Dark Supersymmetry

We propose a model of Dark Supersymmetry, where a supersymmetric dark sector is coupled to the classically scale invariant non-supersymmetric Standard Model through the Higgs portal. The dark sector contains a mass scale that is protected against radiative corrections by supersymmetry, and the portal coupling mediates this scale to the Standard Model, resulting in a vacuum expectation value for the Higgs field and the usual electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. The supersymmetric dark sector contains dark matter candidates, and we show that the observed dark matter abundance is generated for a natural choice of parameters, while avoiding the current experimental bounds on direct detection. Future experiments can probe this scenario if the dark sector mass scale is not too high.

Ultraviolet Complete Technicolor and Higgs Physics at LHC

We construct a Technicolor model which provides masses for the electroweak gauge bosons and for all the Standard Model matter fields. Starting from an ultraviolet complete supersymmetric technicolor, we propose a scenario where all elementary scalars, gauginos, and higgsinos are decoupled at an energy scale substantially higher than the electroweak scale, therefore avoiding the little hierarchy problem of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The resulting low energy theory has an SU(3) global symmetry whose breaking to SO(3) leads to electroweak symmetry breaking. We study in detail the phenomenology of this theory and demonstrate that it reproduces the present LHC data at the same level of precision as the Standard Model itself.

Dark matter from unification

We consider a minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM), which leads to unification of the SM coupling constants, breaks electroweak symmetry dynamically by a new strongly coupled sector and leads to novel dark matter candidates. In this model, the coupling constant unification requires the existence of electroweak triplet and doublet fermions singlet under QCD and new strong dynamics underlying the Higgs sector. Among these new matter fields and a new right handed neutrino, we consider the mass and mixing patterns of the neutral states. We argue for a symmetry stabilizing the lightest mass eigenstates of this sector and determine the resulting relic density. The results are constrained by available data from colliders and direct and indirect dark matter experiments. We find the model viable and outline briefly future research directions.

The Mirage of the Fermi Scale

The discovery of a light Higgs boson at LHC may be suggesting that we need to revise our model building paradigms to understand the origin of the weak scale. We explore the possibility that the Fermi scale is not fundamental but rather a derived one, i.e. a low energy mirage. We show that this scenario emerges in a very natural way in models previously used to break the electroweak symmetry dynamically and suggest a simple dynamical framework for this idea. In our model the electroweak scale results from the interplay between two very high energy scales, one typically of the order of $\Luv\sim 10^{10}$ GeV and the other around $M_{\rm U} \sim 10^{16}$ GeV, although other values are also possible.

126 GeV Higgs boson in the top-seesaw model

We consider a model of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking built on the idea of top-seesaw mechanism. The model features a fourth generation of vector-like QCD quarks responsible for the origin of the top-seesaw mechanism and leading to the natural explanation of the large splitting between the top and bottom quark masses. Motivated by the LHC data on the couplings of the Higgs boson, we include the entire third generation of Standard Model matter fields into the model. We determine the low energy effective theory and the resulting low energy spectrum of states, and constrain the model parameters with constraints from the precision electroweak data and from the requirement of a light scalar state with quantum numbers of the Standard Model Higgs boson. Finally, we perform a global fit of the model parameters to the LHC Higgs data and show that the model is equally viable as the Standard Model itself, and predicts new states accessible at the LHC.

LHC Data and Aspects of New Physics

We consider the implications of current LHC data on new physics with strongly interacting sector(s). We parametrize the relevant interaction Lagrangian and study the best fit values in light of current data. These are then considered within a simple framework of bosonic technicolor. We consider first the effective Lagrangian containing only spin-0 composites of the underlying theory, which corresponds to a two Higgs doublet model. With respect to this baseline, the effects of the vector bosons, a staple in strong interacting theories, are illustrated by considering two cases: first, the case where the effects of the vector bosons arise only through their mixing with the electroweak SU(2)_L gauge fields and, second, the case where also a direct interaction term with neutral scalars exists. We find that the case of a W' coupling to the Higgs boson only via the mixing of vector fields produces a negligible improvement in the fit of the present data, while even a small direct coupling of the composite vector fields to the Higgs allows the tested model to fit optimally the experimental results.

Holographic Modelling of a Light Techni-Dilaton

We present a simplified holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking in gauge theory. The chiral condensate is represented by a single scalar field in AdS, with the gauge dynamics input through radial dependence of its mass, representing the running of the anomalous dimension of the qbar q operator. We discuss simple examples of the chiral transition out of the conformal window when the infrared value of the anomalous dimension, γ_m, is tuned to one (equivalently the AdS-scalar mass squared is tuned to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound of -4). The output of the model are the masses of the $\bar{q} q$ scalar meson bound states. We show in an explicit example that if the gradient of the running of the anomalous dimension falls to zero at the scale where the BF bound violation occurs, so that the theory becomes near conformal, then the theory possesses a techni-dilaton state that is parametrically lighter than the dynamically generated quark mass. Indeed the full spectrum of excited meson states also become light (relative to the techni-quark mass) as they approach a conformal spectrum.

