Electroproduction of heavy vector mesons using holographic QCD: from near threshold to high energy regimes

We develop a non-perturbative analysis of the electro-production of heavy vector mesons ($ϕ$, $J/Ψ$) from threshold to high energy. We use the holographic construction with bulk confinement enforced through a soft wall. Using Witten diagrams, we evaluate the pertinent cross sections for heavy vector mesons ($ϕ$, $J/Ψ$) production and study their dependence on both the incoming virtual photon polarization as well as the outgoing polarization of the heavy meson. Our results for $J/Ψ$ electro-production compares well with the available HERA data at low and intermediate $Q^2$, and for a wide range of momentum transfer. We also predict the quasi-real electro-production of $J/Ψ$ near threshold.

Nucleon mass radii and distribution: Holographic QCD, Lattice QCD and GlueX data

We briefly review and expand our recent analysis for all three invariant A,B,D gravitational form factors of the nucleon in holographic QCD. They compare well to the gluonic gravitational form factors recently measured using lattice QCD simulations. The holographic A-term is fixed by the tensor $T=2^{++}$ (graviton) Regge trajectory, and the D-term by the difference between the tensor $T=2^{++}$ (graviton) and scalar $S=0^{++}$ (dilaton) Regge trajectories. The B-term is null in the absence of a tensor coupling to a Dirac fermion in bulk. A first measurement of the tensor form factor A-term is already accessible using the current GlueX data, and therefore the tensor gluonic mass radius, pressure and shear inside the proton, thanks to holography. The holographic A-term and D-term can be expressed exactly in terms of harmonic numbers. The tensor mass radius from the holographic threshold is found to be $\langle r^2_{GT}\rangle \approx (0.57-0.60\,{\rm fm})^2$, in agreement with $\langle r^2_{GT}\rangle \approx (0.62\,{\rm fm})^2$ as extracted from the overall numerical lattice data, and empirical GlueX data. The scalar mass radius is found to be slightly larger $\langle r^2_{GS}\rangle \approx (0.7\,{\rm fm})^2$.

Neutrino-nucleon DIS from Holographic QCD: PDFs of sea and valence quarks, form factors, and structure functions of the proton

We discuss unpolarized neutrino- and anti-neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering (DIS) using a chiral doublet of baryonic sources with explicit symmetry breaking, in a slice of AdS$_5$ with both a hard and soft wall. We explicitly derive the direct and transition form factors for the vector and axial-vector currents for the holographic dual of a proton and neutron. We use them to derive the s-channel structure functions for neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering on a proton and neutron in bulk. The t-channel contributions stemming from the Pomeron and Reggeon exchanges are also evaluated explicitly. The pertinent even and odd structure functions in the limit of large and small parton momentum fraction $x$ are given. The results allow for the extraction of the nonperterbative parton distribution functions carried by the sea and valence quarks both at large-x and small-x regimes. Our holographic PDF sets compare well with LHAPDF and CTEQ PDF sets in the large-x and small-x regimes in the intermediate range of $Q^2<10~\rm{GeV^2}$.

Deep Inelastic Scattering on an Extremal RN-AdS Black Hole II: Holographic Fermi Surface

We consider deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a dense nucleus described as an extremal RN-AdS black hole with holographic quantum fermions in the bulk. We evaluate the 1-loop fermion contribution to the R-current on the charged black hole, and map it on scattering off a Fermi surface of a dense and large nucleus with fixed atomic number. Near the black hole horizon, the geometry is that of AdS$_2\times $R$^3$ where the fermions develop an emergent Fermi surface with anomalous dimensions. DIS scattering off these fermions yields to anomalous partonic distributions mostly at large-x, as well as modified hard scattering rules. The pertinent R-ratio for the black hole is discussed. For comparison, the structure functions and the R-ratio in the probe or dilute limit with no back-reaction on the geometry, are also derived. We formulate a hybrid holographic model for DIS scattering on heavy and light nuclei, which compares favorably to the existing data for Pb, Au, Fe, C and He over a wide range of parton-x.

