Newton-Okounkov bodies, semigroups of integral points, graded algebras and intersection theory

Generalizing the notion of Newton polytope, we define the Newton-Okounkov body, respectively, for semigroups of integral points, graded algebras, and linear series on varieties. We prove that any semigroup in the lattice Z^n is asymptotically approximated by the semigroup of all the points in a sublattice and lying in a convex cone. Applying this we obtain several results: we show that for a large class of graded algebras, the Hilbert functions have polynomial growth and their growth coefficients satisfy a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. We prove analogues of Fujita approximation theorem for semigroups of integral points and graded algebras, which imply a generalization of this theorem for arbitrary linear series. Applications to intersection theory include a far-reaching generalization of the Kushnirenko theorem (from Newton polytope theory) and a new version of the Hodge inequality. We also give elementary proofs of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality in convex geometry and its analogue in algebraic geometry.

Convex bodies associated to actions of reductive groups

We associate convex bodies to a wide class of graded G-algebras where G is a connected reductive group. These convex bodies give information about the Hilbert function as well as multiplicities of irreducible representations appearing in the graded algebra. We extend the notion of Duistermaat-Heckman measure to graded G-algebras and prove a Fujita type approximation theorem and a Brunn-Minkowski inequality for this measure. This in particular applies to arbitrary G-line bundles giving an equivariant version of the theory of volumes of line bundles. We generalize the Brion-Kazarnowski formula for the degree of a spherical variety to arbitrary G-varieties. Our approach follows some of the previous works of A. Okounkov. We use the asymptotic theory of semigroups of integral points and Newton-Okounkov bodies developed in our ealier work arXiv:0904.3350

Newton polytopes for horospherical spaces

A subgroup H of a reductive group G is horospherical if it contains a maximal unipotent subgroup. We describe the Grothendieck semigroup of invariant subspaces of regular functions on G/H as a semigroup of convex polytopes. From this we obtain a formula for the number of solutions of a generic system of equations on G/H in terms of mixed volume of polytopes. This generalizes Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem from toric geometry.

Moment polytopes, semigroup of representations and Kazarnovskii's theorem

Two representations of a reductive group G are spectrally equivalent if the same irreducible representations appear in both of them. The semigroup of finite dimensional representations of G with tensor product and up to spectral equivalence is a rather complicated object. We show that the Grothendieck group of this semigroup is more tractable and give a description of it in terms of moment polytopes of representations. As a corollary, we give a proof of the Kazarnovskii theorem on the number of solutions in G of a system f_1(x) = ... = f_m(x) = 0, where m=dim(G) and each f_i is a generic function in the space of matrix elements of a representation pi_i of G.

Mixed volume and an extension of intersection theory of divisors

Let K(X) be the collection of all non-zero finite dimensional subspaces of rational functions on an n-dimensional irreducible variety X. For any n-tuple L_1,..., L_n in K(X), we define an intersection index [L_1,..., L_n] as the number of solutions in X of a system of equations f_1 = ... = f_n = 0 where each f_i is a generic function from the space L_i. In counting the solutions, we neglect the solutions x at which all the functions in some space L_i vanish as well as the solutions at which at least one function from some subspace L_i has a pole. The collection K(X) is a commutative semigroup with respect to a natural multiplication. The intersection index [L_1,..., L_n] can be extended to the Grothendieck group of K(X). This gives an extension of the intersection theory of divisors. The extended theory is applicable even to non-complete varieties. We show that this intersection index enjoys all the main properties of the mixed volume of convex bodies. Our paper is inspired by the Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem from the Newton polytope theory.

Algebraic equations and convex bodies

The well-known Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem from the theory of Newton polyhedra relates algebraic geometry and the theory of mixed volumes. Recently the authors have found a far-reaching generalization of this theorem to generic systems of algebraic equations on any quasi-projective variety. In the present note we review these results and their applications to algebraic geometry and convex geometry.

