Mechanism of Magnetism in Stacked Nanographite: Theoretical Study

Antiferromagnetism in stacked nanographite is investigated with using the Hubbard-type model. The A-B stacking is favorable for the hexagonal nanographite with zigzag edges, in order that magnetism appears. Next, we find that the open shell electronic structures can be origins of the decreasing magnetic moment with the decrease of the inter-graphene distance, as experiments on adsorption of molecules suggest.

Optical excitations in diphenylacetylene based dendrimers studied by a coupled exciton model with off-diagonal disorder

A phenomenological coupled exciton model is proposed in order to characterize optical excitations in extended dendrimers. An onsite exciton state is assigned at each phenyl rings and a nearest neighbor hopping integral which obeys the Gaussian distribution is considered between the exciton states. The decreasing optical excitation energy with respect to the dendrimer size indicates the presence of exciton funnels along the backbone of the dendrimers. Therefore, the extended dendrimers can work as artificial fractal antenna systems which capture energy of light. Dynamics of an exciton is also investigated by solving time development of a wavefunction of optical excitations. It is shown that a damping term with a certain magnitude is necessary in order that optical excitations captured at the outer edge of the supermolecule move to the central areas of the molecule.

New type of antiferromagnetic state in stacked nanographite

Nanographite systems, where graphene sheets of the orders of the nanometer size are stacked, show novel magnetic properties, such as, spin-glass like behaviors and the change of ESR line widths in the course of gas adsorptions. We theoretically investigate stacking effects in the zigzag nanographite sheets by using a tight binding model with the Hubbard-like onsite interactions. We find a remarkable difference in the magnetic properties between the simple A-A and A-B type stackings. For the simple stacking, there are not magnetic solutions. For the A-B stacking, we find antiferromagnetic solutions for strong onsite repulsions. The local magnetic moments tend to exist at the edge sites in each layer due to the large amplitude of wavefunctions at these sites. We study variations between the A-A and A-B stackings to find that the magnetism between the two stackings experiences the first order phase transition. The effect of the interlayer distance is also discussed.

Impurity Scattering in Carbon Nanotubes with Superconducting Pair Correlations

Effects of the superconducting pair potential on the impurity scattering processes in metallic carbon nanotubes are studied theoretically. The backward scattering of electrons vanishes in the normal state. In the presence of the superconducting pair correlations, the backward scatterings of electron- and hole-like quasiparticles vanish, too. The impurity gives rise to backward scatterings of holes for incident electrons, and it also induces backward scatterings of electrons for incident holes. Negative and positive currents induced by such the scatterings between electrons and holes cancel each other. Therefore, the nonmagnetic impurity does not hinder the supercurrent in the regions where the superconducting proximity effects occur, and the carbon nanotube is a good conductor for Cooper pairs. Relations with experiments are discussed.

Magnetic impurity effects in metallic carbon nanotubes: local non-Fermi liquid theory

Magnetic impurity effects on metallic carbon nanotubes are studied theoretically. The resolvent method for the multi channel Kondo effect is applied to the band structure of the kp perturbation hamiltonian in the limit of the infinite onsite repulsion at the impurity site. We discuss the local non-Fermi liquid behavior at temperatures lower than the Kondo temperature T_K. The density of states of localized electron has a singularity |omega|^1/2 which gives rise to a pseudo gap at the Kondo resonance in low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the electronic resistivity is predicted as T^1/2, and the imaginary part of dynamical susceptibilities has the |omega|^1/2 dependence. Possible experimental observations are discussed.

Electronic states of metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes with bond and site disorder

Disorder effects on the density of states in carbon nanotubes are analyzed by a tight binding model with Gaussian bond or site disorder. Metallic armchair and semiconducting zigzag nanotubes are investigated. In the strong disorder limit, the conduction and valence band states merge, and a finite density of states appears at the Fermi energy in both of metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes. The bond disorder gives rise to a huge density of states at the Fermi energy differently from that of the site disorder case. Consequences for experiments are discussed.

Photophysical Properties in C60 and Higher Fullerenes

The optical excitations in C$_{60}$ and higher fullerenes, including isomers of C$_{76}$, C$_{78}$, and C$_{84}$, are theoretically investigated. We use a tight binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions, treated by the Hartree-Fock and configuration-interaction methods. We find that the optical excitations in the energy region smaller than about 4 eV have most of their amplitudes at the pentagons. The oscillator strengths of projected absorption almost accord with those of the total absorption. Next, off-resonant third order susceptibilities are investigated. We find that third order susceptibilities of higher fullerenes are a few times larger than those of C$_{60}$. The magnitude of nonlinearity increases as the optical gap decreases in higher fullerenes. The nonlinearity is nearly proportional to the fourth power of the carbon number when the onsite Coulomb repulsion is $2t$ or $4t$, $t$ being the nearest neighbor hopping integral. This result, indicating important roles of Coulomb interactions, agrees with quantum chemical calculations of higher fullerenes.

