Gluon recombination in high parton density QCD: inclusive pion production

We argue that the collinear factorization of the fragmentation functions in high energy hadron and nuclei collisions breaks down at transverse momenta kT < Qs/g due to high parton densities in the colliding hadrons and/or nuclei. We calculate, at next-to-leading order in projectile parton density and to all orders in target parton density, the double-inclusive cross section for production of a pair of gluons in the scalar J^(PC)=0^(++) channel. Using the low energy theorems of QCD we find the inclusive cross section for pi-meson production.

Production of q bar-q Pairs in Proton-Nucleus Collisions at High Energies

We calculate production of quark-antiquark pairs in high energy proton-nucleus collisions both in the quasi-classical approximation of McLerran-Venugopalan model and including quantum small-$x$ evolution. The resulting production cross section is explicitly expressed in terms of Glauber-Mueller multiple rescatterings in the classical case and in terms of dipole-nucleus scattering amplitude in the quantum evolution case. We generalize the result of one of us (K.T.) beyond the aligned jet configurations. We expand on the earlier results of Blaizot, Gelis and Venugopalan by deriving quark production cross section including quantum evolution corrections in rapidity intervals both between the quarks and the target and between the quarks and the projectile.

Heavy quark production in Color Glass Condensate

We discuss heavy quark production in High Parton Density QCD in quasi-classical approximation and including low-$x$ quantum evolution. We also consider an alternative approach based on the effect of pair production in external fields.

Signatures of the Color Glass Condensate in J/Psi production off nuclear targets

We consider the J/Psi production in proton (deuteron) -- nucleus collisions at high energies. We argue that the production mechanism in this case is different from that in pp collisions due to gluon saturation in the nucleus and formation of the Color Glass Condensate. At forward rapidities (in the proton fragmentation region), the production of J/Psi is increasingly suppressed both as a function of rapidity and centrality. On the other hand, at backward rapidities at RHIC (in the fragmentation region of the nucleus) the coherent effects lead to a modest enhancement of the production cross section, with the nuclear modification factor R(J/Psi) increasing with centrality. We find that the J/Psi production cross section exhibits at forward rapidities the limiting fragmentation scaling established previously for soft processes; in the energy range studied experimentally, it manifests itself as an approximate "xF scaling".

Chaos in the Color Glass Condensate

The number of gluons in the hadron wave function is discrete, and their formation in the chain of small $x$ evolution occurs over discrete rapidity intervals of $Δy \simeq 1/\as$. We therefore consider the evolution as a discrete quantum process. We show that the discrete version of the mean-field Kovchegov evolution equation gives rise to strong fluctuations in the scattering amplitude, not present in the continuous equation. We find that if the linear evolution is as fast as predicted by the perturbative BFKL dynamics, the scattering amplitude at high energies exhibits a chaotic behavior. As a consequence, the properties of diffraction at high energies become universal.

Development of Chaos in the Color Glass Condensate

Noting that the number of gluons in the hadron wave function is discrete, and their formation in the chain of small-x evolution occurs over discrete rapidity intervals of Delta y~1/alpha_s, we formulate the discrete version of the Balitsky--Kovchegov evolution equation and show that its solution behaves chaotically in the phenomenologically interesting kinematic region.

Open and hidden charm production in pA collisions

We discuss production of charmed mesons and J/Psi in p(d)A collisions at high energies. We argue that when the saturation scale Qs characterizing the parton density in a nucleus exceeds the quark mass m, the naive perturbation theory breaks down. Consequently, we calculate a process of heavy quark production in both open and hidden channels in the framework of the parton saturation model (Color Glass Condensate). We demonstrate that at RHIC such description is in agreement with experimental data on charm production.

From Color Glass Condensate to Quark Gluon Plasma through the event horizon

We propose a new thermalization scenario for heavy ion collisions which at sufficiently high energies implies the phase transition to the quark--gluon plasma. The key ingredient of our approach is the Hawking--Unruh effect: an observer moving with an acceleration $a$ experiences the influence of a thermal bath with an effective temperature $T = a / 2π$, similar to the one present in the vicinity of a black hole horizon. For electric charges moving in external electromagnetic fields of realistic strength, the resulting temperature appears too small to be detected. However for partons in strong color fields the effect should be observable: in the Color Glass Condensate picture, the strength of the color-electric field is $E \sim Q_s^2/g$ ($Q_s$ is the saturation scale, and $g$ is the strong coupling), the typical acceleration is $a \sim Q_s$, and the heat bath temperature is $T = Q_s / 2π\sim 200$ MeV. In nuclear collisions at sufficiently high energies the effect can induce a rapid thermalization over the time period of $τ\simeq 2π/Q_s \simeq 1\ {\rm fm}$ accompanied by phase transitions. We consider a specific example of chiral symmetry restoration induced by a rapid deceleration of the colliding nuclei. We argue that parton saturation in the initial nuclear wave functions is a necessary pre--condition for the formation of quark--gluon plasma. We discuss the implications of our "black hole thermalization" scenario for various observables in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Nuclear Modification Factor in d+Au Collisions: Onset of Suppression in the Color Glass Condensate

