Hyperelliptic curves, L-polynomials, and random matrices

We analyze the distribution of unitarized L-polynomials Lp(T) (as p varies) obtained from a hyperelliptic curve of genus g <= 3 defined over Q. In the generic case, we find experimental agreement with a predicted correspondence (based on the Katz-Sarnak random matrix model) between the distributions of Lp(T) and of characteristic polynomials of random matrices in the compact Lie group USp(2g). We then formulate an analogue of the Sato-Tate conjecture for curves of genus 2, in which the generic distribution is augmented by 22 exceptional distributions, each corresponding to a compact subgroup of USp(4). In every case, we exhibit a curve closely matching the proposed distribution, and can find no curves unaccounted for by our classification.

Good formal structures for flat meromorphic connections, II: Excellent schemes

Given a flat meromorphic connection on an excellent scheme over a field of characteristic zero, we prove existence of good formal structures after blowing up; this extends a theorem of Mochizuki for algebraic varieties. The argument combines a numerical criterion for good formal structures from a previous paper, with an analysis based on the geometry of an associated valuation space (Riemann-Zariski space). We obtain a similar result over the formal completion of an excellent scheme along a closed subscheme. If we replace the excellent scheme by a complex analytic variety, we obtain a similar but weaker result in which the blowup can only be constructed in a small neighborhood of a prescribed point.

Semistable reduction for overconvergent F-isocrystals, IV: Local semistable reduction at nonmonomial valuations

We complete our proof that given an overconvergent F-isocrystal on a variety over a field of positive characteristic, one can pull back along a suitable generically finite cover to obtain an isocrystal which extends, with logarithmic singularities and nilpotent residues, to some complete variety. We also establish an analogue for F-isocrystals overconvergent inside a partial compactification. By previous results, this reduces to solving a local problem in a neighborhood of a valuation of height 1 and residual transcendence degree 0. We do this by studying the variation of some numerical invariants attached to p-adic differential modules, analogous to the irregularity of a complex meromorphic connection. This allows for an induction on the transcendence defect of the valuation, i.e., the discrepancy between the dimension of the variety and the rational rank of the valuation.

Explicit Coleman integration for hyperelliptic curves

Coleman's theory of p-adic integration figures prominently in several number-theoretic applications, such as finding torsion and rational points on curves, and computing p-adic regulators in K-theory (including p-adic heights on elliptic curves). We describe an algorithm for computing Coleman integrals on hyperelliptic curves, and its implementation in Sage.

Relative p-adic Hodge theory and Rapoport-Zink period domains

As an example of relative p-adic Hodge theory, we sketch the construction of the universal admissible filtration of an isocrystal (ϕ$-module) over the completion of the maximal unramified extension of Q_p, together with the associated universal crystalline local system.

Good formal structures on flat meromorphic connections, I: Surfaces

We give a criterion under which one can obtain a good decomposition (in the sense of Malgrange) of a formal flat connection on a complex analytic or algebraic variety of arbitrary dimension. The criterion is stated in terms of the spectral behavior of differential operators, and generalizes Robba's construction of the Hukuhara-Levelt-Turrittin decomposition in the one-dimensional case. As an application, we prove the existence of good formal structures for flat meromorphic connections on surfaces after suitable blowing up; this verifies a conjecture of Sabbah, and extends a result of Mochizuki for algebraic connections. Our proof uses a finiteness argument on the valuative tree associated to a point on a surface, in order to verify the numerical criterion.

Some new directions in p-adic Hodge theory

We recall some basic constructions from p-adic Hodge theory, then describe some recent results in the subject. We chiefly discuss the notion of B-pairs, introduced recently by Berger, which provides a natural enlargement of the category of p-adic Galois representations. (This enlargement, in a different form, figures in recent work of Colmez, Bellaiche, and Chenevier on trianguline representations.) We also discuss results of Liu that indicate that the formalism of Galois cohomology, including Tate local duality, extends to B-pairs.

Differential modules on p-adic polyannuli

We consider variational properties of some numerical invariants, measuring convergence of local horizontal sections, associated to differential modules on polyannuli over a nonarchimedean field of characteristic zero. This extends prior work in the one-dimensional case of Christol, Dwork, Robba, Young, et al. Our results do not require positive residue characteristic; thus besides their relevance to the study of Swan conductors for isocrystals, they are germane to the formal classification of flat meromorphic connections on complex manifolds.

