Intersections of Hypersurfaces and Ring of Conditions of a Spherical Homogeneous Space

We prove a version of the BKK theorem for the ring of conditions of a spherical homogeneous space $G/H$. We also introduce the notion of ring of complete intersections, firstly for a spherical homogeneous space and secondly for an arbitrary variety. Similarly to the ring of conditions of the torus, the ring of complete intersections of $G/H$ admits a description in terms of volumes of polytopes.

On degenerations of projective varieties to complexity-one T-varieties

Let $R$ be a positively graded finitely generated $\textbf{k}$-domain with Krull dimension $d+1$. We show that there is a homogeneous valuation $\mathfrak{v}: R \setminus \{0\} \to \mathbb{Z}^d$ of rank $d$ such that the associated graded $\text{gr}_\mathfrak{v}(R)$ is finitely generated. This then implies that any polarized $d$-dimensional projective variety $X$ has a flat deformation over $\mathbb{A}^1$, with reduced and irreducible fibers, to a polarized projective complexity-one $T$-variety (i.e. a variety with a faithful action of a $(d-1)$-dimensional torus $T$). As an application we conclude that any $d$-dimensional complex smooth projective variety $X$ equipped with an integral Kähler form has a proper $(d-1)$-dimensional Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense subset that extends continuously to all of $X$.

Khovanskii bases, higher rank valuations and tropical geometry

Given a finitely generated algebra $A$, it is a fundamental question whether $A$ has a full rank discrete (Krull) valuation $\mathfrak{v}$ with finitely generated value semigroup. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for this, in terms of tropical geometry of $A$. In the course of this we introduce the notion of a Khovanskii basis for $(A, \mathfrak{v})$ which provides a framework for far extending Gröbner theory on polynomial algebras to general finitely generated algebras. In particular, this makes a direct connection between the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies and tropical geometry, and toric degenerations arising in both contexts. We also construct an associated compactification of $Spec(A)$. Our approach includes many familiar examples such as the Gel'fand-Zetlin degenerations of coordinate rings of flag varieties as well as wonderful compactifications of reductive groups. We expect that many examples coming from cluster algebras naturally fit into our framework.

A short survey on Newton polytopes, tropical geometry and ring of conditions of algebraic torus

The purpose of this note is to give an exposition of some interesting combinatorics and convex geometry concepts that appear in algebraic geometry in relation to counting the number of solutions of a system of polynomial equations in several variables over complex numbers. The exposition is aimed for a general audience in mathematics and we hope to be accessible to undergraduate as well as advance high school students. The topics discussed belong to relatively new, and closely related branches of algebraic geometry which are usually referred to as tropical geometry and toric geometry. These areas make connections between the study of algebra and geometry of polynomials and the combinatorial and convex geometric study of piecewise linear functions. The main results discussed in this note are descriptions of the so-called "ring of conditions" of algebraic torus.

Convergence of polarizations, toric degenerations, and Newton-Okounkov bodies

Let $X$ be a smooth irreducible complex algebraic variety of dimension $n$ and $L$ a very ample line bundle on $X$. Given a toric degeneration of $(X,L)$ satisfying some natural technical hypotheses, we construct a deformation $\{J_s\}$ of the complex structure on $X$ and bases $\mathcal{B}_s$ of $H^0(X,L, J_s)$ so that $J_0$ is the standard complex structure and, in the limit as $s \to \infty$, the basis elements approach dirac-delta distributions centered at Bohr-Sommerfeld fibers of a moment map associated to $X$ and its toric degeneration. The theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies and its associated toric degenerations shows that the technical hypotheses mentioned above hold in some generality. Our results significantly generalize previous results in geometric quantization which prove "independence of polarization" between Kähler quantizations and real polarizations. As an example, in the case of general flag varieties $X=G/B$ and for certain choices of $λ$, our result geometrically constructs a continuous degeneration of the (dual) canonical basis of $V_λ^*$ to a collection of dirac delta functions supported at the Bohr-Sommerfeld fibres corresponding exactly to the lattice points of a Littelmann-Berenstein-Zelevinsky string polytope $Δ_{\underline{w}_0}(λ) \cap \mathbb{Z}^{\dim(G/B)}$.