Running coupling in SU(2) with adjoint fermions

We present a measurement of the Schrödinger Functional running coupling in SU(2) lattice gauge theory with adjoint fermions. We use HEX smearing and clover improvement to reduce the discretization effects. We obtain a robust continuum limit for the step scaling, which confirms the existence of a non-trivial fixed point.

Supersymmetric Extension of Technicolor & Fermion Mass Generation

We provide a complete extension of Minimal Walking Technicolor able to account for the standard model fermion masses. The model is supersymmetric at energies greater or equal to the technicolor compositeness scale. We integrate out, at the supersymmetry breaking scale, the elementary Higgses. We use the resulting four-fermion operators to derive the low energy effective theory. We then determine the associated tree-level vacuum and low energy spectrum properties. Furthermore we investigate the phenomenological viability of the model by comparing its predictions with electroweak precision tests and experimental bounds on the mass spectrum. We then turn to the composite Higgs phenomenology at the LHC and show that current data are already constraining the parameter space of the model.

Strong dynamics, minimal flavor and $R_b$

We discuss how models of electroweak symmetry breaking based on strong dynamics lead to observable contributions to the Z-boson decay width to bbbar pairs even in the absence of any extended sector responsible for dynamical generation of the masses of the Standard Model matter fields. These contributions are due to composite vector mesons mixing with the Standard Model electroweak gauge fields and lead to stringent constraints on models of this type. Constraints from unitarity of WW-scattering are also considered.

Constraining on dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking via R_b

New strong gauge interactions remain a viable source for the electroweak symmetry breaking. However, addressing the generation of fermion masses remains a challenge. A basic observable which provides stringent constraints on the flavor extensions of Technicolor-type models is the decay rate of the Z boson into a bbbar-pair. In this paper we provide a general framework to evaluate the resulting constraints on the technicolor theory level taking into account the contributions from the vector and axial vector mesons and discuss the consequences for phenomenology.

Top-seesaw assisted technicolor model and a $m=126$ GeV scalar

We consider a model of strong dynamics able to account for the origin of the electroweak symmetry breaking and heavy quark masses. The model is based on a technicolor sector, augmented with topcolor and top-seesaw mechanism to assist in the generation of heavy quark masses. The low energy effective theory is a particular three Higgs doublet model. The additional feature is the possibility of the existence of composite higher spin states beyond the scalars, which are shown to be essential in this model to provide extra contributions in the higgs decays into two photons. We provide a detailed strategy and analysis how this type of models are to be constrained with the present data.

Effect of the Schrödinger functional boundary conditions on the convergence of step scaling

Recently several lattice collaborations have studied the scale dependence of the coupling in theories with different gauge groups and fermion representations using the Schrödinger functional method. This has motivated us to look at the convergence of the perturbative step scaling to its continuum limit with gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3) with Wilson fermions in the fundamental, adjoint or sextet representations. We have found that while the improved Wilson action does remove the linear terms from the step scaling, the convergence is extremely slow with the standard choices of the boundary conditions for the background field. We show that the situation can be improved by careful choice of the boundary fields.

Invisible Higgs and Dark Matter

We investigate the possibility that a massive weakly interacting fermion simultaneously provides for a dominant component of the dark matter relic density and an invisible decay width of the Higgs boson at the LHC. As a concrete model realizing such dynamics we consider the minimal walking technicolor, although our results apply more generally. Taking into account the constraints from the electroweak precision measurements and current direct searches for dark matter particles, we find that such scenario is heavily constrained, and large portions of the parameter space are excluded.

Finite Temperature Phase Diagrams of Gauge Theories

We discuss finite temperature phase diagrams of SU(N) gauge theory with massless fermions as a function of the number of fermion flavors. Inside the conformal window we find a phase boundary separating two different conformal phases. Below the conformal window we find different phase structures depending on if the beta function of the theory has a first or higher order zero at the lower boundary of the conformal window. We also outline how the associated behaviors will help in distinguishing different types of theories using lattice simulations.

Determining the conformal window: SU(2) gauge theory with N_f = 4, 6 and 10 fermion flavours

We study the evolution of the coupling in SU(2) gauge field theory with $N_f=4$, 6 and 10 fundamental fermion flavours on the lattice. These values are chosen close to the expected edges of the conformal window, where the theory possesses an infrared fixed point. We use improved Wilson-clover action, and measure the coupling in the Schrödinger functional scheme. At four flavours we observe that the couping grows towards the infrared, implying QCD-like behaviour, whereas at ten flavours the results are compatible with a Banks-Zaks type infrared fixed point. The six flavour case remains inconclusive: the evolution of the coupling is seen to become slower at the infrared, but the accuracy of the results falls short from fully resolving the fate of the coupling. We also measure the mass anomalous dimension for the $N_f=6$ case.

A hybrid 4$^{\textrm{th}}$ generation: Technicolor with top-seesaw

We consider a model combining technicolor with the top quark condensation. As a concrete model for Technicolor we use the Minimal Walking Technicolor, and this will result in the appearance of a novel fourth generation whose leptons constitute a usual weak doublet while the QCD quarks are vectorlike singlets under the weak interactions. We carry out an analysis of the mass spectra and precision measurement constraints, and find the model viable. We contrast the model with present LHC data and discuss the future prospects.