We perform a quantitative analysis of the nuclear modification factor in deuteron--gold collisions R(dAu) within the Color Glass Condensate approach, and compare our results with the recent data from RHIC experiments. Our model leads to Cronin enhancement at mid-rapidity, while at forward rapidities it predicts strong suppression of R(dAu) at all pT due to low-x evolution. We demonstrate that our results are consistent with the data for dAu charged hadron spectra, R(dAu) and R(CP) recently reported for rapidities in the interval eta=0--3.2 by the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC. We also make a prediction for R(pA) at mid-rapidity in pA collisions at the LHC.

Heavy quark production by a quasi-classical color field in proton-nucleus collisions

We calculate the inclusive heavy quark production cross section for proton-nucleus collisions at high energies. We perform calculation in a quasi-classical approximation (McLerran-Venugopalan model) neglecting all low-x evolution effects. The derived expression for the differential cross section can be applied for studying the heavy quark production in the central rapidity region at RHIC.

Heavy quark production from Color Glass Condensate at RHIC

I consider production of heavy quarks in pA and AA collisions in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate. I discuss the heavy quark production in pA collisions in a classical approximation which takes into account all multiple rescatterings of a proton in a nucleus. For peripheral collisions, heavy quark production cross section can be written in $k_T$-factorized form. The $k_T$ factorization is used to construct a simple model which takes into account both classical and quantum effects in pA and AA collisions. I review the main result of calculation based on that model: open charm in the central rapidity region at RHIC gets suppressed as a function of rapidity. Although the numbers obtained for the suppression factor are model dependent, the very fact of suppression is the general feature of the Color Glass Condensate at RHIC kinematical region. It indicates the onset of quantum evolution effects in a nucleus and is universal for all inclusive processes.

Cronin Effect and High-p_T Suppression in pA Collisions

We review the predictions of the theory of Color Glass Condensate for gluon production cross section in p(d)A collisions. We demonstrate that at moderate energies, when the gluon production cross section can be calculated in the framework of McLerran-Venugopalan model, it has only partonic level Cronin effect in it. At higher energies/rapidities corresponding to smaller values of Bjorken x quantum evolution becomes important. The effect of quantum evolution at higher energies/rapidities is to introduce suppression of high-p_T gluons slightly decreasing the Cronin enhancement. At still higher energies/rapidities quantum evolution leads to suppression of produced gluons at all values of p_T.

Particle Correlations at High Partonic Density

We discuss manifestations of the particle correlations at high partonic density in the heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. In particular, we argue that the elliptic flow variable v2 is dominated by particle correlations at high pT.

Inclusive Gluon Production in DIS at High Parton Density

We calculate the cross section of a single inclusive gluon production in deep inelastic scattering at very high energies in the saturation regime, where the parton densities inside hadrons and nuclei are large and the evolution of structure functions with energy is nonlinear. The expression we obtain for the inclusive gluon production cross section is generated by this nonlinear evolution. We analyze the rapidity distribution of the produced gluons as well as their transverse momentum spectrum given by the derived expression for the inclusive cross section. We propose an ansatz for the multiplicity distribution of gluons produced in nuclear collisions which includes the effects of nonlinear evolution in both colliding nuclei.

On Black Hole Horizon Fluctuations

A study of the high angular momentum particles 'atmosphere' near the Schwarzschild black hole horizon suggested that strong gravitational interactions occur at invariant distance of the order of $\sqrt[3]{M}$ (A. Casher et. al). We present a generalization of this result to the Kerr-Newman black hole case. It is shown that the larger charge and angular momentum black hole bears, the larger invariant distance at which strong gravitational interactions occur becomes. This invariant distance is of order $\sqrt[3]{r_+^2/\hh}.$ This implies, that the Planckian structure of the Hawking radiation of extreme black holes is completely broken.
