Initial value problem for magnetic field in heavy ion collisions

When quark-gluon plasma emerges in the wake of a heavy-ion collision, magnetic field created by the valence charges has already permitted the entire interaction region. Evolution of this "initial" field in plasma is governed by Maxwell equations in electrically conducting medium. As the plasma expands external valence charges induce magnetic field that also contributes to the total magnetic field in plasma. We solve the initial value problem describing these processes and argue that the initial magnetic field often dominates over the one induced by the valence charges. In particular, it grows approximately proportional to the collision energy, unlike the induced component, which is energy-independent. As a result, magnetic field has a significant phenomenological influence on quark-gluon plasma at the LHC energies over its entire lifetime.

Coulomb corrections to DIS off heavy nuclei

An essential part of experimental program at the future Electron Ion Collider is the study of the nuclear structure and dynamics at low $x$. DIS at low $x$ is characterized by large longitudinal coherence length that by far exceeds radii of heavy nuclei. The coherent behavior is essential feature of the nuclear matter at low $x$. This pertains not only to the strong interactions, but also to electromagnetic ones. Coherent interactions of a projectile with nucleons in a heavy nucleus are characterized by parameters $α_s^2 A^{1/3}\sim 1$ and $αZ\sim 1 $ in strong and electromagnetic interactions respectively. Contributions exhibiting non-trivial dependence on $αZ$ are called the Coulomb corrections. We compute the Coulomb corrections to the cross sections of the semi-inclusive and diffractive DIS. We show that they violate the geometric scaling in a wide range of photon virtualities and is weakly $x$-independent. In heavy nuclei at low $Q^2$ the Coulomb correction to the total and diffractive cross sections is about 20% and 40% correspondingly.

On the role of magnetic field in photon excess in heavy ion collisions

Synchrotron photon spectrum in heavy-ion collisions is computed taking into account the spatial and temporal structure of magnetic field. It is found that a significant fraction of photon excess in heavy-ion collisions in the region $k_\bot=1-3$GeV can be attributed to the synchrotron radiation. Azimuthal anisotropy of the synchrotron photon spectrum is characterized by the Fourier coefficients $v_2=4/7$ and $v_4=1/10$ that are independent of photon momentum and centrality.

Violation of geometric scaling in DIS due to Coulomb corrections

I compute the Coulomb correction to the total and diffractive cross sections for virtual photon scattering off a heavy nucleus at low $x$. I show that it violates the geometric scaling in a wide range of photon virtualities and is weakly $x$-independent. In heavy nuclei at low $Q^2$ the Coulomb correction to the total and diffractive cross sections is about 20% and 40% correspondingly.

Coulomb corrections to photon and dilepton production in high energy pA collisions

We consider particle production in high energy pA collisions. In addition to the coherent interactions with the nuclear color field, we take into account coherent interactions with the nuclear electromagnetic Coulomb field. Employing the dipole model, we sum up the leading multiple color and electromagnetic interactions and derive inclusive cross sections for photon and dilepton production. We found that the Coulomb corrections are up to $10\%$ at $\sqrt{s}=200$~GeV per nucleon.

Time and space dependence of electromagnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Exact analytical solution for the space-time evolution of electromagnetic field in electrically conducting nuclear matter produced in heavy-ion collisions is discussed. It is argued that the parameter that controls the strength of the matter effect on the field evolution is $σγb$, where $σ$ is electrical conductivity, $γ$ is the Lorentz boost-factor and $b$ is the characteristic transverse size of the matter. When this parameter is of the order one or larger, which is the case at RHIC and LHC, space-time dependence of electromagnetic field is completely different form that in vacuum.

Magnetic contribution to dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions

We calculate a novel "magnetic contribution" to the dilepton spectrum in heavy-ion collisions arising from interaction of relativistic quarks with intense magnetic field. Synchrotron radiation by quarks, which can be approximated by the equivalent photon flux, is followed by dilepton decay of photons in intense magnetic field. We argue that "magnetic contribution" dominates the dilepton spectrum at low lepton energies, whereas a conventional photon dilepton decay dominates at higher lepton energies.

