained 4-valued conductances has an opposite order between the on-resonant nanotube and the off-resonant one, and this property can be understood by considering electronic states of the nanotube. Also, the magnetoresistance ratio between (up,up) and (down, down) can be larger than the conventional one between parallel and anti-parallel configurations.

Excitons in hexagonal nanonetwork materials

Optical excitations in hexagonal nanonetwork materials, for example, Boron-Nitride (BN) sheets and nanotubes, are investigated theoretically. A permanent electric dipole moment, whose direction is from the B site to the N site, is considered along the BN bond. When the exciton hopping integral is restricted to the nearest neighbors, the flat band of the exciton appears at the lowest energy. The symmetry of this exciton band is optically forbidden, indicating that the excitons relaxed to this band will show quite long lifetime which will cause luminescence properties.

Theoretical investigation on electronic properties of topological materials: Optical excitations in Moebius conjugated polymers

Electronic structures and optical excitations in Moebius conjugated polymers are studied theoretically. Periodic and Moebius boundary conditions are applied to the tight binding model of poly(para-phenylene), taking into account of the exciton effects by long-range Coulomb interactions. We first discuss that oligomers with a few structural units are more effective than polymers, in order to measure effects of discrete wave numbers which are shift by the Moebius boundary from those of the periodic boundary. Next, calculations of the optical absorption spectra are reported. Certain components of the optical absorption for the electric field perpendicular to the polymer axis mix with the absorption spectra for the electric filed parallel with the polymer axis. Therefore, the polarization dependences of electric field of light can detect whether conjugated polymers have the Moebius boundary or not.

STM observation of electronic wave interference effect in finite-sized graphite with dislocation-network structures

Superperiodic patterns near a step edge were observed by STM on several-layer-thick graphite sheets on a highly oriented pyrolitic graphite substrate, where a dislocation network is generated at the interface between the graphite overlayer and the substrate. Triangular- and rhombic-shaped periodic patterns whose periodicities are around 100 nm were observed on the upper terrace near the step edge. In contrast, only outlines of the patterns similar to those on the upper terrace were observed on the lower terrace. On the upper terrace, their geometrical patterns gradually disappeared and became similar to those on the lower terrace without any changes of their periodicity in increasing a bias voltage. By assuming a periodic scattering potential at the interface due to dislocations, the varying corrugation amplitudes of the patterns can be understood as changes in LDOS as a result of the beat of perturbed and unperturbed waves, i.e. the interference in an overlayer. The observed changes in the image depending on an overlayer height and a bias voltage can be explained by the electronic wave interference in the ultra-thin overlayer distorted under the influence of dislocation-network structures.

Magnetoresistance Effect in Spin-Polarized Junctions of Ferromagnetically Contacting Multiple Conductive Paths: Applications to Atomic Wires and Carbon Nanotubes

For spin-polarized junctions of ferromagnetically contacting multiple conductive paths, such as ferromagnet (FM)/atomic wires/FM and FM/carbon nanotubes/FM junctions, we theoretically investigate spin-dependent transport to elucidate the intrinsic relation between the number of paths and conduction, and to enhance the magnetoresistance (MR) ratio. When many paths are randomly located between the two FMs, electronic wave interference between the FMs appears, and then the MR ratio increases with increasing number of paths. Furthermore, at each number of paths, the MR ratio for carbon nanotubes becomes larger than that for atomic wires, reflecting the characteristic shape of points in contact with the FM.

STM observation of the quantum interference effect in finite-sized graphite

Superperiodic patterns were observed by STM on two kinds of finite-sized graphene sheets. One is nanographene sheets inclined from a highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) substrate and the other is several-layer-thick graphene sheets with dislocation-network structures against a HOPG substrate. As for the former, the in-plane periodicity increased gradually in the direction of inclination, and it is easily changed by attachment of a nanographite flake on the nanographene sheets. The oscillation pattern can be explained by the interference of electron waves confined in the inclined nanographene sheets. As for the latter, patterns and their corrugation amplitudes depended on the bias voltage and on the terrace height from the HOPG substrate. The interference effect by the perturbed and unperturbed waves in the overlayer is responsible for the patterns whose local density of states varies in space.

A theoretical investigation of ferromagnetic tunnel junctions with 4-valued conductances

In considering a novel function in ferromagnetic tunnel junctions consisting of ferromagnet(FM)/barrier/FM junctions, we theoretically investigate multiple valued (or multi-level) cell property, which is in principle realized by sensing conductances of four states recorded with magnetization configurations of two FMs; that is, (up,up), (up,down), (down,up), (down, down). To obtain such 4-valued conductances, we propose FM1/spin-polarized barrier/FM2 junctions, where the FM1 and FM2 are different ferromagnets, and the barrier has spin dependence. The proposed idea is applied to the case of the barrier having localized spins. Assuming that all the localized spins are pinned parallel to magnetization axes of the FM1 and FM2, 4-valued conductances are explicitly obtained for the case of many localized spins. Furthermore, objectives for an ideal spin-polarized barrier are discussed.

