Isocurvature Constraints on Portal Couplings

We consider portal models which are ultraweakly coupled with the Standard Model, and confront them with observational constraints on dark matter abundance and isocurvature perturbations. We assume the hidden sector to contain a real singlet scalar $s$ and a sterile neutrino $ψ$ coupled to $s$ via a pseudoscalar Yukawa term. During inflation, a primordial condensate consisting of the singlet scalar $s$ is generated, and its contribution to the isocurvature perturbations is imprinted onto the dark matter abundance. We compute the total dark matter abundance including the contributions from condensate decay and nonthermal production from the Standard Model sector. We then use the Planck limit on isocurvature perturbations to derive a novel constraint connecting dark matter mass and the singlet self coupling with the scale of inflation: $m_{\rm DM}/{\rm GeV}\lesssim 0.2λ_{\rm s}^{\scriptscriptstyle 3/8} \left(H_*/10^{\scriptscriptstyle 11}{\rm GeV}\right)^{\scriptscriptstyle -3/2}$. This constraint is relevant in most portal models ultraweakly coupled with the Standard Model and containing light singlet scalar fields.

Running coupling in SU(2) gauge theory with two adjoint fermions

We study SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group on the lattice. Using clover improved Wilson fermion action with hypercubic truncated stout smearing we perform simulations at larger coupling than earlier. We measure the evolution of the coupling constant using the step scaling method with Schrödinger functional and study the remaining discretization effects. At weak coupling we observe significant discretization effects, which make it difficult to obtain a fully controlled continuum limit. Nevertheless, the data remains consistent with the existence of a fixed point in the interval $2.2\lesssim g^{\ast 2}\lesssim 3$. We also measure the anomalous dimension and find its value at the fixed point is $γ^\ast\simeq 0.2\pm 0.03$.

Radiatively Induced Fermi Scale in Grand Unified Theories

We consider Grand Unified Theories in which the hierarchy between the unification and the Fermi scale emerges radiatively. Within the Pati-Salam framework, we show that it is possible to construct a viable model where the Higgs is an elementary pseudo-Goldstone boson, and the correct hierarchy is generated.

Approaching the conformal window: systematic study of the particle spectrum in SU(2) field theory with Nf=2, 4 and 6

It is expected that SU(2) gauge theory with $N_f$ fundamental fermions has an infrared fixed point when $N_f$ is between $\sim 6$ and 10. We study the hadron spectrum and scale setting in SU(2) gauge field theory with $N_f=2,4,6$ using hypercubic stout smeared Wilson-clover (HEX) action. The case $N_f=2$ is QCD-like, whereas $N_f=6$ is close to the lower edge of the conformal window. In our study the length scales are determined by using the gradient flow approach.

Gradient flow and IR fixed point in SU(2) with Nf=8 flavors

We study the running of the coupling in SU(2) gauge theory with 8 massless fundamental representation fermion flavours, using the gradient flow method with the Schrödinger functional boundary conditions. Gradient flow allows us to measure robust continuum limit for the step scaling function. The results show a clear indication of infrared fixed point consistent with perturbation theory.

Inflationary Imprints on Dark Matter

We show that dark matter abundance and the inflationary scale $H$ could be intimately related. Standard Model extensions with Higgs mediated couplings to new physics typically contain extra scalars displaced from vacuum during inflation. If their coupling to Standard Model is weak, they will not thermalize and may easily constitute too much dark matter reminiscent to the moduli problem. As an example we consider Standard Model extended by a $Z_2$ symmetric singlet $s$ coupled to the Standard Model Higgs $Φ$ via $λΦ^†Φs^2$. Dark matter relic density is generated non-thermally for $λ\lesssim 10^{-7}$. We show that the dark matter yield crucially depends on the inflationary scale. For $H\sim 10^{10}$ GeV we find that the singlet self-coupling and mass should lie in the regime $λ_{\rm s}\gtrsim 10^{-9}$ and $m_{\rm s}\lesssim 50$ GeV to avoid dark matter overproduction.

A model for dark matter, naturalness and a complete gauge unification

We consider dark matter in a minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) which breaks electroweak symmetry dynamically and leads to a complete unification of the SM and technicolor coupling constants. The unification scale is determined to be $M_{\rm U} \approx 2.2 \times 10^{15}$ GeV and the unified coupling $α_{\rm U} \approx 0.0304$. Moreover, unification strongly suggest that the technicolor sector of the model must become strong at the scale of ${\cal O}$(TeV). The model also contains a tightly constrained sector of mixing neutral fields stabilized by a discrete symmetry. We find the lightest of these states can be DM with a mass in the range $m_{\rm DM} \approx 30-800$ GeV. We find a large set of parameters that satisfy all available constraints from colliders and from dark matter search experiments. However, most of the available parameter space is within the reach of the next generation of DM search experiments. The model is also sensitive to a modest improvement in the measurement of the precision electroweak parameters.