Particle production in strong electromagnetic fields in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

I review the origin and properties of electromagnetic fields produced in heavy ion collisions. The field strength immediately after a collision is proportional to the collision energy and reaches eB\sim(m_π)^2 at RHIC and eB\sim10 (m_π)^2 at LHC. I demonstrate by explicit analytical calculation that after dropping by about one-two orders of magnitude during the first fm/c of plasma expansion, it freezes out and lasts for as long as quark-gluon plasma exists as a consequence of finite electrical conductivity of the plasma. Magnetic field breaks spherical symmetry in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane and therefore all kinetic coefficients are anisotropic. I examine viscosity of QGP and show that magnetic field induces azimuthal anisotropy on plasma flow even in spherically symmetric geometry. Very strong electromagnetic field has an important impact on particle production. I discuss the problem of energy loss and polarization of fast fermions due to synchrotron radiation, consider photon decay induced by magnetic field, elucidate J/Psi dissociation via Lorentz ionization mechanism and examine electromagnetic radiation by plasma. I conclude that all processes in QGP are affected by strong electromagnetic field and call for experimental investigation.

Beyond the proton collinear factorization in heavy quark production in pA collisions at low x

We consider heavy quark production in high energy pA collisions and investigate the contribution of interactions of valence quarks of proton with the nucleus. The often made assumption that valence quarks of proton can be factored out is justified only if the nucleus saturation momentum is much smaller than the heavy quark mass. This is not the case in phenomenologically relevant situations. Breakdown of factorization manifests itself in substantial decrease of the cross section at large total and small relative transverse momenta of the heavy quark -antiquark pair.

Electromagnetic radiation by quark-gluon plasma in magnetic field

The electromagnetic radiation by quark-gluon plasma in strong magnetic field is calculated. The contributing processes are synchrotron radiation and one--photon annihilation. It is shown that in relativistic heavy--ion collisions at RHIC and LHC synchrotron radiation dominates over the annihilation. Moreover, it constitutes a significant part of all photons produced by the plasma at low transverse momenta; its magnitude depends on the plasma temperature and the magnetic field strength. Electromagnetic radiation in magnetic field is probably the missing piece that resolves a discrepancy between the theoretical models and the experimental data. It is argued that electromagnetic radiation increases with the magnetic field strength and plasma temperature.

Properties of inclusive hadron production in Deep Inelastic Scattering on heavy nuclei at low x

In this paper we present a comprehensive study of inclusive hadron production in DIS at low $x$. Properties of the hadron spectrum are different in different kinematic regions formed by three relevant momentum scales: photon virtuality $Q^2$, hadron transverse momentum $k_T$ and the saturation momentum $Q_s(x)$. We investigate each kinematic region and derive the corresponding asymptotic formulas for the cross section at the leading logarithmic order. We also analyze the next-leading-order (NLO) corrections to the BFKL kernel that are responsible for the momentum conservation. In particular, we establish the asymptotic behavior of the forward elastic dipole--nucleus scattering amplitude at high energies deeply in the saturation regime and a modification of the pomeron intercept. We study the nuclear effect on the inclusive cross section using the nuclear modification factor and its logarithmic derivative. We argue that the later is proportional to the difference between the anomalous dimension of the gluon distribution in nucleus and in proton and thus is a direct measure of the coherence effects. To augment our arguments and present quantitative results we performed numerical calculations in the kinematic region that may be accessible by the future DIS experiments.