Diffractive photoproduction of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ using holographic QCD: gravitational form factors and GPD of gluons in the proton

We present a holographic analysis of diffractive photoproducton of charmonium $J/ψ$ and upsilonium $Υ$ on a proton, considered as a bulk Dirac fermion, for all ranges of $\sqrt{s}$, i.e., from near threshold to very high energy. Using the bulk wave functions of the proton and vector mesons, within holographic QCD, and employing Witten diagrams in the bulk, we compute the diffractive photoproduction amplitude of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$. The holographic amplitude shows elements of the strictures of vector meson dominance (VMD). It is dominated by the exchange of a massive graviton or $2^{++}$ glueball resonances near threshold, and its higher spin-j counterparts that reggeize at higher energies. Both the differential and total cross sections are controlled by the gravitational form factor $A(t)$, and compare well to the recent results reported by the GlueX collaboration near threshold and the world data at large $\sqrt{s}$. The holographic gravitational form factors, including the D-term, which is due to the exchange of massive spin-0 glueballs, are in good agreement with lattice simulations. We use it to extract the holographic pressure and shear forces inside the proton. Finally, using a pertinent integral representation of the holographic gravitational form factor $A(t)$ near threshold, and its Pomeron counterpart way above threshold, we extract the generalized parton distribution (GPD) of gluons inside the proton at different resolutions.

Holographic Approaches to DIS on a Nucleus

We consider deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a dense nucleus described as an extremal RN-AdS black hole with holographic quantum fermions in the bulk. We find that the R-ratio (the ratio of the structure function of the black hole to proton) exhibit shadowing for $x < 0.1$, anti-shadowing for $0.1 < x < 0.3$, EMC-like effect for $0.3 < x < 0.8$ and Fermi motion for $x > 0.8$ in a qualitative agreement with the experimental observation of the ratio for DIS on nucleus for all range of $x$. We also take the dilute limit of the black hole and show that its R-ratio exhibits EMC-like effect for $0.2 < x < 0.8$ and the Fermi motion for $x > 0.8$, and no shadowing is observed in the dilute limit for both bottom-up (using Thomas-Fermi approximation for the nucleon distribution inside the dilute nucleus), and top-down (considering the dilute nucleus to be a Fermi gas in AdS) approaches.

Strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma on the Coulomb branch I: Thermodynamics

We study $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory on the Coulomb branch (cSYM) in the strong coupling limit by using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The dual geometry is the rotating black 3-brane Type IIB supergravity solution with a single non-zero rotation parameter $r_{0}$ which sets a fixed mass scale corresponding to the scalar condensate $<\mathcal{O}>\,\,\sim r_{0}^4$ in the Coulomb branch. We introduce a new ensemble where $T$ and $<\mathcal{O}>$ are held fixed, i.e., the free energy $F(T,<\mathcal{O}>)$ is a function of $T$ and $<\mathcal{O}>$. We compute the equation of state (EoS) of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ cSYM at finite $T$, as well as the heavy quark-antiquark potential and the quantized mass spectrums of the scalar and spin-2 glueballs at $T=0$. By computing the Wilson loop (minimal surface) at $T=0$, we determine the heavy quark-antiquark potential $V(L)$ to be the Cornell potential, which is confining for large separation $L$. At $T\neq 0$, we find two black hole branches: the large black hole and small black hole branches. For the large black hole branch, that has positive specific heat, we find qualitatively similar EoS to that of pure Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. For the small black hole branch, that has negative specific heat, we find an EoS where the entropy and energy densities decrease with $T$. We also find a second-order phase transition between the large and small black hole branches with critical temperature $T_c=T_{min}$.

Strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma on the Coulomb branch II: Transport coefficients and hard probe parameters

We study $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory on the Coulomb branch (cSYM) by using its Type IIB supergravity dual. We compute the transport coefficients, and hard probe parameters of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ cSYM at finite temperature $T$. We use the rotating black 3-brane solution of Type IIB supergravity with a single non-zero rotation parameter $r_{0}$ after analytically continuing $r_{0}\rightarrow -ir_{0}$, and in an ensemble where the Hawking temperature $T$ and a scalar condensate $<\mathcal{O}>\sim r_{0}^4$ are held fixed. We find that the bulk viscosity to entropy density ratio of the large black hole branch decreases with temperature and has a maxima around the critical temperature $T_{c}$ while, for the small black hole branch, it increases with temperature. The other transport coefficients and parameters of hard probes, such as the conductivity, jet quenching parameter, drag force, and momentum diffusion coefficients of the large black hole branch increase with temperature and asymptote to their conformal value while, for the small black hole branch, they decrease with temperature.