Elementary Goldstone Higgs Boson and Dark Matter

We investigate a perturbative extension of the Standard Model featuring elementary pseudo-Goldstone Higgs and dark matter particles. These are two of the five Goldstone bosons parametrising the SU(4)/Sp(4) coset space. They acquire masses, and therefore become pseudo-Goldstone bosons, due to the embedding of the Yukawa and the electroweak gauge interactions that do not preserve the full SU(4) symmetry. At the one-loop order the top corrections dominate and align the vacuum in the direction where the Higgs is mostly a pseudo-Goldstone boson. Because of the perturbative and elementary nature of the theory, the quantum corrections are precisely calculable. The remaining pseudo-Goldstone boson is identified with the dark matter candidate because it is neutral with respect to the Standard Model and stable. By a direct comparison with the Large Hadron Collider experiments, the model is found to be phenomenologically viable. Furthermore the dark matter particle leads to the observed thermal relic density while respecting the most stringent current experimental constraints.

Strong phase transition, dark matter and vacuum stability from simple hidden sectors

Motivated by the possibility to explain dark matter abundance and strong electroweak phase transition, we consider simple extensions of the Standard Model containing singlet fields coupled with the Standard Model via a scalar portal. Concretely, we consider a basic portal model consisting of a singlet scalar with $Z_2$ symmetry and a model containing a singlet fermion connected with the Standard Model fields via a singlet scalar portal. We perform a Monte Carlo analysis of the parameter space of each model, and we find that in both cases the dark matter abundance can be produced either via freeze-out or freeze-in mechanisms, but only in the latter model one can obtain also a strong electroweak phase transition required by the successful electroweak baryogenesis. We impose the direct search limits and consider systematically the possibility that the model produces only a subdominant portion of the dark matter abundance. We also study the renormalization group evolution of the couplings of the model to determine if the scalar sector of the model remains stable and perturbative up to high scales. With explicit examples of benchmark values of the couplings at weak scale, we show that this is possible. Models of this type are further motivated by the possibility that the excursions of the Higgs field at the end of inflation are large and could directly probe the instability region of the Standard Model.

A minimal model for ${\rm SU}(N)$ vector dark matter

We study an extension of the Standard Model featuring a hidden sector that consists of a new scalar charged under a new SU$(N)_D$ gauge group, singlet under all Standard Model gauge interactions, and coupled with the Standard Model only via a Higgs portal. We assume that the theory is classically conformal, with electroweak symmetry breaking dynamically induced via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism operating in the hidden sector. Due to the symmetry breaking pattern, the SU$(N)_D$ gauge group is completely Higgsed and the resulting massive vectors of the hidden sector constitute a stable dark matter candidate. We perform a thorough scan over the parameter space of the model at different values of $N=2$, $3$, and $4$, and investigate the phenomenological constraints. We find that $N=2,3$ provide the most appealing model setting in light of present data from colliders and dark matter direct search experiments. We expect a heavy Higgs to be discovered at LHC by the end of Run II or the $N=3$ model to be ruled out.

Dynamical Origin of the Electroweak Scale and the 125 GeV Scalar

We consider a fully dynamical origin for the masses of weak gauge bosons and heavy quarks of the Standard Model. Electroweak symmetry breaking and the gauge boson masses arise from new strong dynamics, which leads to the appearance of a composite scalar in the spectrum of excitations. In order to generate mass for the Standard Model fermions, we consider extended gauge dynamics, effectively represented by four fermion interactions at presently accessible energies. By systematically treating these interactions, we show that they lead to a large reduction of the mass of the scalar resonance. Therefore, interpreting the scalar as the recently observed 125 GeV state, implies that the mass originating solely from new strong dynamics can be much heavier, {\em {\em i.e.}} of the order of 1 TeV. In addition to reducing the mass of the scalar resonance, we show that the four-fermion interactions allow for contributions to the oblique corrections in agreement with the experimental constraints. The couplings of the scalar resonance with the Standard Model gauge bosons and fermions are evaluated, and found to be compatible with the current LHC results. Additional new resonances are expected to be heavy, with masses of the order of a few TeVs, and hence accessible in future experiments.