On a notion of anticanonical class for families of convex polytopes

The purpose of this note is to give a generalization of the statement that the anticanonical class of a (smooth) projective toric variety is the sum of invariant prime divisors, corresponding to the rays in its fan (or facets in its polytope), to some other classes of varieties with algebraic group actions. To this end, we suggest an analogue of the notion of anticanonical class (of a compact complex manifold) for linear families of convex polytopes. This is inspired by the Serre duality for smooth projective varieties as well as the Ehrhart-Macdonald reciprocity for rational polytopes. The main examples we have in mind are: (1) The family of polytopes normal to a given fan (which corresponds to the case of toric varieties). (2) The family of Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes (which corresponds to the case of the flag variety). (3) The family of Newton-Okounkov polytopes for a (smooth) group compactification.

Gröbner theory and tropical geometry on spherical varieties

Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group. We develop a Gröbner theory for multiplicity-free $G$-algebras, as well as a tropical geometry for subschemes in a spherical homogeneous space $G/H$. We define the notion of a spherical tropical variety and prove a fundamental theorem of tropical geometry in this context. We also propose a definition for a spherical amoeba in $G/H$. Our work partly builds on the previous work of Vogiannou on spherical tropicalization and in some ways is complementary.

Springer's Weyl group representation via localization

Let $G$ denote a reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$ and $x$ a nilpotent element of its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The Springer variety $\mathcal{B}_x$ is the closed subvariety of the flag variety $\mathcal{B}$ of $G$ parameterizing the Borel subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}$ containing $x$. It has the remarkable property that the Weyl group $W$ of $G$ admits a representation on the cohomology of $\mathcal{B}_x$ even though $W$ rarely acts on $\mathcal{B}_x$ itself. Well-known constructions of this action due to Springer et al use technical machinery from algebraic geometry. The purpose of this note is to describe an elementary approach that gives this action when $x$ is what we call parabolic-surjective. The idea is to use localization to construct an action of $W$ on the equivariant cohomology algebra $H_S^*(\mathcal{B}_x)$, where $S$ is a certain algebraic subtorus of $G$. This action descends to $H^*(\mathcal{B}_x)$ via the forgetful map and gives the desired representation. The parabolic-surjective case includes all nilpotents of type $A$ and, more generally, all nilpotents for which it is known that $W$ acts on $H_S^*(\mathcal{B}_x)$ for some torus $S$. Our result is deduced from a general theorem describing when a group action on the cohomology of the fixed point set of a torus action on a space lifts to the full cohomology algebra of the space.

Toric degenerations and symplectic geometry of smooth projective varieties

Let $X$ be an $n$-dimensional smooth complex projective variety embedded in $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{N}$. We construct a smooth family $\mathcal{X}$ over $\mathbb{C}$ with an embedding in $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{N} \times \mathbb{C}$ whose generic fiber is $X$ and the special fiber is the torus $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ sitting in $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{N}$ via a monomial embedding. We use this to show that if $ω$ is an integral Kähler form on $X$ then for any $ε> 0$ there is an open subset $U_ε\subset X$ such that $vol(X \setminus U_ε) < ε$ and $U_ε$ is symplectomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ equipped with a (rational) toric Kähler form. As an application we obtain lower bounds for the Gromov width of $(X, ω)$ in terms of its associated Newton-Okounkov bodies. We also show that if $ω$ lies in the class $c_1(L)$ of a very ample line bundle $L$ then $(X, ω)$ has a full symplectic packing with $d$ equal balls where $d$ is the degree of $(X, L)$.

A remark on asymptotic enumeration of highest weights in tensor powers of a representation

We consider the semigroup S of highest weights appearing in tensor powers V^k of a finite dimensional representation V of a connected reductive group. We describe the cone generated by S as the cone over the weight polytope of V intersected with the positive Weyl chamber. From this we get a description for the asymptotic of the number of highest weights appearing in V^k in terms of the volume of this polytope.

Crystal bases and Newton-Okounkov bodies

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group. We prove that the string parametrization of a crystal basis for a finite dimensional irreducible representation of G extends to a natural valuation on the field of rational functions on the flag variety G/B, which is a highest term valuation corresponding to a coordinate system on a Bott-Samelson variety. This shows that the string polytopes associated to irreducible representations, can be realized as Newton-Okounkov bodies for the flag variety. This is closely related to an earlier result of A. Okounkov for the Gelfand-Cetlin polytopes of the symplectic group. As a corollary we recover a multiplicativity property of the canonical basis due to P. Caldero. We generalize the results to spherical varieties. From these the existence of SAGBI bases for the homogeneous coordinate rings of flag and spherical varieties, as well as their toric degenerations follow, recovering previous results of Caldero, Alexeev-Brion and the author.

