Breakdown of kT-factorization and J/Psi production in dA collisions

In spite of the sweeping coherence effects in high energy hadron and nuclei collisions, $k_T$-factorization can be recovered for the inclusive gluon production in $pA$ collisions at the leading logarithmic order. In open charm production at RHIC $k_T$-factorization holds numerically with about 10-20% accuracy. This allows to extrapolate the cold nuclear matter effect observed in light and charm meson production in $dA$ collisions to that in $AA$ ones. Unlike the open charm, the breakdown of factorization in $J/ψ$ production is severe. Indeed, already at the lowest order in gluon density the main contribution to the inclusive cross section is proportional to the square of gluon density in the nucleus. As a consequence, one cannot infer the cold nuclear matter effect on $J/ψ$ production in $AA$ collisions from that in $dA$. We present the calculation of $J/ψ$ multiplicity in the framework of the CGC (color glass condensate)/saturation and show that it agrees with the experimental data.

Unveiling the nuclear structure at small x using azimuthal correlations in dA collisions

We discuss azimuthal correlations in double inclusive hadron production in high energy $dA$ collisions at RHIC. We argue that the leading logarithmic approximation is inadequate for description of experimental data. Realistic shape of the azimuthal correlation function is obtain only if we keep terms that are finite in the rapidity difference between the produced hadrons. Likewise, transverse momentum dependence of parton distribution functions in both deuteron and nucleus must be retained. We observe depletion of the back-to-back correlations in central $dAu$ collisions in the forward direction consistent with the Color Glass Condensate predictions.

Nonlinear pair production in scattering of photons on ultra-short laser pulses at high energy

We consider scattering of a photon on a short intense laser pulse at high energy. We argue that for ultra-short laser pulses the interaction is coherent over the entire length of the pulse. At low pulse intensity $I$ the total cross section for electron-positron pair production is proportional to $I$. However, at pulse intensities higher than the characteristic value $I_s$, the total cross section saturates -- it becomes proportional to the logarithm of intensity. This nonlinear effect is due to multi-photon interactions. We derive the total cross section for pair production at high energies by resuming the multi-photon amplitudes to all orders in intensity. We calculate the saturation intensity $I_s$ and show that it is significantly lower than the Schwinger's critical value. We discuss possible experimental tests.

Multi-photon interactions in lepton photo-production on nuclei at high energies

We study multi-photon effects in quantum electrodynamics in lepton photo-production on heavy nuclei and nuclear medium at high energies. We are interested in energy, charge density and nuclear geometry dependence of the cross sections. We use the impact parameter representation that allows us to reduce the problem of photo-production to the problem of propagation of electric dipoles in the nuclear Coulomb field. In the framework of the Glauber model we resum an infinite series of multiphoton amplitudes corresponding to multiple rescattering of the electric dipole on the nucleus. We find that unitarity effects arising due to multi-photon interactions are small and energy-independent for scattering on a single nucleus, whereas in the case of macroscopic nuclear medium they saturate the geometric limit of the total cross section. We discuss an analogy between nuclear medium and intense laser beams.

Gluon saturation effects on J/Psi production in heavy ion collisions

We discuss a novel mechanism for J/Psi$ production in nuclear collisions arising due to the high density of gluons. We demonstrate that gluon saturation in the colliding nuclei is a dominant source of J/Psi suppression and can explain its experimentally observed rapidity and centrality dependence.

Geometry of attosecond laser pulses and photon-photon scattering at high energies

We derive the total cross section for scattering of a photon on an ultra-short laser pulse at high energies. We take into account all multi-photon interactions. We argue that the nonlinear effects due to these interactions become important at very high intensities of the laser pulse. We demonstrate however, that these intensities are significantly lower than the Schwinger critical value.

J/Psi production in heavy ion collisions and gluon saturation

We calculate the inclusive J/Psi production in heavy ion collisions including the effects of gluon saturation in the wave functions of the colliding nuclei. We argue that the dominant production mechanism in proton--nucleus and nucleus--nucleus collisions for heavy nuclei is different from the one in hadron-hadron interactions. We find that the rapidity distribution of primary J/Psi production is more peaked around midrapidity than the analogous distribution in elementary pp collisions. We discuss the consequences of this fact on the experimentally observed J/Psi suppression in Au-Au collisions at RHIC energies.

Coherent and incoherent diffractive hadron production in pA collisions and gluon saturation

We study coherent and incoherent diffractive hadron production in high energy quarkonium--heavy nucleus collisions as a probe of the gluon saturation regime of QCD. Taking this process as a model for pA collisions, we argue that the coherent diffractive gluon production, in which the target nucleus states intact, exhibits a remarkable sensitivity to the energy, rapidity and atomic number dependence. The incoherent diffractive gluon production is less sensitive to the details of the low-x dynamics but can serve as a probe of fluctuations in the color glass condensate. As a quantitative measure of the nuclear effects on diffractive hadron production we introduce a new observable -- the diffractive nuclear modification factor. We discuss possible signatures of gluon saturation in diffractive gluon production at RHIC, LHC and EIC.

