Full faithfulness for overconvergent F-isocrystals

Let X be a smooth variety over a field of characteristic p>0. We prove that the forgetful functor from the category of overconvergent F-isocrystals on X to the category of convergent F-isocrystals is fully faithful. The argument uses the quasi-unipotence theorem for overconvergent F-isocrystals (recently proved independently by Andre, Mebkhout, and the author; see math.AG/0110124), plus arguments of de Jong. In the process, we establish a theorem of Quillen-Suslin type (i.e., every finite projective module is free) over rings of overconvergent power series.

Semistable reduction for overconvergent F-isocrystals on a curve

Given a smooth affine curve X over a field k of positive characteristic, and an overconvergent F-isocrystal on X, we prove after replacing k by a finite purely inseparable extension, there exists a finite separable cover of X, the pullback of the isocrystal along which extends to a log-F-isocrystal on a smooth compactification. This resolves a weak form of the global version of a conjecture of Crew; the proof uses the local version of the conjecture, established separately by Andre, Mebkhout and the author.

A p-adic local monodromy theorem

We produce a canonical filtration for locally free sheaves on an open p-adic annulus equipped with a Frobenius structure. Using this filtration, we deduce a conjecture of Crew on p-adic differential equations, analogous to Grothendieck's local monodromy theorem (also a consequence of results of Andre and of Mebkhout). Namely, given a finite locally free sheaf on an open p-adic annulus with a connection and a compatible Frobenius structure, the corresponding module admits a basis over a finite cover of the annulus on which the connection acts via a nilpotent matrix. Note: this preprint improves on results from our previous preprints math.AG/0102173, math.AG/0105244, math.AG/0106192, math.AG/0106193 but does not explicitly invoke any results from these preprints.

Etale covers of affine spaces in positive characteristic

We prove that every projective variety of dimension n over a field of positive characteristic admits a morphism to projective n-space, etale away from the hyperplane H at infinity, which maps a chosen divisor into H and a chosen smooth point not on the divisor to some point not in H.

Counting Points on Hyperelliptic Curves using Monsky-Washnitzer Cohomology

We describe an algorithm for counting points on an arbitrary hyperelliptic curve over a finite field of odd characteristic, using Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology to compute a p-adic approximation to the characteristic polynomial of Frobenius. For fixed p, the asymptotic running time for a curve of genus g over the field of p^n elements is O(g^{4+ε} n^{3+ε}).

Algebraic Generalized Power Series and Automata

A theorem of Christol states that a power series over a finite field is algebraic over the polynomial ring if and only if its coefficients can be generated by a finite automaton. Using Christol's result, we prove that the same assertion holds for generalized power series (whose index sets may be arbitrary well-ordered sets of nonnegative rationals).

The Newton polygons of overconvergent F-crystals

R. Crew conjectured that every overconvergent F-isocrystal over k((t)) (k a field of positive characteristic) is quasi-unipotent (equivalently, potentially semistable), and so has ``generic'' and ``special'' Newton polygons. It is easy to construct a Newton polygon for an arbitrary overconvergent F-crystal that coincides with the generic Newton polygon for potentially semistable crystals. We give an analogous construction for the special Newton polygon, by showing that the F-crystal can be trivialized over a large auxiliary ring. In a subsequent preprint, we use this construction to prove the aforementioned conjecture.

Quasi-unipotence of overconvergent F-crystals

Building on our previous papers (math.AG/0102173, math.AG/0105244, math.AG/0106192) we prove that every overconvergent F-isocrystal over k((t)) is quasi-unipotent (in the sense of Crew), for k a field of positive characteristic.

Unipotency and semistability of overconvergent F-crystals

In this paper (part of the author's PhD thesis), we introduce the notions of semistability and potential semistability of overconvergent F-crystals over an equal characteristic local field. We establish their equivalence with the notions of unipotency and quasi-unipotency given by Crew, and to recast the conjecture that every overconvergent crystal is quasi-unipotent in terms of potential semistability. Consequences, including an extension of de Jong's extension theorem for F-crystals to the logarithmic case, will appear in a subsequent paper.

Descent of morphisms of overconvergent F-crystals

Tsuzuki has conjectured that for crystals with Frobenius and connection over a local field k((t)), the embedding of the category of overconvergent crystals into the category of convergent crystals is fully faithful. We prove Tsuzuki's conjecture restricted to the subcategory of potentially semistable (or quasi-unipotent) crystals, following de Jong's proof of a slightly weaker result. We also prove Tsuzuki's conjecture restricted to crystals with at most two distinct slopes.

Crew's Euler characteristic formula fails for nonzero slopes

A result of Crew implies that for an etale Galois p-cover of smooth proper varieties over a field of characteristic p, the alternating sum of the p-ranks of the cohomology groups behave like Euler characteristics in characteristic 0. That is, the sum for the top curve equals the sum for the bottom curve times the degree of the cover. We exhibit an example to show that this relation fails in general if the p-rank is replaced by the part of some fixed slope (other than 0).

Unramified alternating extensions of quadratic fields

We exhibit, for n at least 5, infinitely many quadratic number fields admitting unramified degree n extensions with prescribed signature whose normal closures have Galois group A_n. This generalizes a result of Uchida and Yamamoto, which did not include the ability to restrict the signature, and a result of Yamamura, which was the case n=5.

Power series and p-adic algebraic closures

In an earlier preprint (math.AG/9810142) we gave an explicit description of the algebraic closure of the field of power series over a field of characteristic p, in terms of "generalized power series". In this paper, we give an analogous description of the algebraic closure of the fraction field of the Witt ring of a field of characteristic p, using an analogue of generalized power series in mixed characteristic due to Poonen.

Another Combinatorial Determinant

We present a variation and generalization of a determinant evaluation of Wilf (math.CO/9809120). His result concerns a matrix whose entries are the coefficients of powers of a given power series; we replace the powers by repeated compositions and obtain similar results.