Complete intersections in spherical varieties

Let G be a complex reductive algebraic group. We study complete intersections in a spherical homogeneous space G/H defined by a generic collection of sections from G-invariant linear systems. Whenever nonempty, all such complete intersections are smooth varieties. We compute their arithmetic genus as well as some of their h^{p,0} numbers. The answers are given in terms of the moment polytopes and Newton-Okounkov polytopes associated to G-invariant linear systems. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition on a collection of linear systems so that the corresponding generic complete intersection is nonempty. This criterion applies to arbitrary quasi-projective varieties (i.e. not necessarily spherical homogeneous spaces). When the spherical homogeneous space under consideration is a complex torus (C^*)^n, our results specialize to well-known results from the Newton polyhedra theory and toric varieties.

On mixed multiplicities of ideals

Let R be the local ring of a point on a variety X over an algebraically closed field k. We make a connection between the notion of mixed (Samuel) multiplicity of m-primary ideals in R and intersection theory of subspaces of rational functions on X which deals with the number of solutions of systems of equations. From this we readily deduce several properties of mixed multiplicities. In particular, we prove a (reverse) Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for mixed multiplicities due to Teissier and Rees-Sharp. As an application in convex geometry we obtain a proof of a (reverse) Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for covolumes of convex bodies inscribed in a convex cone.

Integrable systems, toric degenerations and Okounkov bodies

Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension n equipped with a very ample Hermitian line bundle L. In the first part of the paper, we show that if there exists a toric degeneration of X satisfying some natural hypotheses (which are satisfied in many settings), then there exists a completely integrable system on X in the sense of symplectic geometry. More precisely, we construct a collection of real-valued functions H_1, ... H_n on X which are continuous on all of X, smooth on an open dense subset U of X, and pairwise Poisson-commute on U. Moreover, we show that in many cases, we can construct the integrable system so that the functions H_1, ..., H_n generate a Hamiltonian torus action on U. In the second part, we show that the toric degenerations arising in the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies satisfy all the hypotheses of the first part of the paper. In this case the image of the "moment map" μ= (H_1, ..., H_n): X to R^n is precisely the Okounkov body Δ= Δ(R, v) associated to the homogeneous coordinate ring R of X, and an appropriate choice of a valuation v on R. Our main technical tools come from algebraic geometry, differential (Kaehler) geometry, and analysis. Specifically, we use the gradient-Hamiltonian vector field, and a subtle generalization of the famous Lojasiewicz gradient inequality for real-valued analytic functions. Since our construction is valid for a large class of projective varieties X, this manuscript provides a rich source of new examples of integrable systems. We discuss concrete examples, including elliptic curves, flag varieties of arbitrary connected complex reductive groups, spherical varieties, and weight varieties.

Convex bodies and multiplicities of ideals

We associate convex regions in R^n to m-primary graded sequences of subspaces, in particular m-primary graded sequences of ideals, in a large class of local algebras (including analytically irreducible local domains). These convex regions encode information about Samuel multiplicities. This is in the spirit of the theory of Grobner bases and Newton polyhedra on one hand, and the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies for linear systems on the other hand. We use this to give a new proof, as well as a generalization of a Brunn-Minkowski inequality for multiplicities due to Teissier and Rees-Sharp.

Note on the Grothendieck group of subspaces of rational functions and Shokurov's b-divisors

In a previous paper the authors develop an intersection theory for subspaces of rational functions on an algebraic variety X over complex numbers. In this note, we first extend this intersection theory to an arbitrary algebraically closed ground field. Secondly we give an isomorphism between the group of b-divisors on the birational class of X and the Grothendieck group of the semigroup of subspaces of rational functions on X. The constructed isomorphism moreover preserves the intersection numbers. This provides an alternative approach to b-divisors and their intersection theory.

Note on cohomology rings of spherical varieties and volume polynomial

Let G be a complex reductive group and X a projective spherical G-variety. Moreover, assume that the subalgebra A of the cohomology ring H^*(X, R) generated by the Chern classes of line bundles has Poincare duality. We give a description of the subalgebra A in terms of the volume of polytopes. This generalizes the Khovanskii-Pukhlikov description of the cohomology ring of a smooth toric variety. In particular, we obtain a unified description for the cohomology rings of complete flag varieties and smooth toric varieties. As another example we get a description of the cohomology ring of the variety of complete conics. We also address the question of additivity of the moment and string polytopes and prove the additivity of the moment polytope for complete symmetric varieties.