Gluon saturation effects on J/Psi production in heavy ion collisions

We consider a novel mechanism for J/Psi production in nuclear collisions arising due to the high density of gluons. We calculate the resulting J/Psi production cross section as a function of rapidity and centrality. We evaluate the nuclear modification factor and show that the rapidity distribution of the produced J/Psi's is significantly more narrow in AA collisions due to the gluon saturation effects. Our results indicate that gluon saturation in the colliding nuclei is a significant source of J/Psi suppression that can be disentangled from the quark-gluon plasma effects.

Broken scale invariance, massless dilaton and confinement in QCD

Classical conformal invariance of QCD in the chiral limit is broken explicitly by scale anomaly. As a result, the lightest scalar particle (scalar glueball, or dilaton) in QCD is not light, and cannot be described as a Goldstone boson. Nevertheless basing on an effective low-energy theory of broken scale invariance we argue that inside the hadrons the non-perturbative interactions of gluon fields result in the emergence of a massless dilaton excitation (which we call the "scalaron"). We demonstrate that our effective theory of broken scale invariance leads to confinement. This theory allows a dual formulation as a classical Yang-Mills theory on a curved conformal space-time background. Possible applications are discussed, including the description of strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma and the spin structure of hadrons.

Probing the low-x structure of nuclear matter with diffractive hadron production in pA collisions

We argue that hadron production in coherent diffraction of proton on a heavy nucleus provides a very sensitive probe of the low-x QCD dynamics. This process probes the BFKL dynamics in proton and the non-linear gluon evolution in nucleus. We calculate the diffractive hadron production cross sections in the RHIC and LHC kinematic regions. To study the nuclear effects we introduce the diffractive nuclear modification factor. We show that unlike the nuclear modification factor for inclusive hadron production that has a very interesting dynamics at RHIC but is expected to be almost completely saturated at the LHC, the nuclear modification factor for diffractive production exhibits a non-trivial behavior both at RHIC and LHC.

Spectrum of diffractively produced gluons in onium-nucleus collisions

We calculate spectrum of diffractively produced gluons in onium-heavy nucleus collisions at high energies. We show that it exhibits a characteristic dependence on nucleus atomic number A and energy/rapidity. We argue that this dependence offers a unique possibility for determining the low-x structure of nuclear matter. Applications to RHIC, LHC and EIC experimental programs are discussed.

Gluon multiplicity in coherent diffraction of onium on a heavy nucleus

We derive the cross section for the diffractive gluon production in high energy onium-nucleus collisions that includes the low-x evolution effects in the rapidity interval between the onium and the produced gluon and in the rapidity interval between the gluon and the target nucleus. We analyze our result in two limiting cases: when the onium size is much smaller than the saturation scale and when its size is much larger than the saturation scale. In the later case the gluon multiplicity is very small in the quasi-classical case and increases when the low-x evolution effects in onium become significant. We discuss the implications of our result for the RHIC, LHC and EIC phenomenology.

Pair production by boost-invariant fields in comoving coordinates

We derive the pair-production probability in a constant electric field in Rindler coordinates in a quasi-classical approximation. Our result is different from the pair-production probability in an inertial frame (Schwinger formula). In particular, it exhibits non-trivial dependence on rapidity and deviation from Gaussian behavior at small transverse momenta. Our results can be important for analysis of particle production in heavy-ion collisions.

Multi-particle Production and Thermalization in High-Energy QCD

We argue that multi-particle production in high energy hadron and nuclear collisions can be considered as proceeding through the production of gluons in the background classical field. In this approach we derive the gluon spectrum immediately after the collision and find that at high energies it is parametrically enhanced by ln(1/x) with respect to the quasi-classical result (x is the Bjorken variable). We show that the produced gluon spectrum becomes thermal (in three dimensions) with an effective temperature determined by the saturation momentum Qs, T= c Qs/2pi during the time ~1/T; we estimate c=sqrt{2pi}/2 ~ 1.2. Although this result by itself does not imply that the gluon spectrum will remain thermal at later times, it has an interesting applications to heavy ion collisions. In particular, we discuss the possibility of Bose-Einstein condensation of the produced gluon pairs and estimate the viscosity of the produced gluon system.

Vacuum self-focussing of very intense laser beams

We argue that long-range photon-photon attraction induced by the dipole interaction of two electron-positron loops can lead to "vacuum self-focussing" of very intense laser beams. The focussing angle theta(F) is found to increase with the beam intensity I as theta(F) I^(4/3); for the laser beams available at present or in the near future, theta(F) 10^(-10)--10^(-7).