Swan conductors for p-adic differential modules, II: Global variation

Using a local construction from a previous paper, we exhibit a numerical invariant, the differential Swan conductor, for an isocrystal on a variety over a perfect field of positive characteristic overconvergent along a boundary divisor; this leads to an analogous construction for certain p-adic and l-adic representations of the etale fundamental group of a variety. We then demonstrate some variational properties of this definition for overconvergent isocrystals, paying special attention to the case of surfaces.

Detecting integral polyhedral functions

We study the class of real-valued functions on convex subsets of R^n which are computed by the maximum of finitely many affine functionals with integer slopes. We prove several results to the effect that this property of a function can be detected by sampling on small subsets of the domain. In so doing, we recover in a unified way some prior results of the first author (some joint with Liang Xiao). We also prove that a function on R^2 is a tropical polynomial if and only if its restriction to each translate of a generic tropical line is a tropical polynomial.

Semistable reduction for overconvergent F-isocrystals, III: Local semistable reduction at monomial valuations

We resolve the local semistable reduction problem for overconvergent F-isocrystals at monomial valuations (Abhyankar valuations of height 1 and residue transcendence degree 0). We first introduce a higher-dimensional analogue of the generic radius of convergence for a p-adic differential module, which obeys a convexity property. We then combine this convexity property with a form of the p-adic local monodromy theorem for so-called fake annuli.

p-adic cohomology

This is a survey of some recent developments concerning the p-adic cohomology of algebraic varieties over fields of positive characteristic and local fields of mixed characteristic, plus some related areas like p-adic Hodge theory.

Generalizations of product-free subsets

For any group G of order n, a subset A of G is said to be product-free if there is no solution of the equation ab=c with a,b,c in A. Previous results of Gowers showed that the size of any product-free subset of G is at most n/d^(1/3), where d is the smallest dimension of a nontrivial representation of G. However, this upper bound does not match the best lower bound. We will generalize the upper bound to the case of product-poor subsets A, in which the equation ab=c is allowed to have a few solutions with a,b,c in A. We prove that the upper bound for the size of product-poor subsets matches the best lower bound in many families of groups. We will also generalize the concept of product-free to the case in which we have many subsets of a group, and different constraints about products of the elements in the subsets.

Product-free subsets of groups, then and now

A subset of a group is product-free if it does not contain elements a, b, c such that ab = c. We review progress on the problem of determining the size of the largest product-free subset of an arbitrary finite group, including a lower bound due to the author, and a recent upper bound due to Gowers. The bound of Gowers is more general; it allows three different sets A, B, C such that one cannot solve ab = c with a in A, b in B, c in C. We exhibit a refinement of the lower bound construction which shows that for this broader question, the bound of Gowers is essentially optimal.

Search techniques for root-unitary polynomials

We give an anecdotal discussion of the problem of searching for polynomials with all roots on the unit circle, whose coefficients are rational numbers subject to certain congruence conditions. We illustrate with an example from a calculation in p-adic cohomology made by Abbott, Kedlaya, and Roe, in which (using an implementation developed with Andre Wibisono) we recover the zeta function of a surface over a finite field.

Swan conductors for p-adic differential modules, I: A local construction

We define a numerical invariant, the differential Swan conductor, for certain differential modules on a rigid analytic annulus over a p-adic field. This gives a definition of a conductor for p-adic Galois representations with finite local monodromy over an equal characteristic discretely valued field, which agrees with the usual Swan conductor when the residue field is perfect. We also establish analogues of some key properties of the usual Swan conductor, such as integrality (the Hasse-Arf theorem), and the fact that the graded pieces of the associated ramification filtration on Galois groups are abelian and killed by p.

Slope filtrations for relative Frobenius

The slope filtration theorem gives a partial analogue of the eigenspace decomposition of a linear transformation, for a Frobenius-semilinear endomorphism of a finite free module over the Robba ring (the ring of germs of rigid analytic functions on an unspecified open annulus of outer radius 1) over a discretely valued field. In this paper, we give a third-generation proof of this theorem, which both introduces some new simplifications (particularly the use of faithfully flat descent, to recover the theorem from a classification theorem of Dieudonne-Manin type) and extends the result to allow an arbitrary action on coefficients (previously the action on coefficients had to itself be a lift of an absolute Frobenius). This extension is relevant to a study of (phi, Gamma)-modules associated to families of p-adic Galois representations, presently being initiated by Berger and Colmez.