Deep Inelastic Scattering on an Extremal RN-AdS Black Hole

We consider deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a large nucleus described as an extremal RN-AdS black hole using the holographic principle. Using the R-current correlators we determine the structure functions as a function Bjorken-x, and map it on a finite but large nucleus with fixed atomic number. The R-ratio of the nuclear structure functions exhibit strong shadowing at low-x.

Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Nucleus using Holography

We consider deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a nucleus described using a density expansion. In leading order, the scattering is dominated by the incoherent scattering on individual nucleons distributed using the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We use the holographic structure functions for DIS scattering on single nucleons to make a non-perturbative estimate of the nuclear structure function in leading order in the density. Our results are compared to the data in the large-x regime.

Energy loss of a nonaccelerating quark moving through a strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills vacuum or plasma in strong magnetic field

Using AdS/CFT correspondence, we find that a massless quark moving at the speed of light $v=1$, in arbitrary direction, through a strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) vacuum at $T=0$, in the presence of strong magnetic field $\mathcal{B}$, loses its energy at a rate linearly dependent on $\mathcal{B}$, i.e., $\frac{dE}{dt}=-\frac{\sqrtλ}{6π}\mathcal{B}$. We also show that a heavy quark of mass $M\neq 0$ moving at near the speed of light $v^2=v_{*}^2=1-\frac{4π^2 T^2}{\mathcal{B}}\simeq1$, in arbitrary direction, through a strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM plasma at finite temperature $T\neq 0$, in the presence of strong magnetic field $\mathcal{B}\gg T^2$, loses its energy at a rate linearly dependent on $\mathcal{B}$, i.e., $\frac{dE}{dt}=-\frac{\sqrtλ}{6π}\mathcal{B}v_{*}^2\simeq-\frac{\sqrtλ}{6π}\mathcal{B}$. Moreover, we argue that, in the strong magnetic field $\mathcal{B}\gg T^2$ (IR) regime, $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and adjoint QCD theories (when the adjoint QCD theory has four flavors of Weyl fermions and is at its conformal IR fixed point $λ=λ^*$) have the same microscopic degrees of freedom (i.e., gluons and lowest Landau levels of Weyl fermions) even though they have quite different microscopic degrees of freedom in the UV when we consider higher Landau levels. Therefore, in the strong magnetic field $\mathcal{B}\gg T^2$ (IR) regime, the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic properties of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and adjoint QCD plasmas, as well as the rates of energy loss of a quark moving through the plasmas, should be the same.

Jet quenching parameter of quark-gluon plasma in strong magnetic field: Perturbative QCD and AdS/CFT correspondence

We compute the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ of QCD plasma in the presence of strong magnetic field in both weakly and strongly coupled regimes. In weakly coupled regime, we compute $\hat q$ in perturbative QCD at complete leading order (that is, leading log as well as the constant under the log) in QCD coupling constant $α_s$, assuming the hierarchy of scales $α_s eB\ll T^2\ll eB$. We consider two cases of jet orientations with respect to the magnetic field: 1) the case of jet moving parallel to the magnetic field, 2) the case jet moving perpendicular to the magnetic field. In the former case, we find $\hat q\sim α_s^2 (eB)T\log(1/α_s)$, while in the latter we have $\hat q\sim α_s^2 (eB)T\log(T^2/α_seB)$. In both cases, this leading order result arises from the scatterings with thermally populated lowest Landau level quarks. In strongly coupled regime described by AdS/CFT correspondence, we find $\hat q\sim \sqrtλ(eB)T$ or $\hat q\sim\sqrtλ\sqrt{eB}T^2$ in the same hierarchy of $T^2\ll eB$ depending on whether the jet is moving parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field, respectively, which indicates a universal dependence of $\hat q$ on $(eB)T$ in both regimes for the parallel case, the origin of which should be the transverse density of lowest Landau level states proportional to $eB$. Finally, the asymmetric transverse momentum diffusion in the case of jet moving perpendicular to the magnetic field may give an interesting azimuthal asymmetry of the gluon Bremsstrahlung spectrum in the BDMPS-Z formalism.