On the equivariant cohomology of subvarieties of a B-regular variety

By a $B$-regular variety, we mean a smooth projective variety over $C$ admitting an algebraic action of the upper triangular Borel subgroup $B \subset SL_2(C)$ such that the unipotent radical in $B$ has a unique fixed point. A result of M. Brion and the first author describes the equivariant cohomology algebra (over $C$) of a $B$-regular variety $X$ as the coordinate ring of a remarkable affine curve in $X \times P^1$. The main result of this paper uses this fact to classify the $B$-invariant subvarieties $Y$ of a $B$-regular variety $X$ for which the restriction map $i_Y:H^*(X) \to H^*(Y)$ is surjective.

Convex bodies and algebraic equations on affine varieties

Given an affine variety X and a finite dimensional vector space of regular functions L on X, we associate a convex body to (X, L) such that its volume is responsible for the number of solutions of a generic system of functions from L. This is a far reaching generalization of usual theory of Newton polytopes (which is concerned with toric varieties). As applications we give new, simple and transparent proofs of some well-known theorems in both algebraic geometry (e.g. Hodge Index Theorem) and convex geometry (e.g. Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality). Our main tools are classical Hilbert theory on degree of subvarieties of a projective space (in algebraic geometry) and Brunn-Minkowski inequality (in convex geometric).

Vector fields, torus actions and equivariant cohomology

An old result of the first author and David Lieberman says that if a compact Kaehler manifold X admits a holomorphic vector field V having at least one zero, then the Dolbeault cohomology algebra H^*(X, Ω^*) of X is isomorphic with the bigraded algebra associated to a certain filtered graded ring. If V has isolated zeros this is the graded algebra associated to a certain filtration of the coordinate ring of the scheme Z defined by zero(V). The purpose of this note is to show that if V is generated by a torus action then equivariant Dolbeault cohomology can be used to give direct geometric proofs of the above result. What is particularly interesting is the picture obtained when zero(V) has positive dimension.

SAGBI bases and Degeneration of Spherical Varieties to Toric Varieties

Let X \subset Proj(V) be a projective spherical G-variety, where V is a finite dimensional G-module and G = SP(2n, C). In this paper, we show that X can be deformed, by a flat deformation, to the toric variety corresponding to a convex polytope Δ(X). The polytope Δ(X) is the polytope fibred over the moment polytope of X with the Gelfand-Cetlin polytopes as fibres. We prove this by showing that if X is a horospherical variety, e.g. flag varieties and Grassmanians, the homogeneous coordinate ring of X can be embedded in a Laurent polynomial algebra and has a SAGBI basis with respect to a natural term order. Moreover, we show that the semi-group of initial terms, after a linear change of variables, is the semi-group of integral points in the cone over the polytope Δ(X). The results of this paper are true for other classical groups, provided that a result of A. Okounkov on the representation theory of SP(2n,C) is shown to hold for other classical groups.

Fixed Points of Torus Action and Cohomology Ring of Toric Varieties

Let X be a smooth simplicial toric variety. Let Z be the set of T-fixed points of X. We construct a filtration for A(Z), the ring of complex-valued functions on Z, such that Gr A(Z) is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of X. This is the explanation of the general results of Carrell and Liebermann on the cohomology of T-varities, in the case of toric varieties. We give an explicit isomorphism between Gr A(Z) and Brion's description of the polytope algebra.

Morse theory and Euler characteristic of sections of spherical varieties

A theorem due to D. Bernstein states that Euler characteristic of a hypersurface defined by a polynomial f in (C\{0})^n is equal (upto a sign) to n! times volume of the Newton polyhedron of f. This result is related to algebaric torus actions and toric varieties. In this thesis, I prove that one can generalize the above result to actions of reductive groups with spherical orbits. That is, if a reductive group acts linearly on a vector space such that generic orbits are spherical, one can compute the Euler characteristic of generic hyperplane sections of a generic orbit in terms of combinatorial data. Our main tool is Morse theory. We begin with developing a variant of classical Morse theory for algebraic submanifolds of R^n and linear functionals. This will become related to stratification theory of Thom and Whitney as well as Palais-Smale generalized Morse theory.