J/Psi dissociation in parity-odd bubbles

We calculate the quarkonium dissociation rate in the P and CP-odd domains (bubbles) that were possibly created in heavy-ion collisions. In the presence of the magnetic field produced by the valence quarks of colliding ions, parity-odd domains generate electric field. Quarkonium dissociation is the result of quantum tunneling of quark or antiquark through the potential barrier in this electric field. The strength of the electric field in the quarkonium comoving frame depends on the quarkonium velocity with respect to the background magnetic field. We investigate momentum, electric field strength and azimuthal dependence of the dissociation rate. Azimuthal distribution of quarkonia surviving in the electromagnetic field is strongly anisotropic; the form of anisotropy depends on the relation between the electric and magnetic fields and quarkonium momentum. These features can be used to explore the properties of the electromagnetic field created in heavy ion collisions.

Quarkonium dissociation in quark-gluon plasma via ionization in magnetic field

We study the impact of magnetic fields generated in relativistic heavy ion collisions on the decay probability of quarkonium produced in the central rapidity region. The quark and anti-quark components are subject to mutually orthogonal electric and magnetic fields in the quarkonium comoving frame. In the presence of an electric field, quarkonium has finite dissociation probability. We use the WKB approximation to derive the dissociation probability. We found that quarkonium dissociation energy, i.e. the binding energy at which dissociation probability is of order unity, increases with the magnetic field strength. It also increases with quarkonium momentum in the laboratory frame due to Lorentz boost of electric field in the comoving frame. As a consequence, J/Psi in plasma dissociates at lower temperature then it would be in the absence of a magnetic field. We argue that J/Psi's produced in heavy-ion collisions at LHC with P_T>9GeV would dissociate even in vacuum. In plasma, J/Psi dissociation in magnetic field is much stronger due to decrease of its binding energy with temperature. We discuss the phenomenological implications of our results.

On viscous flow and azimuthal anisotropy of quark-gluon plasma in strong magnetic field

We calculate the viscous pressure tensor of the quark-gluon plasma in strong magnetic field. It is azimuthally anisotropic and is characterized by five shear viscosity coefficients, four of which vanish when the field strength eB is much larger than the plasma temperature squared. We argue, that the azimuthally anisotropic viscous pressure tensor generates the transverse flow with asymmetry as large as 1/3, even not taking into account the collision geometry. We conclude, that the magnitude of the shear viscosity extracted from the experimental data ignoring the magnetic field must be underestimated.

Diffractive hadron production in DIS off heavy nuclei and gluon saturation

We calculate the cross section for diffractive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering off heavy nuclei in the framework of gluon saturation/color glass condensate. We analyze the kinematic region of the future Electron-Ion Collider. We argue that coherent and incoherent diffractive channels are very sensitive to the structure of the nuclear matter at low $x$. This expresses itself in a characteristic dependence of the cross sections on rapidity and transverse momentum of the produced hadron and on the nuclear weight. We also discuss dependence on the scattering angle and argue that both coherent and incoherent cross sections may be within experimental reach at EIC.

Synchrotron radiation by fast fermions in heavy-ion collisions

We study the synchrotron radiation of gluons by fast quarks in strong magnetic field produced by colliding relativistic heavy-ions. We argue that due to high electric conductivity of plasma, time variation of the magnetic field is slow and estimate its relaxation time. We calculate the energy loss due to synchrotron radiation of gluons by fast quarks. We find that the typical energy loss per unit length for a light quark at LHC is a few GeV per fm. This effect alone predicts quenching of jets with $p_\bot$ up to about 20 GeV. We also show that the spin-flip transition effect accompanying the synchrotron radiation leads to a strong polarization of quarks and leptons with respect to the direction of the magnetic field. Observation of the lepton polarization may provide a direct evidence of existence of strong magnetic field in heavy-ion collisions.

Photon decay in strong magnetic field in heavy-ion collisions

We calculate the photon pair production rate in strong magnetic field created in off-central heavy-ion collisions. Photon decay leads to depletion of the photon yield by a few percent at RHIC and by as much as 20% at the LHC. It also generates a substantial azimuthal asymmetry ("elliptic flow") of the final photon distribution. We estimate v_2~2% at RHIC and v_2~14% at LHC. Photon decay measurements is an important tool for studying the magnetic fields in early stages of heavy-ion collisions.
