Locally Decodable Codes From Nice Subsets of Finite Fields and Prime Factors of Mersenne Numbers

A k-query Locally Decodable Code (LDC) encodes an n-bit message x as an N-bit codeword C(x), such that one can probabilistically recover any bit x_i of the message by querying only k bits of the codeword C(x), even after some constant fraction of codeword bits has been corrupted. The major goal of LDC related research is to establish the optimal trade-off between length and query complexity of such codes. Recently [Y] introduced a novel technique for constructing locally decodable codes and vastly improved the upper bounds for code length. The technique is based on Mersenne primes. In this paper we extend the work of [Y] and argue that further progress via these methods is tied to progress on an old number theory question regarding the size of the largest prime factors of Mersenne numbers. Specifically, we show that every Mersenne number m=2^t-1 that has a prime factor p>m^γyields a family of k(γ)-query locally decodable codes of length Exp(n^{1/t}). Conversely, if for some fixed k and all ε> 0 one can use the technique of [Y] to obtain a family of k-query LDCs of length Exp(n^ε); then infinitely many Mersenne numbers have prime factors arger than known currently.

Mass formulas for local Galois representations

Bhargava has given a formula, derived from a formula of Serre, computing a certain count of extensions of a local field, weighted by conductor and by number of automorphisms. We interpret this result as a counting formula for permutation representations of the absolute Galois group of the local field, then speculate on variants of this formula in which the role of the symmetric group is played by other groups. We prove an analogue of Bhargava's formula for representations into a Weyl group in the B_n series, which suggests a link with integration on p-adic groups. We also obtain analogous positive results in odd residual characteristic, and negative results in residual characteristic 2, for the D_n series (in the appendix) and the exceptional group G_2.

Semistable reduction for overconvergent F-isocrystals, I: Unipotence and logarithmic extensions

Let X be a smooth variety over a field of positive characteristic, and let E be an overconvergent isocrystal on X. We establish a criterion for the existence of a "canonical logarithmic extension" of E to a good compactification of X. In the process, we construct a category of overconvergent log-isocrystals and discuss its basic properties. In subsequent work, we will use these results to show that a canonical logarithmic extension always exists after pulling back E along a suitable cover of X.

Bounding Picard numbers of surfaces using p-adic cohomology

Motivated by an application to LDPC (low density parity check) algebraic geometry codes described by Voloch and Zarzar, we describe a computational procedure for establishing an upper bound on the arithmetic or geometric Picard number of a smooth projective surface over a finite field, by computing the Frobenius action on p-adic cohomology to a small degree of p-adic accuracy. We have implemented this procedure in Magma; using this implementation, we exhibit several examples, such as smooth quartics over F_2 and F_3 with arithmetic Picard number 1, and a smooth quintic over F_2 with geometric Picard number 1. We also produce some examples of smooth quartics with geometric Picard number 2, which by a construction of van Luijk also have trivial geometric automorphism group.

The p-adic local monodromy theorem for fake annuli

We establish a generalization of the p-adic local monodromy theorem (of Andre, Mebkhout, and the author) in which differential equations on rigid analytic annuli are replaced by differential equations on so-called fake annuli. The latter correspond loosely to completions of a Laurent polynomial ring with respect to a monomial valuation. The result represents a step towards a higher-dimensional version of the p-adic local monodromy theorem (the "problem of semistable reduction"); it can also be viewed as a slightly novel presentation of the original p-adic local monodromy theorem.

A formulation of difference Galois theory

As a simple corollary of a highly general framework for differential and difference Galois theory introduced by Y. Andre, we formulate a version of the Galois correspondence that applies over a difference field with arbitrary field of constants.

On the geometry of p-typical covers in characteristic p

A p-typical cover of a connected scheme on which p=0 is a finite etale cover whose monodromy group (i.e., the Galois group of its normal closure) is a p-group. The geometry of such covers exhibits some unexpectedly pleasant behaviors; building on work of Katz, we demonstrate some of these. These include a criterion for when a morphism induces an isomorphism of the p-typical quotients of the etale fundamental groups, and a decomposition theorem for p-typical covers of polynomial rings over an algebraically closed field.