Spin Polarized Photons from Axially Charged Plasma at Weak Coupling: Complete Leading Order

In the presence of (approximately conserved) axial charge in the QCD plasma at finite temperature, the emitted photons are spin-aligned, which is a unique P- and CP-odd signature of axial charge in the photon emission observables. We compute this "P-odd photon emission rate" in weak coupling regime at high temperature limit to complete leading order in the QCD coupling constant: the leading log as well as the constant under the log. As in the P-even total emission rate in the literature, the computation of P-odd emission rate at leading order consists of three parts: 1) Compton and Pair Annihilation processes with hard momentum exchange, 2) soft t- and u-channel contributions with Hard Thermal Loop re-summation, 3) Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) re-summation of collinear Bremstrahlung and Pair Annihilation. We present analytical and numerical evaluations of these contributions to our P-odd photon emission rate observable.

Thermalization of Quark-Gluon Plasma in Magnetic Field at Strong Coupling

We study thermalization of strongly coupled gauge theory plasma in the presence of magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We utilize the falling energy-shell model as a holographic description of gauge theory plasma undergoing thermalization, and find the effect of magnetic field on thermalization time in various space-time dimensions. Our results demonstrate that magnetic field universally hastens thermalization of strongly coupled gauge theory plasma.

Inverse magnetic catalysis in holographic models of QCD

We study the effect of magnetic field $B$ on the critical temperature $T_{c}$ of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition in hard-wall AdS/QCD, and holographic duals of flavored and unflavored $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang Mills theories on $\mathbb{R}^3\times \rm S^1$. For all of the holographic models, we find that $T_{c}(B)$ decreases with increasing magnetic field $B\ll T^2$, consistent with the inverse magnetic catalysis recently observed in lattice QCD for $B\lesssim 1~GeV^2$. We also predict that, for large magnetic field $B\gg T^2$, the critical temperature $T_{c}(B)$, eventually, starts to increase with increasing magnetic field $B\gg T^2$ and asymptotes to a constant value.

Gradient Correction to Photon Emission Rate at Strong Coupling

We compute the correction to the photon emission rate in first order of shear components of fluid velocity gradients, $σ_{ij}$, in near-equilibrium hydrodynamic plasma at strong coupling regime, using the real-time Schwinger-Keldysh formalism in AdS/CFT correspondence. Our result is an integral of an analytic expression. We observe that the gradient correction to the photon emission rate at strong coupling is about 0.3 - 0.4 times of the equilibrium rate in units of $σ_{ij}/T$.

Enhanced thermal photon and dilepton production in strongly coupled N=4 SYM plasma in strong magnetic field

We calculate the DC conductivity tensor of strongly coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills (SYM) plasma in a presence of a strong external magnetic field B>>T^2 by using its gravity dual and employing both the RG flow approach and membrane paradigm which give the same results. We find that, since the magnetic field B induces anisotropy in the plasma, different components of the DC conductivity tensor have different magnitudes depending on whether its components are in the direction of the magnetic field B. In particular, we find that a component of the DC conductivity tensor in the direction of the magnetic field B increases linearly with B while the other components (which are not in the direction of the magnetic field B) are independent of it. These results are consistent with the lattice computations of the DC conductivity tensor of the QCD plasma in an external magnetic field B. Using the DC conductivity tensor, we calculate the soft or low-frequency thermal photon and dilepton production rates of the strongly coupled N=4 SYM plasma in the presence of the strong external magnetic field B>>T^2. We find that the strong magnetic field B enhances both the thermal photon and dilepton production rates of the strongly coupled N=4 SYM plasma in a qualitative agreement with the experimentally observed enhancements at the heavy-ion collision experiments.