The gradient flow running coupling in SU2 with 8 flavors

We present preliminary results of the gradient flow running coupling with Dirichlet boundary condition in the SU(2) gauge theory with 8 fermion flavours. Improvements to the gradient flow measurement allow us to obtain a robust continuum limit. The results are consistent with perturbative running in the weak coupling region.

Self-Interacting Dark Matter through the Higgs Portal

We study self-interacting dark matter coupled to the Standard Model via the Higgs portal. We consider a scenario where dark matter is a thermal relic with strong enough self interactions that can alleviate the problems of collisionless cold dark matter. We study constraints from direct detection searches, the LHC, and Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We show that the tension between these constraints and the need for sufficiently strong self-interactions with light mediators can be alleviated by coupling the mediator to either active or sterile neutrinos. Future direct detection data offers great potential and can be used to find evidence of a light mediator and verify that dark matter scatters via long-range self-interactions.

Standard Model with a real singlet scalar and inflation

We study the post-inflationary dynamics of the Standard Model Higgs and a real singlet scalar $s$, coupled together through a renormalizable coupling $λ_{sh}h^2s^2$, in a $Z_2$ symmetric model that may explain the observed dark matter abundance and/or the origin of baryon asymmetry. The initial values for the Higgs and $s$ condensates are given by inflationary fluctuations, and we follow their dissipation and relaxation to the low energy vacua. We find that both the lowest order perturbative and the non-perturbative decays are blocked by thermal effects and large background fields and that the condensates decay by two-loop thermal effects. Assuming instant reheating at $T=10^{16}$ GeV, the characteristic temperature for the Higgs condensate thermalization is found to be $T_h \sim 10^{14}$ GeV, whereas $s$ thermalizes typically around $T_s \sim 10^{6}$ GeV. By that time, the amplitude of the singlet is driven very close to the vacuum value by the expansion of the universe, unless the portal coupling takes a value $λ_{sh}\lesssim 10^{-7}$ and the singlet $s$ never thermalizes. With these values of the coupling, it is possible to slowly produce a sizeable fraction of the observed dark matter abundance via singlet condensate fragmentation and thermal Higgs scattering. Physics also below the electroweak scale can therefore be affected by the non-vacuum initial conditions generated by inflation.

125 GeV Higgs from a chiral-techniquark model

We consider the spin-zero spectrum of a strongly coupled gauge theory. In particular, we focus on the dynamical mass of the isosinglet scalar resonance in the presence of a four-fermion interaction external to the gauge dynamics. This is motivated by the extended technicolor framework for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Applying the large-$N$ limit, we sum all the leading-order contributions, and find that the corrections to the mass of the isosinglet scalar resonance can be large, potentially reducing its value from ${\cal O}(1)$ TeV to the observed value of 125 GeV.

Physical Naturalness and Dynamical Breaking of Classical Scale Invariance

We propose a model of a confining dark sector, dark technicolor, that communicates with the Standard Model through the Higgs portal. In this model electroweak symmetry breaking and dark matter share a common origin, and the electroweak scale is generated dynamically. Our motivation to suggest this model is the absense of evidence for new physics from recent LHC data. Although the conclusion is far from certain at this point, this lack of evidence may suggest that no mechanism exists at the electroweak scale to stabilise the Higgs mass against radiative corrections from UV physics. The usual reaction to this puzzling situation is to conclude that the stabilising new physics is either hidden from us by accident, or that it appears at energies that are currently inaccessible, such that nature is indeed fine-tuned. In order to re-examine the arguments that have lead to this dichotomy, we review the concept of naturalness in effective field theories, discussing in particular the role of quadratic divergences in relation to different energy scales. This leads us to suggest classical scale invariance as a guidline for model building, implying that explicit mass scales are absent in the underlying theory.

Dynamic AdS/QCD and the Spectrum of Walking Gauge Theories

We present a simple AdS/QCD model in which the formation of the chiral condensate is dynamically determined. The gauge dynamics is input through the running of the quark bilinear's anomalous dimension, gamma. The condensate provides a dynamically generated infra-red wall in the computation of mesonic bound state masses and decay constants. As an example, we use the model, with perturbative computations of the running of gamma, to study SU(3) gauge theory with a continuous number of quark flavours, Nf. We follow the behaviour of the spectrum as we approach the conformal window through a walking gauge theory regime. We show such walking theories display a BKT phase transition, with Miransky scaling, as one approaches the edge of the conformal window at the critical value of Nf. We show that these walking theories possess an enhanced quark condensate, a light Higgs like excitation and argue that the non-perturbative contribution to S falls to zero. We also study the deformation of the BKT transition when the quarks have a current mass which may be of use for understanding lattice simulations of walking theories.