Novel Electronic States in Graphene Ribbons -Competing Spin and Charge Orders-

In a nanographene ring with zigzag edges, the spin-polarized state and the charge-polarized state are stabilized by the on-site and the nearest neighbor Coulomb repulsions, U and V, respectively, within the extended Hubbard model under the mean field approximation. In a Moebius strip of the nanographene with a zigzag edge, U stabilizes two magnetic states, the domain wall state and the helical state. Both states have ferrimagnetic spins localized along the zigzag edge while the former connects the opposite ferrimagnetic orders resulting in a magnetic frustration forced by the topology and the latter rotates the ferrimagnetic spins uniformly to circumvent the frustration. The helical state is lower in energy than the domain wall state. On the other hand, V stabilizes another domain wall state connecting the opposite charge orders.

Magnetic Structure of Nano-Graphite Moebius Ribbon

We consider the electronic and magnetic properties of nanographite ribbon with zigzag edges under the periodic or Moebius boundary conditions. The zigzag nano-graphite ribbons possess edge localized states at the Fermi level which cause a ferrimagnetic spin polarization localized at the edge sites even in the very weak Coulomb interaction. The imposition of the Moebius boundary condition makes the system non-AB-bipartite lattice, and depress the spin polarization, resulting in the formation of a magnetic domain wall. The width of the magnetic domain depends on the Coulomb interaction and narrows with increasing U/t.

Theoretical study on novel electronic properties in nanographite materials

Antiferromagnetism in stacked nanographite is investigated with using the Hubbard-type model. We find that the open shell electronic structure can be an origin of the decreasing magnetic moment with the decrease of the inter-graphene distance, as experiments on adsorption of molecules suggest. Next, possible charge-separated states are considered using the extended Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interactions. The charge-polarized state could appear, when a static electric field is present in the graphene plane for example. Finally, superperiodic patterns with a long distance in a nanographene sheet observed by STM are discussed in terms of the interference of electronic wave functions with a static linear potential theoretically. In the analysis by the k-p model, the oscillation period decreases spatially in agreement with experiments.

Competition between spin and charge polarized states in nanographene ribbons with zigzag edges

Effects of the nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction on nanographene ribbons with zigzag edges are investigated using the extended Hubbard model within the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. The nearest Coulomb interaction stabilizes a novel electronic state with the opposite electric charges separated and localized along both edges, resulting in a finite electric dipole moment pointing from one edge to the other. This charge-polarized state competes with the peculiar spin-polarized state caused by the on-site Coulomb interaction and is stabilized by an external electric field.

Novel electronic wave interference patterns in nanographene sheets

Superperiodic patterns with a long distance in a nanographene sheet observed by STM are discussed in terms of the interference of electronic wave functions. The period and the amplitude of the oscillations decrease spatially in one direction. We explain the superperiodic patterns with a static linear potential theoretically. In the k-p model, the oscillation period decreases, and agrees with experiments. The spatial difference of the static potential is estimated as 1.3 eV for 200 nm in distance, and this value seems to be reasonable in order that the potential difference remains against perturbations, for example, by phonon fluctuations and impurity scatterings. It turns out that the long-distance oscillations come from the band structure of the two-dimensional graphene sheet.

Optical excitations in hexagonal nanonetwork materials

Optical excitations in hexagonal nanonetwork materials, for example, Boron-Nitride (BN) sheets and nanotubes, are investigated theoretically. The bonding of BN systems is positively polarized at the B site, and is negatively polarized at the N site. There is a permanent electric dipole moment along the BN bond, whose direction is from the B site to the N site. When the exciton hopping integral is restricted to the nearest neighbors, the flat band of the exciton appears at the lowest energy. The higher optical excitations have excitation bands similar to the electronic bands of graphene planes and carbon nanotubes. The symmetry of the flat exciton band is optically forbidden, indicating that the excitons related to this band will show quite long lifetime which will cause strong luminescence properties.

Mechanism of Magnetism in Stacked Nanographite

Nanographite systems, where graphene sheets of the orders of the nanometer size are stacked, show novel magnetic properties, such as, spin-glass like behaviors, and the change of ESR line widths while gas adsorptions. Recently, it has been found that magnetic moments decrease with the decrease of the interlayer distance while water molecules are attached physically. In this paper, we consider the mechanisms of antiferromagnetism using the Hubbard-type model...

Mechanism of magnetism in stacked nanographite with open shell electrons

Antiferromagnetism in stacked nanographite is investigated with using the Hubbard-type models. The A-B stacking or the stacking near to that of A-B type is favorable for the hexagonal nanographite with zigzag edges, in order that magnetism appears. Next, we find that the open shell electronic structure can be an origin of the decreasing magnetic moment with the decrease of the inter-graphene distance, as experiments on adsorption of molecules suggest.

Propagation of Cooper pairs in carbon nanotubes with superconducting correlations

Propagation of Cooper pairs in carbon nanotubes in the presence of superconducting correlations is studied theoretically. We find that negative and positive currents induced by impurity scatterings between electrons and holes cancel each other, and the nonmagnetic impurity does not hinder the supercurrent in the regions where the superconducting proximity effects occur. The carbon nanotube is a good conductor for Cooper pairs.