Long-range excitons in conjugated polymers with ring torsions: poly(para-phenylene) and polyaniline

Ring torsion effects on optical excitation properties in poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) and polyaniline (PAN) are investigated by extending the Shimoi-Abe model [Synth. Met. 78, 219 (1996)]. The model is solved by the intermediate exciton formalism. Long-range excitons are characterized, and the long-range component of the oscillator strengths is calculated. We find that ring torsions affect the long-range excitons in PAN more easily than in PPP, due to the larger torsion angle of PAN and the large number of bonds whose hopping integrals are modulated by torsions. Next, ring torsional disorder effects simulated by the Gaussian distribution function are analyzed. The long-range component of the total oscillator strengths after sample average is nearly independent of the disorder strength in the PPP case, while that of the PAN decreases easily as the disorder becomes stronger.

Exciton and lattice-fluctuation effects in optical spectra of C60

A theory of optical excitations by using a tight binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions is developed. The model is applied to a C60 molecule and a cluster, and is treated by the Hartree-Fock approximation followed by a configuration interaction method. Lattice fluctuations are taken into account by a bond disorder model. We first examine what strength of Coulomb interaction is appropriate to describe the electronic structures observed by photo-electron and optical absorption spectroscopy. Then, we demonstrate that the photo-excited states are mainly intramolecular (i.e. Frenkel) excitons with small charge-transfer components. We examine to what extent the dipole forbidden transitions of a single C60 molecule become dipole-allowed by lattice fluctuations or intermolecular interactions.

Coulomb interaction effects on nonlinear optical response in C60, C70, and higher fullerenes

Nonlinear optical properties in the fullerene C$_{60}$ and the extracted higher fullerenes -- C$_{70}$, C$_{76}$, C$_{78}$, and C$_{84}$ -- are theoretically investigated by using the exciton formalism and the sum-over-states method. We find that off-resonant third order susceptibilities of higher fullerenes are a few times larger than those of C$_{60}$. The magnitude of nonlinearity increases as the optical gap decreases in higher fullerenes. Optical excitations in electroluminescent polymers: poly(para-phenylenevinylene) family

Component of photoexcited states with large spatial extent is investigated for optical absorption spectra of the electroluminescent conjugated polymers by using the intermediate exciton theory. We calculate the ratio of oscillator strengths due to long-range excitons with respect to sum of all the oscillator strengths of the absorption as a function of the monomer number. The oscillator strengths of the long-range excitons in poly(para-phenylene) are smaller than those in poly(para-phenylenevinylene), and those of poly(para-phenylenedivinylene) are larger than those in poly(para-phenylenevinylene) Such relative variations are explained by the differences of the number of vinylene units. The oscillator strengths of long-range excitons in poly(di-para-phenylenevinylene) are much larger than those of the above three polymers, due to the increase of number of phenyl rings. We also find that the energy position of the almost localized exciton is neary the same in the four polymers.

Optical absorption spectra of A6C60: Reduction of effective Coulombinteractions

Optical absorption spectra of C60^6- are theoretically investigated in order to analyze the optical properties of alkali metal doped fullerites A6C60. We use a tight binding model with long ranged Coulomb interactions and bond disorder. Optical spectra are obtained by the Hartree-Fock approximation and the CI method. The Coulomb interaction parameters which are relevant to the optical spectra of A6C60 are almost the half of those of the neutral C60. The reduction of the effective Coulomb interactions is concluded for the heavily doped case of C60.

Long-Range Excitons in Optical Absorption Spectra of Electroluminescent Polymer Poly(para-phenylenevinylene)

The component of photoexcited states with large spatial extent is investigated for poly(para-phenylenevinylene) using the intermediate exciton theory. We find a peak due to long-range excitons at the higher-energy side of the lowest main feature of optical spectra. The fact that the onset of long-range excitons is located near the energy gap is related to the mechanisms of large photocurrents measured in such energy regions. We show that a large value of the hopping integral is realistic for characterizing optical excitations.

Nonlinear optical response from excitons in soliton lattice systems

Exciton effects on conjugated polymers and the resulting optical nonlinearities are investigated in soliton lattice systems. The magnitude of the THG at the 10 percent doping increases by the factor about 10^2 from that of the neutral system. The huge increase by the order two is common for several choices of Coulomb interaction strengths, and is seen in open systems as well as in periodic systems. We also find that the THG enhances much larger when the number of solitons is two in the open boundaries. This new fact should be attractive to the experimentalists. Optical absorption spectra and geometric effects in higher fullerenes

The optical excitations in $\rug$ and higher fullerenes, including isomers of C$_{76}$, C$_{78}$, and C$_{84}$, are theoretically investigated. When the projection is performed on each pentagon and pentagon dimers, the resultant spectrum in the low energy region is quite different from that of the total absorption. The spectral shapes of the total absorption are turned out to be determined mainly by the geometrical distributions of the pentagons in the fullerene structures.