Quantum computation of zeta functions of curves

We exhibit a quantum algorithm for determining the zeta function of a genus g curve over a finite field F_q, which is polynomial in g and log(q). This amounts to giving an algorithm to produce provably random elements of the class group of a curve, plus a recipe for recovering a Weil polynomial from enough of its cyclic resultants. The latter effectivizes a result of Fried in a restricted setting.

Finiteness of rigid cohomology with coefficients

We prove that for any field k of characteristic p>0, any separated scheme X of finite type over k, and any overconvergent F-isocrystal E over X, the rigid cohomology H^i(X, E) and rigid cohomology with compact supports H^i_c(X,E) are finite dimensional vector spaces. We also establish Poincare duality and the Kunneth formula with coefficients. The arguments use a pushforward construction in relative dimension 1, based on a relative version of Crew's conjecture on the quasi-unipotence of certain p-adic differential equations.

Slope filtrations revisited

We give a "second generation" exposition of the slope filtration theorem for modules with Frobenius action over the Robba ring, providing a number of simplifications in the arguments. Some of these are inspired by parallel work of Hartl and Pink, which points out some analogies with the formalism of stable vector bundles.

Fourier transforms and p-adic "Weil II"

Building on work of Crew, we give a rigid cohomological analogue of the main result of Deligne's "Weil II"; this makes it possible to give a purely p-adic proof of the Weil conjectures. Ingredients include a p-adic analogue of Laumon's application of the geometric Fourier transform in the l-adic setting, as well as recent results on p-adic differential equations, due to Andre, Christol, Crew, Kedlaya, Matsuda, Mebkhout, and Tsuzuki.

Orbits of automorphism groups of fields

We address several specific aspects of the following general question: can a field K have so many automorphisms that the action of the automorphism group on the elements of K has relatively few orbits? We prove that any field which has only finitely many orbits under its automorphism group is finite. We extend the techniques of that proof to approach a broader conjecture, which asks whether the automorphism group of one field over a subfield can have only finitely many orbits on the complement of the subfield. Finally, we apply similar methods to analyze the field of Mal'cev-Neumann "generalized power series" over a base field; these form near-counterexamples to our conjecture when the base field has characteristic zero, but often fall surprisingly far short in positive characteristic.

Local monodromy of p-adic differential equations: an overview

This primarily expository article collects together some facts from the literature about the monodromy of differential equations on a p-adic (rigid analytic) annulus, though often with simpler proofs. These include Matsuda's classification of quasi-unipotent nabla-modules, the Christol-Mebkhout construction of the ramification filtration, and the Christol-Dwork Frobenius antecedent theorem. We also briefly discuss the p-adic local monodromy theorem without proof.

Finite automata and algebraic extensions of function fields

We give an automata-theoretic description of the algebraic closure of the rational function field F_q(t) over a finite field, generalizing a result of Christol. The description takes place within the Hahn-Mal'cev-Neumann field of "generalized power series" over F_q. Our approach includes a characterization of well-ordered sets of rational numbers whose base p expansions are generated by a finite automaton, as well as some techniques for computing in the algebraic closure; these include an adaptation to positive characteristic of Newton's algorithm for finding local expansions of plane curves. We also conjecture a generalization of our results to several variables.

Frobenius modules and de Jong's theorem

Let k be a field of characteristic p>0. A theorem of de Jong shows that morphisms of modules over W(k)[[t]] with Frobenius and connection structure descend from the completion of W(k)((t)). A careful reading of de Jong's proof suggests the possibility that an analogous theorem holds for modules with only a Frobenius structure. We show that this analogue holds in one weak formulation and fails in a second stronger formulation.

In search of Robbins stability

We speculate on whether a certain p-adic stability phenomenon, observed by David Robbins empirically for Dodgson condensation, appears in other nonlinear recurrence relations that "unexpectedly" produce integer or nearly-integer sequences. We exhibit an example (number friezes) where this phenomenon provably occurs.

More etale covers of affine spaces in positive characteristic

We prove that every geometrically reduced projective variety of pure dimension n over a field of positive characteristic admits a morphism to projective n-space, etale away from the hyperplane H at infinity, which maps a chosen divisor into H and some chosen smooth points not on the divisor to points not in H. This improves our earlier result in math.AG/0207150, which was restricted to infinite perfect fields. We also prove a related result that controls the behavior of divisors through the chosen point.
